Saracens go out as Racing Metro win at Vicarage Road

By now you’ve probably already watched the now infamous Brendan Venter interview from the weekend. This is the Heineken Cup game that preceded the theatrics, as Racing Metro beat Saracens 24-12 at Vicarage Road.

It was the third straight defeat for Saracens, who now have no chance of qualifying for the quarter finals of the highly competitive tournament. The two sides will meet again on Friday night, this time in Paris, but it will be somewhat of a dead rubber unfortunately.

Things could have been different though if not for a few blunders and somewhat of an injury crisis. Venter, who kept mum to Sky Sports directly after the game, later heaped praise on some of the youngsters that have come through for the club.

"The Heineken Cup is a magnificent competition, one that gives you the chance to test yourselves against the very best in Europe. Once again we've witnessed how our young players have stepped up to the mark, a testament to many years of hard work by our academy staff," he said.

Since the game, Venter has been warned by the ERC over his future conduct in interviews.

"ERC would like to point out that it expects key representatives of clubs participating in its tournaments to engage with the media in a co-operative and respectful manner. It is therefore disappointed by Mr Venter's approach throughout the interview," a statement read.

"ERC has asked Saracens to confirm that Mr Venter will not adopt the same approach, or one in anyway similar, when giving media interviews before or after Friday's Heineken Cup Pool 3 game between Racing Metro 92 and Saracens."

Martin Gillingham, the man behind the mic for that interview, has since said that he had no idea what was going on. "You know how it goes, at the time you're listening but it doesn't sink in because of the adrenaline. I thought it was a bit strange, and when we stopped, I turned around and saw the dropped jaws. Then it sank in," the Sky Sports commentator said.

You can watch that interview here, and highlights from the match below.

Three cheers for Sireli Bobo. Very good. Very good.

  • sigh, all i can say is 'winning is important, we must try harder to win'....

....although, i cant think it was a lack of effort....

infact...ill have to think about this one....think very deeply..

  • lol this vid has to have been made by a Saracens fan, the racing tries are shown so quickly you cant even see what happens whereas the Sarries tries are shown on all the angles etc...
Thanks RD anyway that was a great game.
And Venter is a whiny b.... who thinks he's witty.

  • good to see Chabal at number 8 all the time now. best spot for him and his talents.

  • Or maybe he was just frustrated to the point of making silly comments, tehsniper. Nobody said you have to be witty to be a smartass...

  • ha nice one

  • I'm a bit unhappy with this post from RD...

Sincerely, i don't really care to read again something about this Mr Venter. He is dumb, sour loser, ok, good for him. But write 2 articles on him and his way to be rejected by ERC, it's too much for me.

Why don't you talk about the running rugby played by saracens players despite their defeat. I'm sure they'll be a good team with a bit more of experience.

Why don't you talk about the solid Racing Metro performance? This team will become certainly one of the big sides of european rugby, thx to mr berbizier.

    better to talk about rugby

to teshniper, i was thinkin exactly the same thing about the video. It's from sky should i recall u... :)

  • Agree with tehsniper and Flooz

There's a better version made by a Racing Metro fan

  • @Flooz: I understand u'r frustration and boredom with reading about the same topic, but, to be fair, to RD:
There was more and new info on Ventner, and it has implications for all post match interviews. As a topic, its in a way bigger than one match, whilst also being directly connected to this match.

E.g. 'ERC has asked Saracens to confirm that Mr Venter will not adopt the same approach, or one in anyway similar' - what does that mean?!?

What sort of hermeneutics professor will be drafted in to define how similar an approach is to that approach?

Sarcasm is dead. Long live Sarcasm. Really, No, really, I really mean it. Really, I do.

Oh come on. You knoow I reaaaalllly mean what I'm saying. Don't you?

  • I enjoyed the fact that Alain Rolland started speaking in French to Chabal but Chabal replied in English so eventually Rolland just gave in. The mystery caveman always has his way eh?

Quite an exciting game this one, still can't quite believe the own-goal assist for Racing's first try, if in doubt.... don't do what the Saracens player did.

  • Nice typo

By Anonymous Stubby, at December 16, 2010 8:18 am

  • Flooz you whiny little donkey f*cker, can RD do anything right? Everyone comment you write seems to be either a pointless comment with no meaning or some little gripe about something, RD is free, and whilst it remains free can you really bitch about it's content, seriously f'off......

By Anonymous Tommo, at December 16, 2010 10:38 am

  • can anyone explain what the sarries player was thinking when he threw the ball into the field of play to gift Racing a try?
    It beggars belief...

By Anonymous whatdidyousay, at December 16, 2010 10:52 am

  • Definetely needs the beginning of Bobo'd try as Wisniewski pass is just great!!

  • Tommo growp up and learn to pronounce a sentence without insults. but u seem clearly unable too

ps: a forum is a place where everybody can give his opinion.
i completly respect RD. A great job!
but when somethin annoy me, i say it.

sorry for u, if u like to be a sheep and approve to everyhin

a clap to RD even when i am not ok on everything, and it's very rare;)

Truly bizarre. Almost enough to make you wonder if they should check his recent bank transactions or have a rummage through his kit bag for brown envelopes!!!

  • Flooz. you of all people shouldnt be telling people how to write....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 16, 2010 8:37 pm

  • didn't mr venter have an opinion on the penalty given against racing which was clearly the wrong half-way in the vid.
instead of looking at the man in the middle have a look at yourself and your team. he is worse than a football manager, most will be glad to see him go

By Anonymous mat, at December 16, 2010 11:59 pm

  • Where are all of one-eyed-Venter's defenders on this post? You know, the ones who were licking his a*se on the other post. That he should be allowed to say what he wants because he's a Doctor, a wonderful coach and they all wanted to have his babies?

Not so obvious now on the post about how his team got humiliated at home (again) by a team that supposedly doesn't travel well.

Can't wait till next week when arse-chinned Venter and his mercenary team get humped in Paris

  • Bit of magic from Bombo, three cheers for Sireli Bombo...

By Anonymous Mike, at December 17, 2010 10:52 am

  • No rant or silly "protest" interviews from ar*sehole Venter this week. Oh, Saffacens won, funny that....
