Play On the Movie - Official trailer

What a great time to be a rugby fan. Not only is coverage on television and online at an all time high, but the international rugby community is now being treated to yet another rugby movie. This one however, is a little different as it’s fully funded and made by rugby people, not Hollywood.

Play On is the story of a Scottish rugby star who fails to live up to his legendary father’s ideals and successes, both as a player and as a man. Keir Kilgour fails to grasp the ethos of the game as professionalism has a bad effect on the pampered young player and he lives in his fathers shadow.

He decides to leave his country and heads to the US in search of fame and fortune in the NFL. He fast becomes a small fish in a big pond, resulting in him playing amateur rugby with a group of regular guys in Kansas City. It’s there that he finds the true meaning of teamwork, loyalty, and courage - all the ideals rugby was built on.

He returns home with his new team as he attempts to regain the respect once afforded to him by his family and friends. In the end, Keir has to choose between his own ideals or those of his Scotland rugby legend father's.

Last year we saw the launch of Invictus, a big budget film that failed to connect with a lot of rugby fans. Another rugby movie, Forever Strong, was also somewhat of a flop as it’s clichéd storyline, combined with some less than convincing rugby action, meant that not everyone was convinced. Play On is different in that it’s written, produced, and funded by rugby players. It stays true to the sport while telling a great rugby story.

It will be launched exclusively online, another first. What that means is that users around the globe will be able to access the film easily and promptly. The goal is to get the rugby community behind the film, then have it transcend to other viewers, exposing them to the real reasons why we play and watch this wonderful team sport.

A viral campaign has begun and by backing the movie, Rugbydump hopes to make all site visitors aware of its upcoming release, which will be December of this year. Become a fan of the Play On Facebook page to keep up to date as well as watch other sneak previews, post your own pictures, and win great prizes.

The full movie will be launched at playonthemovie.com in the form of a paid for stream and/or download. By signing up to watch, you will be entered into a draw to win a trip to New Zealand in October next year, a special time on the rugby calendar. For the first time you can have a direct impact on the success of a rugby movie. Lets get behind it and spread the word.

Visit the official website at Playonthemovie.com for extra videos, photos, and special features. A draw will be held to select anyone who has posted a picture playing rugby on the site, and they will win a prize as incentive to populate the site. Become a fan on Facebook to stay updated on launch date and all other upcoming promotions. Play On.

  • Can't say it looks any better/more realistic than the other "rugby" films... Spotted the legend Gav Hastings though - no doubt I'll give it a go!

  • uh i love rugby as much as any other person on this forum.. but other than kicker, it is impossible to make it in the NFL with zero experience.. there are way too many elements involved in playing american football that can't be translated into rugby

tackling is probably the only thing you could use in both

By Anonymous bornagain, at October 04, 2010 4:10 am

  • sorry but this looks terrible, why do they have to do this...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 4:35 am

  • How hard can it be to make a decent rugby film? dear god

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 4:59 am

  • This movie sucks ass, really

By Anonymous Ricol, at October 04, 2010 5:12 am

  • It was entertaining movie and held my interest to the end. Some parts are a bit off. But overall it is a good film.

  • Looks shit. I wouldn't waste my time

  • ^ Because you have so many better things to do than try out watching a rare rugby movie? I wish I was as cool.

Instead, I'll give it a go. These things don't happen often so I'd be happy to see what its all about.

By Anonymous FrankyH, at October 04, 2010 7:08 am

  • Looks fucking LAME.

  • ^ Because you have so many better things to do than try out watching a rare rugby movie? I wish I was as cool.

    .........

I sure do. I really don't care one bit that it's about rugby. A good film is a good film, a bad one is a bad one.

This is clearly a bad film. I can say that confidently from the trailer alone.

And it seems everyone else agrees.

By Anonymous Chris, at October 04, 2010 8:13 am

  • This is gonna suck. The main actor can't act, and the plot predates the roman empire...

By Anonymous Coco, at October 04, 2010 8:24 am

  • It's a rugby movie - not an oscar hopeful.

Anyway how often do you see previews and the actual movie is totally different? I'm hoping that's the case for this, therefore reserving judgement till after I've seen it.

And no everyone else doesn't agree. Those who comment are generally smartarses. Those who think it looks okay probably just don't feel the need.

By Anonymous FrankyH, at October 04, 2010 8:31 am

  • Cheers mate, you're showing your class here. Everyone who thinks it looks shit is a smart arse. Ad hominem attacks, very nice.

As for trailers being deceptive, fair call, that happens alot. Alot of crap movies have awesome trailers. However, I've yet to see a good film with a crap trailer.

By Anonymous Chris, at October 04, 2010 8:42 am

  • This looks about as appealing as a urinal tract infection

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 8:44 am

  • looks like comedy... I bet it will be a fail maybe an epic one

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 9:02 am

  • Your first words were 'Looks shit' and I'm the one showing my class?

It's not about crap trailers or good ones, its about them being a little misleading. I've watched many movies that have been quite different to how they came across in the preview. On both ends of the scale.

I'm just not a fan of such harshly opinionated negativity based on a 2 minute clip. They've made the effort to make a film with a low budget. I for one will give them credit for that and give it a chance. You can do something else while you look forward to Sandra Bullock winning another oscar. :)

By Anonymous FrankyH, at October 04, 2010 9:24 am

  • Franky, your film looks rubbish. Get over it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 9:44 am

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 9:45 am

  • Not my film :) I just thought I'd be positive on a monday morning. Look where that got me!

By Anonymous FrankyH, at October 04, 2010 10:18 am

  • I'd like to say it looked promising, but it just doesn't. If it comes up on the telly I'll give it a shot.

By Anonymous secondfive, at October 04, 2010 10:40 am

  • The only decent rugby movie ever was Invictus.
lol if you want a laugh watch forever strong haha the acting wasnt bad but the plot was crap. the reason i find it funny is because theres a bunch of yanks trying to do the Haka, its actually quite embarrassing. This movie looks fairly similar.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 11:35 am

  • His sister is fit....worth watching

By Anonymous Andy, at October 04, 2010 11:43 am

  • It's so easy to make a decent looking trailer nowadays; even shite films have good bits to string together with a cool narrator for 2 minutes. This one can't even manage that...

By Blogger RedYeti, at October 04, 2010 11:47 am

  • Lol right Yeti, you know a films bad when the trailer sucks

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 11:53 am

  • "It will be exclusively launched online"
lol and it will fail miserably

By Anonymous WelshOsprey, at October 04, 2010 11:59 am

  • Kids are too retarded these days to watch a movie without oodles of CGI, storylines about blue robots from the planet Zorg coming down to destroy planet Earth in 3D.

It's a simple movie, about rugby, get a grip. "Chris" said he wouldn't waste his valuable time watching the movie, yet has plenty of time spare to a) watch the clip and b) post his spazzy comments on RD.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 12:29 pm

  • I'm sure the movie means well, but it doesn't look great.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 12:44 pm

  • jesus that looks terrible

By Anonymous ElTigre, at October 04, 2010 12:53 pm

  • Fair to say it's the American element that people are disliking here? Something about them making a movie about rugby that's a little sacrilegious.

Like Japan making a movie about cricket. Or England making a basketball movie. You get the idea.

Doesn't bother me. I'll watch it

By Anonymous WhyNot, at October 04, 2010 1:16 pm

  • On a similar note, has anyone else seen the film 'Invincible' featuring Mark Wahlberg? It's about the NFL and, in my opinion, is a fantastic movie. Anyone else like it?

By Anonymous Phil, at October 04, 2010 1:40 pm

  • is there any actor who know how to play rugby?? the 'bond' Daniel Craig is a rugby player i guess.

By Anonymous techik, at October 04, 2010 1:42 pm

  • (Aussie)Adam is/was a rugby player and a american football player from San Diego State University.

Whether or not the film is decent, I'm sure he will play his role well.

By Anonymous Nick Danger, at October 04, 2010 2:22 pm

  • That looked like a KCRFC jersey in the trailer! They shot this in Kansas City?

By Anonymous KCHomie, at October 04, 2010 2:26 pm

  • Would it kill you to read the description KCHomie? Your answer is there.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 2:39 pm

    ......

I enjoy the internet and the sound of my own voice, or the appearance of my own text, if you will.

What I don't enjoy is low budget D-Movies; with a bad script, bad acting, bad cinematography and bad direction.

Be honest with yourself for a second here. If this movie was about any other sport than Rugby, would you be defending it?

People don't like it because it looks naff. As it happens my favourite film is City of God, as cliched as that might be. Certainly it isn't a film filled with CGI and non-stop action.

By Anonymous Chris, at October 04, 2010 2:51 pm

  • trailer isn't promising, may wait for it to become free in some way??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 3:56 pm

  • On the topic of rugby movies, might be worth having a look at this, about the northern most rugby time in the world, apparently. Looks great anyway:

  • Oh dear god it looks horrible.

By Anonymous David, at October 04, 2010 6:11 pm

  • WTF do the Scots know about rugger... a "breakthrough" movie on rugby featuring a Scotsman... how bizarre! a bit like a movie about bobsleighs featuring Jamaicans... Though it seems this is no comedy...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 6:49 pm

  • This looks so cheesy it's unreal, a son trying to walk in his fathers footsteps, so he decides to take his American rugby friends to Scotland so he can achieve his dreams, I mean wtf?? Seriously why can't they make one decent rugby film? I don't get the world we live in....ha!

By Anonymous Ben, at October 04, 2010 7:42 pm

  • Rugby is a sport, not a religion. I would no sooner put my support behind this film than I would for a rugby based political candidate.

This trailer left a distinct taste of cheese in my mouth.

They fucked up Invictus, but the world will go one without a rugby movie.

By Anonymous Canadian content, at October 04, 2010 8:59 pm

  • this looks horrendous

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 10:09 pm

  • Oh dear...

By Anonymous Peter, at October 04, 2010 11:01 pm

  • Bit skeptical on this one, but it's going to be hard to make a rugby film that isn't cliched seeing as every possible sports film plot has been done already, might just give it a go anyways

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2010 11:51 pm

  • this movie jokeshop!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 05, 2010 12:00 am

  • Just in case if people didn't know, apparently Mickey Rourke is set to be Gareth Thomas.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 05, 2010 12:04 am

  • Always one anonymous Scots basher! Wonder where he's from! I'm guessing he's either English and so would know that the Scots know enough about rugby to prevent England winning at Murrayfield for the last 6 years, or an Aussie who still has a sour taste in his mouth from being taught another rugby lesson by the Scots last November! Grow up you xenaphobic idiot!

As for the film, it doesn't look great but i'll give it a go and refrain from any childish, neanderthalic 2 swear word "reviews"!

By Anonymous Believer, at October 05, 2010 12:18 am

  • Looks absolutely horrendous - crap acting, story etc

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 05, 2010 1:36 am

  • I think it looks fucking amazing. Great dialogue, great rugby footage, nice camera work this movie is gonna rock!

By Anonymous matthius, at October 05, 2010 12:40 pm

  • There isnt even a good soccer movie out therem except maybe "The Damned United" and that doesnt have much of the sport in it. In fact is there a good sport film out there that isnt about american sports?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 05, 2010 3:36 pm

  • Maybe Mean machine, buts that's more prison life/redemption than football based.

By Anonymous The Schpoople Master, at October 05, 2010 4:54 pm

  • It Looks Disgraceful

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 06, 2010 11:49 am

  • that looks like the worst film ever made.

    By Anonymous goodNumber10, at October 06, 2010 1:57 pm

  • Amateur hour. This looks unworthy of a theatrical release.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 06, 2010 6:27 pm

  • To all those detractors, it's nigh on impossible to make any sports film that isn't naff compared to the emotion and drama of the real thing... at least rugby is getting a higher profile.

Surprised there hasn't been more mention of Mickey Rourke gagging to play Alfie (Gareth Thomas) as the first professional rugby player to 'come out'. His hissy fit on the BBC about sources is going to be hilarious if it ever makes the big screen... Sly Stallone is apparently keen on the project as well... even with these big names, don't you think the movies going to be a bit crap!?
