Midweek Madness - Substitute that bloody Ref

We’ve featured quite a few referee related clips here on RD in the past, most of which have involved the ref being knocked over, tackled, losing his footing, and last week we even saw a ref ‘tackle’ a player. Today’s clip though, is a first.

Stade Francais beat Castres 21-16 in the Top 14 on Friday night courtesy of a late try by young French international Mathieu Bastareaud.

The win has all by sealed the Parisians place in the Top 14 Semi Finals.

The moment we’re showing you today though happened in the first half and resulted in referee Jean-Pierre Matheu leaving the field for good.

Poor old Matheu found himself in the middle of a Stade and Castres sandwich, with big Rodrigo Capo Ortega's head colliding with his lip.

No prizes for guessing who came off second best in that confrontation.

  • i remember a video here on RD with a tackled-ref-compilation and in it a ref being replaced in a game that definitely looked like it was between eruopean teams, but i can't say if it's from the HK. go and search the site yourself :-P

  • Deffinetly a pretty nasty hit, and feel sorry for the guy. Have to say though have been plenty of times I would've liked to do that to a ref.

  • I think Bergamasco's initial hit with the head was made on purpose, lately he's not gettin along well with them

  • Poor ref. Stuck between a fiercy italian back-row (MA. Bergamasco) and a beefy uruguayan lock (Capo-Ortega)...hardcore.

  • Watched the game live and the sub ref ground the game to a halt, Blew up for every little thing. commentators said that he was having stitches put in by the Stade Francais medical staff. Good to see a ref hit now and again keeps them in check, makes them think about their postitioning lol

  • I like how the Stade prop sees the ref is hurt so he goes around the ruck and steals the ball. Good work
