Vote for the IRPA Try of the Year 2010
In December of 2009 a shortlist of 15 tries were drawn up by the IRB and the International Rugby Players Association with a vote going to the public for the first time. Last month it was repeated, but this time there’s 18 tries to choose from.
The vote has been public since December and while this is the first you’re seeing of it on RD, it’s not too late as the competition close on the 17th of this month, which is this coming Monday.
In 2009 Jaque Fourie won the IRPA Try of the Year award for his great try in the corner in the second test between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. There were over 10 000 votes by email, but hopefully this year more will take part.
It’s a truly global competition too, with tries included from the Six Nations, Tri Nations, Pacific Nations Cup, IRB Nations Cup, June and November tests, and even the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
For the second year running Shane Williams has two tries featured, while New Zealand’s teams have the most tries listed with five, while Australia, England, and Wales are all represented three times. The list was narrowed down from 230 tries to get the final 18.
1: Shane Williams | 2: Ben Foden | 3: Shane Williams | 4: Dan Carter | 5: Felipe Contepomi
| 6: Gonzalo Tiesi, | 7: Mils Muliaina | 8: Israel Dagg | 9: James O’Connor |10: Danielle Waterman | 11: Cobie-Jane Morgan | 12: Huriana Manuel | 13: Chrysander Botha | 14: Nikola Matawalu | 15: Juan Jose Imhoff |16: Chris Ashton | 17: James Hook |18: Adam Ashley-Cooper
The videos below are displayed as a playlist. Skip through and around by using the menu, or just sit back and watch them all. If there's any issues, you can mouse over and select. To enter, send an email to votetry@irb.com with your choice's number in the subject line.

I f*cking LOVE Shane Williams, not that I'm biased or anything.
By WALES 'TIL I DIE, at January 13, 2011 3:38 pm
I made a playlist so they will play on the right order automatically.

Dadino, these are in the right order already.
I wonder who will get it this time? Williams or Ashton I'd think.

Little shane vs France for me, good team try
By David, at January 13, 2011 3:49 pm
Seriously, how has Gear's first try for the Maori against England in June not made it in there!?
By PineTree, at January 13, 2011 3:52 pm
As much as it pains me to say this, I think Williams' try versus Scotland should win.
It would have been better if his shorts fell down though and someone slipped him a length.
By Barry Garlow, at January 13, 2011 3:55 pm
Mils Muliaina try was great with the kick from Corey Jane
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 4:11 pm
Israel Daggs try was insane. Try out of nothing. Found the smallest of gaps between Spies and Burger and the only person to touch him was McCaw once he crossed the whitewash. Gets my vote everytime.
By Dozzy_X, at January 13, 2011 4:25 pm
France was a good sparing partner in 2010.
French Flair is now something we are giving to our opponent during games!
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 4:33 pm
Jacque fourie's for the Stormers should be there....
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 4:38 pm
^ it would, but these are international tries :)
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 4:47 pm
Is there a reason why none of the tries shown are of SA? Did SA have that bad of a year?
By Adam'nJess, at January 13, 2011 4:59 pm
surprised that there aren't any tries from france-australia, because the aussies had some good back play going, same for the all blacks' november tests
By Luxi, at January 13, 2011 5:21 pm
carter against wales in june
he just plays the game with such ease, class, intelligence and skill
brilliant player
By Luxi, at January 13, 2011 5:23 pm
Shane Williams deserves it from the tries I've seen. If Kurtley Beale had scored without a ruck forming, he'd have my vote. His was the most spectacular run.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 5:23 pm
Shane williams against scotland, what a finish to an epic game.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 5:32 pm
I did like the Ashton one v Australia, and I don't see how scoring against a team with 13 players can really get try of the year!
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 5:35 pm
Nine monthes and it's the RWC:
what's your International XV team?
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 5:43 pm
Chris Ashton's try was dreamy!
By cigarr0, at January 13, 2011 5:47 pm
Tough one. I liked Ashley Coopers against NZ. Also Chris Ashtons.
I was going to say the first Wales try by Williams vs France was the stand out try but some of the French players stop as they think the whistle has gone or somthing and it makes it a little easier for him. But the build up was amazing.
By Andy, at January 13, 2011 6:05 pm
Ashton for me. Let's just call it a coincidence that I'm an England fan from Northampton
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 6:06 pm
Great to have included some women rugby. You should show more of it...
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 6:16 pm
Got to be honest, of all the tries here the most spectacular was Israel Dagg's. Unreal how he beat so many so easily!
Its just a pity such an amazing try was scored by a Kiwi.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 6:22 pm
Real class from Contepomi for Argentina, but I'm a fan of Dagg's ghost try and the Ashton 80m sprint.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 7:07 pm
Ashton's, Carter's or Muliaina's.
Not William's for the same reasons as Andy's: it's easier to score when everybody stops playing. Mark my words: I didn't say it was easy. Just easier. And France proved a lot that you could score tries when they're playing.
Ashton's got something the others miss: a beaming smile on his face showing he knew he'd score while he "simply" had to run more than 60 meters and burn Mitchell, Connor and Cooper.
My vote runs to Ashton. Smiling.
By Maximus, at January 13, 2011 7:10 pm
Ashton ^^ although maybe alittle bias...
By Enough, at January 13, 2011 7:35 pm
shane williams v scotland is of course the best. Magic!
By dezzy, at January 13, 2011 8:12 pm
Did Ireland not play this year? on the bright side they didnt allow any either.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 8:16 pm
Shane v Scotland in my opinion, great team try, dramatic ending.

This is my pick:
1) 18
2) 16
3) 1

Williams' looks almost the same as his entry for last year's Try of the Year. That's not a jab, but rather an affirmation that he's still a great player and on any good day can glide through a half-dozen defenders.
By fry, at January 13, 2011 9:59 pm
dude,
thisnt any french tries
fuck me!
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 10:20 pm
its just lucky the maori dont count as a international team. Gears try against england would be a shoe in. Hell they scored 5 or 6 this year that were worthy of this list.
By Anonymous, at January 13, 2011 10:26 pm
The fact that there aren't any French try gives you an idea of the rubbish year we've had...
By Gman, at January 13, 2011 11:42 pm
Where is the BOD try against NZ? That pickup at full speed was unreal!
By Megan, at January 14, 2011 1:36 am
Shanes William against France is a nice one. Shane william against scotland is dramatic but certainly not as nice as the France one. Why?
Beacause there was no defence. 15 against 13 wasn't a good match up. Dagg is the best! he runs a very good line.
By Cockbreath, at January 14, 2011 1:40 am
I just can't believe there aren't any scottish tries! This is a big sham! This is not a fair vote! Oh... yes... I forgot... we don't score any...
By alasdair, at January 14, 2011 1:42 am
That Ashton one is the most over-rated try I can remember. All the talk of one of the great Twickenham tries seems crazy to me.Youngs' decision to run it was sensational, but there are maybe 3 basic passes and then he outpaces some exhausted cover defenders.
There are several tries there with multiple phases, the whole team involved and a variety of different skills (running, passing, kicking, rucking etc). E.g. the Williams one against Scotland.
Pity Beale dropped the ball as he grounded it against Wales, there wouldn't be much debate here if that had been a try.
By Anonymous, at January 14, 2011 2:54 am
Everyone’s going to be biased, but we can all appreciate good rugby when we see it :-)
Mil’s try was my vote as it ticked all the boxes:
- The try involved the team (the Carter/Dagg/Ashely-Cooper tries were awesome midfield busts – but really an individual effort.)
- The try was started out from a long way out (not necessary, but adds to the degree of difficulty)
- There was *one* play where you thought, ‘holy crap, that was ridiculous!’, which in this case was Cory Jane’s perfect chip infield while running down the touch while fending & holding off Rocky Elsom. That was an amazing showing of skill, strength and vision.
I don’t think we’ll be seeing a try like that again any time soon. The others were awesome too, but how many times do you see guy get the ball on the outside and gas someone? Quite a bit.
The O’Connor try from the Beal run would’ve been number one if two rucks hadn’t been formed afterwards (it just loses some of the magic).
By wassup, at January 14, 2011 3:08 am
"Dagg...Dagg.. beautiful run, Israel Dagg, still GOING!! ISRAEL DAGG!!!"
Someone got a little excited by the best try of the year (IMO)
By wow-jiffy-lube, at January 14, 2011 3:17 am
either shane against france or chris ashton should amazing speed endurance to outpase evryone
By Castle, at January 14, 2011 5:13 am
WHAT ABOUT O'CONNOR VS. THE ALL BLACKS IN HONGKONG TO WIN THE GAME!?!? orrr has that try been nominated for best of the decade instead?
By Ryan, at January 14, 2011 7:05 am
Im pretty sure that the Shane Williams try vs France is illegal.. If a player knocks on (Dusautoir) and the ball touches another player of the same team (Malzieu) then play stops..
By GF, at January 14, 2011 9:41 am
Always tough to discuss/choose. All good tries anyhow.
From an individual perspective, try 16 from Ashton and 9 James O Connor, are really impressive. The change of pace/direction of Ashton is impressive.
From as team perspective, both Shane Williams try are fantastic, (1 and 3). As already, mentioned just a pity that at the end of the first one some French seem to stop playing for a while, other wise this would have been my number one with no hesitation.
Also, N#2 Ben Foden is a great build up try with quick end passing ball.
So my pick:
Winner : 3) Shane
Runner up : 1) Shane
Hope Marc Lievremont is watching.....he can learn something
By Flipje, at January 14, 2011 9:53 am
@GF,
Correct but I think the referee let the advantage to the Welsh. Pity the French decided to stop...for a short while.
By Flipje, at January 14, 2011 9:56 am
Adam Ashley-Cooper.
To score a try like that against the best team in the world...
The fact it wasn't a team try makes it even more amazing, he just took the ball and said sayonara.
By jorge, at January 14, 2011 10:21 am
Hav to agree with a previous anonymous post: Ashton's try is seriously overrated. Had so much space and the defenders were static. Good try but by no means amazing. Just because it was against Australia in Twickenham it's suddenly seen as 'one of the great tries'. Plenty of better ones throughout the year. Adam Ashley Cooper's reminds me of BOD for Lions in 2001 vs. Australia. A good team try should win it
By MCB, at January 14, 2011 1:44 pm
Not Shane Williams', nore Ashton's, that is for sure. Don't understand why everyone is overrating those average tries.
Israel Dagg's is simply amazing, i'd vote for it, and Carter against Wales too, he's just brilliant. And i'm not a kiwi.
By rodofle, at January 14, 2011 2:05 pm
Can't believe nobody has suggested Foden's try against France - the build up, the straight running from the big men, patience to not throw it wide until it is on and the defence had been sucked in then the timing of Foden's run to go into the corner from 40m out without a hand touching him - that is mightly impressive and rugby as it should be!
Beats both Williams tries and Ashtons hands down!
By Warrior, at January 14, 2011 2:36 pm
No truelly unbelievable tries this year...israel daggs is defo teh best solo effort and i reckon Hooks for wales vs the boks is the best worked team try.
By Anonymous, at January 14, 2011 2:38 pm
Shane Williams v. Scotland. No argue.
By Laura Guglielmo, at January 14, 2011 2:44 pm
Im a Welshman and I have to say it was Corey Jane / Mils Muliaina's try for me. Beale's run was amazing as well.
By Anonymous, at January 14, 2011 2:55 pm
Chris Ashton ! What a try !
By Unknown, at January 14, 2011 3:33 pm
The best try has to be a try where the defenders don't just miss tackles. AAC's try they do and with dagg's. Carter's is classy and Ashton's is very good for a few reasons. The pass from Lawes is top class and Ashton has a lot of work to do. Wales tries involve the best team rugby
By Anonymous, at January 14, 2011 7:28 pm
Why did the French players stop chasing the ball in the first Shane Williams Welsh try? Seems like the ref screwed up there somewhere or the Frenchies were napping.
No Shane Williams vs Scotland shouldn't be the best, it was at the end of a game where Scotland were down to 13 with a scrum half on the wing and the backline rejigged to accomodate a multitude of horrific injuries including one than nearly ended a life.
No Scottish tries, ah well...
By Anonymous, at January 14, 2011 11:16 pm
when i saw james hook on the list i assumed it was his against england in the 6n last year.
found gap, side-stepped JW with someone on his shorts, then huge hand-off, this one is good too.
By mat, at January 14, 2011 11:56 pm
these 25 second clips, while fair (in that they are even handed) don't do justice to some of the tries.
So its hard to judge. Or harder.
Ashton's try is all the better if you watch it on youtube (or a while back on RD) because of the audacious step and dummy _beyond the tryline_ to initiate the move. That was just so cheeky, under such pressure, that it created, out of nothing, acres of space.
Without that bit its not the same- its just speed.
And Williams against Scotland- yes it was against 13, but what a comeback period they went through- they scored twice at and in injury time. that's real pressure. In the 6N.
I think that the pressure of the occasion needs to be taken into account too, not just the quality .(that's partially why I ranked Fourie's last year- it was a big moment in a big match, which made it 'better' than others which were technically 'as good'.)
O Connors' was great too because of the initial steps to make the try.
I know I'm the first to say this, but I know others are thinking this too- i do think that the balance between nations and genders dilutes the overall thing somewhat.
If it is limited to nations, and the Maori don't get a look in (e.g. Gear vs Eng).....
That said, its good that we get to see more women's rugby - and to be fair, that tackle by the Auzzie winger on the England winger in the women's RWC was one of the best tackles I've seen in any category of Rugby Union.
I suppose its all about the short term vs the long term, and building a bigger, broader more inclusive game...or sth. And it is often the case, as I've said here before, that the women's game turns out to be better than the men's game, for various unusual reasons. (I cited tennis previously, due to the massive error they made in, unlike baseball, allowing wood to be taken over by the various metals as an implement - cue 6ft6 ugfests, power over skills, and the women's game being superior in some respects. And, no its not luddism - sport is about people's skills, not the tools' construction. Except motor racing obviously.)
But these, basically, are not the best 15 tries in the world last year. So I was a little disappointed. I wasn't last year.
Last year, I was trying to decide between individual tries and team tries. This year, I'm trying to decide between about 6 tries.

"france stopped playing for the shane williams try"
lol so chabal, parra and malzeu just let him score? He skinned them all, great try
By Anonymous, at January 15, 2011 5:27 am
Israel Daggs try was the best cos it was against
South Africa in the hardest rugby comp in the world.
If it was against NH team it wouldn't be that special special cos they are shit teams. Chris Ashton try we see it all the time by the AB's its just doing your basics draw and pass whats so great about that !!
By Anonymous, at January 15, 2011 9:37 am
As for an individual point of view, I really like Carter's try. He starts well inside his own half, he isn't really faster than the opposite fullback, but he just runs without a hand laid on him. Although Beale's run is pretty amazing. As a team try, I like Mils' try the most.
There are a few thing already mentioned, that I'd subscribe to:
Ashton's smile/grimmace is priceless
It's a pity, the Maori try against England isn't in contention here. It is the best try last year (IMHO)
Also a shame, that Beale just wins the "almost-try" award this year. That would have been amazing
By Ben, at January 15, 2011 11:18 am
what the hell were those womens' tries doing in there, seriously!
By Anonymous, at January 15, 2011 11:45 am
Looking at these i am amazed at Wales' lack of wins of late, then you see Dan Carter's try and it all makes sense
By Anonymous, at January 15, 2011 11:59 am
Daggs try wins it for me...
But Mils try very close second imo
tyvm and have a nice day :D
By Anonymous, at January 16, 2011 8:40 am
lol anyone with pace could score the Ashton try.Mills or Dagg for me
By Grayditch, at January 16, 2011 1:05 pm
Adam Ashley Cooper or Israel Dagg, both individually brilliant.
Both beat several world class defenders, and created brilliant tries from nothing.
Ashton's was good pace, but came from an illegal turnover, not that impressive.
By Tom, at January 17, 2011 10:41 pm
Shane Williams 2nd try included a blatent forward pass to halpenny so I would rule that out, James O'Connors is also a forward pass to him so ditch that also
I'd give it to Dagg or Contepomi
By Anonymous, at January 18, 2011 5:04 am
I'd have to give it to Israel Dagg, I don't understand how people are voting for that, because it was brilliant. Great individual effort to break 4 tackles against the South Africans. Plus, this was a kid with like 2 caps to his name. I love Williams, but he just ran down the sideline, how is this even a contest?
By gongshow, at January 18, 2011 6:38 pm
Jeez, did Ashley Cooper get knocked out of his boots in the last clip - by his own player? Hilarious!
(Awesome player, like Mitchell, very dependable. And I am a bok fan.)
Yeah, and we don't deserve to be on the list since 2010 was a year to forget!
