Andrew Trimble's brilliant individual try against Bath
Ulster's Andrew Trimble scored what is without a doubt one of the best individual tries of the season against Bath last weekend, contributing strongly towards his current Ireland aspirations.
The 25 year old Irish winger has played for his country only once in nearly two years, as a series of injuries and subsequent loss of form meant that other players stepped up to take centre stage as Ireland won the Grand Slam last season.
Trimble is now back to full fitness though, and a recent peak in form and resolve means that he’s aiming to get the nod for the upcoming Six Nations.
With winger Luke Fitzgerald out injured, a starting spot on the wing looks to be up for grabs, with Trimble in competition against Munster’s versatile back Keith Earls, and on form Leinster man Shane Horgan.
It’s been a tough few seasons for Trimble, who a few years back was a regular performer for Ireland. Injury changed his career drastically, but he’s stuck it out and is feeling strong again.
"Not having the power in my legs that I used to have was really giving me a hard time and I was really finding it difficult to impose my game in matches," Trimble says. "That's something that sort of snowballed a little bit into a lack of confidence.
"Last year, I got the hunger back and wanted to get myself sorted. I just realised how much it meant to me. I just wanted to put that hard work in and I was delighted that it is starting to pay off."
His try against Bath was sensational as he slalomed through the defence before putting on the afterburners to gas the cover.
"I made the initial break and then I looked to my left to Tom Court who, I'm embarrassed to say, was keeping up with me!
"He was screaming for the ball. I think maybe this time last year I would have given it to him but, as you say, the new confidence in my own ability, I just wanted to take the guy on and then it sort of opened up. Fortunately, I got the try," he said.
Regarding the upcoming Six Nations, he’s anxious about the team announcement.
"Somebody is going to be devastated when the team is announced on Tuesday. Shaggy (Horgan) is playing really well with Leinster and Earlsy is flying with Munster.
"I suppose it's nice to have the strength in depth, but we're all desperate to play. It's a great time, but I'll be a lot happier if my name is read out on Tuesday. I really want to get back on that scene as fast as I can," he said.

Excellent try - love the extra gear after the initial line break.
I really rate Trimble as a winger - great to see him back in the mix.
I would just shade him over Shane Horgan on a very, very tight call (although recalling a try for Leinster in the magners - against scarlets ? - from distance, he is in excellent nick as well).
Kind of hard to leave Earls out, so if it had to be two from three, with distinct regret, I might just plump for him and Trimble.

How slow are the defenders!?! Expect to see a lot of this in a couple of weeks time, boys!! REAL rugby starts!!

don't think he has the defensive solidity need'd to get into the irish team, great try though, nice to see ulster playing sexy rugby!

Great to see him back and scoring tries. It is very competitive in the Irish back line now, good to have the depth there, though Shaggy is getting on a bit.

pretty amazing pace

are you kidding that trimble isnt strong in defence???hes one of the bigest hitters in the ulster team
By Anonymous, at February 01, 2010 4:29 pm
Eoghan... Forgetting tommy Bowe there?

Fingers crossed the Ulster renaissance gathers pace next year - and great to see Trimble starting to fulfil his true potential. Amazing how he burns off the defence without seeming to try - his pace is very deceptive. Hopefully we'll see the Ulster boys in the quarter finals of the HC next year - they have been away too long.

Rubbish trimble is a pretty decent defensive player, it was him chasing a kick and wrappin up one of edinburgh players that led to one of ulster's tries a few weeks ago, out of the 3 earls is the best attacking player but he just doesnt have the defense.
Ireland will miss fitzgerald big time, horgan has been playing probably some of the best rugby of his career but I think he's had his time in a green shirt. Goin on form the Ireland team should be
1 Healy or go back to the experience of Horan
2 Flannery/Best injured or not they're the best 2 in ireland, give cronin a few years
3 Hayes (He could easily still start but Tom Court on the bench covers both sides of the scrum and he has been dominating anyone he's came up against in the scrums)
4 o'callaghan
5 o'connell (leo cullen bench best of what is now ireland's weakest area)
6 Ferris if he's fit
7 Wallace
8 Heaslip (o'brien covers both flanks and ferris and wallace can easily switch to 8)
9 O'Leary (Boss as back up, he's in great form and stringer was poor in the A game, reddan isnt anywhere near good enough at the minute.
10 Sexton/O'Gara depends who the opposition is
11 Earls/Trimble/Horgan
12 D'arcy i think has played his way back into the team, But wallace is still a sound option another poistion depending on the opposition.
13 Dont think it needs said lol
14 Bowe no competition for him
15 Kearney and nobody is close to taking the jersey off him

There's no way Tommy Bowe isn't on wing...you'd have to be crazy to leave him out. Good to see Ireland has a class selection of wingers, though - that was something that I was worried about last year, but look how many have stepped forward! Good stuff...
I guess the good thing about Earls is that if you really wanted him on your team, you could stick him in at back-up center or fullback, too.
By flapjack, at February 01, 2010 5:09 pm
Trimbles scored some savage tries this season. i know he can play centre but can he play at 12 which i see as a problem position?

By Chris Boy, at February 01, 2010 6:14 pm
yeah, except with you it's minus the whole professional part and international stage.
By Anonymous, at February 01, 2010 6:42 pm
What a fantastic try. Really, just wunderbar. But how crap is that pitch? It looks like a bad amateur-side pitch.
By Kearney for tests, at February 01, 2010 8:10 pm
Anonymous...woops nope not forgetting Bowe - I was talking squad-wise, as in I can see/presume two of the three of Trimble, Earls, Horgan being involved on the match day 22, and absolutely nailing down Tommy Bowe as a certain starter.
At this point I'd be shading Trimble and Earls over Horgan...but only just & with regret.
By Eoghan, at February 01, 2010 8:45 pm
as in reality Fitzgerald will probably be the first choice on that wing, in this 6N, Kidney can put someone like Horgan in there. IE he's not really building the position, he has his man.
Neither Earls nor horgan are exceptional in defense, trimble is nice and big, has pace and is the best of those 3 in defense.
But I think Kidney will actually go for earls on that wing for some reason. He hasn't played his way out of the side as of yet.
But yea, all 3 are playin well which is a good sign for Ireland.
(one last nit picking thing: I knoooow it was a good try, but technically he _shoul_d have moved the ball into his other arm to prevent a possible slapping of the ball at the last mo by a defender. Yes he made it, but think of the last 2 by BOD and D'Arcy: they turned their bodies to prevent the defender having any chance of slapping the ball away at the last mo. Coaches see these things - classic e.g. I've mentioned before: Monye for the Lions. Nit pick over!)

Mise - technically he _shoul_d have moved the ball into his other arm to prevent a possible slapping of the ball at the last mo by a defender
You are right - remember the time the brilliant BOD was trotting in a try for Leinster against Agen and the fantastic Rupeni Caucau etc. slapped it out of his hand as he went to ground it. Although BOD was off his game that day, he got sick on the pitch due to a stomach bug or something, and carried on...
By Mike, at February 01, 2010 9:03 pm
personnally i think that the back line will look like this...
10.sexton
11.trimble
12.earls
13.God...sorry BOD:P
14.Bowe
15.Kearney
because remember world cup 2011 is just around the corner...and this might be the last chance he gets to get young players into the team!!
By creggs08, at February 01, 2010 10:16 pm
1. Healy
2. Flannery/ Best
3. Hayes
4. O'Callaghan
5. O'Connell
6. Ferris if he's fit/ O'Brien if not
7. Wallace
8. Heaslip
9. O'Leary
10. Sexton
11. Earls
12. D'Arcy
13. O'Driscoll
14. Bowe
15. Kearney
Kidney will change as little as possible form his starting team against SA. It's how, from what I've seen with Munster, the guy works.
By mfsa7, at February 02, 2010 2:18 am
Very good try, good turn of pace on the guy.
The defending looked poor, but it usually does when a try is scored, so I'll refrain from doing the NH thing and dismissing a great display of skill with the predictable "terrible defense".
By Anonymous, at February 02, 2010 10:25 am
ireland sucks
By Anonymous, at February 02, 2010 1:20 pm
Mike if thats the same game you're refering to where BOD got sick and was off his game, he also scored 3 tries that day. Off his game alright.
If Shane Horgan at 31 makes the wing or bench ahead of Earls or Trimble I'll eat my hat. Someone suggests him at 11. Fact, He can only play 14 (at 12 he was a joke), which means moving Bowe to 11 where he has less impact. I'd even go
Earls 11
Bowe 12
BOD 13
Trimble 14
Kearney 15
Bowe and BOD are interchangable as both are 13s and the best passers and most intelligent in the backs.
Also Earls can defend (try saving tackle and turnover on de Villiers in Nov anyone), but he does make the wrong choices a lot, and if he puts a hit in watch out.
On the propping, Healy has played well, but Court is the form Loosehead, and best qualified scrummager. He needs to start or the ref (same as Munster v Northampton) will kill Ire.
Oh and loved this try and his one v Stade where he burned Gassnier from the 1/2way on a pitch twice as worse as this.

Trimble, ROG and McLaughlin in. Don't have full team yet. Sexton and Ferris injured.

Darren
this one is so vicious, you 3 couldn't see it coming:
How come I can't even see Chris Henry being cited once in your perfect team (not even on the bench!!) after all you promised me in the video about Grewcock?
just kidding of course ;-D
Marvellous try, and to me the best side of it isn't even the pace but the moment he shows the ball as if he wanted to pass it, thus making the defense wait as he carries on.
By Maximus, at February 02, 2010 9:29 pm
yeah nice one anon, i was clearly joking.
By Chris Boy, at February 03, 2010 12:26 am
No place for Horgan, glad to see Trimble before Earls.

Replacements : Rory Best, Tom Court, Leo Cullen, Sean O'Brien, Eoin Reddan, Paddy Wallace, Keith Earls.

Proper class try. However, he may well pick up knee trouble later in his career - look at how his knee whe he runs does not move up and down in a straight line, but moves in and out, a classic symptom of the muscules holding the kneecap in place being a little too weak.
By Anonymous, at February 03, 2010 12:51 am
Nice one maximus. He's good enough to be there (he's been named A captain v Scotland A), but he does have one of the most in form 8s in front of him. He has played 6 too, but Ire have enough of them at the minute.
By Huh!! the 3rd, at February 03, 2010 10:00 pm
he may have scored a great try...but very fortuitous, the defence was rubbish. his decision making was shocking, he should have thrown the ball out wide, there was a two man overlap.

^ Alan Hansen would be proud
