Midweek Madness - Rupeni Caucau's butchered try for Toulouse
Toulouse comfortably secured a Top 14 semi final spot with their 33-0 win over Bourgoin at the Stade Ernest Wallon on the weekend. Rupeni Caucau got a little carried away with things though.
Clearly in control after two tries to wing Vincent Clerc, the former superstar Caucau broke the line beautifully then offloaded to Maxime Medard, who fed him in return for what should have been a casual stroll to the tryline.
The flying Fijian, these days plying his trade in the midfield more often than not, managed to bring out the goosestep before somersaulting as he put the ball down to score. The only problem was, he didn't put the ball down, according the referee anyway.
It was referred, and the try was disallowed as it was adjudged to have not made contact with the ground while his fingers were touching it. By all means it was a close call, and many would have said just give it. It is an interesting one though in light of some of the celebrations we've seen of late, which some of you have taken a severe disliking too.
So do you think this try could have been given, or did Caucau make a massive fool of himself?

I'm all for the try celebrations that we've seen in Super Rugby this season. It's all in good fun. But the thing about those celebrations is that they happened AFTER the ball was placed. You don't just cross the try line, drop the ball and celebrate--this isn't NFL.
By Garrett Perrella, at April 27, 2011 7:11 pm
no downward pressure...no try
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 7:12 pm
Tyrone, you silly fat bastard
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 7:12 pm
correct call. He never had control, he just dropped it on the ground. Pro's should know better
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 7:13 pm
Chris Ashton...
God is watching!
By cheyanqui, at April 27, 2011 7:16 pm
I say he made a massive fool of himself, after good build up play he should have simply tapped the ball home. Celebrations are cool but you can't lose precious points for your team because of something which is extra in the game.

Poor fella, clearly the thought of playing Leinster has got to him
By BAC, at April 27, 2011 7:20 pm
Glorious.
Showboating should be left to the soccer players....
By Emmet, at April 27, 2011 7:27 pm
Can't believe it... OMG!

Con!
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 7:36 pm
Oh dear, rather embarrassing. I've nothing against celebrations as long as they're not too over the top and as someone has already said, they take place after the try has been scored and not before or during. He's just made himself look a bit silly.
By JJ, at April 27, 2011 7:40 pm
As much as I love Caucau, that was retarded. It wasn't even the flip, he just failed to ground the ball with no pressure. This is the first thing everyone is told when they start playing rugby.
He did show how good he still is though. He just broke through the line with ease and jogged the whole way. Caucau was (is?) too good for his own good. I think it ruined him. He could have been another Lomu if he had the drive.

Almost choked on my dinner at the "Tyrone, you silly fat bastard" comment.
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 8:02 pm
The referee could have shown sympathy for the build up and given it. Glad he didn't. I'm all for the fun celebration after the try (Ioane and Cooper) but not before the ball is grounded. Ridiculous thing to do. Good on the ref!
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 8:05 pm
Retarded play-acting. Ideal caper for NFL or soccer "performers", but there's no place for these antics in rugby. He got what he deserved.
By StephenC, at April 27, 2011 8:14 pm
Too casual, Bourgoin are cannon fodder.
Still, no celebration f-up will ever be as embarrassing as Leguizamon's. That dive was high!
By John F, at April 27, 2011 8:16 pm
If it wasnt for the large scoreline, i'd have said check his bank balance!!!
By No.7, at April 27, 2011 8:20 pm
Give the guy the try, that's the closest he's been to his toes in a long time.
By Nick, at April 27, 2011 8:25 pm
great spot by the ref
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 8:25 pm
I thought it's him not able to reach the ground so had to do a front flip to put it down instead of being a celebration.
then again he could just have dived or bend his knees~
on the first watch I thought he had grounded it.
By Jeroz, at April 27, 2011 8:34 pm
lesson learnt I would hope...also could have had his nose mashed by the following defenders knee!
By I hate ppl who write "First!", at April 27, 2011 8:48 pm
ahahaha he dropped it, what a fat cunt
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 8:51 pm
he STILL has that totally relaxed running style that makes it look like he's just cruising...
when very few can keep up!

the man's a legend but it really looked like the extra weight he's carrying just pulled his gravity off...and down he went...

Loving the "Tyrone" joke...
By Le Brack, at April 27, 2011 9:16 pm
THAT is what you call epic fail. As Emmet said, showboating is soooo bad. Hope you will learn from it, like every other rugby player!
THAT is a nice celebration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxzbuXyu4Fw

Everybody, have fun playing rugby, and make your life from it, don't become a hooligan, and fight for the Rugby Spirit, keep it a great sport!
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 9:18 pm
It just occurred to me that with all the crazy things we see nowadays, I would hardly even call that showboating any more.
Good on the Ref. It was a fair call.
This is also a very good example why the defending player should always follow a potential try scorer until the whistle blows.
By EARugbyFan, at April 27, 2011 9:32 pm
Lmao. He let go bout .1 second before he should have. I actually feel sorry for him.
Infact one of he best tries I've ever seen was from the 90s, the Crusaders in Super Rugby, and to finish a try somebody does the same roll lol
Unfortunate for Caucau but I don't think it's too much of a showboat
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 9:36 pm
Tyrone???
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 9:50 pm
^^^ ...Never seen Snatch?!??
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 9:54 pm
Haha that's what you get from pre scoring showboating.
I hope Ashton suffers this very incident to learn how to ground the ball O'Driscoll style.
Anon, I think you are refering to a Crusaders score in which Aaron Mauger stepped inside and made this same roll.
By Juggernauter, at April 27, 2011 10:21 pm
ha ha, what a tit!!!

By Jonno, at April 27, 2011 11:30 pm
Shocking as ever from Caucau, but it's still great to have a big personality like that in the game.
Everyday I'm truffle shuffling!
By Fatty fatty boom boom, at April 27, 2011 11:39 pm
Ok, prime example why 'pre scoring showboating' is not always safe (if you think this is pre scoring showboating)
However, am i the only one that thinks pre scoring stuff is better than after stuff... least it doesnt slow stop part of the game down...
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 11:55 pm
I was at the other end and you knew the moment it went to video he must have dropped it. Head in hands time. Can somebody please show Chris Ashton.
By Anonymous, at April 27, 2011 11:58 pm
Refs did a good job to spot that and raise the question.
Not only does he do a shit celebration but he doesn't score either LMFAO.
By mupee, at April 28, 2011 12:00 am
WOW, he is the quickest fatty ever on earth, holly shit es faster than me and 20 kgs heavier of pure fat!!
this means tecnique beats gym work
By Manfroyd, at April 28, 2011 12:08 am
What a complete and utter tool! Hope the coach tore him a new one, even though they killed the other team..
By Anonymous, at April 28, 2011 12:22 am
forget tries, let's just celebrate all the time. Maybe the cheerleaders should be the main event. cheering, dancing, trying to see which camera is pointing in their direction...
By I love people who say FIRST!, at April 28, 2011 12:25 am
I wouldn't really say this was a full blown celebration, it probably wasn't planned it just happened when he put the ball down. I don't know where everyone else is coming from, to me it looked a lot closer than everyone is suggesting. His hand definitely moves down the ball but I thought he still had a finger on it, could easily see it being given the other way. All of Ashton's shit is annoying but I don't see why Caucau is being tarred with the same brush for something not even remotely this same, this is more in the Umaga league for the Canes a few years back when he dropped the ball after diving.
By Auckblues22, at April 28, 2011 12:52 am

score first, celebrate after.
By Anonymous, at April 28, 2011 4:54 am
As the match was quite finished, it is funny to watch.
But, yes, it is a very good piece of video to show to every cocky players who like to score in an insane manner. a personal eye-glance to Cooper, Ashton or other fidjians
Guy Noves certainly gave him a frank tap on his shoulder after that ;)
By Flooz, at April 28, 2011 11:19 am
celebrate AFTER you score the try
By Chief Financial Shaman, at April 28, 2011 11:24 am
insanely stupid.. if your going to be cocky dont mess it up! otherwise you just end up looking like an idiot.. example this video

well i guess that's 1-0 to Caucau!
some people get the better of him once-but not twice:)
By Leeners93, at April 28, 2011 5:49 pm
Not sure he'll be lined up vs. Leinster...
+1000 for the Tyrone comment.
So yeah fat and all, Dominici had sthg around the same line a few years back.
Then again it's those same people who have plays that will stay forever in the top notch rugby archives :P obivously not this one tho
By jay, at April 28, 2011 6:44 pm
It wasn't even a good way of celebrating/showing off...
A normal slide would have looked much better plus he would have actually scored...
Nothing agaisnt celebration or swan dives but doing forward rolls is just idiotic..If I was his coach I'd seriously consider dropping him

By katman, at April 29, 2011 8:58 am
Good spot by the referee, get the ball down then celebrate. It would have been even better if it had been Chris Ashton.
By Anonymous, at April 29, 2011 8:52 pm
Actually I think what would be funny would be if an australian would actually try and do something interesting before scoring therefore they wouldnt actually be wasting time!
By Anonymous, at April 30, 2011 3:27 am
TOUCH DOWN!!!!!!!
By Anonymous, at April 30, 2011 11:51 am
I didn't think he was showboating as much as he has got that big pot belly out of control and couldn't really get low enough to ground the ball.
