Midweek Madness - Romanian mass brawl
This is the big fight that took place in Bucharest on Saturday in a match between Dinamo Bucaresti and Farul Constanta. We’ve found the two clips which we feel feature the most comprehensive coverage of the incident.
The league leading rivals came to blows only minutes after kickoff, with the fight beginning at the scrum, but soon spreading across the field, involving all players, and apparently some of the spectators too.
When order was restored, the referee showed red cards Dinamo centre Darie Curea and prop Flavius Dobre, both of whom are Romanian internationals.
Nine players were sent to hospital after the match, with three Georgian players being among those hurt, according to Constanta’s coach Virgil Tudose.
The Romanian Rugby Federation has handed suspensions to two Farul players and seven from Dinamo, with the Farul president and club coach also being penalised, along with the Dinamo trainer.
The Romanian Rugby federation said it "condemned the players for conduct devoid of fair-play".
Dinamo president Elisabeta Lipa said the club coaches would be dismissed "if it emerges they incited the violence".
The game was apparently won 3-0 by Dinamo Bucaresti, although there has been talk about the result being altered (as punishment) following the suspensions.
Time: 01:32 & 07:33
Note: The first clip is taken from a fan in the crowd. The second is a longer, real time clip.

1.15 in the top vid. That bloke got sat down. Good, as he was punching people all over the place!
Disgusting tho, just not the french it seems!
By Fridge, at April 15, 2009 12:35 pm
Pathetic
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 12:48 pm
Brings the whole sport into disrepute. They are disgraceful, they should get lengthy bans. Seems like the red team were more agressive and not bothered with actually playing rugby.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 12:49 pm
i think its fair to say the red team totaly had the upper hand in that fight, if you watch the second vid from behind the scrum u see that its the red team that instigates the fight and watch the red 9 he swings a punch in on ether the prop of hooker.
Not somthing thats good for the sport, but never the less always funny to watch i must say.
By Levi Smith, at April 15, 2009 12:51 pm
disgrace...dinamo should be banned!
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:03 pm
i can't stand the whole 'stick up for your team-mates" thing which happens in rugby everywhere, this you are not in the playground now, you're grown ups
that said no 15 just throws the ball at some one instead of scoring a try makes me laugh
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:04 pm
Actually felt ill watching that! The saddest part is that was probably the coaches who incited the violence. The red team needs to lose all their points and full points with the bonus to go to the team in the white.
That was awful...and doesn't represent the 99.5% of the teams and supporters of the great game.
By Just a Fan, at April 15, 2009 1:06 pm
i know its a physical game and sometimes things can go off but continued fighting and even running 40m to join in a fight is wrong.
red 9 throw an uppercut to the prop in the scrum, thats cowardly, the man is scrummaging.
there is no way the result can stand is there??
for a start white looked like scoring a try when the fight started.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:10 pm
that looked like it was planned by the red team.
there wasn't anything that triggered it and everyone started fighting at the same time. it didn't stem from one incident they all just kicked off together.
i'd hope the red teams coaches will be in a bit of bother.
also there was a pretty decent scoring chance for the other team when it all started so i'd say they deserve the points because of that as well.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:12 pm
Seems like the red team decided to have a bit of '99' call..
Absolutely disgraceful, I'm ashamed to play the same game as some of those people.
By Wibble, at April 15, 2009 1:30 pm
That ws hilarious if bad.
red 15 throwing the ball at someones head about 50 seconds in in vid 1 and white 9 donkey kick vid 2. best moments
By jej, at April 15, 2009 1:38 pm
Jesus Christ, that was old school rugby, like the French league in the sixties or something.
The guys in Red just went mental and belted the hell out of the white blokes. It looked like they set out to do it. Crazy bastards.
And no, it doesn't bring the sport into disrepute anywhere outside of Romania.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:39 pm
If you can only assert your dominance on another team illegally through cheap cowardly shots, you're just accepting that you're worse than the other at the game. Red 9 and 6 (?) should be banned from the sport, pikey scum.
How much more satisfying is completely booming someone legally compared to throwing some, frankly embarrassingly bad, punches?
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:42 pm
Ahaa, the ball tossed at the back of the bloke's head?! What the shit is that?
...cracks me up.
But yeah, this is some silly stuff...
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 1:44 pm
not only do they behave like little kids, but they fight like them, too.
what grown man runs around swinging his arms wildly, or throws a ball at the back of someone's head?
By elliot, at April 15, 2009 1:48 pm
Des gros cons cette équipe rouge...poncutés de lâches!
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 2:00 pm
Bakground info: Romania lost in Georgia this spring a close and important rugby game, and the players promise to take revange on the Georgian national players (4 of the players plays for Farul Constanta white shirts)at nr 2, 4, 5 and 8....
Completely planned for by the red team.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 2:00 pm
That was a definite 99 call! Watching too man Lions videos. Terrible stuff.
By thebossanova, at April 15, 2009 2:04 pm
this is a fucking discrace, you've got people getting punched up for no apparent reason...
By meatyq, at April 15, 2009 2:08 pm
It seems the commentator said that the white team started a fight in the locker room before the game, wich explains why it is so sudden...
By Suntzu, at April 15, 2009 2:13 pm
I don't think it was the scrumhalf who started it. Look closely in the first video and there's clearly something happening between the red tighthead and white loosehead. Otherwise why would the white number 1 swing for the tighthead rather than the scrum half?
By James, at April 15, 2009 2:23 pm
number 13 red also ran at some random guy who wasnt even close to or involved in the fight and launched into him. Some of these players should receive very lengthy bans even go to court.
Its just not acceptable
By Sean, at April 15, 2009 2:33 pm
What an embarrasment, this is all over the news. Just think about the message it's sending out. People who don't know the game already think it's about violence rather than skill. Both teams should be fined and docked points immediately.
By Andy, at April 15, 2009 2:41 pm
Why did this make the news all over the world?
It doesn't look THAT different to the brawls you get in Top14
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 2:43 pm
this clip shows why romanian rugby is absolutely crap! PATHETIC!!
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 2:45 pm
this video made it to the homepage of the popular German SPIEGEL magazine - rugby clubs here are trying hard to get more people to play and then videos come up ruining the reputation again(or attracting the wrong guys...). What a disgrace!
By crosser, at April 15, 2009 2:50 pm
eh, disgrace to world rugby.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 3:01 pm
look at the second video at 2.08 - the white 8 is simply supporting the backs and some red player comes from nowhere to hit him for no reason!
By Unknown, at April 15, 2009 3:55 pm
i am thoroughly disgusted and hope the kids turn up for training. this has unfortunatly not helped rugbys course in anyway
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 4:01 pm
i can't help but to think that this looks planned, an ambush, as the ball leaves the scrum the red 9 is already giving his licks to the prop, who is helpless as he is still engaged. This malicious act should lead to way more than suspensions...
By drewsky, at April 15, 2009 4:05 pm
What a bunch of dickheads... That's worse than Top14 or even PRO D2. It lasted longer and was for absolutely no reason, those guys should be banned for an entire season. There are things that mustn't be done on the pitch. Massive brawls are always ugly. A 1vs1 fight is okay they fix their problem fairly, it may happen..but 15vs15 is just ugly and disappointing.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 4:24 pm
disgrace... i little fight in rugby once in a while is expected but this is just pure stupidness, i cant belive how CHEAP some of them shots were
ryebye
By ryebye, at April 15, 2009 4:46 pm
wow tht escalated quickly
By el nino, at April 15, 2009 5:02 pm
It's disguting! These guys can't call themselves rugby players, there are like 4 red guys kicking one white.
Ok french rugby is sometimes violent but nothing compare to this, it's surely a planned agression, you said infamous call?
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 5:20 pm
Rugby is a man's game, you expect the odd punch u but even the french wouldn't get that kind of a barny going....both teams should be fined and players banned and fined also. thats ridiculous, to think they can do that. Shit players always revert to that kind of stuff.
By Waldo, at April 15, 2009 5:32 pm
It seems that the Romanian white players are not supporting their own Georgian white players.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 5:34 pm
awesome, why can't everyone just enjoy a good old scrap, everyone please stop leaving the "disgraceful" comments, we don't care about your opinions
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 5:46 pm
Munster DOES look unbeatable!
By piaruskov, at April 15, 2009 6:05 pm
the red team must have realise they ran out of backs to stop the try. Hence, starts a fight and get over with it
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 6:55 pm
"Munster DOES look unbeatable!"
haha, nice...
By Samto, at April 15, 2009 7:35 pm
the fight was started by red and it looks like they planned it. They kept it going and threw as many sucker punches as possible.
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 8:07 pm
Yeah, Apocalypsis Now!
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 8:58 pm
knock-on, scrum red, no?
By Unknown, at April 15, 2009 9:09 pm
That was a kickass Brawl, at least they did it the right way
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 9:16 pm
An absolute fucking disgrace, some of them cowards should get court for some of them cheapshots. To the users saying it was 'great' - What the fuck are ye on about? Oh wait I get it, ye are pussies like the cheapshot throwing idiots in the videos. Anyone who condones that type of behavior is nothing but a fucking anal wart.
I witnessed a player lose sight in one of his eyes permanently over a cheap shot, inflicting player got a broken leg and rib on a tackle by three for his troubles :) Cunt deserved it anyways.
What ye on about Munster for? Munster are above any shite like this.
Disgusted rugby fan
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 9:26 pm
It is just a brawl, we've seen many like this in ProD2 right?
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 9:36 pm
That's just horrible for rugby!!!
The red team are a punch of bullkies for sure. They should all be banned from ever playing rugby again. But the white team??? What the f*ck were they doing?? Bunch of cowards!!
I don't encourage fighting in rugby, but if your mates are being jumped you better be throwing some punches back. The hooker was trying but too much of his "boys" were too busy being B*TCHES
By Anonymous, at April 15, 2009 9:50 pm
to the 2nd before last anonymous, I will lay things down for you: I thought it would be funny to refer to the red team in the video as Munster, because the discrepency between the very professional Munster and this bunch of fucking pikeys could trigger a humorous association. But apparently you don't think so.
By piaruskov, at April 15, 2009 9:58 pm
^^^ LMAO.
Good fight, not going to effect rugby at all.
By Boz, at April 15, 2009 10:55 pm
red 9 started it
pointless
By adrian, at April 15, 2009 11:15 pm
yeah we were talking about this on The Rugby Forums, some crazy stuff and believe to be a directed fight against Georgians with the 99 call
By Joe, at April 15, 2009 11:38 pm
The first results from the Disciplinary commission:
Dinamo (Red):
6 Players banned for 7 weeks
1 Player banned for 10 weeks

"knock-on, scrum red, no?"
lol class comment
By FrankyH, at April 16, 2009 12:53 am
This clip made me sick. You fight a man one-on-one, and from the front. You don't beat up a guy with 3 of your teammates, thats just pathetic. I'm just embarrassed to have watched that, both teams should be banned
By gongshow, at April 16, 2009 12:54 am
I miss romania it was a good old country there man i got into a lot of fights when i was playing halfback
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 1:22 am

By jammy, at April 16, 2009 1:50 am
one word. disgraceful.
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 2:19 am
No rugby shown in our country (Germany) in national TV stations, but this shit makes it into the prime news. What a disgrace! The white team should have sored the try, instead of getting involved
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 10:47 am
oh, get over it, no one died.
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 12:52 pm

can anyone translate the conversation between the ref and number eight? sounds like he should be sent off aswell, backtalking to the ref like that...
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 4:02 pm
simple as this lads if you have an issue with someone show some respect and hit them when you are staring eye to eye and he is on his feet anything less makes you a coward ...
this bullshit of forearms to the bac of the head and 4 on ones is not what some people say as a great scrap or funny WRONG! its fucking cowardice...
By number7, at April 16, 2009 4:11 pm
This is insane. Even in the old days, when the Boks were described as violent (rather than physical), they adopted the "1 in all in" approach, a fight very rarely escalate to a full scale battle like this
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2009 5:25 pm
My Romanian skills are non-existent. Can anyone translate some of it?
at the five minute mark, you see the referee red card two Red players.
The Red captain then begins to plead with the referee about "two" -- was he asking why #2 white wasn't tossed?
If so, seems to have a lot of nerve.
Disgusting display. Reminds me of some of the occasional horror stories in the USA club scene. Where it appears that one team "hunts" a few players, and engages in two or three 3-4 vs 1 fights, rather than fifteen 1v1 fights.
If Georgian players were specifically targeted, and their teammates did nothing to protect them, I hope they quit those clubs ASAP.
By cheyanqui, at April 16, 2009 6:37 pm
Georgians were targeted specifically. Romania lost to Georgia 3 straight games, so they are angry and jealous. Revenge is coming next year when Romania plays Georgia again. Romanian aggressors will get their asses kicked, the cowards!
By Unknown, at April 16, 2009 7:20 pm
By the way. Look at white shirt number 2. This is Natriashvili of Georgia. Look how bravely he tries to fight off pack of hyenas. Real man.
By Unknown, at April 16, 2009 7:24 pm
^^^^
i agree took balls to stand his ground
By number7, at April 17, 2009 12:58 am
I agree with everybody on this one. Bunch of cowards on the red team.
I aslo agree with cheyanqui.. the playes from the white team that didn't help out should quite the team. They should be ashamed of themselves as well.
By islandstylin, at April 17, 2009 1:55 am
islandstylin,
actually what I meant was that the Georgian players should quit or leave those clubs.
Although your reverse argument it great. The non-supporting teammates -- likely of non-Georgian stock -- should basically be tossed from the club or not have their contracts renewed.
By cheyanqui, at April 17, 2009 2:59 am
George,
No. 2 was a beast. should be made captain.
By Boz, at April 17, 2009 8:41 am
Something else you dont see in the SH game, down here we play rugby and leave the fights to the morons up north..lol...
Though, id sure like to see Bakkies, Beeeaaast and Deysel throw a few. LOL
By semperfimamba, at April 17, 2009 8:22 pm
to the comment above
yep up here we leave the convicts to the south
By Anonymous, at April 17, 2009 8:43 pm
The guys in red started throwing them as soon as the ball went in. Red 9 should go for years (white 9 ain't no angel with the kick either but at least he was trying to break up a 4 on 1). I also like the 10? who ran from the far side of the scrum around to chop the white 8 in the back of the head!! The red guys just kept finding people to punch while the guys in white were backing up to let it cool down. You even see in tyhe background on of the red centres grab a lonely white guy and smack him totally away from the original. Totally premeditated by Red.....
What of Suntzu comment .... did something ahppen beforte the game?? I would love to know
By ned2or3, at April 18, 2009 7:33 am
It all began with Georgia vs Romania game one month ago. Georgia won the game practically ending Romania's chances to qualify for World cup in New Zealand in 2011. There was an incident involving Romanian hooker who started punching Georgian forward and got his ass kicked by the same number 2 Natriashvili. The loss coupled with jealousy made Romania promise to get back at Georgians in Romanian championship. This is the background for this incident.
By Anonymous, at April 18, 2009 5:47 pm
it's me GEORGE. I wrote that last comment as anonymous cause I'm too lazy to create an account
By Anonymous, at April 18, 2009 5:49 pm
Talentless thugs.
By Bearded Clam, at April 19, 2009 2:02 pm
that was awful mun..
the guy throwing the ball at an opponent's head was..just childish.
What spectators were fighting though?
Looks like only 5 people turned up, and i can see why.
By Anonymous, at April 19, 2009 10:25 pm
Go play Rugby League if you want to watch this kind of boorish shit.
By Travisty, at April 20, 2009 1:58 am
i reckon the comment about the romania vs. georgia revenge is correct: #8 white picks up the ball and launch the combination, follows the backs and pays no attention with what happens in the scrum, but from the first kick in the scrum #13 red starts running straight around the scrum and goes after #8 white. If that's not an assigned target, I don't know what it is! Assault with premeditation, isn't that a crime in some countries?
By francois, at April 20, 2009 8:23 am
god the crying on here is sickening.
No one died, get over it.
It was amusing.
By Anonymous, at April 21, 2009 8:49 am
cheyanqui
Here's the translation for the 5:00 discussion:
Referee: "So I take full responsibility after confronting with the touch judges: you for swearing and fighting, you there...[hit]defenseless player, thank (shows red card) you, thank…
Red: “But their no 2, mr. referee…Mr. referee…” “Please get out, please get out” “Mr. referee, mr. referee (puts hands together), mr. referee!” “I have a request, come here please! So my request: can you consider that at this moment you can still play rugby?” Mr. referee, but we didn’t start it!” “Please, at this moment can you consider you can still play rugby?” “We didn’t start it!” "I consider that you can no longer control your fellow players” “But did you see no.2 swearing at me, mr. referee?” Please…please…”
By T., at April 21, 2009 6:36 pm
Thanks T.
i guess the essence of the dialogue was the referee asking the white captain if he felt he could control his players and carry on.
The white captain in response is like "we didn't even start it".
I frankly can't believe that the referee was even open to discussing a continuation of the match. I "HOPE" the ref already had his mind made up to suspend the match, and the discussion with the captain was a formality.
I really home the FRR hits these players hard with sanctions (seems like they did).
However, given the obvious cross-border tenor of the game (i.e., the baggage from the ROM-GEO test), perhaps the IRB should do a review.
Particularly if Romanian players are getting off with a slap on the wrist from Romanian citing commissioners.
By cheyanqui, at April 22, 2009 3:18 am
the reds are so much worse, they are smacking guys on the ground (which is bad form), and everytime it seems to die down, a red guy smacks someone. there needs to be some punishment by there nation rubgy union and indeed the IRB
By Anonymous, at April 22, 2009 10:47 am
disgusting. they are not rugby players!
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2009 2:24 pm
I see evryone blaming the romanians for this fight, i read that some of you thik that romanians are jealous because they lost against georgia. the actual motive of this fight was the nr 2 from the white team who playes for georgia and forgot that he is playng for a romanian club and started swearing at the romanian players in the match that the national teams played. nr2 u deseved evry punch!!!
