Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 10

As Round 11 of the Super 14 comes to an end, we look back at some of the best tries of last weekend’s action, with our weekly Super 14 Pick of the Week, this time for Round 10.

The Blues brushed aside the Highlanders in the same match that produced the Jimmy Cowan red card that we featured earlier in the week. Isaia Toeava scored one of the Blue’s better tries on the night after a nice run from wing Rudi Wulf.

Jimmy Goperth, who was the victim of the Cowan hit, scored a great try himself as he spotted some space and dived over a pile of bodies to score a rather unique try.

The Brumbies and the Bulls played out a classic match in Canberra as the home side snuck home, with impressive flyhalf Christian Lealiifano scoring at the death.

Bryan Habana got himself another intercept try, but looked surprisingly sluggish as Brumbies wing Francis Fainifo caught up to him, but then received a hand in the face for his effort.

Lions wing Henno Mentz seems to have found the form that he had when playing with the Sharks a few years back, as he scored a hatrick against the Reds in Brisbane.

Mike Delaney beat a whole stack of hapless Cheetahs in Bloemfontein to score for the Chiefs, and in Durban the returning Richie McCaw scored for the Crusaders against the Sharks.

There were some nice tries all in all, as another weekend of Super 14 rugby had us entertained thoroughly. We’ll have this weekend’s POW up soon.

  • WOW Lealifano almost caught Habana, it would be a awesome try saver against the fastest runner in the game, but the handoff was well used by Habana

By Anonymous Manfred, at April 26, 2009 12:22 am

  • LOL, it was Fainifo, I always get confused with them and Lealifano.

By Anonymous Manfred, at April 26, 2009 12:24 am

  • I don't think any of them stand a chance against the British and Irish Lions.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2009 10:28 am

  • The McCaw try was nothing to write home about.
Lealifano chase was awesome, but Habana's palm just said "Not today bru!"
Pretty average tackling on display, everyone seeming to go high, and either failing to hold the man or getting handed off.

  • jimmy gothpel try was awesome!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2009 12:36 pm

  • Why has habana lost so much pace? In 2007 he was lethal but i havent heard him do much since. Still knows how to score the odd try though.

By Anonymous KeithChegwin, at April 26, 2009 3:04 pm

  • just for whoever asked the song is called baracoda or something like that...dont know who by though

also loved jimmy gothpels try with the big mad jump...serious bita stuff lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2009 4:35 pm

  • We may aswel put gethin jenkins on the wing for the lions if habana's that slow ;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2009 4:53 pm

  • Shocking tackling on every try there. This super 14 is really lacking intensity atm

By Anonymous jojojo, at April 26, 2009 5:05 pm

  • The tackling style has changed due to how often players off-load in the tackle. If you go low and wrap tackle all day the players just dump-of to sullport creating a gap in the def. Check the Turner dump off to his lock as an example. Creat low wrap tackle - Try!

By Anonymous Boz, at April 26, 2009 7:30 pm

  • I thought the tackling was a bit piss poor too. Made the tries look better than they were

By Anonymous Matthew, at April 26, 2009 8:50 pm

  • The high tackling to avoid the off load is somewhat excusable, but not on the Delaney try, you've got to take a man low that close to the line. Some fantastic offloads mine you!

By Anonymous Canadian Content, at April 26, 2009 9:02 pm

  • "WOW Lealifano almost caught Habana, it would be a awesome try saver against the fastest runner in the game, but the handoff was well used by Habana"

Clearly he is not the fastest runner in the game as Fainifo caught up with him despite starting nearly 10 metres behind

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 26, 2009 9:56 pm

  • Wow some pissy negative comments here...

By Anonymous lame, at April 27, 2009 12:17 am

  • Snoozer 14 this season. At least theres a chance of another side apart from the Crusadars winning it like 75% of the other years.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 12:32 am

  • Whinge winge winge, the tackling's bad.
christ's sake, what a load of bullcrap.
We'll take education on defence from nh players and supporters when your teams actually beat ours more than about 14% of the time.

  • Habana seems to have bulked up a lot more than when he first started- might have reduced his speed a bit??? or maybe fainifo is just really fast...

By Anonymous Tom, at April 27, 2009 2:27 am

  • You guys talk about the SH being dominant but the only team we (NH) really struggle against is the all blacks. I hate it when aussies claim SH to be amazing when they are an average team themselves.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 4:00 am

  • So they're average, and yet they haven't been beaten at home by a NH side in six years. They also regularly beat NZ and SA and win the mojority of their away tests against NH opposition. So what do you base your idiotic theories on?
Obviously not on facts or statistics, cuz that would prove you wrong.
The fact that you said that NH teams only struggle against NZ,when SA are world champions shows what your opinion is worth. Nothing.

  • cant wait for shane williams burns habana , part 2 ;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 12:27 pm

  • Kinda lame to moan about defence, and then brag about shane williams... think about that for a sec? ;)

By Anonymous FrankyH, at April 27, 2009 12:56 pm

  • You can't compare league/cup competitions to international sides.

I know southern hemisphere people are thick but when will they realise that?

If this was the case, England would be football World Champions and Germany would be bottom of the heap.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 1:19 pm

  • joe you're a complete dumbass. sad to see how huge stupidity can be in some places.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 2:04 pm

  • ok, number 1: rugby isnt football thats why i play/watch it, and number 2: people from the southern hemisphere thick? what a thick comment.
anyway back to the rugby... good to see habana score! he has bulked up and worked on other areas of his game - pace cant last forever but interceptions and big hits can. not sure if he should make it into the bok side with other guys like nokwe, mentz, ndungane tearing it up, but because of his experience, he ll be there against the lions. cant wait to see williams bounced

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 5:17 pm

  • You don't watch football? Not even Rugby Football?

Durr, what were you saying about the southern hemisphere?

The reference was a comparison, it's the same in all sports.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 9:54 pm

  • All habana had to seperate him from other wingers was pace, without that hes like any other average winger (Cueto, Sackey etc) Only there to run in tries but offer little else.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 27, 2009 10:41 pm

  • THe Delaney try was shocking, i counted 6 missed tackles and all players who should be better than that, the guys not even quick!

By Anonymous What goes on tour, goes on facebook, at April 27, 2009 10:47 pm

  • Look I understand that players in the NH don't know how to break tackles. I understand that you lot play a slower game with shit attacking play.
But if you really want to see terrible defending from players who are supposed to be the best in the NH, just watch Sivivatu's try set up by Umanga against the Lions in 2005. The apparetly infallible defence of the NH, torn to shreds as several players miss tackles, get side stepped or simple run over.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 1:08 am

  • Nothing will change NH supporters opinions, not facts, statistics, the obvious truth, nothing.
    Cuz they're thick.
They've won 14% of all games against SH opposition since 2003, and have not won a single game away from home.
That says it all. They're the equivilant of second division teams.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 7:04 am

  • lot of laa laaa di daa da going on in a never ending argument between north and south rugby i just cant wait to see the all blacks get whooped by the french on there own door step

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 10:47 am

  • Super 14 is national rugby?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 11:51 am

  • It's where the players for the national rugby come from. It's where they are developed and where they learn how to play.
It's higher standard is why the national teams are of a higher standard.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 1:42 pm

  • lets admit the tri nations will always be one step ahead of northern hempishphere teams but i can guarantee that the top4 teams in super 14 wouldnt stand a chance in the heiniken cup

    By Anonymous welshno7, at April 28, 2009 2:54 pm

  • Us NH supporters are referring to S14 defence not international level. Or are you too arrogant to admit S14 defence is poor?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 28, 2009 5:42 pm

  • why would defence be poor? do u think coaches would exclude it from practices??? luckily they remember it when it comes to international matches huh. i reckon that the top 4 S14 teams would dominate the heiniken cup... (just a personal opinion no need for anyone to have a baby) ... also rugby is rugby and football/soccer is just that... and please do NOT put habana in the same class as cueto or sackey - no offence to them but habana is in a higher league

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 29, 2009 12:21 am

  • Super 14 - no away fans (and not many home fans), no money, no atmosphere, no competition. It might as well be christened the Crusaders and 13 others division.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 29, 2009 12:50 am

  • What? The crusaders aren't even in the top 4 this year, you ignorant joke of a human being.
Are you lot aware that the 14 teams in the S14 contain every single current Wallaby, All Black and Springbok?
That these are the same players that dominate international rugby?
That when Lote Tuqiri makes tackles for the Waratahs, he's using the same technique that he uses against France or England?
That when Nonu makes a break against the Blues, he's using the same power and stepping ability he uses against Wales or Ireland?
That when Habana intercepts, streaks down the field and palms off a Brumby, he's using the same ability that he uses to such effedct against Scotland or Itlay?
Or are you lot just retarded?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 29, 2009 1:41 am

  • i hope the tri nations is better than this snorefest of S14 rugby so far this season.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 29, 2009 2:02 am

  • "Super Rugby"

    13 seasons.

    Championship wins.
    Crusaders - 7
    Blues - 3
    Brumbies - 2
    Bulls - 1

    Thats:

    New Zealand - 10
    Australia - 2
    South Africa - 1

If Super rugby is SOOO representational of international rugby, surely New Zealand would have won a World Cup more than just once, 22 years ago? Or South African and Australian sides would have won more Super rugby titles?

International and Club/Provincial rugby is different, same as any other sports.

Southern hemisphere logic, the same as southern hemisphre music/film/currency.

This has got to be the most twisted, convaluted, idiotic, illogical statement ever written by anyone, ever, for any reason, anywhere, anytime.
    You sir, should not breed.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 29, 2009 7:36 am

  • It's like possibly the most well known fact in rugby that New Zealand are consistently the best rugby team internationally, as a result of their excellent domestic rugby, both provincially and at club level.
The whole reason that they are called chokers at world cup time is that, despite their obvious dominance, they have yet to repeat their success in the 87 World Cup.
I personally would rate them pretty strongly to repeat that success in 2011 though, because at home they are the biggest challenge in rugby.
And the fact that the S14 then produces the two countries which have gone on to win four of the remaining five world cups, as well as the currently ranked top three nations and current world cup holders, would suggest to anyone with a modicum of sense in their brain that the S14 produces the best players in rugby.
Of course sticking your head in the sand and hoping for better seems to be a past time of NH supporters, so good luck to them I guess.
