Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 10
As Round 11 of the Super 14 comes to an end, we look back at some of the best tries of last weekend’s action, with our weekly Super 14 Pick of the Week, this time for Round 10.The Blues brushed aside the Highlanders in the same match that produced the Jimmy Cowan red card that we featured earlier in the week. Isaia Toeava scored one of the Blue’s better tries on the night after a nice run from wing Rudi Wulf.
Jimmy Goperth, who was the victim of the Cowan hit, scored a great try himself as he spotted some space and dived over a pile of bodies to score a rather unique try.
The Brumbies and the Bulls played out a classic match in Canberra as the home side snuck home, with impressive flyhalf Christian Lealiifano scoring at the death.
Bryan Habana got himself another intercept try, but looked surprisingly sluggish as Brumbies wing Francis Fainifo caught up to him, but then received a hand in the face for his effort.
Lions wing Henno Mentz seems to have found the form that he had when playing with the Sharks a few years back, as he scored a hatrick against the Reds in Brisbane.
Mike Delaney beat a whole stack of hapless Cheetahs in Bloemfontein to score for the Chiefs, and in Durban the returning Richie McCaw scored for the Crusaders against the Sharks.
There were some nice tries all in all, as another weekend of Super 14 rugby had us entertained thoroughly. We’ll have this weekend’s POW up soon.

The McCaw try was nothing to write home about.
Lealifano chase was awesome, but Habana's palm just said "Not today bru!"
Pretty average tackling on display, everyone seeming to go high, and either failing to hold the man or getting handed off.

Why has habana lost so much pace? In 2007 he was lethal but i havent heard him do much since. Still knows how to score the odd try though.

The tackling style has changed due to how often players off-load in the tackle. If you go low and wrap tackle all day the players just dump-of to sullport creating a gap in the def. Check the Turner dump off to his lock as an example. Creat low wrap tackle - Try!

The high tackling to avoid the off load is somewhat excusable, but not on the Delaney try, you've got to take a man low that close to the line. Some fantastic offloads mine you!

Clearly he is not the fastest runner in the game as Fainifo caught up with him despite starting nearly 10 metres behind

You guys talk about the SH being dominant but the only team we (NH) really struggle against is the all blacks. I hate it when aussies claim SH to be amazing when they are an average team themselves.

So they're average, and yet they haven't been beaten at home by a NH side in six years. They also regularly beat NZ and SA and win the mojority of their away tests against NH opposition. So what do you base your idiotic theories on?

You can't compare league/cup competitions to international sides.
I know southern hemisphere people are thick but when will they realise that?

anyway back to the rugby... good to see habana score! he has bulked up and worked on other areas of his game - pace cant last forever but interceptions and big hits can. not sure if he should make it into the bok side with other guys like nokwe, mentz, ndungane tearing it up, but because of his experience, he ll be there against the lions. cant wait to see williams bounced

All habana had to seperate him from other wingers was pace, without that hes like any other average winger (Cueto, Sackey etc) Only there to run in tries but offer little else.

Look I understand that players in the NH don't know how to break tackles. I understand that you lot play a slower game with shit attacking play.
But if you really want to see terrible defending from players who are supposed to be the best in the NH, just watch Sivivatu's try set up by Umanga against the Lions in 2005. The apparetly infallible defence of the NH, torn to shreds as several players miss tackles, get side stepped or simple run over.

If Super rugby is SOOO representational of international rugby, surely New Zealand would have won a World Cup more than just once, 22 years ago? Or South African and Australian sides would have won more Super rugby titles?

It's like possibly the most well known fact in rugby that New Zealand are consistently the best rugby team internationally, as a result of their excellent domestic rugby, both provincially and at club level.
The whole reason that they are called chokers at world cup time is that, despite their obvious dominance, they have yet to repeat their success in the 87 World Cup.
I personally would rate them pretty strongly to repeat that success in 2011 though, because at home they are the biggest challenge in rugby.
And the fact that the S14 then produces the two countries which have gone on to win four of the remaining five world cups, as well as the currently ranked top three nations and current world cup holders, would suggest to anyone with a modicum of sense in their brain that the S14 produces the best players in rugby.
Of course sticking your head in the sand and hoping for better seems to be a past time of NH supporters, so good luck to them I guess.
