Matt Giteau - A tribute to an incredible flyhalf

Ahead of the Tri Nations match between the Springboks and the Wallabies in Cape Town on Saturday, we've got this really good video tribute to one of the players that will no doubt have a huge influence on the match.

Matt Giteau is to many, the worlds best flyhalf. While comparisons and opinions abound, there's no doubt that he's right up there with the likes of two of the best, Carter and Hernandez.

To some, he's better, as he possesses an amazing all round ability in that he has very few weaknesses. For a small man, he's able to mix it up with the best, and you actually forget how small he is when you consider that he's played in the centre, and held his own time after time.

With ball in hand, he's the ultimate playmaker, and his lethal stepping and running ability catches defenders off balance regularly. Kicking out of hand, he has pinpoint accuracy and his goal kicking has improved significantly over the years.

He's pretty much the complete player, and will be vital to the Wallabies chances throughout this years Tri Nations. His battle with man of the moment Morne Steyn will be fascinating to watch at Newlands on Saturday.

"He’s one of the best flyhalves in the world and it will be good to get to measure myself against him," Steyn said of Giteau.

  • Wilkos better! LOL

By Anonymous bennybunny, at August 07, 2009 3:10 pm

  • A magical player! :)

And that double dummy during the Baa-Baas game was superb!

He's done well to keep himself relatively injury free too.

By Anonymous Phil, at August 07, 2009 3:15 pm

  • still wears a scrum cap to play fly half though - pathetic

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2009 3:21 pm

  • You're calling him pathetic based on his preference of headgear?

I'm sure there are worse things out there.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2009 3:29 pm

  • Love dat man, best 10 around at the moment, the double dummy against the baa baa's was just pure class. Hope it's a good game this weekend!

By Anonymous Rocky, at August 07, 2009 3:35 pm

  • Wilko's better??? even thou he aint played a good game for England since WC07!

    Poster...please leave this discusion board

By Blogger Unknown, at August 07, 2009 3:56 pm

  • Best in the game at the moment, but Carter's out injured.
Hernandez? Not the same class, excellent player, but not half the playmaker.

By Anonymous Bill, at August 07, 2009 4:19 pm

  • One of the most naturally gifted rugby players on the planet. As an all-rounder, nobody gets near, but i would still rather have a fit Mr Wilkinson in a tense big game

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2009 4:20 pm

  • Not a fan of a 10 playing in headgear... but as long as it means we can't see his latest pony haircut I guess it's a good thing.

Great player (not the best 10!), looking forward to watching him orchestrating this young Aussie backline over the next couple of years

By Anonymous Hackney Griffin, at August 07, 2009 4:36 pm

  • Hes the best ten at the oment with carter not back properly yet and hernadez not playing as well as he used to. I still cant believe that there is still a hype over wilko, What good is a top class player if he cant play due to injury. Plus id say at this satage he defo has lost a bit of form compared to 07.
I would pick Guiteau over wilko any day.

By Anonymous ybr, at August 07, 2009 5:11 pm

  • I can't believe anyone would even start to think they have the slightest chance of making an argument for Giteau not being the best #10 in the world! Bloody hell... The man is practically the best all-rounder around! Instead of randomly throwing out has-been names like Carter and Wilkinson someone name a weakness of Giteaus... The man can do it all

By Anonymous Giteau = pure class, at August 07, 2009 5:52 pm

  • The best and most exciting 10 to watch!

By Anonymous Luke, at August 07, 2009 6:44 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2009 8:02 pm

  • Morne - man of the moment! Let's see what happens tomorrow

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2009 8:02 pm

  • 1-Giteau
    2-Carter
    3-Hernandez
    4-Jones
    ....
    ...
    .
    678-Donald

Haha cant stand him!! He sucks!!!

By Anonymous Crank, at August 07, 2009 8:10 pm

  • wilkinson would tie gitteau boot laces up !! this guy is a rugby genius !!

By Anonymous Deano!!, at August 07, 2009 9:27 pm

  • Did someone actually mention Morne Steyn as being better than Giteau? I haven't seen a huge amount of Dan Carter, but Matt Giteau is a far far better outhalf than anyone else I've seen. Except Ronan O'Gara of course. O'Gara's superior tackling gives him the edge.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at August 07, 2009 9:50 pm

  • "ROG's superior tackling" ...lol Kearney!

By Anonymous Brennie, at August 07, 2009 10:37 pm

  • kearney for tests
'o'gara's superior tackling gives him the edge'
    cheers mate needed that.

By Anonymous sam, at August 07, 2009 11:01 pm

  • he is the best 10/12 now, no question about it.

By Anonymous ArranR, at August 07, 2009 11:23 pm

  • Matt Giteau is way ahead of any other 10 in the world, where else do you find a 10 that runs, passes, kicks and tackles the way he does? Hate to say it but the best fly-half is down south right now

By Anonymous Ruaridh, at August 08, 2009 12:53 am

  • Kearney for Tests O'Gara is shocking lets be honest! u cant say hes the best 10 cos of his tactical kicking,or kicking in general,he couldnt break thru a wet tissue and his defence is horrible, and im irish! i agree tho that steyn is nowhere near the best, nor is he near giteau.and people have to stop comparing everyone to wilko as the best in the world.we mite as well compare every winger to lomu or campese!!

By Anonymous bod is GOD, at August 08, 2009 1:09 am

  • Giteau is one of, if not THE most intelligent 10 in the world. Carter may be able to break the line many times, but Giteau has the ability to think his way out of any situation and do whatever is necessary to win the match.

I've always thought of Giteau as the world's best 10. Morne is quality, but i would be surprised if his form lasts, i mean look at Ruan.

Matt Giteau, the world's best Fly Half, no question.

By Anonymous Chris M, at August 08, 2009 1:45 am

  • Crank sounds about right, especially with Donald. The man cant catch the ball for god sake.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 3:49 am

  • too bad he didn't have what was necessary to win the match against the AB's and will also lose to SA

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 8:11 am

  • Greaaaaaaaat !

By Anonymous Flow, at August 08, 2009 9:55 am

  • "ROG's superior tackling"

    HAHAHAHAHA. ahh. aha..aaaah...
thanks mate, i also needed that..
Certainly the best all round outside half there is, i mean the guy can just about do it all.

I agree with some about Johnny, you are only as good as your last game, and lets face it, its been a while =)

Carter, Giteau are the definitely the best. Stephen Jones is worth a mention, he doesn't do anything too flashy but he's also a very good 10...

Please, Please don't get me started on ROG.

By Anonymous David, at August 08, 2009 11:05 am

  • Morne Steyn has already done more meaningful things than Giteau ever has.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 11:39 am

  • oh come on dan parks is the best no.10 in the world!! Does anyone know anything about rugby on here

By Anonymous roddymac, at August 08, 2009 12:20 pm

  • n#10 do you care to justify that statement? Apart from goal kicking there's nothing that any other flyhalf is better at than gits. he's by far the best running 10, and is as good as anyone at playmaking.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 1:15 pm

  • roddymac makes a valid argument.

Parks and Giteau have won an equal amount of World Cups after all.

By Anonymous anonymous no.7, at August 08, 2009 1:57 pm

  • To those who don't get sarcasm, obviously, 'BOD is god', Kearney for tests was joking.

This is why rugby is the greatest sport in the world. How many people look at Giteau and think he's too small and so on (Imagine, for example American Footballers watching Giteau play). This modern obsession with size has to end. He is the best playmaker, most skillful, one of best tactical kickers and possibly the best tackling outhalf on the planet. To those who say Hernandez is the best are way off. Granted he has incredible skills, but honestly try and say he doesn't play for himself and I'll show you a liar. And it was only recently I realised how fast Giteau is aswell. It might've been against France or NZ where he cut through the defense and was gone like a sprinter. He's also fairly young too, 26 or so. Maybe in the long run his size may count against him, but, Out Halves are in their prime in late 20s, so best is yet to come.

Can't wait to see him play against Ireland in Croke Park. Hopefully I'll be there.

By Anonymous Huh!! the 3rd, at August 08, 2009 2:02 pm

  • Where did you get Henandez from?! he is no way near giteau or carter I rather say wilkinson, cause when he is fit not even giteau or carter can match up with wilko! But it sure is giteau carter and wilko that is the best flyhalfs in the world! No doubt!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 3:16 pm

  • What is the story with Wilko these days?? Is he still injured or is he playing but hasnt gotten back to his old form?

By Anonymous themull, at August 08, 2009 4:54 pm

  • Ironic after todays performance.

By Anonymous Dave, at August 08, 2009 7:07 pm

  • I missed the game can someone tell me the score and whether it was good or not?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 8:04 pm

  • 29-17 to the boks, but it wasn't an amazin match. Thought the aussies were trying silly tactics to spoil the game. 3 yellow cards to aus - should have been one red to giteau though - he will be cited & hopefully miss the rest of the 3n!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 8:52 pm

  • The boks put so much pressure on a team, that they force the mistakes and the other teams become frustrated because they know that it will be 3 points on the scoreboard!!! GO BOKKE - Lets win that game in perth, afterall you could call it a home game as there are So many ex-SA's out there...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 9:11 pm

  • This video was posted at just the write time: ahead aof a match where Giteau showed his best and worst. A yellow card and a try. Not bad for a day's work. Kicking was poor, I think he kicked two or three past the dead ball line. That hit on Du Preez might even result in a ban 'cause he clearly didn't have the ball although I doubt it was intentional.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 08, 2009 9:27 pm

  • i dont think he is that great he just runs sideways he never goes forward

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2009 3:08 am

  • A superb player and a unique fly-half. Currently the best number 10 in the world in my opinion, Wilkinson - finished, Carter - hasn't played for 6 months. Cool video!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2009 3:16 pm

  • wilko is going to toulon next season,so hopefully he'll stay injury-free and play well consistently.then, and only then, can the point about him being the best can be argued

By Anonymous Ireland for WC 2011!!!!!, at August 09, 2009 4:11 pm

  • Matt Giteau should not be representing Australia no matter how good he might be as a no10 - that deliberate elbow to the face of a worthy oponent deminishes the skill and guts of our team - he wasn't even looking for the ball, never mind competing for it! Make a new video called, "Matt Giteau - A requium for a flyhalf with great potential who stuffed it up with a complete lack of discipline"

By Anonymous RevKev, at August 09, 2009 5:41 pm

  • He shredded morne and about 2 others when he got he chance close to the line last sat. pitty about the W forwards not cutting the mustard.

John Smit cant scrum for anything.... milked the penelties so hard, in the refs ear... pathetic

By Anonymous Chris, syd Aust, at August 10, 2009 12:54 am

  • Why cant people just suck it up that he done a bad hit.. yeah it should be punished, but cmon really everyone knows he is still a class player. One bad hit doesn't make him any worse or better. He's not thrown his career away cause of that so dunno where people make up these things, burger must of doomed the world if we're relating sin binning to life.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 10, 2009 2:18 am

  • it's his choice to wear a headgear and i'm quite sure he would still kick all our asses with his tackles ;-)

might be my personal view, but i think he looks a wee bit like an ancient aztec warrior with that scrum cap :-D

By Anonymous opfazonk, at August 10, 2009 12:40 pm

  • much respect for giteau especially his versatility to play more than just fly-half. Never been a fan of his scrum cap though, they just shouldn't be worn by backs.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 10, 2009 11:42 pm

  • opfazonk,

We're all entitled to our opinions.

I think he looks like a man with an unhealthy love for hydrogen peroxide. That, or an Aussie version of Nick Nolte:

  • uh, Steven Jones.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 19, 2009 1:25 pm

  • Can I just ask why a large percentage of - what I would consider to be the world's best - No. 10's are majority left footed?

I mean, there's Johnny, Carter, Giteau, Montgomery (when he still played), and Hernandez (I think).

I just thought it was a bit weird and wondered whether any of you guys out there could help me out.
