Jack Lam's big hand-off and hits against the Bulls

The defending champion Bulls picked up a convincing 26-14 Super Rugby away win over the Hurricanes in Napier on the weekend. The Canes dug deep though, and one of their players stood out despite being on the losing side.

The Hurricanes have now only won one game from five, a poor stat for a side with such top level representatives. Of course going down to the Bulls is nothing to be ashamed of, but sitting at the bottom of the New Zealand conference and 12th overall is a bit of a worry for the Wellington outfit.

"It's too early in the season to chuck it in. We have to carry on. The heads aren't up too high, but we can look at ourselves in the mirror and say we dug in all week and fronted up pretty good," said coach Mark Hammet.

One of the players who certainly did front up was flanker Jack Lam, whose work rate and fierce tackling perhaps went some way towards keeping things respectable for the home side.

He managed to get the Hurricanes going forward, cross the advantage line, and when the Bulls did the same, he smashed them back on more than one occasion. Great commitment, technique, and heart as part of a losing cause.

It's amusing how they go on about the perfect tackling technique yet he knocked the stuffing out of himself more than his opponent.

Gotta applaud the guy, great commitment in a losing team!

Might be mistaken, but I think he's playing out of position as well, thought he was a 7?

Not that it should really matter much in open play like that...

Those were some big hits. Jack Lam played for the Australian Schoolboy side, but moved back to New Zealand recently. I don't think he a close relation to Pat Lam, although I might be mistaken here.

The funniest thing about Lam's run at the begining of this video is how offside Bakkies Botha is in making the hit towards the end of the first part. Very surprised the ref didn't call that up.

Three things:

Nice one. Quite a "traditional" rugbydump type of clip isn't it. i.e. never mind the score, here's a bloke putting some great boshes in. The kind of clip that got many of us addicted to this site in the first place - or am I just speaking for myself?

never mind the score board, nothing but penalties and drop kicks (how exciting). Apparently he's a second cousin of Pat Lam.
Was a real menace for waikato last year in the ITM cup and seems to be making the step up. Will make a very good combination when Karl Lowe gets back.

At the end of the day this site is about entertainment, when the south africans start playing some entertaining rugby im sure they'll get some air time. The bulls tactics made the game as boring as watching paint dry.

I can never understand why the comments on Rugby Dump always disintegrate into pathetic arguments and name calling.

It wasn't always like this, and it really is a great shame.

I can't wait for the new comments system that has been mentioned a couple of times, as this will hopefully but an end to the negative comments.

Bahahaha, noone ever said that dropgoals and penalties dont count. But when your game plan revolves around putting the bomb up every time your in your 50 and going for droppies as soon as you get inside the opp 50 then your certainly not giving fans much of a reason to come out and watch the game.
Rugby is at war with other codes, i for one would like to see the sport grow globally and see the players make a better living for themselves. The bulls negative play is counter productive to that and tends to push fans away.
Theres no jealousy involved just out and out boredom.

The Bulls put up and unders up because they know the Hurricanes are chicken shits and won't catch them on the full - it was about a 90% return rate of possession for the Bulls. Bitter Hurricanes supporter thinks every team must play like Fiji. A reason why the Hurricanes have never won the compeition, while the Bulls have won it three out of the last four years.

South African rugby doesn't have any competition besides soccer which is a completely different sport. I doubt they give a shit about "code wars" down under.

The beauty of rugby is that there ARE different styles and ways of playing the game. This weekend's game (Crusaders vs Bulls) will showcase that excellently. It will be closer than most expect, with the 'Saders edging it.
At least we can all agree on the fact that Justin Marshall is a shocking commentator :)

Forgive my ignorance - perhaps someone could explain. How long does the ball have to be out of the ruck before it's considered in open play? I ask because I'm trying to understand how Botha was offside, as the ball was out of the ruck, hence in open play, in which there is no offside.
Is it because he was coming from an offside position (caused by the ruck)?

Stephen - once there has been a ruck, the defender has to retreat to the back of the ruck. If the play opens up - for example the ball is passed out of the ruck - he has to join the defensive line in order to be considered onside again.

Pretty sure the Admin is South African and more specifically, a Bulls fan.

If you perceive any bias it's probably on the back of your own. You see an influx of Kiwi videos when there is none.

Whether you're stating it as fact or not, your OP was erroneous. As is your understanding of the word itself.

RD does a lot of work to find an edit these clips, upload them host them on here and write about them, if you don't like the video choice then fuck off.... Quite frankly the less pricks on here the better, frees up a bit of space for those who enjoy the game!

Agreed with the Anon about Marshall. He is a terrible commentator, bring back Mexted, or just let Nisbo commentate by himself... either alternative is preferable to his nonsense. Also I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I found that his Crusader bias came through pretty clearly in this game..
