Super 12 highlights 1996 - 1998

The 2009 Super 14 kicks off this weekend as we get to see the best provincial sides in the southern hemisphere do battle for the honour of top dog as all sides will once again look to challenge last years champions, the Crusaders.

This week we’ll be taking a look back at some previous seasons of arguably one of the best domestic competitions around.

With the rise of professionalism, the inaugural Super 12 tournament kicked off back in 1996, with the final being contested by the Auckland Blues and the Natal Sharks. Auckland dominated for a few years, with players such as big Joeli Vidiri and Jonah Lomu featuring prominently.

The Blues, with a young Carlos Spencer leading the way, won again in 1997 before they were outdone in 1998, with the emergence of what would be the most successful team in Super Rugby history – the Crusaders.

This clip shows tries from some of the top teams throughout those three seasons and will bring back some great memories for those who watched the matches and players at the time. It’s also a collection that gives great insight for those who’ve never seen Super 12 footage from the era.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 10, 2009 11:35 pm

  • the first clips had gordon bray commentating, did super 12 used to be broadcasted on 7?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 10, 2009 11:51 pm

  • James, what's your deal, mate? Why are you always trying to stir something up by knocking the other hemisphere? Let it be.

A large number of these tries also came from problems with defense (holes on the line, not spreading enough and leading to overloads for the offense, or committing too many to a tackle).

Why not just enjoy a great try for what it is? And these were all pretty great tries.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 3:10 am

  • Haha yea james cos S14 is NEVER dull
the refs out there are blind

  • yep james talk talk talk now and then silent at world cup time when his teams choke to "weaker" northern teams, fucks sake, thats the last 2 blogs you have been stirring up shit that is totally unecessary, seriously grow up and let your balls drop and shut the fuck up "mate"!

    "this is the shit

    see everyone S14 = excitement
    not maul/ruck/maul/yawn/kick/yawn/hit up/yawn/drop goal"

What the fuck does all that mean, if your referring to french team play please have a long look back in history, oh yeah i forgot its hard 4 SH to look back at their results against the french at big tournaments = total choker and if your an aussie its even worse, you get beat by england every time, you stupid prick keep your mouth shut when your so open to fucking mental criticsm yourself. Idiot hick.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 10:55 am

  • Anonymous your replies are even worse than jamestheconvicts. James is clearly a 12 year old child trying to wind people up but your comments are full of swearing and even referring to the disaster happening in australia at the moment, that is no joke, your comments iare disgusting. You should both be ashamed of yourselves. James if you have a problem with the NH then don't watch games involving them, we don't care if you like them or not so stop boring us with stupid comments. And anonymous, think you need some anger management or something.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 11:39 am

  • geraint - spot on - james being very immature but anonymous - are you several people or just one ? if your all alone in this world then i suggest you get some anger help also

james probably wins all the local fishing comps

  • hi all - im back

    anonymous - french play ?????

i was actually referring to english rugby specifically - french rugby ??? Im still in shock.

Have you ever seen the french play ?? clearly you havent

wow dude - the whole bush fire thing is a bit heavy - sorry u feel that way

    do you play rugby ??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:07 pm

  • I wrote the long one about james with the swear words in it but i didnt do any of the ones about the bush fires guys and for the swearing i totally apologise, well out of line, think i got a bit too passionate but that guy gets on my nerves, im registering now and will decloak myself. Im an Irish Rugby Fanatic and i use the name Kenny. Again apologies to all about the swearing , but it was not me with the bush fire jokes.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:23 pm

  • at the end of the year you will see that australia/nz are sooooo far ahead of the rest of the world. SA next but Devilliers to play the "im not saying im like jesus " card and waste a few games with funky decisions

i just dont understand why you will not admit it

just watch what Robbie creates with Oz

Whats Johnson actually up to ? Andy Goode ? WOW thats inspired

And Nick Mallet ?? seriously - Mauro is a 7

Lievremont is clearly struggling with lots of young players with not enough top level experience

Declan Kidney - will really find out if the wave is going to crash this weekend

and then there is Warren Gatland - no wonder Wales are triple crown champs

put them all in a room - and tell me who stands out as a rugby coach

    the Kiwi !!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:30 pm

  • Only time will tell, Ireland sacked gatland and got to 4th in the world after with an Irish coach, The welsh won the grand slam in 2005 with a welsh coach so i dont think that your theory adds up. Wait till the end of the tournament of Gatland is still the grand slam/ 6 nation champ then yeah maybe but untill then it all just talk.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 12:38 pm

  • talk talk talk talk talk

    SH 19 - NH 1

it kind of speaks for itself

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:48 pm

  • aussierugbyfan

Im Irish and all i have to say to that is england 12 australia 10 rwc 07 and lets not forget 03 final and im Irish not English, even the "crap" pushed you close on your own soil with BOD scoring try of the year so it doesnt really speak for itself lol

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 12:52 pm

  • 1 try - 1 win - 2 points

come one - just admit it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:54 pm

  • Can't front up when it really counts in the RWC can you though lads?
    That must really irk you?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:56 pm

  • we won 2 kenny !!!! what are you talking about

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 12:59 pm

  • kenny sorry - wasnt you

it was Kember - im sure Kenny - you would even not say something that silly

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 1:00 pm

  • look im being diplomatic and carefull here, i havent been slagging SH rugby its pretty feckin cool but its the fact that all i hear is that NH rugby is crap when it really competes well at the big tournaments.
If SH Rugby fans werent so arrogant about the whole thing then maybe this wouldnt keep popping up in every post. It a big vicous circle.
I have to say though that kember does, in my opinion, speak the truth on the world cup and by the sounds of it, touched a raw nerve with you aussierugbyfan, I guess sometimes the truth hurts, doesnt it.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 1:09 pm

  • kenny we won 2 - are u that dumb as well ? how does a country that doesnt shop up win 2 ??

did Ireland even shop up to the ground ????

maybe they forgot their boots at the last 6 tournaments

u idiots - the truth is the truth

S14 starts this weekend and im sure RD will post some vids - then u can decide

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 1:13 pm

  • "kenny we won 2 - are u that dumb as well ? how does a country that doesnt shop up win 2 ??

did Ireland even shop up to the ground ????"
wtf does "shop" mean man?? youve got me with that one there, and less of the name calling, this is a blog not a school yard so calm down.
You started with the autumn internationals and i pointed out that the they have lost to NH hemisphere teams in the previous WCs. I only pointed this out because you said SH is way better than NH.
Again ill say it as i had began by being diplomatic but as i am an "idiot" ill spell it out.
AUSTRALIA LOST TO NH TEAMS IN THE LAST 2 WORLD CUPS AND IN THE AUTUMN SO QUIT WITH THE SH BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE BS CAUSE HISTORY AND PREVIOUS RESULTS ARGUES AGAINST YOU "MAAAAAAAAATE" struth!!

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 1:24 pm

  • sorry for the spelling mistake - show up

we still won 2 kenny - is that part of history

    u guys seem to forget this fact - 2 not 1 - 2 - you there ? we won 2

    87 NZ
    91 Oz
    95 SA
    99 OZ
    03 England
    07 SA

    so 5 SH RWC's - 1 NH RWC

    Autumn SH 20 - NH 1

anymore history lessons required - i dont see ireland in that list

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 1:29 pm

  • Thats cause there not, ive never doubted aus brilliance in the past but the like i said before arrogance like this

    "talk talk talk talk talk

    SH 19 - NH 1

it kind of speaks for itself"

Gets you stick for results like
    this
    Italy 14 - 22
    France 13 - 18
    Wales 21 - 18

your near miss aginst Italy and your trampling at the hands of Wales.
France only lost because skrela couldnt finish his dinner conversion wise.
Your team hardly steam rolled NH teams. In fact you were lucky to get even 2 wins out of 4.
Your stats are hiding glaring holes and deficiencies in your team.
Id be worried if i were you.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 1:46 pm

  • Kenny mate, you're Irish... apart from Munster, you guys don't have much to cheer. The Australians are clearly a work in progress, so the Aussie is hardly saying anything revolutionary. And I think you left out their win over England in your analysis... The SH teams are rated by commentators and officially ranked higher than the north teams right now. Might all be different again in 2011. Chill out Paddy.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 2:26 pm

  • Yes Fontane we mite not have much to cheer about except Munster being european champs 2 out of the last 3 years, I am calm about all of this. The Irish have one of the youngest squads in the world and a new coach who has brought success wherever he goes. So we are also a work in progress and i think we beat the french in quite a wondeful way on saturday , which shows that maybe the future could be bright for us. Fontane Argentina are 4th and we beat them in autumn so rankings dont count 4 much. England are 5th and they r shit so please dont bring up rankings either they dont tell the true story, results do.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 2:45 pm

  • South Africa and new Zealand all had great November tours to the northern hemisphere but the aussies looked crap, hate to be bearer of bad news, you beat england easily but like i said england are quite weak and clueless at the moment but you nearly lost to Italy and France and got bashed around by wales. i really dont care about world cups but if you wanna hum and haw about your recent form, its been raged and patchy to say the least for such a "strong" team.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 2:53 pm

  • The last time the Aussies played agianst the Boks they lost 53-8.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 3:02 pm

  • Yep and they lost to the kiwis but they were very close and played out a great game, plus the kiwis are a class act who beat just about everybody in every game. But the point is the aussies form has been shit of late. So less of the arrogance from the guys down under cause its unnecessary, and frankly yous dont have a laeg to stand on.

By Blogger Kenny, at February 11, 2009 3:25 pm

  • Oh for heaven's sake.

Look the SH sides play some great rugby. So do the NH sides. Sometimes SH rugby isn't entertaining. Sometimes NH rugby isn't either.

All this 'my team's better than your team' stuff is just so playground. It's like we all make ourselves feel better by associating ourselves with the team from our country, "my team beat your team therefore I am better than you". I have been as guilty of it as anyone else but I think it has to stop.

The debates on the bottom of these clips used to be interesting, they used to be about RUGBY not pointless one-up-manship. Let's leave all that stuff to adolescent YouTube users eh lads, and celebrate the game that we all have in common. Please?

  • What the heck is going on in here? Strange kind of "discussion"
    Great Vid, liked it alot

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 6:10 pm

  • Some nice memories from the early days of Super Rugby.

Natal with Honiball and Joubert. Honiball brought physicality to the #10 rarely seen before him.
Joubert's positional play made a fat, slow forward like me admire what backs could actually do. When an opponent kicked to the back of Natal, Joubert almost always seemed to be right under the ball.

Also wonderful to see the highlight reel of Lomu and Vidiri. Shame that both had career ending kidney issues.

Plus any video showing Zinzan Brooke gets a thumbs up too.

On a side note, any insights as to why there is such a prevalence of kidney disease amongst Polynesians? Is it genetic, or diet-related?

I once heard rumors that Lomu juiced. But after seeing hard news stories about overall kidney disease in many island nations, I don't buy the 'roids explanation very much.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 7:13 pm

  • can i just say, Lomu will never be suprassed as both a rugby player or a sportsman: he is a man before his time who is the reason people like Vainakolo,Sailor and Banahan are allowed to play on the wing instead of being forced into the back row due to their size.

Glad i got that off my chest!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 11, 2009 8:05 pm

  • yeah these comments are a bit lame ... just enjoy the rugby ? NH or SH ?

    sheesh .

cheyanqui : Yep, the Pacific Islanders (along with Caribbeans, Hispanics, Native Americans) are more at risk to diabetes

lesson over ... go Blues .

nice shades Wayne Smith... John Belushi would be proud

By Blogger boomshanka, at February 11, 2009 10:06 pm

  • i love carlos....absolute class

    By Blogger gorge6, at February 11, 2009 11:54 pm

  • Brazil and Argentina have won the football World Cup more than England too. Still doesn't stop them being third world countries with sucky domestic leagues where the players are paid in Monopoly money (hence their moves abroad to real countries).

The SH should be ahead of the NH, rugby is a borederline minority sport in the NH (more people play handball in France). It would be like comparing the NZ, SA and Oz football leagues... and national sides. Then we really are in joke territory. A league anyone?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2009 1:25 am

  • Wut a blunber - the corner flag is now removed and the post is no man land XD

By Blogger vinniechan, at February 12, 2009 8:53 am

  • Another anonymous idiot. Rugbydump, couldn't we remove the option to leave anonymous posts? It really is annoying.

And for your information pal, rugby isn't the no. 1 sport in Oz either, it's about third after Ozzy Rules and Rugby League. Besides which we (and I'm talking England here) have the largest player base and the richest union so we really don't have any excuses when the SH sides beat us. They're just better than us at the moment, that's the bottom line.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2009 9:06 am

  • What difference does it make if you enter a random username? I could easily leave a post as "will66".

    I'm an idiot...see.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2009 12:21 pm

  • The point is that you can reply to somebody if they leave a name. If you have five comments by different people all labelled 'anonymous' then it's quite difficult to specify who you are talking to.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2009 3:21 pm

  • Anyone else notice that at 5:00 M. Jones gets the intercept try and on the VERY next clip gives up a soft try by going fo it again. CLASSIC!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2009 3:23 pm

  • What happened to that Carlos Spencer guy whom played for the All Blacks a short time ago?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2009 7:46 am

  • he moved to england, plays for northampton saints, i think, in the guiness premiership. shame...
