Jerry Collins charge knocks out Dan Tuohy

We recently featured an interesting interview with Jerry Collins ahead of his time at the Ospreys in Wales. Collins was looking forward to the new challenge and change in lifestyle, after his time in the south of France.

Last weekend against Ulster, a match which the Ospreys lost 20-16, lock Dan Tuohy scored a great try for the winning side. The celebrations didn't last long though.

Shortly afterwards, Jerry 'The Terminator' Collins ended his match in no uncertain terms with a trademark charge that left Tuohy out cold after attempting to tackle the rampaging Kiwi.

Collins, being the good man that he is, went over immediately to check if Tuohy was okay.

Former All Black, and now Ospreys, teamate Marty Holah believes that in time, Collins will come into his own with the new club, and hopefully rekindle the form that he had when at the top of his game in New Zealand.

"I certainly felt sorry for the guy who was on the wrong end of his shoulder last weekend. He just copped it in his soft spot," said Holah.

"The more time Jerry spends with the boys, the more he will fit in.

"He's a bit unsure about our blitz defence, because he hasn't been involved in one before, but once he gets comfortable with it, it's a system that will suit him.

"He's a big hitter who likes to line up people and take them on confrontationally. When it clicks for him, he'll be right in there."

  • Poor tackling technique...

  • Just out of curiosity, is there a rule against the ball carrier leading with a shoulder?

I know there's one for the tackler, just wondering if a similar rule applies for the player on the other end.

As an aside, the camera man found something interesting at 2:27 :)

  • Re: the hair comment. Come on now. You got to love the hair. Shows he doesn't take himself too seriously and likes to have a bit of fun. Plus you see that crazy blond crop coming better harden up or get out of the way!

  • I thought it was funny when Alan Lewis says as Tuohy is being walked off, "Now there is a bit of blood there..." saying that it could be considered a legitemate blood substitution if Tuohy was seen fit to come back on.

  • Just DONT tackle with your face, thats what happens...

  • I hate boring ass commentators. When collins smashed into him they literally said nothing, maybe a few words for the next like 10-20 seconds. It's always these old farts in NH (excluding France) that produce such boring commentary, whereas down south it's normally lively and they don't often get the names of players mixed up. Another thing which I find horribly offensive. I can watch a game of a team I've either never watched before or watched very little and can still distinguish the players on the teams and not get their names wrong. Why is this such a problem with commentators nowadays? I saw in a clip on here I think just the other day when Bakkies scooped up that ball low on the ground and charged for the tryline the commentator was saying "and Spies picks up the loose ball..." UGH! Drives me nuts.

Great shoulder charge though, I think Jerry will fit in nicely to a welsh side.

lol TUOHY STOLE MY TACKLING TECHNIQUE!!!!

  • "whereas down south it's normally lively and they don't often get the names of players mixed up."

I'll agree that it's lively, but I watch a lot of both SH and NH games and it's usually a safe bet that a SH commentator will mix up players' names (if they know it at all) before a NH commentator does.

  • Hes easily our best player (of a terrible bunch) so far this season. His carries and tackles are outstanding & 2 tries in 3 games aint too bad.

  • "annoyed said..

..they don't often get the names of players mixed up .."

Are you freaking serious? I take it you didn't watch New Zealand v France where the NZ comms CONSTANTLY got Clerc/Heymans and Medard mixed up for the entire games!!

On top of that, Murray Mexted sounds like he's in an eternal coma and Hugh Bladen does a great impression of a South African Speak & Spell machine. "And. the. ball. goes. out. to. Habana. and. he. is. tackled."

    Take about one-eyed.

  • collins what a legend, pitty the commentry wasnt in welsh as they really do get animated, think in general spanish, french and welsh commentry is better as the commentators tend to get more excited!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 20, 2009 1:50 pm

  • Agree with 'pops'. I don't think 'annoyed' saw the NZ v Aus game the weekend. Also the Welsh teams home games always draw very little crowds and the commentators feed off good atmospheres.

NZ commentators continually couldn't distinguish between the hooker ( i ain't spelling his name), George Smith and Will Genia, and also the back 3.

On their own side it was between Muliaina and Toeava.

If you want to hear passionate NH commentating I suggest you find the Irish RTE clips of the Wales Ire GS decider where Tony Ward celebrated ROG's drop goal. Just ignore Ryle Nugent's over use of cliques 'magic' and 'would you believe it?'.

I think you can usually get english commentary by pushing the red button and picking english. Not sure though.

  • If Andy Powell could do the same, he'd be a legend. Instead, he seems like a poor man's imitation of the Pint O' Guiness.
