Leicester Tigers extend lead with win over London Irish

Lote Tuqiri played his last match for the Leicester Tigers in the Guinness Premiership this weekend as his side beat London Irish 35-19 in entertaining style at Welford Road, strengthening their grip on the top of the table.

Front rower Martin Castrogiovanni put in a man of the match performance as he scored a try and contributed to another. Alesana Tuilagi scored after just five minutes from quick hands, while Scott Hamilton scored following a great break from Tuqiri.

Castrogiovanni picked up an intercept try, almost unheard of for a prop, then sprinted away to score, while waving his hand triumphantly in the air.

Steffon Armitage scored a try for the visitors to get them back in it, and with a kicking duel between Toby Flood and Ryan Lamb, the Exiles got to within ten points at one stage.

George Chuter killed them off though with the winning try on sixty nine minutes.

Coach Richard Cokerill described Hamiltons try as the best of the season so far.

"It was the best try we've scored all season," Cockerill said.

"Calum Green, who's just 19 and with limited experience at this level, nicked the lineout on one side of the pitch, then we played the ball well to use the space across the pitch, Lote took it on and Scott finished very well."

Tuqiri is now heading back to Australia to play Rugby League with the Wests Tigers.

"I've really enjoyed my time in Leicester. They've been very good to me and the guys have been excellent in accepting me here and helping me to settle in England," he said.

"Leicester Tigers and the supporters have been terrific to me and my family. We wish the club every success in the future."

Italian prop Catrogiovanni was as amazed as everyone with his great intercept try.

"I ran more than 10 metres, I never do that in my life - that is like a wing running the full pitch! Opportunities to score do not come very often for a prop, so it is happy days!"

  • hahaha Castro sounds like Borat, "Happy times!". Great game, great to see two of my favourite players in Castro and Lote playing well too, Lote's run for that try was amazing. LI 13 may aswell have been a tackling dummy, peace out.

Anyone see the collision with Rudd and Tuqriri too? Both took a clash to the head and Tuqiri wanted more lol. Props to Rudd though he had a tough game.

Anyone know wtf was wrong with Flood? Crying like a baby for 20 mins AFTER he was subbed off? What's the story?

  • Flood took a blow to the head. Think it was a precaution to take him off.

Anyone see the tackle on Allen for the first try? looked a bit dodgy to me!

Didnt think lote still had that turn of pace in him.

  • Loll gotta love Castro....always seemed like a top notch bloke in any interview and always seems like a fair guy on the pitch too. Great skill with the passing in the first try, and his try was awesome. (yet embarrassing for london irish)

    ...and he can scrummage....

Great game really, no idea about flood, very odd though.....

Shame Tuqiri is heading back, his run showed his real skill, which hasnt been so obvious recently.

  • Hala'uifa (think that's right) was lucky to get only a yellow, horrible high tackle, castro must have a head on him look concrete.

Tuqiri looks like he'll do well goin back to league, anyone know the exact story behind him getting sacked by the ARU?

By Anonymous Flan, at March 09, 2010 7:47 pm

  • Must've been pretty bad to get sacked from Australia, I mean Quade Cooper tried out a side career as a thief and all he got was a haircut.

By Anonymous ed, at March 09, 2010 8:15 pm

  • Flan: i believe he was in breach of contract because he had a meeting with arl club to talk about a swap and aru just sacked him right then and there...

By Anonymous VictorSoCalRuggger, at March 09, 2010 8:27 pm

  • Cheers, Final straw then? I remember he got warned before for a few things. Something to do with a prank phonecall to one of the other waratahs players lol

  • Castrogiovanni is argentine. He was born raised and learnt rugby in Argentina. he has an Italian passport. If I am 68, and never left Great Britain, and the next day they give me a chinese passport, I will still be british.

  • It was a good game, although the 2nd half had patches which were more like a comedy of errors. Not only did Castro dash 10 yds, but george Chuter went over the whitewash too - front row heaven.

    What's your point?

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

At least he did get a haircut though, that grubby redneck mullet thing was ridiculous.....

But his grandfather was born in scicily......so you'd need a grandparent or someone to be from china....

Castro only started playing rugby at the age of 18....and he is 28 now.......10 years.....crazy really....

  • Wasn't Tuquiri banned for a while for smoking pot? Or was that the other Aussie RL convert winger - Wendell Sailor?

By Anonymous JH, at March 10, 2010 1:06 am

  • Sailor got banned for coke.

  • Well this was the last match I saw on Setanta before they discontinued their US service. I'll miss seeing rugby on television.

  • 2:14 - "Why, hello there pretty lady."

You gotta love it when the big front row boys score tries - good to see Castro enjoying it.

By Anonymous mafa, at March 10, 2010 2:27 am

  • Yes Crosser-

I too subscribed to Setatna through their broadband-internet. Now they say to go to fox soccer plus because they took the broadcast rights in the US. Anybody know about this? Does my Setanta subscription carry over, who to call etc......

By Anonymous YankeeRugger, at March 10, 2010 2:39 am

  • me too guys i was watching rugby on setanta-i.com and now the whole website is changed and i only have six nations, i think its fair to get a percentage refund because i renewed my service like 2 months ago, and when six nation is over i have now paid $170 or how much to watch a month and a half of rugby. not to happy.

  • I'm not sure Tuqiri is a very cool guy. That phone incident was when Tuqiri broadcasted a coach saying that one of Tuqiri's teammates didn't have the goods. The coach didn't know he was on speaker and it humiliated the teammate. I guess Tuqiri was trying to be funny in humiliating his co-worker.

  • Why does Castro play for Italy instead of his native Argentina? Castrogiavanni must be close to the best #3 in the world. Surely propping for Argentina is closer to his heart and more prestigious? It's not like Pat Noriega who went up to a better squad in Australia.

Ever heard of google....it produces all the answers.....

His granddad was from scicily, so he was eligible to play for Italy, and it was as he put it, a professional career move...or something like that.....apparently he has a big soft spot for italy and has always loved them, and his choice to move was based on his playing opportunities or something.....i read earlier so im trying to remember....but yeh search it and im sure you will find the answers....

Hmmm yeh Tuqiri doesnt sound too cool with his phone call thing....although thats not really the goods to sack a world class player....in all honesty it could be something like we will never hear, i mean he could have done something like sexual harassment or something (IM NOT SAYING HE DID!!!) and so it might be a hush hush, lets not draw attention, but your fired. kinda thing.....

Id imagine there is probably more money floating around for the italian rugby lot rather than the argie team....

  • Great acceleration by Tuqiri for that try, and a good finish by Hamilton.

The story of Tuqiri getting sacked IS totally hush hush, so I'm not sure how some would claim to know what happened when like, NOBODY does? It's a secret. If it is in fact true about that phonecall thing though.. what a ridiculous thing to ruin your career over. Very harsh.

  • Tuquri still has a lot of form, the Aussies (and leicester) will miss him. The impression I get from watching tuquri play is that he is a fairly no nonsense player and expects everyone on the team to work as hard as he does (just check hte look he gives the forwards after Irish's first try) and as a player on the pitch he has lives up to it. You know things aren;t that bad when your still skinning most players in open play after a career this long.

Rudd had a tough day at the office. The guy had a proper egg sized bruise on the top of his head at the end of the match. I think they'd tried to put him there to deal with Tuquri and Tuilagi and it wasn't that successful. He had a bit of stand off with Tuilagi at one point. It's just not a good idea, ask Horgan, Lamb etc.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 10, 2010 1:30 pm

  • "someone could tell me why it's a french referee for an English championship?"

Because he can? I don't know, who cares? Wayne Barnes reffed a 3N and an Air NZ Cup match last year, so maybe it's just part of the IRB wanting more exposure for the referees to different kinds of rugby.

  • Soft yellow, it was just a good hit.
What's with European refs penalising good shots.
    Soft.

By Anonymous Tom, at March 10, 2010 11:09 pm

  • My bro works for the minister for sport here in Sydney and meets with heads of rugby regularly.
The rumour on Tuqiri was that he brought back a young woman to the team hotel one night.
Not kosher, for a couple reasons, not least of which is that he is married with kids.

Shoulder charge to the head a 'good hit'?

Accidental or not, its foul play.

  • Haven't seen that sorta pacem from Tuqiri a long time... Shame he's going back to NRL!
