School Of Hard Knocks 2011 - Episode 1
The School of Hard Knocks is back this year with another thoroughly enjoyable series that is set to take you through the highs and lows of building a rugby team from scratch with a group of unemployed Londoners. This is episode one.
It's not the first time this excellent production has been shown on RD, with the previous few series' proving to be really popular amongst young and old. We've even had a few of the guys who took part in the show getting in contact, and also commenting here on the site a few times.
If you're unfamiliar with it, the show features former Test stars Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell as they go about recruiting unemployed youths, this time from Croydon in London. The aim is to get them involved in a rugby team that will hopefully help to change their lives by teaching them lessons both on and off the field.
Discipline, respect, and drive is lacking in many of their directionless lives, even for those who come from privileged backgrounds, so it's fascinating to watch as the coaches form as mentors.
In the first episode they do a bit of recruitment and then head off to meet WBA World Heavyweight champion David Haye, who shows them what it takes to do a bit of training in his world. A few stars stand out, while Will takes a shot in the stomach that he'd rather forget.
The show is already up to the fourth episode so if you're in the UK, you can watch it on Sky Sports 1 on Monday nights. We'll hopefully have all the episodes for you here on RD. If you enjoy it and want to see more, please say so as your feedback is important.
It's 48 minutes long, so kick back, hit the full screen button, and enjoy.

Great great show ! Love it !
I think we definitely take this as an example and do the same in France in the suburbs of cities like Paris, Lyon, Marseille, etc, where there are so many potential talents "wasted".
Keep it coming RD !
BTW, does anybody know the name of the rap theme song at the beginning ?

These guys are scum. They should be put to death before they commit crimes like rape and murder in the near future. Disgraceful.

just watched the first ten minutes and i had to come here and say,I F**KING HATE anyone who says "the british lions".its the british and irish lions.ireland IS NOT a part of britain.
now that i've got that off my chest, great start to the video, looks like a great season already
By Leeners93, at March 25, 2011 10:57 am
Is that Ali G doing the intro voice-over?
By katman, at March 25, 2011 12:11 pm
I'm pretty sure the university guys that have played before are drafted in as the front row. No way you could throw new guys into those positions after a few weeks training. They're fairly big guys, when the three of them are sitting down talking to the camera they look like front row players.

The problem I have with this show is they get wasters on purpose.
If you were to go off what you're seeing you'd think everyone out of work and from poverty is a rude, agressive anti-social fucking eejit.
On a side note, and most of you probably haven't seen past episode 1, Pierre is a legend.
I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right but that little French man has me laughing every episode. The most unathletic guy I've seen in my life, but he's a persistant bugger
By Chris, at March 25, 2011 1:20 pm
Love the show, keep it up!!

Wow..that kid whose sister died....I could not understand one word he was saying. It was hard for me to believe he was actually speaking English....incredible! And the kid at 37 mins who walks out is an idiot...it's a real shame when people are too lazy and stupid to grasp real opportunities that are placed in front of them. No doubt he will blame "the system" "racism" or some other thing when he ends up in prison....the fact is he blew it all by himself.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 9:28 pm
They were known as the British Lions for many years......it wasn't until 1997 that they officially changed the name. So it's not odd for an older person...like the coach who is probably in his 40s.. to say British Lions. Anyway people know what he means.
Stop being so fucking PC!
By JM, at March 25, 2011 9:31 pm
thanks inspiring we want more
By handson, at March 25, 2011 9:33 pm
I feel for these guys. In a way it's not their fault.....their parents have alot to answer for.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 9:46 pm
I'm Irish and couldn't give a shite what they call the lions. When I used to watch him play I cursed Will Greenwood a great number of times...to his credit now that I think of it! What I've seen him do since has led me to believe he's an inspirational charachter who deserves nothing but credit for what he does. Fair play to Scott Quinnell also, was a great player in his time too.
Love to see Rugby used this way, I live in Italy and know they've started using rugby to combat bullying in inner city schools in Rome.
Fantastic sport, fantastic show, keep them coming!

Yeup, teach you to run faster, run harder, sidestep the police, pass the 'goods' to your mate, drive a policeman out the way...and to top it all off that extra time in the gym makes you stronger...

Great show, it really hit home as I myself came from a bad home life and was kicked out at 16. But thanks to a high school rugby coach I found direction and life clarity through the game of rugby. It gave me a flash back to my teen years when the one guy talked about being embarrassed standing in the dole line. That was how I felt. Great show and well done. Rugby can make a difference but you have to want to listen and learn.

By Phil, at March 31, 2011 1:52 pm
Great show.
I don't think calling the Lions the "British and Irish Lions" is P.C like you say. It's just factually wrong. Irish people bristle at any suggestion of Britishness. It's kind of like calling the English German, or something to that effect.
If Germany and England had a team, and many people called them the the "Germanic Lions" you probably wouldn't like it. Not because of an PC consideration, merely because it's completely wrong.
