Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 2

Round 3 of the Super 14 is already under-way so better late than never, we've got a pick of the best tries for you from Round 2.

With only a handful of high scoring matches, a few of these tries come from the same matches, as it was the Bulls in particular who put on an impressive showing against the Blues in Pretoria.

The powerful Pierre Spies scored two excellent tries, showing exactly how blessed the Springboks are at number 8 with strong, fast runners. Ryan Kankowski, the other Bok contender for the Eightman position this year, finished off a nice try of his own as the Sharks beat the Lions.

League convert Timana Tahu got on the end of a nicely placed Kurtley Beale crosskick as the Waratahs beat the Chiefs in Sydney, while Bryan Habana showed that there's no substitute for raw gas with his nice chase to score against the Blues.

The most exciting finish to a match so far this year though, has to the the Brumbies vs Crusaders clash in which Mark Gerrard scored a try with time up, equalling the scores before Stirling Mortlock kept his head to kick the winning conversion.

All in all, some nice tries for those of you who missed them. We hope you enjoy.

  • I take back what I said, anyone see the shit games today in the Super 14? Two error strewn boring games so far.

Back to my first love of La Crosse.

  • Nice tries. Douche comments.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 4:25 pm

  • No great games this week anyway

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 4:28 pm

  • try and show the same tries with top 14 teams there will be about 20 comments about how nice some of these tries are but how the defense sucked. Look at the 2nd spies try, there's 3 missed tackles in half a second; wonder why such commentators suddenly shut up about the defense when it comes to super 14
I still think it's the world greatest championship, i'm just tired at hearing pseudo-analytical comments on how that try was more due to shitty defense than great attacking skills

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 5:17 pm

  • Wow awesome Super 14 defence for Spies try, how come jamestheconvict isn't so critical of the defence?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 6:35 pm

  • France v Wales:
Errors made (HT) 11 (26 at FT)

    Stormers v Blues:
Errors made (HT) 13 (game still being played)

    More jamestheconvict nonsense.

  • super 14 = lousy defense

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 7:34 pm

  • The Brumbies were lucky that wasn't called for crossing/obstruction...I'm glad they weren't - I don't think it really affected the tackle attempt - but the ref was probably within his right to blow the whistle.

  • Jamestheconvict hasnt got a clue about rugby, hes just stuck in his SH bubble of arrogance.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 9:14 pm

  • Would you guys prefer if RD only posted NH rugby for the NH people, and SH rugby for the SH people?

    Get a grip guys.

  • Pointless reading the comments anymore, jamestheconvict obviously has some inferiority issues.

  • ummmmm were was the big hits, worst pick of the week video everrrrr

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2009 1:14 pm

  • They only show the top tries in this one.
Cuz of newscorp it's hard to get much footage for free.
There were some good tries this week, the Force had a couple of good ones and the Tahs scored a cracker.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2009 1:30 pm

  • Spies is a fuckin machine!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2009 2:33 pm

  • Spies and Kamkowski's tries are simply awsome cant see any of our back rowers keeping up with them for the lions tour! Brilliant stuff yeah ok a few missed tackles but their speed and agility is pretty special. Cant see many of the big lumbersome english forwards makin it too South Africa think it would be suicide for the lions on those hard fast pitches.

  • what is the name of song?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2009 7:30 pm

  • "The Blues edged past the Stormers 14-8 in front of a stunned Newlands crowd to end their South Africa road trip on a winning, albeit boring, note on Saturday.

The match failed to live up to its expectations with neither team producing anything worth the admittance fee charged for the near capacity home crowd in Cape Town"

What "Super" reason is that jamestehcocksucker ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2009 11:53 am

  • Regardless of the hemispheric debate i think the claims that defense is lousy in the super 14 because people fell off spies is a little misguided: Did you see what he did to England in 2007?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YweI0TpeGA

The guy is just a crazy athlete.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2009 4:07 pm

  • crusaders and brumbies game def highlight for me! the rest were meh...loving the super 14 though woop, woop :D

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2009 10:59 pm

  • I think you guys are all a bit selective in your choice of reference.

With ANY try scored in ANY game in EITHER hemisphere there MUST have been a lack of defense. Come on guys show some intelligence when having a debate - this isnt a school yard.

Just because someone (eg. jameshe convict) sets a trap, doesnt mean you have to take it.

Now going back top Super 14 and the defense - did none of you ssee the Chiefs.Sharks game this weekend. The Sharks are the poster boys for defense.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2009 1:45 pm

  • I really enjoyed that rugbydump - cheers. Good rugby is good rugby no matter what hemisphere you come from.

As for Mortlock, the guy is a legend. Of all the Aussies I wish had played for England (and there are lots and lots) Mortlock would definitely be in the top 5 (along with Lynagh, Campo, Eales and Latham)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2009 6:40 pm

  • ^^ totally agree man! Being a kiwi, Mortlock is a true legend in my eyes! shoot i even support the Brumbies because hes in it!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2009 10:07 pm

  • Hey, is that Todd Clever there at 2:12 - playing no. 19?

Good to see he's actually getting some action for the Lions!

Though he didn't look to be having too much fun there with his face shoved into the ground...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 04, 2009 7:34 pm

  • Speece what a beast

    No.8s for the win
