Record crowd for Harlequins vs Wasps classic
A record Guinness Premiership crowd turned out at Twickenham on Boxing Day to watch Wasps achieve a narrow 21-20 victory over rivals Harlequins.
An expectant crowd of 76,617 arrived for the match in the freezing cold, the day after Christmas. Who says rugby is in a bad state at the moment?
Those who did make the trip to the ground were treated to an excellent match as they watched a determined Wasps hold out against a Quins side that were looking to end on a high after a disappointing year.
Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson, regarded by many as the best number nine in England at the moment, dislocated his shoulder and looks set to miss the Six Nations.
He had some joy earlier in the match though, scoring a try to add to John Harts effort and the points kicked by both Danny Cipriani and Dave Walder.
Nick Evans kicked ten points for Harlequins, while another Test prospect at scrum-half, Danny Care, scored a second half try, as did wing David Strettle.
The late try by Strettle, and the subsequent conversion, kept them within one point, but Wasps held on for a great win in front of the massive crowd of supporters.

look at the quins player making little gate for danny care to score. Very funny, but i don't think that is legal, it's sort of blocking the would be tackler
By jente, at January 03, 2010 11:23 pm
quite nice but paris has audiences like this one at every regular game they play in the stade de france. why make such a fuss about this particular one?

I was rolling my eyes while looking at jenny's comment. I cant wait for her to stop spouting sh1t:)
By TheRealSlimShady, at January 04, 2010 10:32 am
Jenny = proof that the Super 14 is for women.
I'm not surprised though, the GP doesn't need a naked man running around the pitch before kick off (ala the Highlanders).
Why do people compare the Super 14 to domestic competitions too?
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 11:43 am
Was there... what a dire game of rugby.
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 12:04 pm

By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 12:11 pm
Bland rugby. The GP is boring and judging by the English national team, isn't producing many great players.

All Black Jack shears sheeps all day long
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 2:23 pm
It's a shame David Strettle is only good for running and stepping. He's bad at tackling, covering kicks (as this video showed), catching high kicks, kicking technically and reading the pitch. A talent wasted, if you asked me.
By Joost, at January 04, 2010 3:03 pm
Is it me or simpson was (not intentionally) hurt by Care... his principal challenger for the england No 9..?
that's pure coincidence
By Flooz, at January 04, 2010 3:32 pm
I think simpson was just stupid and hurt himself. the whole facemask/oxygen thing when he leaves the field smells like "dramaqueen"
By jente, at January 04, 2010 3:36 pm
ey! i write from spain! here the rugby is not very popular and it's very difficult to see matchs.
I write to know the name of two songs. One is when the wing of harlequins scores the last try, on the celebration of the public...
and the other one i have heared in the matchs of Scotland, when there is a try... the people move the hands dancing the song
it's difficult but if someone can help me... thanks! It looks like a good match at Twickenham. (sorry my english it's not very good...)
bye! and thanks!
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 3:55 pm

By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 6:39 pm
the Guinness premiership has to be the most boring and worst league in professional rugby
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 6:49 pm
if simpsons out for the 6nations give newcastle falcons mickey young a shot, he has dominated ever scrum half including simpson and is lightning fast ?
By geordie, at January 04, 2010 7:18 pm
all these southern hemisphere dudes talking about this game its december its cold and you carnt have a flowing game when the tempratures 0 degrees and had a few inches of rain the day before your rugby isnt the prettiest either i mean you all imbread ****
By Anonymous, at January 04, 2010 8:47 pm
^Yeah they're 'imbread', and untoast, and disloaf. Not inbred though.
By Kearney for tests, at January 04, 2010 9:51 pm
Yeah, calling people inbred, but then misspelling it and generally making your post sound like a retarded four year old chimpanzee wrote it, is not gonna convince many people of the point you're making.
I think the GP is boring as batshit (alot of people agree apparently - it's in the NH papers all the time, Lote Tuqiri thinks it's the blandest rugby he's ever seen).
There is some good stuff in the NH though, alot of the French and Celtic teams play or try to play the game properly (Leinster play a good brand, Toulouse and others).
By Anonymous, at January 05, 2010 12:28 am
True re Leinster and Toulouse:
Following on from that:
is there a GP team renowned for its flowing rugby?
By mise, at January 05, 2010 1:33 am
Hardly a classic
Big crowd though, but i guess thats all that matters in england is 'the numbers' and financial side, not the actual quality of rugby.
Seriously, its like watching paint dry.

Clearly those who thought the game was boring don't understand rugby. Great rugby is a chess match, gentlemen. I can't stand people with short attention spans.
Impressive crowd. The Southern Hemisphere should take note... you couldn't even draw that much during the international season.
By UK_andy, at January 05, 2010 1:58 pm

We don't care.

No, you mean in Britain the vast majority of fans are middle class - upper class.
Where as in NZ it's a working mans game.
That's the truth. You're not better fans, you're just toffs with alot of money to spare.

'No, you mean in Britain the vast majority of fans are middle class - upper class.'
You haven't got the faintest idea have you. Look at the Welsh game, look at the grass roots clubs such as Gloucester and Leicester and when you've finally pulled your head out of your arse and come up with a decent comment have another go.

I love how the southern hemisphere use our technology, with our language to talk about our sports.
They've contributed nothing to society, that's why they're so poor and the kids have plenty of time to do nothing but play games.

This is the sort of bigotry and classism you get from Northern Hemisphere union fans. And they wonder why NZ and Aus would rather watch the NRL.

I was there, it was a depressingly poor match made interesting because of a few tries late on that gave Quins a brief sniff of an undeserved victory.
By Anonymous, at January 06, 2010 5:43 pm
ledgend anonymous above SH we gave you rugby play our way or f*ck off to rugby leage
By Anonymous, at January 06, 2010 8:20 pm
rugby league is like watching a guy bat a ball against a wall 5 times before it's the walls turn to attack... extremely dull, rule driven tosh!
But I have to say I was at the London Irish v Saints game... now they are known for attacking rugby!
shame because I'm a wasps fan but we play bland the last two years, which is odd as our attacking options havent changed! doh!
By Anonymous, at January 06, 2010 8:47 pm
I must say,
I'm a diehard ospreys fan and wales fan but the NRL deserves more credit. The talent in that leagueis unbelievable.
2 crackin matches that spring to mind is the NRL Final 2008 Manly vs Melbourne and the recent Four Nations tournement NZ vs AUS both matches.
Its worth a chance if you want to check them out.

I agree with Vic. Jenny on 4th January 8:45 am started this whole NH vs SH shite. RD should get her ip address and ban her. Assuming that that's possible.
By Kearney for tests, at January 07, 2010 12:18 am
The GP is boring and poor rugby.
That's not anything about the NH. Just the English league.
it's why the English national team is so bad, the league they come from produces rubbish rugby.
By Anonymous, at January 07, 2010 12:37 am
I'd say half the gp players aren't english which is the main reason our national team is shite. The rugby is fantastic to watch. Last season anyway, this season has been pretty dire. Some of the best games i've ever seen have come from the gp or english teams in the heineken cup.
I think all this has got more to do with other peoples inferioirity complex as in they don't have anything else on us except sport. Well not even that, just rugby. Most of the time.
By Anonymous, at January 07, 2010 10:30 am

'ah look, its a video about something i dont think ill be interested in, i wont even click on it, or comment it...ah whats this a video i might be interested in, ill click on it and watch it.......yes it was ok, not my favourite but there was some good stuff in there, ill write a comment, "the video was good THANKYOU RD, but i think there is room for improvement!"'
or at least something civil, instead its, 'oh look there is a video on that convict prick quade cooper i hate him and ill just comment that all aussies are convicts and its no surprise that cooper was caught on the rob!'
or 'look its that stupid over the hill fat bastard BOD, he is passed it and should retire in shame....'
or words to those effects......a lot of you need to realise that whatever you think about the standard of rugby in the videos you watch, these guys are paid professionals, and they can play a hell of a lot better than you....

It's not about SH vs NH.
The fact is that the GP is boring and isn't good rugby.
Alot of people think so, like the Welsh coach or Lote Tuqiri, even the coach of the top team, Saracens, said the officiating is crazy and stupid and is ruining English rugby, not just as a spectacle but the players it produces.
Thsi is reflected at national team level.
Irish rugby is better, Welsh rugby too, French rugby.
English rugby is just rubbish at the moment.
