Quade Cooper's outrageous sidestep on Cory Jane

This is a quick clip that has been requested from this past weekend's Tri Nations game between the Wallabies and the All Blacks. It features Aussie flyhalf Quade Cooper showing his moves as he dances his way around Cory Jane.

Cooper, after having a brilliant season for the Queensland Reds in the Super 14, has been an integral part of the Wallabies plans for the tournament. He unfortunately sat out for a few weeks after a spear tackle though, so despite showing moments of magic, hasn't really set the stage alight like many had hoped he would.

In some ways, for the Wallabies, that's not a bad thing as he'll now know how much work he still needs to do ahead of a huge upcoming year. There's no doubting his talent and right now he's one of the most exciting players in the game. He also showed impressive maturity on the weekend with a few well placed kicks for the corner, and seems to be working hard on his defence.

Cooper, despite still only being 22 years old, has been around a while and although the razzle dazzle will always be there, his goals of achieving greatness will take some time in coming. His all round game seems to get better each time he plays and the maturity he's shown in recent times, both on field and off, will stand him in good stead.

While there was major speculation about him making the move to League, he recently announced an extension on his contract with the ARU that secures his services for at least until after the World Cup in New Zealand, his land of birth, next year.

While the NRL may well be in his future, for now we can enjoy moments like this one on against the AB's, where he made the fleet footed Cory Jane look like a pie munching front rower.

  • Nothing particularly outrageous about that.

  • I thought it was pretty good.

  • WelshOsprey... you're an idiot. I expect you'll have a come back ready saying your Shane does that week in week out, but don't, as it's not true and he doesn't do that against the All Blacks.

  • go home welshy, shane williams can eat his heart out. quade coopers got saturday night fever and its outrageous

  • That was a class sidestep, it was almost like watching me play on a saturday morning! Obviously Quaide Cooper has nothing on me...Oh and why have you brought Shane Williams into it? Their both class players...chill out all you nationalists!!!

  • Quade Cooper is great, but sometimes makes me think if he knows that rugby it's all about respect to your rival and your mates

By Anonymous Miquel, at September 13, 2010 10:27 pm

  • The best bit was that he looks like he dummied the ref, I'd say he did that on purpose haha..

By Anonymous ConnachtSupremo, at September 13, 2010 10:32 pm

  • Miquel.. what?! Yeah, he knows nothing about rugby, having played for the Reds for years and now playing for the wallabies. hmm.

Sensational step. I say this with respect to Quade, and of course to them, but he looks like a Fijian in that replay! Brilliant

By Anonymous Laz, at September 13, 2010 10:38 pm

  • CHUR, thats wot you call the MAORI BOY step!!! shame he never chased his dream and become AB's.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 13, 2010 10:58 pm

  • That is one extravagant side-step. Brilliant.

  • "WelshOsprey... you're an idiot. I expect you'll have a come back ready saying your Shane does that week in week out, but don't, as it's not true and he doesn't do that against the All Blacks."

Err what does it have to do with shane williams? Any decent fly half could of done that, cory jane read it all wrong.

By Anonymous WelshOsprey, at September 13, 2010 11:08 pm

  • To me this looks like the kind of thing Rob Kearney wants to do but messes up half through so that all he does is a silly goose step.

Seriously he's brilliant but it looks ridiculous when he does that.

By Anonymous third Centre, at September 13, 2010 11:45 pm

  • Welshosprey, you seem to know very little about rugby if you believe what your saying.
You honestly believe that "any decent flyhalf" could do that?
    Are you insane?
You think jsut any old flyhalf can side step an All black like that with ease?
    You are kidding aren't you?
    What are you smoking?
That was an awesome step, very, very few players could do that to Corey Jane, certainly no bloody Welshmen.

By Anonymous Bill, at September 14, 2010 12:58 am

  • That reminded me of an early Benji Marshall. Infact Quade reminds me of Benji Marshall in almost everything he does.

I know not everyone likes League but that's the best compliment I can give Quade. If you're familiar with Benji Marshall you'll appreciate the comparison.

By Anonymous Chris, at September 14, 2010 12:59 am

  • I think what I like about Cooper is not that he can pull this off, but the fact that he's always bold enough to try something like this.

Giteau a fine player, no doubt about that, but Cooper just exudes more confidence and creativity and it's a joy to watch.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 1:10 am

  • Take a deep breath bill and chill out, its just my opinion.

By Anonymous WelshOsprey, at September 14, 2010 1:15 am

  • Cooper is all class and Cory Jane is already one of the best wingers around with some serious wheels.... Anyone who reckons "any decent flyhalf could do that" is a true idiot.

I'm a proud Kiwi and iv never seen DC pull off that sorta step!

By Anonymous CJ still the man!, at September 14, 2010 1:29 am

  • boring

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 2:06 am

  • Any decent flyhalf could do that???
    WTF?
Almost no player in rugby could do that, that was incredible footwork, he completely wrongfooted one of the best wingers in world rugby.

By Anonymous Jono, at September 14, 2010 2:07 am

  • @CJ still the man, agreed it was a wicked step. Disagree with the DC comment. DC is equally elusive but with less showmanship. I think you need to revisit the 2005 lions tour when he really came into his own and was carving up. He also has the ball on a string to a greater extent so his chips come off more often than Quades.

By Anonymous Vibe, at September 14, 2010 2:30 am

  • Thanks for that RD

When I first saw this step during the game I actually didn't think much of it. But after seeing the replay on RD now I see that this was an great step, where Jane (who is no slouch) didn't get anywhere near him.

I hope he stays with union after the world cup

By Anonymous Craig, at September 14, 2010 2:30 am

  • Jono, weren't you the other day saying how a lot of SH players could've made the same catch John Smit made the other week? Now you're saying almost no one can make the same sort of step Cooper made?

Come on, I get that you're an OZ fan, but really...come on.

I think WelshOsprey is totally wrong in thinking there's nothing spectacular about Cooper's sidestep as it was highly entertaining and a great bit of skill from Cooper, but I disagree with you and I think there's a handful of backs who could make the same sort of step. Gio Aplon, Shane Williams, half a dozen kiwi backs, Cedric Heymans, Maxime Medard, etc. all love to do it.

But don't let that take anything away from Cooper's play here as I loved watching it (a bit begrudgingly, as I don't particularly care for the guy, but I can't but admit he's got loads of talent). And yeah, it was even more impressive since Cooper's a flyhalf and not many would attempt something like that.

By Anonymous falafel, at September 14, 2010 2:39 am

  • It's momments like these that make me apreciate rugby. Great hits, freakishly fast big blokes, nice teamwork and occasionally you get the "oh my god" momment. Like in "oh my god, I didn't think it was possible"

Great step, against a great opponent. This guy oozes flair, enough said

By Blogger Xavier, at September 14, 2010 2:42 am

  • falfel, yeah there are other players who could do that.
Not many though, not many at all.
And very few who have that kind of footwork also have the passing and kicking game Cooper has.

By Anonymous Jono, at September 14, 2010 2:47 am

  • the last time Quade pulled a sidestep like that,

it was against lady justice outside an Australian courthouse

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at September 14, 2010 3:07 am

  • Thats insane!!!
    but hes still a knob

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 3:22 am

Seriously good step and seriously people, chill out. Quade is good and Shane is good.

By Anonymous Gman, at September 14, 2010 3:34 am

  • That's a Tokoroa step!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 3:41 am

  • there are very few players who have the balls to even try to pull something like that. completely isolated, with a couple of defenders bearing down on him. utter confidence in his own ability. go on quade.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 3:45 am

  • And Cheyanqui puts in a solid effort. Though, to be fair, I'm just glad rugby hasn't gotten itself into the legal shitbath that is the NFL. Hopefully the buck stops with Quade Cooper for a while.

By Blogger hemizhori, at September 14, 2010 4:23 am

  • @ Vibe yea in 2005 DC had all the tricks going, and like you said... Not as flashy, but obviously more effective.

No doubt DC is superior player, maybe this surgery he's having will help him get back 100% of his pace and footwork.

I see Quade kinda like King Carlos Spencer, amazing skills and often bizarre decision making... But it seems to pay off, and its awesome watching them craft their magic :-)

  • William Ryder has insane steps

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 6:32 am

  • I'm not sure what I'm more impressed with. The step or shrugging off the first tackle after. Great clip

By Anonymous Farz, at September 14, 2010 6:56 am

  • thats because both him and marshall grew up playing touch football in new zealand. go to any touch tournament in nz and youll see guys stepping like that.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 7:04 am

  • it's who he did it against that's outrageous, and in the context of the game also. Love the commentary! "look at Tony Woodcock hoping like hell he'd pass the ball so he wouldn't have to confront that!"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 7:23 am

  • Time will tell. If he sorts his head out, doesn't get injured, stays in union, learns team play, learns defense, he might someday get near Spencer's class. But look at the AB defense - Jayne could afford to over-commit and give Cooper the outside move because there was nowhere for Cooper to go one he got there. He was boxed in. He had to jag-step again, almost stop, and pass the ball away to the right to no avail, letting the AB's recover in defense. The skill is knowing when to use the talent. Cooper had time to look downfield, see it all setting up, where the defense was, where an attack could be formed, if at all -- but he didn't use that info. He just juked Jayne and then gave up the ball. That's not skill, that's showboating

By Blogger Unknown, at September 14, 2010 8:04 am

  • "recent maturity shown on and off the field"

LOL please, this punks lucky he didnt have to go to jail recently

By Anonymous luke, at September 14, 2010 8:38 am

  • i thought that was great.....pretty much the kind of steps you make in warm up touch rugby before a training session....generally outrageous with more often than not, no chance of pulling on off in a game....

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at September 14, 2010 9:03 am

  • Not a bad step defo.
    But quade is overated.

Get in his face early doors and hes a choker.

    By Anonymous Jimmymc1, at September 14, 2010 9:19 am

  • Lance, what a load of bullshit.
He stepped a guy and made 20 metres, setting his team up with good ball in the middle of the park.
    That's good play.
Cooper is a very, very good player.
No he's not the quality of DC, and he hasn't acheived what Spencer has, but he's fucking 22.
It's amazing how good he is for such a young player.
Just apreciatte a skilled player while you can, cuz he won't be in union much longer.

By Anonymous Jono, at September 14, 2010 9:35 am

  • If he went to league he would be a huge tard. Toulon could pay him more in a year than Parra ever could. Quade knows this but if he bombs the world cup league will be his only option anyway.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 9:55 am

  • Did he learn those moves during his burglary career?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 10:20 am

  • It's a carefully honed skill that Coops has, usually he's side stepping into someones apartment in the middle of the night to swipe laptops.

  • what a talent; doesnt look like much at first till you see that its one of the best full backs in the world he made look like an idiot; Jack 4 comments in said it best;

"uade coopers got saturday night fever and its outrageous"

He will mature and learn that after that side step you pass quickly and not take it into contact.

    Id like to see carter o gara sexton wilikinson or any other fly half have the talent or balls to try or be able to do that;

best fly half going by a mile an a half; pity his pack cant keep up with him.

By Anonymous Kenny, at September 14, 2010 10:31 am

  • ummm carter already does stuff like that. He just doesn't look like a peacock while doing it..

By Anonymous Max, at September 14, 2010 11:18 am

  • Magic sidestep and bit of skill by Cooper. As Kenny alluded to earlier the Oz forwards are what is holding back this team.....Their backline is superb and I reckon if the forwards get a bit more sorted than they are real world-cup contenders (and I am a jealous England fan)

By Anonymous NiWiTa, at September 14, 2010 11:27 am

  • Nice step, to be fair....

Would love to see Adam Jones or Marco Castrogiovanni give that a go. That, my friends, would be worthy of a 'share'.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 14, 2010 3:43 pm

  • Almost as good as Andy Henderson's sidestep past Rico Gear a few years ago. Can't remember what year but it came in the same move where Sean Lamont nearly scored from his own tryline but Tana Umaga caught him just short. Was a class step for an otherwise average centre who usually just bashed forward!
