Perpignan stay top with bonus point win over Scarlets

As we attempt to catch up with some of the better action from the weekend, these highlights are from a powerful Heineken Cup display by Perpignan as they beat Scarlets 37-5 at the Stade Aime Giral on Sunday.

There were some lovely tries scored as the Catalans made sure that Scarlets weren’t in with a chance of making the quarter finals as they scored five tries to one in front of their passionate fans. For the Welsh region, Scarlets’ Nigel Davies was disappointed to exit Europe like that.

"It was in our control but we didn't play well enough. We turned over too much ball and quality opposition like Perpignan will punish you. We knew coming here we would have to perform at the very top of our ability but we didn't perform on the day. But overall it was a positive campaign for us."

Their attention will now turn to the Magners League, where they lie second on the table.
"We have everything to play for in the Magners and have shown we can be resilient and bounce back after defeat," Davies added.

Perpignan did well to match Leicester’s performance, taking maximum points to stay top of the table in Pool 5. They will face Toulon at home, most likely in Barcelona.

  • "were they lie second on the table"

Should be 'where' I think :)

  • Also Perpignan outscored Scarlets 5 tries to 2, not 4

  • Thoughest front 8 of the Top 14????

    I think so.....

Curious whether they will fill 50,000 people in Barcelona.... I really hope so.

As for USAP vs Toulon : this should be quite physical....good luck to the referee :-)

    May be best win!!!!

  • Faudrait dire à Jérôme Calzalbou qu'il arrête de dire systématiquement "Ouais y'aura essai !" quand le mec est déjà dans l'embut est n'a plus qu'à applatir ! :D

  • 5 tries for perpignan if i'm correct RD ;)

Perpignan vs Toulon >> mediterranean derby, it will be passionate

That said, don't u find curious that there is never a TV broadcast of the quarters and semi drawings of the Hcup?
The only time it was shown on TV, it was last year. Before, never

    weird

By Anonymous Colombes, at January 25, 2011 7:53 pm

  • i said that because i've just heard the interview of Boudjellal Toulon president) saying that ERC had nothin to hide to french clubs, i found that quite silly and also hilarious :)

a good manner to do publicity around his club and motivate toulon fans

  • mermoz is a class act and should be starting for france with jauzion ahead of traille or beasteraud

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 25, 2011 8:08 pm

  • @ Anony....

Well he seems he is improving.

I believed he might but I have no idea about his quality as a outside center?

I believed he is an inside center....so I do not know about his complementarity with Jauzion

    Or am I wrong?

Ps: Bastareaud is not selected for the 6 nations (so far)

By Anonymous Flipje, at January 25, 2011 8:27 pm

  • hook could some damage in a team like that

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 25, 2011 9:24 pm

  • @ Flipje Yes Mermoz is an inside center, but Jauzion/Poitrenaud can be an outside center. It should be interresting to see their complementary...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 25, 2011 10:31 pm

  • NO WAY that Jauzion can play outside centre !
That might be the biggest problem with the French group for the 6 Nations, we have 2 great #12 and no good 13... I don't like Marty and I don't like Rougerie playing centre...
Poitrenaud sure can be a great 13 but I don't think Lievremont took him to play as a centre.
If I remember well he already tried to put on the field Jauzion at 12 and Mermoz at 13 and as far as I remember it didn't work out so well...

Wow - will be bloody impressive if he pulls that off!

Anyway, if the explorer career doesn't pan out as he'd hoped he could easily be a professional Jason Robinson lookalike!

  • On the try count pedantry - Scarletts' five point total score would suggest they only got over the line once, not twice...

I reckon RD bung these mistakes in deliberately just to check people are paying attention.......

By Anonymous Von, at January 26, 2011 9:41 am

  • RD, y u no give replays of the tries? :( Some of them really deserve a good second look

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 26, 2011 10:53 am

  • Talking about James Hook

I understand he just signed for USAP!!!!

Will he play as a fly-half?????
If so careful at the number 10 curse at Perpignan!!!!

More serioulsy, 1M pound for 3 year??? Curious who is financing his salary.....

Probably a good news for USAP, but still I am getting mixed feeling. On one side, about some of the Welsh club financial situation (heard about Cardiff is not renewing contract for M. Williams and T. Shanklin). And on the other side, I am scared the Top14 is slowly monopolising the interest above the French National Team....

Anyway, not a bad signing for sure

By Anonymous Flipje, at January 26, 2011 3:47 pm

  • I don't think he'll get paid that much. Anyway, Perpignan have been missing a solid 10 for years, so he could make a big difference and work well with Mermoz at 12.
