Quade Cooper's outrageous sidestep on Cory Jane

This is a quick clip that has been requested from this past weekend's Tri Nations game between the Wallabies and the All Blacks. It features Aussie flyhalf Quade Cooper showing his moves as he dances his way around Cory Jane.

Cooper, after having a brilliant season for the Queensland Reds in the Super 14, has been an integral part of the Wallabies plans for the tournament. He unfortunately sat out for a few weeks after a spear tackle though, so despite showing moments of magic, hasn't really set the stage alight like many had hoped he would.

In some ways, for the Wallabies, that's not a bad thing as he'll now know how much work he still needs to do ahead of a huge upcoming year. There's no doubting his talent and right now he's one of the most exciting players in the game. He also showed impressive maturity on the weekend with a few well placed kicks for the corner, and seems to be working hard on his defence.

Cooper, despite still only being 22 years old, has been around a while and although the razzle dazzle will always be there, his goals of achieving greatness will take some time in coming. His all round game seems to get better each time he plays and the maturity he's shown in recent times, both on field and off, will stand him in good stead.

While there was major speculation about him making the move to League, he recently announced an extension on his contract with the ARU that secures his services for at least until after the World Cup in New Zealand, his land of birth, next year.

While the NRL may well be in his future, for now we can enjoy moments like this one on against the AB's, where he made the fleet footed Cory Jane look like a pie munching front rower.

Nothing particularly outrageous about that.

That was a class sidestep, it was almost like watching me play on a saturday morning! Obviously Quaide Cooper has nothing on me...Oh and why have you brought Shane Williams into it? Their both class players...chill out all you nationalists!!!

Err what does it have to do with shane williams? Any decent fly half could of done that, cory jane read it all wrong.

To me this looks like the kind of thing Rob Kearney wants to do but messes up half through so that all he does is a silly goose step.

Seriously he's brilliant but it looks ridiculous when he does that.

That reminded me of an early Benji Marshall. Infact Quade reminds me of Benji Marshall in almost everything he does.

I know not everyone likes League but that's the best compliment I can give Quade. If you're familiar with Benji Marshall you'll appreciate the comparison.

I think what I like about Cooper is not that he can pull this off, but the fact that he's always bold enough to try something like this.

Giteau a fine player, no doubt about that, but Cooper just exudes more confidence and creativity and it's a joy to watch.

@CJ still the man, agreed it was a wicked step. Disagree with the DC comment. DC is equally elusive but with less showmanship. I think you need to revisit the 2005 lions tour when he really came into his own and was carving up. He also has the ball on a string to a greater extent so his chips come off more often than Quades.

When I first saw this step during the game I actually didn't think much of it. But after seeing the replay on RD now I see that this was an great step, where Jane (who is no slouch) didn't get anywhere near him.

Come on, I get that you're an OZ fan, but really...come on.

I think WelshOsprey is totally wrong in thinking there's nothing spectacular about Cooper's sidestep as it was highly entertaining and a great bit of skill from Cooper, but I disagree with you and I think there's a handful of backs who could make the same sort of step. Gio Aplon, Shane Williams, half a dozen kiwi backs, Cedric Heymans, Maxime Medard, etc. all love to do it.

But don't let that take anything away from Cooper's play here as I loved watching it (a bit begrudgingly, as I don't particularly care for the guy, but I can't but admit he's got loads of talent). And yeah, it was even more impressive since Cooper's a flyhalf and not many would attempt something like that.

It's momments like these that make me apreciate rugby. Great hits, freakishly fast big blokes, nice teamwork and occasionally you get the "oh my god" momment. Like in "oh my god, I didn't think it was possible"

@ Vibe yea in 2005 DC had all the tricks going, and like you said... Not as flashy, but obviously more effective.

No doubt DC is superior player, maybe this surgery he's having will help him get back 100% of his pace and footwork.

I see Quade kinda like King Carlos Spencer, amazing skills and often bizarre decision making... But it seems to pay off, and its awesome watching them craft their magic :-)

thats because both him and marshall grew up playing touch football in new zealand. go to any touch tournament in nz and youll see guys stepping like that.

Time will tell. If he sorts his head out, doesn't get injured, stays in union, learns team play, learns defense, he might someday get near Spencer's class. But look at the AB defense - Jayne could afford to over-commit and give Cooper the outside move because there was nowhere for Cooper to go one he got there. He was boxed in. He had to jag-step again, almost stop, and pass the ball away to the right to no avail, letting the AB's recover in defense. The skill is knowing when to use the talent. Cooper had time to look downfield, see it all setting up, where the defense was, where an attack could be formed, if at all -- but he didn't use that info. He just juked Jayne and then gave up the ball. That's not skill, that's showboating

i thought that was great.....pretty much the kind of steps you make in warm up touch rugby before a training session....generally outrageous with more often than not, no chance of pulling on off in a game....

He stepped a guy and made 20 metres, setting his team up with good ball in the middle of the park.
That's good play.
Cooper is a very, very good player.
No he's not the quality of DC, and he hasn't acheived what Spencer has, but he's fucking 22.
It's amazing how good he is for such a young player.
Just apreciatte a skilled player while you can, cuz he won't be in union much longer.

If he went to league he would be a huge tard. Toulon could pay him more in a year than Parra ever could. Quade knows this but if he bombs the world cup league will be his only option anyway.

Magic sidestep and bit of skill by Cooper. As Kenny alluded to earlier the Oz forwards are what is holding back this team.....Their backline is superb and I reckon if the forwards get a bit more sorted than they are real world-cup contenders (and I am a jealous England fan)

Almost as good as Andy Henderson's sidestep past Rico Gear a few years ago. Can't remember what year but it came in the same move where Sean Lamont nearly scored from his own tryline but Tana Umaga caught him just short. Was a class step for an otherwise average centre who usually just bashed forward!

He did not copy this from William Ryder. He grew up in Tokoroa and every second kid down those ways can step like that. Proof is Benji Marshall (if you watch league). And im australian.
