Tim Rodber big hit on Colin Charvis - Five Nations 1999

The RBS 6 Nations 2011 kicks off this week, with the first game on Friday night between Wales and England. Here is a short clip from a classic match back in 1999, that features a big hit from powerful England forward Tim Rodber.

This weekend the tournaments kicks off at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as the 2011 Championship could be an interesting gauge of what's to come later in the year. It will of course also be a great test of depth, as both England and Wales are suffering from a few injuries.

Back in 1999 the tournament was slightly different in that it was the Five Nations, with Italy not having joined yet. Everyone will remember how this particular game panned out, with Scott Gibbs scoring the winning try, but this tackle occurred a few minutes before that.

England's Tim Rodber, a mountain of a man, smashed Colin Charvis in what these days would probably be considered a yellow card, if not more. At the time, referee Andre Watson and his touch judge thought it was bad enough for a penalty, while the commentators, and perhaps those in the ground and watching at home, thought otherwise.

What it does go to show though is that even back then, twelve years ago, these type of tackles were controversial and opinions were mixed about the outcome of a decision. Whichever side you sit on, it was a big hit that rocked Charvis, so I'm sure some of you will enjoy seeing it.

I have seen worse shoulder charges so wouldnt think it warranted a yellow card.

However his right arm is almost behind his back at the point of contact so definitely illegal.

Great tackle, completely legal as you can see he is making every effort to use his arms. He catches Charvis off balance and it made it hard to wrap the arms.

That's fine! He was wrapping his arms around him, he just hit him so hard that he bounced away. Plus Charvis had shifted his balance (probably upon seeing that giant coming towards him) which made him go down faster but you can see his arms are wrapped around him. Terrible decision. Although watching it at full speed it did initially look like a shoulder charge, so the ref can be forgiven.

Big hit, especially for someone who should be pretty fatigued by now! Charvis was a tough player in his day i think he's been hit hard by pretty much a whos who of big forwards from over the years! :D

I absolutely loved seeing Rodber attempt to turn his back and walk away from the ref, only to be yanked back by Dallaglio. That's proper captaincy, teaching respect even at that level. Tackle was fine too, he had a handful of Charvis' shirt for christ's sake

charvis was off balance, so he bounced back something that made use of arms very hard! i guess rodber was unlucky... great tackle anyway!

Like every sensible commentator I'll say that that was obviously a completely legal hit... the impact saw Charvis bounce... Rodber has led with the shoulder but the arms are obviously wrapping... as pointed out he still had a handful of red shirt...

Great hit. Look forward to more of the same on Friday night.
Oh and RD.. as we're looking at cracking 6 Nations hits of old... How about Mickey Skinner's against France?

Only issue is that it was potentially a little high, rodbers shoulder makes contact with charvis a little high, maybe. Very marginal. Maybe a penalty, but never anything more.

Two things in this clip really shocked me...

- Is that John Cleese impersonator really Andre Watson??? Horrendous tache!

- Eddie Butler NOT being completely one-eyed in his commentary! Almost unthinkable to imagine him nowadays not criticising the England player, regardless of how he really feels about it!

wait a minute here i thought that leading with the shoulder was how your supposed to make a tackle. some of you seem to be suggesting that you should put yours arms out in front and hope for the best.
i know he didn't wrap his arms but it looked he couldn't because of the collision.

Also, have a look at the maul-surfing Rodber at 3:20-3:35 and the sneaky Welshman hauling him down "pulling him off".

I was 11 when I watched this. I cried. Now I can reconcile myself that it was just a bad decision that handed Wales the game. I have mixed feelings about Gibbs, hate him for what happened next but in a Lions shirt and bouncing off S. African props I consider him God like. That's rugby for you, dont you just love it?

I echo Morgans thoughts. Fabulous player and had the balls to run at Du Randt and back himself to bounce him. But broke our hearts when he scored that try. I also can now relax in the knowledge that it was all down to a pants decision : )

Charvis was running away from the tackler taking his balance away, great blindside tackle! Must of hurt, they always do.

Nothing but a shoulder charge!!

Look at the position of his right arm he set that shoulder for the hit.

The correct was to make a tackle (and safe for both players) is to use the part of the shoulder from the neck muscle to the shoulder. This bloke use the outside of his shoulder and the top of his arm. He cannot make a legal tackle from that position.

This is not a bounce off because of a big hit and can't get arms around (ala George Smith at his best.) It is a clear attempt to use the shoulder only.

And he gets no leniencey for using one hand to catch Jarvis jersey on the way down.

Dear God in heaven. It's bad enough when we get the Panto "That's wasn't a penalty/yellow/citing", "Oh yes it was", "Oh no it wasn't" immediately after the match. That was 12 years ago! 12 years!

Worse, we now have the addition of the "we wuz robbed" brigade. No you weren't, you lost, get over it ffs

whether anyone thinks this tackle was legal or not is somewhat irrelevant, the fact is that the hit broke Charvis' cheekbone, now try to argue that it was OK. England got their come uppance for it in the end anyway...

Don't think that was a penalty. It wasn't even a particularly big hit as Charvis was off-balance.
