Are you ready for Super Rugby 2011?

As you will realise, Super Rugby kicks off tomorrow in New Zealand with the first game of the tournament featuring the Hurricanes and the Highlanders. This year the tournament is expanded to 15, and has a slightly different format to before.

This video, fairly similar to one that was posted a few months back, talks you through how the tournament came to be, from its humble beginnings as the Super 10 some time back. Since then we’ve seen it change its face many times.

Super 10, Super 12, Super 14, and now Super Rugby, the thing that hasn’t changed is the standard of play, entertainment value, and quality on show. It’s something every true rugby fan should be part of. While the tournament has had its critics, mainly coming from up North, it comprises the top three in world rugby and has been the pace setter for many years now.

There are obviously a few reasons for that, weather conditions being one, but attitude, ingenuity, and depth of talent are another. Comparisons to Heineken Cup rugby have always existed, but there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t enjoy both, as they each bring something unique to the table.

There’s also a new side this year, the Melbourne Rebels, which should make things interesting, especially as there’s a former England star flyhalf playing for them in the form of Danny Cipriani, amongst other former Test players.

You can download the official fixture list (.pdf) via the website here.

The following is an interactive, clickable video, using the same technology as the James O'Connor video we posted last year. You can mouse over and click when prompted for more info, or just move your mouse off and watch it like normal.

  • Hey guys, Does anyone here know how to watch Super Rugby if in the US? Seems rugbyzone.com has lost the rights.

  • @ TheFatWombat, please read through the following thread for all sorts of info relating to that.

Where to watch rugby in the states (and elsewhere)

By Blogger RD, at February 17, 2011 6:43 pm

  • You do see defence. Tell me, if NH defence is so great then why do you get spanked year in year out by SH sides? And more to the point, why do NH sides struggle to score tries against SH sides?

By Blogger murph, at February 17, 2011 6:47 pm

  • ha but its not super rugby now remember, its now supe rugby! lol what genius designed the logo

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 17, 2011 7:03 pm

  • finally some real bloody rugby!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 17, 2011 7:04 pm

  • Oh no, the NH/SH stuff is only going to get worse again. There's been a pleasant respite from it in the off season. What RD needs is some sort of entente cordiale regarding the hemispheres.

  • bugger budder and bist yit! lol @ the kiwi accent how do they teach the alphabet it must make no sense to nz kids

By Anonymous Jack, at February 17, 2011 9:50 pm

  • Actually the new zealand accent is said to be the most pure of all the english speaking countries.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 17, 2011 10:35 pm

  • Most pure?

Well I live on the equator, so f*ck you both!

By Anonymous Sam, at February 18, 2011 1:12 am

  • SH spanks NH everyday can't see any argument to that....

By Anonymous all blacks rock my socks, at February 18, 2011 2:47 am

  • @ the NH troll, the reason NH teams "seem" to have better defence is cuz all u dingos do is forward crash play, not to hard to defend that, and everytime u dingos fling it wide, u cant finish ur phases and knock it on.

    oh and p.s.

jimmy cowen is such a muppet.

By Anonymous VictorSoCalRuggger, at February 18, 2011 3:14 am

  • Enough of the debate, everyone knows the SH is overall better anyway.
Although the English team is starting to look pretty good (after a long period of crappiness)
The rest are a bag of shit though.

By Anonymous Jimmy, at February 18, 2011 4:02 am

  • Hands up the SH is usually a bit stronger , but England look really exciting now and France have the flair to beat any team (but only when they feel like it)

By Anonymous Stu drfc, at February 18, 2011 11:28 am

  • True the SH is usually a little stronger but England look really exciting at the moment and France will beat anyone when they are in the right mood.

By Anonymous Stu drfc, at February 18, 2011 11:30 am

  • Yep, we NH's cant beat any SH team ever.

I mean, France Knocked NZ out of the World Cup.

England knocked Australia out of the WC twice, (winning it once, I guess other than Australia they must have played all NH teams)

Autumn of 2009 we saw the Scots draw with Australia, (which is pretty much a win for them)

We saw the saracens beat South Africa

We saw Leicester beat South Africa

Autumn 2010 we saw Scotland beat South Africa

    We saw England beat Australia....

I mean the list goes on, I do not deny that generally the SH beats the NH, but I feel the only team which can consistantly lay claim to that phrase is NZ, the rest of you SH chaps seem to be getting upset every now and again.

And as for NZ, I mean, I cant remember where you came in the 2003 WC, as for the 2007 WC, well France sent you home.

Considering we are all playing the same bloody game, I dont really see why the same old 'we ALWAYS beat you' 'Actually you DONT ALWAYS beat us' mudslinging contest has to begin. or did i just click onto SoccerDump.com

By Anonymous Tricker, at February 18, 2011 2:35 pm

  • Amen to Tricker.

Btw I'm from Holland. We get screwed over all the time. I don't care, I just LOVE rugby

By Anonymous Guy, at February 18, 2011 5:41 pm

  • Tricker you pussy.

NZ, AUS and SA ranked 1, 2 and 3.
Every team has losses but these teams are the most consistent.

    End of story.
