France beat the Springboks in Toulouse

France beat World Cup holders South Africa 20-13 in a physical yet scrappy match in front of a passionate home crowd in Toulouse.

The dire night for the Springboks started early on, with an absolutely appalling rendition of the national anthem, sung by a Paris based reggae singer who amused the crowd but angered the players.

It was clear from pretty early in the match that the Springboks struggled to cope with the dewy surface, coughing up possession more often than not. France dealt with it better, feeding off the Springbok mistakes.

The French forwards took it to the Boks up front, and not only won a few of the scrums, but seemed to get in their faces enough to throw them off their game.

"We were quite happy about it. For once, it's good to see that it's not their opponents who are bleeding, but them," said France prop Fabien Barcella.

"We felt they weren't expecting this level of combat from us. We're all very happy that we managed to take it to them.

“The South Africans are very tough physically, so it's a great honour to beat this remarkable South African team," Barcella said.

"It was very hard and it was a very tough scrap. But we're not going to stop now. ... It's not because we beat the South Africans that we're going to start acting like kings."

At the break South Africa led 13-10, following an opportunistic try from John Smit after a poor lineout throw in from French hooker William Servat.

In the second half France defended well and kept their discipline, giving away only one penalty, whereas it was South Africa who seemed to blown up on a regular basis by referee Wayne Barnes.

Julien Dupuy, despite a few misses, managed to kick four penalties, along with Vincent Clerc scoring a try. Morgan Parra also slotted a kick late in the game.

The Springboks, whose handling was of a poor standard throughout the match, aren’t making excuses for the loss.

"The French came out firing. Their intensity was very high and they got stuck into everything," Victor Matfield said. "Yes, it was wet out there, but it was wet for both sides. They definitely didn't spill as many balls as we did, so we will have to look at ourselves."

The South African cause wasn’t helped by playing the match with 14 men for 20 minutes. Ryan Kankowski and Morne Steyn were both yellow carded. Regarding the match on a whole, Steyn feels they need to make better use of possession.

"You have to use all the ball on the ground," Steyn said. "We will have to go back to the drawing board Monday and see where we can improve for the next two tests."

  • Well played France, you TOTALLY outplayed us! We were as pathetic as our national anthem on the night!! NO EXCUSES, NO BOK SIDE should play like that - SORT IT OUR BOKS, ESP THE SCRUM!!!

  • Well done France, you are only as good as your last game and we sucked! Even our best player Fourie Du Preez had a shocker!! Taking NOTHING away from the French - you guys were bril - RESPECT!

  • Thierry Dusautoir = legend

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 10:54 pm

  • So glad we won last night!!
How strong was that french front row? Barcella had one of the best games I ever witnessed from a prop. Dusautoir, Harinordoquy, Picamoles were also killers.
We should have won by 10-15 points if we hadn't missed some very easy kicks and if Kanko hadn't fouled to stop Marty's try.
I wish the boks all the best for the rest of the tour, they are still my favorite team after France!
Irish, ye be warned, some angry Afrikaners are coming!

  • Just an information about the "anthem incident" : don't complaint against us, the reggae singer had been chosen by... Sud African embassy, and no one else.

I really enjoyed the game and the way France chosed to play in a very physical way. Picamoles, Barcella and Dusautoir were incredible.

  • Kanko - must go!!! Well played France! I have great respect for your rugby nation, always have and you OWNED us on Fri!
Hope we can turn things around before we play ( my 2nd fav team) the irish, please get someone who can sing our national anthem is all I ask!!

  • I'm still so happy we won (maybe is it because I have 40,2°C of fever... Fuck H1N1...) Barcella was perfect, and Dusautoir is just the best player in the world !

  • Barcella best loosehead prop in the world at the moment.
immense game by France, for SA Brussow was the only really good player last night.

  • Brussow
    Dusautoir
IRB players of the year ?

  • Could any bok even catch the ball?? What the hell were we doing out there??? SOMETHING needs to change drastically!!
    WELL PLAYED TO THE FRENCH.

ABOUT THE ANTHEM - we are blaming, who ever is to blame for allowing that clown to sing our national anthem, surely he must have peformed before the game and someone must have authorise it to go ahead? Almost as shocking as the boks on the night!!!

Hopefully we'll make it 6-1 tomorrow.

  • Great to see a NH team do so well against the Champs. Well done to the he French - quality rugby, definately a massive threat for the 6 Nations.

Will be interesting to see how the Irish do.

  • To Happy Boy's comment - Props to France only. Wales, England and Ireland were supposed to win their games and they deserve kudos for doing so. However, Samoa? Argentina? Fiji? We're not talking cream of the SH crop here. Oh, and you forgot the Italy - NZ game.

France was awesome. Where were the Springboks? French rugby is looking pretty good. Their trip to the SH, and this beatdown of the Boks. Great work.

By Anonymous realrugby, at November 14, 2009 11:37 pm

  • RD, yes that reggae singer is Paris based, BUT YOU SHOULD ALSO NOTICE HE'S SOUTH AFRICAN, AND HAS BEEN CHOSEN BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSY TO SING THEIR ANTHEM!

By Anonymous rodofle, at November 14, 2009 11:43 pm

  • Fantastic, we outplayed and outclassed the Mighty Boks it was just fantastic rugby to watch, hope we can keep up this form and carry on for the next 2 tests. Lievremont is slowly building a great team. . Picamoles, Barcella and Dusautoir were just outstanding but the passion and hunger was there to see in all the Frenc players. Still on a high from that game.

  • france = 2011 world champs!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 11:53 pm

  • What a complete let down of a match. We've lost before and I've been able to say 'wow, great match', but this was messy imo, from both sides at times.

Annoying to see the Boks play so poorly with a slightly wet ball. Also annoying to see them persist with a tactic that clearly just wasn't working for them.

That clown singing the anthem summed up the night. Wherever he comes from - Durban or Paris - whoever chose him to sing messed up big time. See Schalk's face? It's a bit like the All Blacks performing the Haka prematch but being told they can't open their mouths. A real let down.

For me it's hard to say if the Springboks played terribly or the French brilliantly. The first bit is true, and the French certainly didn't play brilliantly, so I dont know. Perhaps they just did a Bok on the Boks, and dominated them so well physically that the mistakes were forced.

In a tight match, there were a few key moments for me though, that ultimately changed the outcome.
1 - Kanko (normally awesome) dropping that ball straight from the restart, allowing France to get the ball, build up, then score.
2 - JP Pieterson's foolish quick lineout throw in, which led to either a try or penalty (I cant remember), but it was vital at the time.

These little things can be the difference in tight, Test match rugby.

Congrats to the French though, great win for them. Not a big deal for me as a SA fan - it was bound to happen. Annoying yes, but only one way you can go when you're at the top. So no trainsmash, despite all the fuss that will ensue.

Long comment.. oh well. Once again - congrats and I'm happy for France, and for world rugby. Unfortunately nobody likes a Schumacher or an Armstrong..

  • Great "old" rugby game! Physical, tough, jounalists spoke about a war all the week long and this is what happened. I am quite disappointed with the Boks' game, I was expecting better moves, better physical impact... but also impressed by the French pack. Unfortunately, this was not a game for big runs and moves, but winning against the Boks is still a big satisfaction... but we need some confirmation from the French team to see if they can be one of the big teams.

  • NO EXCUSES GUYS DURR

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 12:34 am

  • Just to point out to the ususal people who slag off the Saffas. How are these comments gents. We take it on the chin and give respect where its due. We were outmuscled by France fair and square. CAnt blame the ref etc. At least we admit it when were outplayed unlike the sulky Lions and Wales. I couldnt believe Gatlands comments after NZ last week. Oh we should have been playing against 14 men et etc. Is that the only way they see themselves wnning? Against 14 men? Should be ashamed of themselves.

By Anonymous Jacques, at November 15, 2009 12:40 am

  • Brussow outplayed the whole French pack, must have made 10 turnovers all by himself, who knows how many tackles he made... 20+

The Boks weren't doing their up and under tactic with good chase, they were just doing awful long kicks that stayed in play.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 12:40 am

  • Great game as a neutral to watch....Probably second best international of the year, the Lions SA second test being number one IMO...

French physically out matched the Boks in both the tight and the loose encounters and that is what won them the game...They simply wore the Boks out with their massive hits and constant struggling at ruck time....

Dunno whether us (Ireland) will fare as good as France in two weeks because I dont think our pack has the ability to be as physical as the French were...And plus we got Aus to contend with first..

Congrats France and unlucky SA...You's still are the best IMO and will continue their dominance probaly through 2010 too...

By Anonymous themull, at November 15, 2009 12:42 am

  • Very difficult to do anything when you have that gawk looking ref blowing SA up every 2 minutes. French going over the top and around the side went unnoticed. Very similar to the Fiji QF where the ref allowed numerous islander style high tackles, throwing the ball forward, being offside and falling all over the ruck. IRB will do anything to screw with those "big mean racist dutch". Don't worry, we'll overcome the obstacles and be the first country to successfully defend the World Cup.

Quote at 12 and Kankowski at 8 destroyed a lot of the Boks' momentum. Johnson should have been 8 as he's actually a man and would have outmuscled the dirty French.

By Anonymous Joe, at November 15, 2009 12:42 am

  • Reason for all the Bok knock ons = Kankowski.

By Anonymous Vegas, at November 15, 2009 12:44 am

  • Phenomenal French effort. Destorying the Bok scrum left my mouth open in disbelief. I heard Italy destoryed the All Black scrum as well. Great to see the competition heat up in the NH.

Interesting tactics as both teams continuously kicked back and forth waiting for the other to make a mistake.

Also did Habanna kick a French player in the head while he was on the ground?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 12:47 am

  • Joe, never forget that you still can kiss Derek Bevan for the '95 world cup semi-final. But if you really want to talk about Friday ref :

"Bryan Habana was fortunate not to be disciplined for kicking Clerc on the ground after a penalty had been awarded for an infringement at the breakdown" (Sky Sports)

By Blogger Pitseleh, at November 15, 2009 12:54 am

  • So you can say brussow outplayed the whole french pack...even though SA lost (he played well dont get me wrong)

But when JW pretty much out plays everyone, and someone mentions he did well you all talk him down....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 1:02 am

  • Haha, anonymous, that national anthem did seem particularly bad.

Steyn seemed to have an off-night...never really looked comfortable and composed like he usually is. And Dupuy had a horrible start as well - his kicking at the beginning almost made Michalak look like a reliable kicker.

The Bokke seemed to give away a lot of penalties, too...dunno if it was ill-discipline, or, like some people have pointed out, just sloppy play due to the conditions. Either way, it had to have been a spirit killer...another thing, why is Habana such a hothead these days? He seems to always be looking for a confrontation after a whistle...I thought Matfield and Brussow gave pretty good performances and tried their best. Same with Smit.

It wasn't just the French forwards (Barcella, Dusautoir, et al.) that looked great, but the backs looked on fire, too. Heymans, Clerc, Medard, Traille are all very threatening runners.

    Well done France!

By Anonymous flapjack, at November 15, 2009 1:18 am

  • I'm also glad the referee wasn't French, or there would've been more cards, I imagine. They're a lot quicker to give them in France...I wonder if it's the crowd's influence, sometimes. Barnes did a pretty good job, actually....and I'm usually not a fan.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 1:20 am

  • Habana didn't kick anyone, look closer. The Frenchman pulled Habana's leg into him to try and get a yellow card. I've watched the replay over and over again.

    Habana burnt Clerc btw.

I'm still waiting on the highlights to be uploaded onto RD.com, but just what was the anthem like and how bad was it?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 4:35 am

  • "weren't everybody saying kanko should of always been picked ahead of spies as hes more reliable??"

    Uneducated Shark fans.

If Pete De Villiers was smart, he'd replace "Kanko" with Ashley Johnson for the rest of the tour. That way you have a talented number 8 and Jacobs doesn't have to start.

I like the French, mostly because their fanbase can't speak English and thus don't irritate online. Same goes for the Italians and Argentines.

By Anonymous The DJ, at November 15, 2009 4:41 am

  • No Smith, Spies, JDV or Frans Steyn, so this is the best possible Bok team:

    Smit, Bismark, Beast
    Matfield, Botha
Potgeiter (sp? I don't know how to spell complex dutch names), Brussow, Johnson
    Du Preez, Steyn
    Olivier, Fourie
    Habananana, JP, Kouchena

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 4:46 am

  • No idea why they don't use Terblanche at fullback. If you watch the S14 and Currie Cup, you'd see he's a magnificent fullback. Always in the right spot, always links up well with the backline and is a very reliable last line of defence. Cheetah's winger, Mapu will hopefully replace the underperforming JP Pieterson.

"yo DJ....it is mandatory for french to learn english in primary school.
maybe the dont irritate cause there not knobs shiners"

Compared to the other top rugby nations, there are very few French fans on english/mainstream sites. The ones that do speak up usually struggle with the english language and thus appear to be simpletons. For example, no english speaking person would know what "knobs shiners" are, so wouldn't take it as an insult.

    Viva la English resistance!

  • Splendid, DJ. Thanks for loving the French because we are illiterate. Are we supposed to love English speakers because most can't post on French, Spanish or Italian-speaking sites??? Man, you made my day. LoL!

Back to the game something really puzzled me. Seems that in addition to not being able to match the French physicality, the Boks got their tactics terribly wrong by kicking so many high-balls under fairly windy conditions. Especially since possession was mainly French. So running the ball as they did during some of the Tri-Nations games surely would have been better. Is it just me who found this approach pretty inappropriate?

By Anonymous Nico, at November 15, 2009 8:23 am

  • Splendid, DJ. Thanks for loving the French because we are illiterate. Are we supposed to love English speakers because most can't post on French, Spanish or Italian-speaking sites??? Man, you made my day. LoL!

Why on Earth would English speakers want to visit foreign sites? I could do without the exotic experience!

By Anonymous The DJ, at November 15, 2009 8:45 am

By Blogger sylvain, at November 15, 2009 10:58 am

  • Dude, DJ, you're not doing the English-speaking countries a favour by being a twat. So write something constructive. I don't know where you're from but all the SAs here have almost only complimented France, which is a first fro rugbydump. They're showing the example that rugby is about sportsmanship. And they were still under apartheid roughly 15 years ago, so do as they have, grow up, and respect people.

LOL and btw Clerc scored a try, habana didn't. Habana should be cited for that kick

By Blogger Oli, at November 15, 2009 12:19 pm

  • Well done to France, beat the Boks at their own physical game. Especially when they broke SA's scrum a couple of time, that was real ferocious.

Oh and Habana shouldnt be cited, the Frenchman who pulled his leg should be. Clever, but very unsportsmanlike and should be given a penalty just like Kankowski got. He knew what he was doing.

Oh and please don't change the commentary to English. I dont understand jack of it, but the French commentators are always so enthusiastic!

"You do realize many of the sites you visit are probably "foreign", as in not hosted in your country or by people from your country (after all, that's what "foreign" means...as an English speaker, shouldn't you know that?) Dun dun dunnnnn."

Yes! A perfect example of "lost in translation" (splendid film, by the way). If you take into account the context of my "incorrect" sentence, you'll see I mean "foreign language" sites. Oh, dun dun dun, indeed!

"Et pour Nico, le nombre de fois que j'ai vu des anglais ou des anglophones traiter les francais sur ce site c'est honteux, mais ca sert a rien de hijo del puta répondre. Beautiful sounding language... so soft and vibrant.

By Anonymous The DJ, at November 15, 2009 12:45 pm

  • Oli, Habana scored a record equaling 8 tries at the RWC and was the player of the year. Anyone can score a run in try though, so I don't see Clerc ever becoming a great like Habana is, sorry to say.

Springboks didn't use their tactics from the TN, no up and unders... instead pointless long kicks.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 12:47 pm

  • Creggs, build a bridge and get over it, sheesh... Kankowski is a runty version of Spies. Because of him and Bekker the Boks pretty much only had 6 forwards hitting the rucks and doing the physical work, I didn't even notice Kankowski being off when he was yellow carded, besides being down 7 in the scrum.

By Anonymous Joooza, at November 15, 2009 12:50 pm

  • Eh, habana was catching up to clerc SLOWLY, didn't burn him. clerc clearly slowed down when he saw that the ball was heading out. Though i don't deny habana was the faster man, clerc was always getting to the ball first.

  • I know people are going to accuse me of lying, but before the game I really thought France had a huge chance of winning that match. I mean you just have to look at French rugby as a whole at the moment. You have all these guys, young and old, on the form of their lives. Normally, when you stick a bunch of those guys together, as with the English, they just don't have the chemistry and end up not clicking. However, with the French it seems that they work together brilliantly, and it really paid off against the boks.

i'm french and i'm still hesitating between shame and crying laughing...

best part form far is at 1.10, when the guy is trying to reach hight tones...

also the two guys playing some djembe that no one ear hith funny hats are good.

still pretty ambitious to mix between reagge and martial music.

it would be really embarassing if france was to blame with taking the decision to make that happen.

  • I admire the Boks so much since they really are the best team in the world atm in my opinion, but seeing them losing a game in which their opponents really deserve the win like the french did in this case, I always feel proud over the win beating the boks since it's such a task.

  • france, well done. that was a great performance. we went in with the attitude that its just another game. no heart on our part but very impressive attitude from the french. this has been a great year for the boks but i think the boys are just tired. no excuses though. take this knock on the chin. salvage some pride out of the rest of the tour or get some good combinations for our team next year. well done again. - bokke fan

Picamoles french number 8 was awesome too, Burger gets destruct by him.

  • That hit by Chabal on Steyn is awesome!

By Anonymous rodofle, at November 15, 2009 6:36 pm

  • I think Pietersen dropped the ball, he was faking a throw and it left his hands. Always guessed it could happen in wet and windy conditions.

Also, Clerc scored 6 tries in '07 WC and played less games than Habana.

The reason SA didn't use 'up and unders' was because the wind was incredibly strong and swirling around.

Overall a better rugby weekend than last, this game and Ire/ Aus game were standouts. I think Brusseuw has a rival in Aus' David Pocock, what a game against Ire. Even though Ire played poorly, had Pocock not been there Ire would have won.

To 1 comment regarding Barnes reffing SA only, du Plessis could've been carded, and if Carter was suspended last week, when he didn't deserve it, so should dP. And both teams spent all game off side.

By Anonymous Huh!! the 3rd, at November 15, 2009 7:34 pm

  • Also, those NH fans claiming a great weekend for us, like 4-1-1 or something, Wales, Scotland and England were god awful. NZ will destroy Eng next week if they want to. Oh and Ireland A beat Tonga 48-19.

France and Ireland are the early favourites for 6N, with Fra edging it.

By Anonymous Huh!! the 3rd, at November 15, 2009 7:38 pm

  • @ No.7 (the real one!) haha.. I thought there was something weird about that comment.

  • Fabien Barcella whataguy! Minced the bok scrum like it was nobody's business!

also, baby-faced Yann David's hand-off on Burger in the buildup to the French try? That was sheer class.

I can't think of a single French player who had a poor game. Even the replacements were awesome.

As for SA though, you guys have a real gem in Brussow. That little guy's a demon.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 8:30 pm

  • No doubt the awful national anthem contributed to our loss. The guys seemed to be in shcok and we never recovered.....the French should be ashamed of this tactic.

    Orange man

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 9:18 pm

  • As a France fan it is humbling to see the graciousness of the Bok fans on this site. That is proper rugby knowledge and perspective - well done guys.

This was a titanic match which was all about physicality and whilst I'm really proud our boys fronted up (this was more impressive than Dunedin against a weak NZ side), it takes two teams to make a great test match, so well done Saffas as well.

South Africa need to vary their play more and need a plan B when things aren't going for them. The kicking game didn't work and physicality alone won't do it if the opposition match you at the breakdown. You don't want to become predictable like the worst team in the world (England).

Can't you read properly ? The singer had been chosen by South African embassy. But congratulations for this hilarious excuse.

By Blogger Pitseleh, at November 15, 2009 9:24 pm

  • Regardless of who recommended that clown to sing the national anthem, this was a test played in france and organized by the french so someone should not have let that happen!! ( I'm not even a bok fan and I feel that they were definately let down by the french, even the crowd were laughing - that is very disrespectful!!!) Anyone who has ever watched a rugby match knows that the game starts with the anthems and its a chance for the teams to get fired up and ready for the game, SA were really let down... THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN IN RUGBY!!
but well played to the french anyway.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 9:57 pm

  • Well played to the french, what was up with the boks though? They didn't seem to know what to do half the time, no no no - correction - ALL THE TIME!!!

Well played france, you are my second fav team after the boks of course!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 10:10 pm

  • All im thankful for is that he didn't sing the anthem at the RWC Final07!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 10:12 pm

  • Well at least the singer of our national anthem can hold his head up high because he was the best south african on the pitch that night!!! As far as im concerned it all went downhill from there....

By Anonymous BringFSteynback, at November 15, 2009 10:24 pm

  • OMG, I missed the anthem but just watched it on youtube - can't believe how bad it really was, and the look on burgers face at the end and the whole sa team looking over their shoulders to check out who the singer is - I thought they were gana go and flatten them. As a neutral I can't believe the boks didn't walk off the pitch, that was SO disresctful by the french, regardless of who proposed his name, surely the guy had to be screened to see if he can sing or not....real bad taste france!! And this to the world champs aswell, how awful!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 10:45 pm

  • Thierry Dusautoir is a Legend he sure as hell shows up for matches and his record as captian is terrific With Wins over (a weak) NZ side and now the Boks. Though That entire backrow is very note worthy!

By Anonymous UAC, at November 15, 2009 10:56 pm

  • Shit, just watched it as well, i think he also shouts: RASTA! at the end of the anthem....WTF???

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2009 11:04 pm

  • For all those still wondering what Piterson was doing with his throw-in, I've figured it out. The French player was standing less than 5 metres away from the sideline, so Pieterson tried to throw the ball at him, and if he hit him, he would have gotten a penalty, because you have to leave a gap of at least 5 metres for a throw-in. But the French player jumped out of the way and the ball didn't hit him, so it was play on.

That's a bit risky from Pieterson.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at November 15, 2009 11:35 pm

  • LOL, Normally people blame injuries for their team losing a match, or the ref being biased, or the other team cheating.......

.....not the boks....they blame the national anthem singer!!! LMFAO!

By Blogger jay, at November 16, 2009 3:16 pm

  • Yes france might need more regularity, but this isn't their only big/good win.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 16, 2009 3:57 pm

  • Two of my favorite teams on display.

Loved watching the Frence play. They won the point of contact when RSA had the ball. When FRA had the ball, the phase play from the forward was great to see -- offload after offload.

Has to be fun being a French forward.

Also quite humbling to see how the vaunted ZA scrum was pushed back by the French. And yes, there is yet another French Legend that goes by the name Thierry.

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at November 16, 2009 4:13 pm

  • ZA anthem: How much chutzpah did this guy have to actually gone through with the song? Couldn't a more humble guy say "hey I don't have the pipes for this", and respectfully declined the invite?

Goes to show how heavily produced music is these days.

There is no hiding when singing an anthem. There is no Cher / T-Pain voice box (stolen from Peter Frampton mind you).

Goes to show how special the Frenchman was, and how "special" Jenkins used to be for Wales.

"That hit by Chabal on Steyn is awesome!"

Funny, I was watching at home, and said how awesome Chabal is, My girlfriend said "does he DO anything?". And I said "well, he stole the last lineout from Matfield".

Not even a minute later, there was that wicked hit on Steyn.

    Long live the Caveman Chabal!

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at November 16, 2009 4:34 pm

  • cheyanqui,

IIRC, Chabal had a pretty good game stealing the ball at the breakdown as well. He also caused a few penalties for South African players holding on, so a very nice game on the whole. I think he might actually make it to 2011 coming off the bench if he keeps this form up. It's just a shame that he can't make it a full 60 minutes at the test level any more.

By Blogger Bobby Nations, at November 16, 2009 6:46 pm

  • Am I getting this wrong from the clip?

    Second14 - Forward pass blue ?
    S19 - Knock-on blue?
S25 - Green penalised for tackling around legs ?
    S1:22 - Green tackled by bkue 5 from off-side position ?
    S1:55 - Green Tackled without ball ?
S4:39 - Blue plays on ground then green same - why green yellow carded ?
S6:23 - Green loosehead scrums straight, blue loosehead turned in - penalty ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 16, 2009 11:38 pm

  • To anon above :

    "Second14 - Forward pass blue ?"
Flat pass, not forward. You may be under the impression it's forward because 9 blue gets tackled just afterward (> backward movement).

    "S19 - Knock-on blue?"
Come on, being a ref, would you have seen that ? This is a mess, I'm not even sure it's a knock-on after watching it 4 times from an above POV.

"S25 - Green penalised for tackling around legs ?"
Nope, green penalised for diving. Look at the ref.

    "S1:22 - Green tackled by bkue 5 from off-side position ?"
Ok right, he's off-side, you got a point there.

    "S1:55 - Green Tackled without ball ?"
You call that a tackle ? And another interpretation (as biased as yours) could be that he was diving for the ball too...

"S4:39 - Blue plays on ground then green same - why green yellow carded ?"
Blue plays the ball as long as the ruck isn't formed (that is, for like 1sec). As soon as he sees he's being challenged, he stops. Green plays the ball afterward, clearly trying to get it maliciously (or dumbly). The yellow might be due to repeted offense.

"S6:23 - Green loosehead scrums straight, blue loosehead turned in - penalty ?"
I must say I'm not that aware of scrum's laws, but I can see green tighthead collapsing with the rest of his first line. Continuity of what we saw until there (french scrum destroying its counterpart).
Still I'm no specialist, so I can't judge much on this one...

Come on, this is whining and you know it.

I never thought I'd see the day when a Bok scrum got so comprehensively manhandled.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2009 4:40 am

  • the IRB player of the year nominations are a fucking joke!

BOD and FDP deserve to be nominated, but the rest? Croft? Francois Steyn? Giteau? None of them have had a season that warrants being nominated for player of the year. Even McCaw had a fairly average season by his own high standards. Where's Matfield, Brussow and Jenkins? Where's Dusautoir!?!?

Nevetheless, I hope O'Driscoll wins it. He's been the world's best player this year imo.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2009 4:46 am

  • BOD has most certainly not been the best player.
Roberts was more dangerous on the Lions tour, Elsom was better for Leinster and it's not like his preformances for Irleand this year were even as good as he's done in the past. The difference was the players around him are also of a much better standard.
Don't get me wrong he's an inspirational player, a great leader and opne of the all time great centres, but in terms of playing ability, he's not half the player he used to be.
Brussow should be player of the year if we're talking nationally, perhaps Botha (though he won't get it cuz people hate enforcers), Matfield or Du Preez.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2009 5:38 am

  • gotta disagree with the anon above. I actually think BOD is in the best form he's ever been in this season. He may not have blistering pace like he used to, but he's still quite handy in attack and he's probably the best defensive centre in the world. Add to that his leadership qualities and he's a hell of a player.

As for Roberts' impact on the Lions tour, I think it can be argued that he benefitted hugely from playing with O'Driscoll outside him. They were a fine partnership and neither outshone the other.

I think his closest rival will be Fourie du Preez, who has been consistently excellent all year and is probably the most important player in the Springbok team alongside Matfield and Botha.

Like other people have mentioned though, the omission from the list of people like Matfield, Jenkins and Dusautoir in favor of guys like Croft and Steyn is mind-boggling.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2009 8:42 am

  • Francois Steyn and Tom Croft?

Jaysus, reminds me of last year when Mike Blair got nominated.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2009 8:46 am
