Sean Lamont's try saving tackle on Jamie Roberts

Earlier in the week we had a look at Jonny Wilkinson's try saving hit in the Six Nations. This was another stand out from the weekend, as Sean Lamont of Scotland had a blinder against Wales.

In what was a poor game of rugby for the viewer at home, Lamont came on for Scotland when Hugo Southwell went off with that nasty knock to his face from the boot of Lee Byrne.

While Scotland struggled to get their game together - at one stage unable to score a try against Wales' thirteen men - Lamont showed his commitment with determined runs and this great try saving tackle on Jamie Roberts. He has since called for his team mates to shape up or ship out.

"It was abysmal -- the boys need to go away and have a look at themselves," said Lamont.

"I'm sick of it -- I want to win something, I really do. We need to have a closed-door session and we need to look at each other and say: 'Guys, if you don't want it, don't be here. Somebody else will fill in.'

"I'm sick of having this year after year, valiant losers or whatever. We need to pull our fingers out, there's been too many years gone by where we've been also-rans. It's not good enough."

Shouldn't roberts have been penalised for trying to get up when tackled?

Fantastic tackle. It's really tough to pull off a tackle from behind like that but that was perfectly executed. Shame the Scots don't seem able to really offer anything at the other end of the field these days...

I know it's a great tackle but i think Jamie Roberts was a bit naive. He should have gone to his left and to his right instead of going straight, it made it easier for Lamont. But at the end of the day, it's a great tackle that prevented a try

Rory Lamont was the only good thing about the scottish side and the only person who injected any excitment into the game

Two things:
-penalty two Wales and a subsequent citing for Lamont as it was a no armed (all hands) tackle.
-if the referee deemed it legal then Roberts should have been penalised for getting back to his feet after being held, players are getting away with this all the time at the moment.

Cracking tackle, should have been a penalty to the Scots too - ball carrying arm on the deck means tackle was complete?

IIRC, Jonathan Davies (commentating) did actually mention that the second motion by Roberts should have been penalised.

Also, an interesting thought: did it give Roberts an unfair advantage to have the big screen, in which he could see Lamont closing on him?

Well if he did see Lamont behind him on the screen he should have tried to swerve a bit. Admittedly Roberts is a slightly more experienced player than I am, but why did he not use his loaf a bit instead of giving Lamont such a *relatively* easy target to tackle?

It's a perfectly legal tackle, similar to one of the drag tackles that are often featured here (in terms of using the hands). Plus you can see that he uses his forearm to complete the tackle, wrapping Roberts' leg to trip him up.

No arguments on the fact that Roberts should've been penalised for trying to get to his feet though.

.....are you really asking that?!?.... Obviously no advantage...he was tackled and didn't score...

I argued the point about a penalty with my brother, who's a ref. He said that Lamont didn't release so a penalty could have gone either way. When I asked what he would have penalised, though, he said Roberts for not releasing. Did Wales go away with points after that break?

That's the problem Womble, yeah your supposed to release them straight away but the moment you do, the pricks get up again without releasing the ball and the ref doesn't do anything. Def a penalty to the Scots for me there, how an international ref didn't ping him for that I dunno.

Really highlights the massive difficult refs have with interpretation at the tackle/breakdown. Do you penalise Lamont for not immediately releasing Roberts, or do you penalise Roberts for attempting to get to his feet and not immediately playing the ball? Since both things are meant to be done immediately it puts referees in an impossible situation, and hands them far far too much power, as they can essentially give a penalty to either team at nearly any breakdown, seemingly at will. There is something wrong with the rules when this much personal interpretation can go on. A referee should be able to watch a game on tv and agree that he would make the same decisions as the referee in the game at least 80-90% of the time, otherwise there's no consistency at all

I would get outraged about the ref not penalising Roberts for standing up without releasing but he'd let both sides away with it all game in an even handed manner. Gutting that it led to points in that situation though.

Is Lamont that fast or is Roberts that slow? Looked like he was standing still.
Maybe he was too focussed on the big screen: checking if the 'do' looked okay and all that...

Yeah roberts isn't known for his pace, when he gets going he can be hard to stop though!

Well in this case definitely penalty scotland. If roberts had released the ball and tried to get to his feet with lamont still holding on then it would have been a penalty to Wales. I think in such a case the ball carrier MUST place the ball in some form before continuing play.

To be fair there is also a case for a penno to Wales in that. Lamont doesn't really release Roberts after the tackle. Under the new law interpretations he's really got to let go completely, and then try and play the ball.

Either way, it's a well executed tackle, that had "jaw breaker" written all over it!

WHY ISN'T THIS GUY IN THE FIRST 15?

All he does is come in the game, score tries (against France), make line breaks and make try saving tackles.

Plus he has attitude and does not accept losing. That's what Scotland needs!

Just not against Ireland next round or they'll ruin my fantasy pool

Roberts really hasn't looked the same since coming back from injury. I'm sure he used to be quicker than that! he looks slower than banahan now! and that's saying something
