The Kurtley Beale greatest try that never was

There’s been a fair share of negativity on here in the past couple of days due to some dirty play, so lets take a look at something good from the weekend as Kurtley Beale produced a moment of sheer genius against the Welsh. The Wallaby fullback didn’t complete the job, but it's remarkable that he even got close.

Beale has come into his own of late. Still only 21, it feels as though he’s been around for a very long time. He started his Super Rugby career with plenty of promise but failed to cement a regular, dominant position for himself at international level.

For the Waratahs he was thrown in at number ten at a young age and while it was clear he had incredible talent, something just wasn’t right. This season however, he’s found his feet at fullback for both the ‘Tahs and the Wallabies, thriving in the position.

He admitted he’s made a few lifestyle changes and now, thanks to his improved fitness and confidence, is the quickest in the Australian squad – along with flyer Rod Davies – and has managed to live up to that promise he showed at such an early age.

Of late there has been a few key moments for himself and his team. Against South Africa in the Tri Nations he kicked that sensational penalty from 50 out to win the game in Bloemfontein. Against the All Blacks in Hong Kong he was the one who beat two defenders as he returned the missed touch finder from Stephen Donald. Then against Wales this past weekend, he put in a fantastic Man of the Match performance.

The man is on fire, and its having a great effect on the others in the Wallaby squad. "It's infectious, any sort of positive vibe's infectious," said fellow back Drew Mitchell.

"I think he really found his feet at full-back towards the back end of the year with the Waratahs. With that came a lot of confidence and you can see it with the way he's playing now. He's playing with a lot of confidence and very instinctively but you love that. Everyone around him thrives off his enthusiasm," he added.

This moment of sheer brilliance against Wales was a fine example of what he’s capable of, and how important it is that players are given the freedom to back and express themselves.

"I turned to Quade during the Welsh Test.. the try that almost happened with Kurtley. You could only look at one another and laugh at how he came up with even just getting himself in the position to potentially come up with a try like that," Mitchell said.

"The boys have had a couple of little goes at him about why he didn't score the try and he's not too happy with himself because it probably would have gone down as one of the best ever."

  • i liked his little chip earlier in the game as well.

  • Bloody inconsiderate of James Hook to make that excellent tackle and deny the man a wonderful try.

  • What a great take - I dont think Philips knew what was going on.

Great recovery from Hook to thwart the try.

Beale will be a a force at 15 for Aus in the RWC next year - Seems to be improving game to game for them.

  • Beale at 10 wasn't that amazing (was it last year ?) but give him a bit of space and creativity is all around... will be a force for next year's WC ...

  • This guy is pure class!

I hope to see him in Florence against Italy... He will hurt, but it will be a pure show!

  • @ Von HAHAHAHA TOTALLY AGREED

  • He hasn't done it much at the international level, but watch most of the 'Tahs games this year in the Super 14 and you'll see that when Beale is on his own inside the opponents 22, he almost always put's it to foot and most of them came off. I have been waiting for him to do it for the wallabies!

  • Great bit of play - bad moustache! Have watched him grow better throughout the tri-nations. England better watch out and that said by an England supporter!

Wasn't he the one that slipped in a tri-nations game and ball bounced off his face when he was passed to? I know there is a specific name for this but can't remember...Anyhow good to see he has the confidence to recover from such mistakes..

  • if you're interested in more about Kurtley, check out the first half of this video- it's about his schoolboy years, indigenous scholarship and rugby at joeys... pretty interesting how he had hype around him even as a schoolboy when this was made...

  • Yeah, you actually need some skill to finish.

  • Thanks Will for that background clip -
It's awesome to see rugby being played like this, what an inspiration.

I just hope that Wales and every country for that matter wake up and realise you have be ambitious like this and score tries to win games.

  • I'm always impressed by how Australia in particular brings these guys through into the national team at such a young age. In the Irish set-up, you're a young player if you're 23, in the Aussie system, you had James O'Connor in there aged 17. I don't understand why we hold our players back so much compared to the Aussies - it's not like they are struggling in the back line, is it?

  • Penalty try?

14.2a) A player must not intentionally fall on or over a player with the ball who is lying on the ground

Hook's illegal action stopped what would have been a try otherwise.

Was he 'falling' on a player who was 'lying on the ground', or was he tackling a player who was moving over the try line?

    Looked like a tackle me.

  • Brilliant bit of skill!
Beale has been showing some amazing stuff during the Tri Nations as well...

In fact, the difference in skill and vision between Wales and Oz was baffling. Wales could hardly come up with anything and every time the Wallaby backs had the ball, they were making huge gains.

If you manage to lose a Test against a team with no scrum and a wonky line-out, then that's saying something!

(Hats off to Oz though, they played some good footy!)

Falcon, apparently. He recovered from that incident within four minutes to kick a last minute penalty and win the match.

  • @ Philip - Movember may be a good cause, but it has nothing to do with that monstrosity on Kurtley Beale's face. He always has it.

  • "Penalty try?

Beale wasn't lying, he was sliding / rolling.

  • His facial hair is the source of his power mate :)

  • He needs to shave that chester mustache.

  • Mike completely agree bout O'Connor and Beale. Lets not forget Mitchell and Giteau who've been around for years are still only 26/28 respectively. Remember also how poor these players were initially, but were given a chance to mature. In Ire that just wouldn't happen. Bowe lost 2 years of his Irish career for 1 (admittedly) shocking game for Ire (Fra '06), likewise how many times was Murphy dropped?

Agree about seeing Beale do this week in and out for 'tahs. Never ever coach this out of players. Its like the story of Campo in the '91 semi v Blacks. The coach said he'd drop anyone who ran diagonally across the pitch, so Campo did it and scored the try, magic.

Finally, bloody love Jonathan Davies' commentary to this and his awesome welsh accent.

  • Brilliant! Irrelevant what team they play for it makes watching rugby worth while. I'm looking forward to seeing how we (England) deal with the Aussie's! Should be a great game if we play sensible rugby!

By Anonymous Jimbo, at November 10, 2010 9:19 pm

  • Mike: The aussies have no domestic competition which I think is the reason why young guys get such an early opportunity at international level rugby.

By Anonymous Bok, at November 10, 2010 10:33 pm

  • I would have awarded the try just for the moustache.

By Anonymous Gman, at November 10, 2010 10:33 pm

  • Hey Sander, what do you mean wonky line out?
Australia has a good line out, their line out had no problems at all in this test, in fact they stole two throws of Wales and didn't lose a single throw.
The only contest Wales won in this game was the scrum.

By Anonymous Jono, at November 10, 2010 11:09 pm

  • Awesome stuff. The aussies have been pretty impressive lately and it will be fascinating to see how they cope with the hard english forwards. I think if the aussies backs keep improving, Mitchell, O'Connor and Beale could overcome the Jeff Wilson, Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen gang of the greatest back three ever to play together.

Any thoughts ahead of their game against England?

  • There has been a bit of talk on here abotu commentators of late.

Well, fair play to the Welsh commentator in this clip .They can be uber biased those welsh commentators, but this time, their bias was for pure skill.

Passion for pure rugby coming through.

By Anonymous Mise, at November 11, 2010 1:21 am

  • It's only the Welsh commentator that would applaud the defender more than the attacker...

    Bloody Welsh\

    -.-

  • "It's only the Welsh commentator that would applaud the defender more than the attacker..."

    Are you deaf or retarded?

Jonathan Davies was lauding Beale for the move, even after the footage contained within this short clip, you worthless deaf and dumb spasticated cunt.
