Toulon smash Perpignan - Tries, hits, and all the best bits

Toulon effectively knocked Perpignan out of the French Top 14 play-offs race with a convincing 43-12 win at Stade Felix Mayol on Saturday.

While news broke today that Gavin Henson has been sacked from the club, Toulon showed on the weekend that he won't be missed as they racked up an impressive bonus-point win, scoring four tries and getting some revenge for their loss in the Heineken Cup.

As you'll see in these comprehensive highlights, the match was packed with big tackling, great skill, and plenty of ambition. Rudi Wulf in particular stood out as a repeat assassin.

Gabi Lovobalavu also showed how dangerous he can be in midfield, and Jonny Wilkinson and Felipe Contepomi both produced some neat touches, and solid goal kicking.

The following highlights are longer than usual, but if you have 15 minutes to spare it worth watching as there was some great rugby on show. If you've only got 3 minutes, make sure you catch the big hit by Wulf early on.

Although Perpignan were blown away, they have a Heineken Cup semi final to deal with this weekend, taking on Northampton Saints at Stadium:MK. We've got tickets to the match so if you're interested, enter here now to stand a chance at winning a pair.

  • Looked like a good game, hopefully henson will come back to the ospreys now and concentrate on rugby

  • Just wondering is there anywhere ya can watch top 14 in english?

  • Lovobalavu is the best!

  • I think that Henson will probably be picked up by the likes of Stade Francais. Can't see him coming back to anywhere in UK/ROI any time soon.

    What a silly man.

  • Nice touch by contepomi there at the end, looked like a little salute to the Toulon fans. Wilkinson looks good with proper centers doesn't he? Too bad England has none.

Would love to watch a game in Toulon.

Anyone know where u can watch games online?

  • what a hit by wulf!

  • Nice match with the usual Mayol ambiance

On a side note, RD could have mentionned that it was maybe the last match of Pierre Mignoni. Maybe not the most gifted scrum-half of the world, but a true warrior who began his career in toulon in 1985.

    To Welsh Osprey,

not so sure Ospreys or another club wants to recall him. when a player is able to say "i want to play the WC with Wales" 2 months ago and finally, finish drunk in a nightclub insulting his captain and team-mates... it sums up the guy. Maybe Stade Français could pick him for their "pink" calendar

  • Bosh. Tremendous hit by Wulf and he also gave a lesson there in how to release the tackled player and get quickly to your feet so you can immediately get hold of the ball. He looked incredibly busy for the first few minutes of the clip. Looked like he was nursing a big shiner at the end there - was there more to that? Commentators I think mentioned a yellow card for him?

Nice to see Wilkinson playing so well. I still reckon the Flood-Wilkinson 10-12 axis has to be tested! As Canadian Content mentions, it does help when you've got good centres. Lovobolavu in particular is immense!

Really??? You'd actually want him back? I mean, we can all appreciate that he is a decent player and his two performances for Toulon showed he hasn't suffered too much for his extended absence, but... What a tool! And after the way he messed your lot about before? If it were my team I wouldn't want an antagonistic, disruptive influence like Henson anywhere near it!

  • Colombes are you really saying that Mignoni started his career when he was 8 years old....Rudi Wulf=Beast

  • wow toulon no.11 looked like he had a good game... til, did he go off?

Nd wilko and contepomi had sonny bill esq off loads love it. also some big hits, nice

  • To anonymous,

lol, sorry not his career, but his first rugby steps with the bejamins ;)

  • Rudy Wulf from the Auckland Blues :)

  • All of the Toulon tries came from lose or scrappy balls, they have to do better in the semis

  • Thanks for the extended highlights, keep them long!

  • I can't see hy anyone would want Henson.... He is clearly more focussed on his ego than on the team he represents!

  • first try from toulon.. he ran behind a lot of his own players

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2011 6:27 pm

  • Loved the extended highlights, although you think in 15 minutes the yellow card could have been fitted in :P

Wilkinson looks brilliant for Toulon, would be nice to see him get a proper run for England at some point before the World Cup. Toulon do have very dominant forwards in front of him, and centres outside him though, so may not work as well

By Blogger RedYeti, at April 26, 2011 6:35 pm

  • And it was Toulon's farewell to :
    - Pierre Mignoni (retirement)
    - Rudi Wulf (back to NZ, there are all black wings seats to take ! Good luck man)
    - Monsieur George Smith (Sanyo Wild Knights, Japan)
    - Unforgetable Saimone Taumoepeau (off to Castres)

1 round left to be in play offs, away Montpellier.

    THIS IS WAAAARRRR !
    COME ON TOULON !

  • Strange, after I heard the score I thought it would have been a great watch. I actually found those highlights a bit boring, apart from Wulf's mission to cause as much bodily damage to as many people in Blue shirts as he could. Not much good running rugby apart from a few flashes of brilliance from Wilkinson, more defensive errors than attacking quality. Or maybe I'm watching too much Crusaders/Reds and have the bar set too high....

  • Great highlights RD, thx for putting the time in. Could do w/o the clip of JW missing a kick and putting it out on the full, unless that's to show me that Contenpomi > JW, which I already knew.

I love how they say George Smith too lolol. George Smeeessss

Flood should be nowhere near JW. Flood has ZERO attacking sense, and JW, especially now playing in France, plays a much more expanded game. Half of floods game is still kicking. =\ Plus they're both too liable to have at 10/12 in defense. Flood will just let players thru and JW will try to smash everyone as hard as he can and injure himself doing so.

Didn't Perpignan win the top14 last year? They look garbage. That team, mostly their backs, look to be the most un-physical bunch as I'd ever seen. Lots of bad arm tackling. Tuilagi I'm sure was an exception. I'll have to agree with H Ball in that I thought 15 min highlight woudl have me on the edge of my seat...apart from the first minute or so, it didn't. Scrappy game and scrappy tries and woeful defense (not trying to start nuttin) from Perpignan.

Would love to see 15min highlights of SupeRugby games :)

  • Would love more of these longer highlights for some of the bigger games through out the year...

By Blogger themull, at April 26, 2011 7:45 pm

  • What fantastic Atmosphere and excellent skills.

However, did anyone feel two of the tries had fairly blatant (To me at least) instances of Shepherding?

I hope someone will chat to the Ref about that.

    Excellent highlight, RD.

  • Great game for the Toulon 13.

Also I know I'm not as qualified as a World Cup winning flyhalf but I can't help but think that JW is quite static receiving the ball from the scrum half and it makes defending a lot easier. Contepomi on the other hand was running on to the ball and the points flowed. I think it would help if JW stood deeper and received the ball with a bit more pace into the hands.

Great crowd as usual looking forward to the playoffs.

  • Good to see Rory Lamont continuing to get a start, play well and even score for Toulon! How he didn't start for Scotland in the 6N i don't know. Hope he gets a chance at the WC! Thenagain, if Robinson plays that useless idiot Jackson then the 15 shirt will need to go to Mossy for his goalkicking alone regardless of who is better in other areas! :(

By Anonymous Believer, at April 26, 2011 9:35 pm

  • ^^^^ no offence dude, but i thought Ruaridh Jackson was one of the best players on the pitch when he started....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 12:20 am

  • I love the start with all the shouting

By Blogger Chief Financial Shaman, at April 27, 2011 1:39 am

  • Lamont got the try so can't argue with that. But I cannot believe he is the first choice 15 for Toulon. Up until the try he made so many mistakes, can't remember them off the top but a turnover near his line was one and I think (might be wrong) there was a poor kick straight out into touch. Last week there was a simple 2 on 1 for the try but he didn't pick up on it, went for the line...no try. Im just saying! Hyper critical? Maybe, it's late and I apologise. I look forward to eating my words come Saturday!

  • Why isn't Caucau's fail in there? Surely it will get its own post?

By Blogger Manuel, at April 27, 2011 2:25 pm

  • ^^
    wrong game, my fail.
Anyway, it deserves its own post

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 3:12 pm

  • Henson is overrated....apart from winning the 6Ns, what has he done? looked average against good opposition

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 5:14 pm

  • Caucau's playing for Toulouse not Toulon...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 5:58 pm

  • hence the correction

  • "Just wondering is there anywhere ya can watch top 14 in english?"

i know as far as america is concerned, they show 2-3 games a week on espn3.com

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 6:43 pm

  • Good to see team playing well without Henson. Let's just hope he is kicked out permanently and can focus on his true passions - dancing, fighting and hair gel.

By Blogger Jack Gray, at April 27, 2011 8:53 pm

  • good game to watch...

surely wilko must be considered now to start showing that sort of attacking threat, even if at centre.

critics say we lack ideas in attack at times and here is a player who can bring this to the squad

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2011 1:22 am

  • Poor defense...

By Anonymous Big Harry, at May 02, 2011 12:46 am

  • look what Jonny Wilkinson is capeale when he has centres that will offer something to him! players like manu tuilangi will run at defenders all day without being told, but hape et al. look like they have to be told what to do, and cant do anything if a move hasnt been called.

Jonny showing what a quality player he still is.
