David Smith scores off rebound, and Olivier Missoup big hit then try
While the French Top 14 season kicked off last weekend in the shadow of the upcoming World Cup, Toulon got things off to a good start. They beat Biarritz 30-5, scoring some nice tries. Here's two of the better efforts.
While the Top 14 started last weekend, this weekend it's the turn of the Aviva Premiership and Magners League to start, with the latter now being called the RaboDirect PRO12.
They'll all continue during the World Cup, so we'll keen an eye on things and make sure the updates keep ticking over, especially when their is such talent on show, and a whole bunch of new imports from all over the globe.
David Smith is one such import that is sure to make an impact. The former Hurricanes and Western Force flyer scored his first try for his new club Toulon, with yet another one of these 'chase the penalty in case of a rebound' tries. We've seen a few of late, and this one yet again showed how valuable it is to keep that high work-rate up.
The second try featured here was one that looked pretty awesome, simply because of the big hit then great sprint for the tryline. Hefty flanker Olivier Missoup, who admittedly doesn't look extremely agile, showed great wheels after flattening Biarritz's hapless number nine.

about Missoup's try, front row's coach Azam admitted that they worked it in training since he knows Biarritz often uses this combination
By parcequetoulon, at September 02, 2011 6:26 pm
since he knew the whole biarritz would sleeping that afternoon.
Suzy are you there ?

THat defender, in number 15 I think, should slap himself.
I understand poor communication with his mate, but he atleast had to make some sort of effort. Pulling out like that is unacceptable
And i don't care how good or not David Smith is, in terms of physically explosive players he has to be p4p the most explosive in Rugby, or close too it
Does anyone know who sponsors Toulon, out of curiosity :D

The RaboDirect PRO12?? Yuck

Toulon doesn't really need a sponsor for its finances. It is owned by Mourad Boudjellal, who created its own company in comics before buying and managing the RCT. His personal fortune is evaluated around €40 M.

The last comment is nuts.
Of course Toulon need sponsors. Boudjelal don't give any money since two years.
The main sponsors are on this website:

RadoPro 12????????
Come on, It's Top 14 here :D
About investors: Mourad Boudjellal is the main investor in the club.
and main sponsors are Volkswagen and Invicta.
About Biarritz it's not a communication problem. It just that players were absolutely not commited in this game, they never started it. One of the coach said that "players never leaved Biarritz".
Anyway great try for Missoup.

Lol, I think the sponsor comment about Toulon was a joke, as the Volkswagon sponsorship is pretty blatant

Anyone else think that Missoups's try was perhaps a knock on?
Smith is awesome, always enjoyed watching him with the Hurricanes

@ Canadian Content
Castaignede who commented the game on tv also said there was (perhaps) a knock on in the tackle. Not so clear to me...

40 millions Euros will not finance a rugby team for very long... what a stupid answer.

Missoup's try just looks awesome :)
Smith try: He definitely showed athleticism and commitment, but biarritz should have had someone there to catch the ball. I'm continually amazed by players that forget the ball is still live on a penalty kick and aren't prepared to field it. Even on a deflection like that; since there's enough players to cover each contingency. A similar sort of try happened to my team once, so I always make sure that it never happens again. Don't all teams have one of those stories?

When did everyone stop understanding sarcasm?
The person who asked who sponsors Toulon even put a ":D" sign after the question to indicate he/she was taking the piss! Making a joke about how big the VW logo is - takes up almost the entire front of the shirt.
Quite funny on first read.

why is david smith not in samoas world cup squad?
or does he hope to play one day for australia or something like this ?
By Beattle, at September 03, 2011 4:59 pm
I thought the north knew who to defend?
By Anonymous, at September 03, 2011 5:32 pm
David Smith has played for the All Black 7s team, I do believe, meaning he can't play for Samoa.
He was very good this year for the Force, it was a shame to see him leave Australia, he is a lot of fun to watch.

As we see more and more big names going over to french rugby ,,,is kinda like the NFL where the networks own or partly get their share of money airing those big names on TV . Its the NETWORK in France making deals with the clubs to bring in big names will attract viewers. The most damaging to explode is the States when it does its going to be painful for all the big rugby crazy nations. They have the biggest networks in world.Just think about US buying players around 2015.
By ilexvunibola, at September 03, 2011 8:05 pm
Your allusion to the NFL is a little hard to understand. It's tough seeing what you're trying to correlate between the two. NFL players go from here to there for various reasons... none of which have to do with tv networks. I no nothing of France and it would make sense to me if that's how it works there like you said...but in the NFL, tv networks have nuttin to do with nuttin regarding player movement.
By nfl nut but bigger rugby nut, at September 04, 2011 2:52 am
@ilexvunibola Your conclusion is wrong.Canal + pays very little, much less than football.Rugby professional lives thanks to the many sponsors. When a TV channel will be ready to put 100 million euros in France, then things will change.
By Anonymous, at September 04, 2011 9:31 am
Canal + pays 180 M€ / year for soccer
Canal + pays 30 M€ / year for rugby.
Those 30 M€ are for all 30 french professionnals clubs of Top 14 and Pro D2.
About money : Toulon and Toulouse are the only clubs that make little money.
And if Boudjellal needed to put some money on the table at the beginning, he's just the CEO and partners manager for many years now.
About the team : the same team that beat Biarritz last week was humiliated by Clermont 0-17 yesterday.
So there is a lot of work to do still.
Thanx FFR : Saint-Andre will leave soon. Better late than never...

Lovely to hear another "Smeess" playing in the top 14, "il est la, Davide Smeess" put a smile on my face. George Smith still the classic.
Keep up the great work with the worldwide coverage RD, I know it's gotta be stressful with RWC looming large but can't wait to see what's new for the site.

There is also "Brad Sorn", but I think Italian commentators are fun too.
