Christophe Dominici trip on Jason Robinson - RWC 2003 Semi Final

Last weekend we saw Jon Davies trip Chris Ashton in the Six Nations opener. Accidental or not, there were subsequently a few trips down memory lane in the comments, with this incident from the 2003 World Cup coming up.

It was England against France at Stadium Australia, a game that England won 24-7 to head into the final to face the home side. Jonny Wilkinson guided them there with a top quality 24 points of his own, including 5 penalties and 3 drop goals. It obviously good preparation for what followed.

While France managed to score the only try of the game, the weather on the day wasn't great and definitely not conducive to running rugby. In the first half when England did have a decent chance, releasing the dangerous Jason Robinson out wide, it was chopped down instantly.

Christophe Dominici, France's lethal try scorer in the '99 World Cup, stuck a leg out to stop Robinson as he danced his way around him and found a little bit of space. The French wing was yellow carded for the offence, proving somewhat of a turning point in the game.

To add insult to injury, he never returned from the sin bin, as he'd done his leg in the process.

  • He got kicked in the back of the head right after, too.

  • The only way they could have stopped Robinson

  • With a trip like that and the faked injury after, Dominici could play for the French soccer team,

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2011 4:05 pm

  • The French have a habit of dirty play and feigning injury.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2011 4:08 pm

  • i remember this match,
it was onr of the sadest day of french rugby, and as often, against an english side.

english staff prayed for rainy conditions and it worked well ;) as wilko & co developed an ugly but fantastic forwards work (24 pts for wilko)
wasn't the day for france with 2 yellow cards (betsen had one)

    dominici yellow was fully deserved.
to stupid anon: he didn't fake, he hurt his knee on the action

  • dirty and feigning just like ur mum ?
About raising up the level of the comments as A WELSH GUY did the same thing last week-end.

Moreover, this dirty player made envious the whole world when he scored vs. the ABs a few years back ... not that Robinson (true genius btw)ever did that in a semi-final at least vs. the Abs ?

  • Please lets keep this discussion free of politics, foul language, and xenophobia.

    Thank you kindly.

  • 1:40 -- Billy Whizz's kneecap into Dominici

Doesn't excuse the foul play, but I think it excuses the limping.

  • Fucking ugly day for french rugby

  • I do remember this game too since it was the start of the downfall of Laporte game style....and management. Also, Michalack had a nightmare game.

England gave us a lesson of realism and their forward (once more) were fantastic. Johnny and Jason were great.

England won this World Cup by keeping to their original style, and building on the strength of their front row and Wilko of course. Sober (not to say boring), but deadly efficient. They had been quite some critics about England gameplay during this WC but on the other hand the 3 years following their win, they proved unbeatable and generated a great rugby to watch with a good balance back/forward.

Credit to them and also they show that SH teams were beatable....;-)

  • Dominici was a great player but there are two shameful things in his carrer:
    1) this trip. (yellow car and injury are both fair for this)
    2) the try he SHOULD HAVE scored, finding himself behind the posts, almost walking, ready to ground the ball but grounds it on his knee and whooops! Knock on. Can't remember the team he played against unfortunately and I can't find it on youtube either.

  • Well done Colombes and Flipje for your excellent comments. Some other posters on here should observe and follow your example.

By Anonymous Von, at February 11, 2011 7:20 pm

  • @Maximus - I vaguely remember that too. Wonderful moment. I think it was against England and must have been around 1999/2000 wasn't it??

By Anonymous Von, at February 11, 2011 7:23 pm

  • Nope, it was against Italy. They trounced them, so it had no effect on the match, but still, very embarassing.
Umaga and Cullen both had the same trick, but in S14.

  • "The French have a habit of dirty play and feigning injury."

How funny. I didn't notice such reactions when an English prop (I think it was Sheridan) hurt Skrela with a dirty and unpunished trip few years ago.

  • RD, as you wish to show ugly trips, could you please show Flannery's one against Palisson in last year's France vs Ireland match? That was awesome! Thank you.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2011 9:10 pm

  • To Maximus, I think it was against Italy in a 6N game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2011 9:10 pm

  • Yes it was vs Italy indeed

    @ Von

Cheers mate....this is still a Rugby blog. :-). Most of the comments are enjoyable to read.

Ps: still will never support England but does not mean for that I disrespect them....

  • England did what needed to be done, it may have been ridiculously boring and it put a lot of people off rugby but hey, they won what they needed to win.
Looking very good at the end of last year though, enterprising running rugby.

  • more like adding injury to insult given that he was unfit to continue.

    By Blogger SAM^2, at February 12, 2011 1:17 am

  • Yeah nasty trip that..

Oh and btw, I earn over 50k a year.
I'm an accountant. In 8 years time I'll be 33 and earn a 6 figure salary. I'm not too bothered what you guys think though.

By Anonymous Vin, at February 12, 2011 1:30 am

  • Typical, every fan here is not a French friend. This is happening many years ago, but yet it is being posted today as if to insult the French name. Also we seen the Wales trip and there is no card. Yet we have a French games and there is many cards.

  • Hello,
All teams can have this kind of weakness. I 'd rather remember the powerfull and opportunistic try by Betsen.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAlF410ySsU&NR=1

The rest for France went terribly wrong :)
    Cheers.

  • I'm french and I have to say this is a bloody disgrace to rugby .

Besides that, we know all players make silly moves now and then, too.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2011 1:17 pm

  • Bad gesture indeed.

Oh and by the way, I'm 27 and don't give a crap how much you make a year and what it has to do with dominici, robinson or clive woodward looking like prince albert.

In 8 years time, I think it still going to be the same. I'm not too bothered how much you will make though.

By Anonymous vile, at February 12, 2011 1:19 pm

  • @ Anonymous, the Flannery trip is included in the related posts, under the video.

By Blogger GMC, at February 12, 2011 1:40 pm

  • @ Filipje, jorge, Von & anon
Thanks for giving info about Dominici's blooper.

Concerning Betsen, the only try I remember him score is the try he was once awarded whereas he was knocked out and simply was lucky enough to fall on the ball behind England (I think?) tryline!
(i know this is off topic but not as much as telling you how much i earn a year, so...)

By Anonymous Maximus, at February 12, 2011 2:26 pm

  • LOOOOOOL you guys CANNOT help ending blaming the French whenever any other team shows a lack of fair play...whatever, you guys KNOW that H Cup would be nothing if our French Teams stopped playing it (which I would LOVE! maybe that way you guys would stop harassing us all the time)

Shame on you Rugbydump...shame on you!

  • Adding 'insult to injury'? Surely it should be adding injury to insult!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2011 7:08 pm

  • he runs beautifully

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2011 7:13 pm

  • Im pretty sure that wasn't vin commenting. I read the other thread with the AB's and If you read the thread he was commenteing on (lengthily *rollseyes*) it was all in reply to a comment on economy etc and so was more a reply to someones comment.

I wonder if Johnson will tear Chris Ashton a new one for his dives today?

By Anonymous Sammy, at February 12, 2011 8:51 pm

  • The French are also responsible for global warming and the extinction of the Dinosaurs.
