Rhys Priestland and Stephen Jones' great tries against Perpignan

The Scarlets scored some fantastic tries as they beat 2009 Top 14 champions Perpignan 43-34 in a high scoring opening round Heineken Cup encounter at Parc y Scarlets. Rhys Priestland scored one of the tries of the season, with Stephen Jones also crossing for a great team try. Both of those are featured here.

It was a nine try thriller as both sides tossed the ball around with aplomb as Perpignan actually outscored Scarlets by five tries to four. The difference came in the form of flyhalf Jones though, who scored 28 points while Jerome Porical failed with a late effort that would have earned the visitors a second losing bonus point.

Fullback Rhys Priestland scored two tries, one of which was sensational as he started it by joining the line, then collected at the end following two superb flick passes from Morgan Stoddart and Regan King. One of the tries of the season no doubt.

Jones later crossed for the bonus point try which itself was another classic as Scarlets showed great continuity and patience in the build up before letting the ball do the work through the hands, resulting in Jones diving over for his 50th Scarlets try.

It was a great win for the Scarlets who have shown that they’re willing to toss it around and use their strength’s. Man of the Match was David Lyons off the back of the scrum who carried well all day. Two quality tries are what’s featured here below though. Hit play and enjoy. does anybody else think most french teams are going over the top with these extravagant and unattractive shirts ?? this coming from a frenchy

i mean what kinda shirt was that from perpignan, i know it's the blaugrana from FCB, ie south catalunya but the way they were patched up was atrocious

and for Toulon, the Rouge et Noir club, Red and Black, playing in blue?? wtf?

agen did it a couple of years ago playing in orange

imo teams should stop copying the parisian extravaganza and leave it to them as they do it best

because recently even UK teams have been copying, cardiff play in pink, munster away is black and lime, ospreys had gold lat year, purple this year ...

One of the best rugby games I've seen. It felt like 10 minutes. Some great stuff by both teams but I was especially pleased with the Scarlets' effort.

The Perpignan pod had retreated back beyond the 15m line. Therefore No7 is onside.

Seriously? Even if he comes from Perpignan's side as if he were about to link in a Perpignan maul?
I honestly didn't know you could do that. Seeing him running this way from this side (as if he were a Perpignan player) was just shocking.

The following tries are real beauties though. And yes, agreed, Perpignan jerseys are... well, let's say "unattractive"...

No, Turnbull (7) is fine - the pod is over the 15m line so the line out is over. No maul is formed, there's no tackle, it is open play - so there is no offside line and he can play the ball from any angle.
No infringement, play on = a cracking try.

fair play to him i was watching it in a pub and everybody shouted offside and then abuse at the ref for not noticing it. good knowelegde of the game to do that though

Not offside and he is free to make the tackle/rip the ball however he wants as no maul has been formed. Yep, great awareness and sleepy play from Perpignan. Entertaining display from Scarlets, great tries.

this match was a scandal!!!
like every years in the H-cup the referee had chose his team!!
Perpignan may boycot this competition. I don't known if is because of the IRB or something else but every years is the same thing!!
(remenber vs ospreys (tincu) or the year when the referee made a english kick again at the last min because "someone was screaming"...etc)

Are the French teams usually so good at running rugby? There was some quality stuff on there I thought I was watching the Reds or Crusaders!

great tries- good to see a northern hemisphere team playing with such confidence. #7 offside? I think he was. He crossed the 15m line before the ball puting him in an offside position.

It's a Welsh team, even as an American I know of their history of running rugby and that Turnbull is not offside.

It's pretty shocking how limited some of the posters knowledge of rugby is.

I think Scarlets were one man more at the lineout, so #7 was offside since the beginning. He should be placed at 10 meters with the backs.

Scarlets had 4 in the line and so did Perpignan. Josh Turnbull was the scrum half and perfectly entitled to be there.

Loved the plays - amazing hands.

I have to say that there were two MASSIVE misses from the ref - a HUGE 'offside' at the lineout (1st try) and a SUPREMELY obvious 'playing the ball on the ground' (Second try)

Still - great hands, lines of running and support.

Lots of really patronising comments from SH posters here. If conditions allow, there are plenty of teams in Europe who can play like the Harlem Globe Trotters, and there have been for years - Leinster, several French sides, the Welsh as seen here, and occasionally even an English team has a go.

John, there's no doubt that seeing a team throw the ball around like that, before contact and offloading in contact, is quite rare. It's about an attitude shift and confidence, and it's good to see.

Scarlets can't seem to find any big, solid second rows, haven't for years.

They've dealt with this by playing a fast off-loading game and moving big packs around.

When it works it's lovely but they suffer against the very top teams.

Yes Wales invented running rugby but never advanced with the SH teams who have perfected it now. But if this kind of stuff can be transferred into the national teams in the north then nothing will stop world Rugby.

It's nothing to do with "perfecting" running rugby, their defence hasn't always been great and they will always suffer with strength in depth due to the lack of players playing the game.
