Midweek Madness - Rugby Cheerleaders

When it comes to the most talked about and controversial incidents on the rugby field, we’ve always done our best to bring you all the action. Eye-gouging, fighting, high tackles – we don’t endorse or encourage it, we simply show it.

It’s under that premise that we’ve got a rather different video for you today. As we strive to bring you the best in rugby, from interviews to funnies, we thought it was about time we featured a different side of the game.

While the purists or prudish out there may not approve, we’re pretty sure the vast majority of rugby supporters have no problem with, and even enjoy, rugby cheerleaders and dancers.

While foreign to rugby until the rise of professionalism, cheerleaders and dancers are now common place, particularly in the Super 14, which is where this footage comes from.

From the famous Sharks flasher girls, to the Hurricanes’ blondes, the fans get to see their favourite teams parade a bevy of beauties before, after, and during the match.

The girls themselves are now even featured on the team’s individual websites, causing locker-room talk about which team has the best looking girls.

Yes critics, this isn’t actually rugby, but neither is Austin Healey arm wrestling, or David Strettle making a fool of himself on a gameshow. We try to give you an all round rugby experience, so kick back and enjoy this look at one of the finer aspects of the game.

  • Granted you guys have better looking birds. Is there any explanation as to why they're all complete nutjobs though?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 2:47 pm

  • Rugbymad - you don't like it don't watch it. It's not like you didn't know what was going to be there.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 3:08 pm

  • That bird at the end in the mack with the 'S' is hot.
Anonymous above, all brids are nutjobs mate!

  • The cheerleaders at sale are pretty hot. Haha i once gave a coat to a scantily-clad cheerleader at the twickenham 7's when it started raining.

....anyway a montage video with tries, tackles and babes would be tops

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 3:15 pm

  • OK OK!!! I finally give in!!!!The Southern Hemisphere is much better that the Northern Hemisphere

By Blogger Kenny, at March 11, 2009 3:19 pm

  • I could go on a long tirade about 'cheerleaders' in rugby, and in general, but i won't. I'll give my opinion in a pseudo-polite manner though.

I'll say this, as my opinion on cheerleading in rugby. It has no real place.

I don't want to see it. In the same way i wouldn't expect to watch a porn movie and out of no where, for no reason, rugby players spontaneously start making appearances throughout.

It's a matter of relevance to me, and i've never been good with multitasking.

At the same time i can appreciate the 'professionalism' Super 14 bring to the game. In terms of what they present as an allround package. They're on the right direction to making it not just a sporting game, but a spectacle.

And aslong as i'm sat at home watching the game with the help of a professional camera crew, as apposed to sitting in Row A of the stadium where they're possibly blocking my view of the game, i don't care.

To end, if you are going to get girls to parade around half naked for my viewing pleasure, atleast use girls with better figures. 90% of cheerleaders are all tits and no arse. Excuse my French.

By Blogger Jennifer, at March 11, 2009 3:27 pm

  • "The cheerleaders at sale are pretty hot."

Indeed. Alot of them lookg quite young though. I'm only 19 mind, but to memory quite alot of them can't be over 18.

I know because i was drunk last time i went to watch Sale play, and tried hitting on a few of them at half time.

    Didn't get too far though.

By Blogger Jennifer, at March 11, 2009 3:31 pm

  • The thing is these images only look good on TV. If you are at the ground the girls get lost on the size of the pitch - particularly in 50 000 seater SA stadiums. It requires a close up camera to make it seem exciting. To my mind i would rather have full brass marching bands, or something similar, as a means for generating more excitement in the stadium. Either that or much larger cohorts of girls to make more of a spectacle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 3:41 pm

  • "I'll say this, as my opinion on cheerleading in rugby. It has no real place." amen to that

I disagree....watching S14 games on TV I only see them like once or twice...it's not like they're putting on a ten minute shows.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 4:27 pm

  • Oh my word there's some prudes posting comments here.

We're all male (90% anyway I'm sure), and we all like females (100% I'm sure).. so what's the issue? It's just harmless entertainment.. dancing, jeering the crowd up.. have a lil perv when the game is slow or boring.. no biggie.

If you find it distracting from the rugby and cant focus, then you need to get out more imo. I say why not. And it's not stricly SH anyway.. so dont even goooo there you silly argumentative types.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 4:32 pm

  • to all you niminy-piminy jerks bothering about the quality of this page - it's only the second time cheerleaders have a major role in a RD video so please stop complaining...
honestly, i find them quite enjoyable if not even enriching. especially when you're sitting in the staium and you have to wait for the 20th scrum reset - those girls are really keeping the boredom away from you ^^
    so thank you RD :D

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 4:55 pm

  • This is nive, VERY nice....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 4:56 pm

  • I do love girls, especially in those outfits but since when has it become a part of rugby? I thought cheerleading was american bullsh*t.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:03 pm

  • This is a bit stupid really. I mean if I want to watch good-looking girls dance around like strippers then I can just go to the internet.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:24 pm

  • "Anonymous said...

I do love girls, especially in those outfits but since when has it become a part of rugby? I thought cheerleading was american bullsh*t."

    Cheerleading IS Yanky bullshit.

But you're a prude or a social recluse if you hold that view.

By Blogger Jennifer, at March 11, 2009 5:26 pm

  • who complains about half naked women shaking their boobies?
it just for a laugh chill out, plus if you were sat in the front row i bet it would make for some entertainment during the injury breaks!
hurricanes girls definately the fittest, unspeakable things would happen to them

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:29 pm

  • No problem with the cheerleaders at all, but wouldnt like to see them used as frequently as they are in the US. Just before and at half-time, otherwise 'pipe down luv im trying to watch the rugby'

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:43 pm

  • one of the best vids i have ever seen!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:48 pm

  • SH people drive pickups, live in wooden houses and make rugby look gross. Good thing the NH is there otherwise rugby would become frickin NFL...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:49 pm

  • If there was anything that displays Rugbys shark jumping state it would be this. Its great ill admit but tbh we are going the way of NFL and rugby is starting to lose grip on what it really was when everyother sport jumped it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:49 pm

  • I'm not a prude and definitely not a social recluse and i personally don't think they go together. They work very well on their own though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:50 pm

  • any1 whoe complains about this video deserves a good old fashioned name calling

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:56 pm

  • My favourite cheerleaders will always be those twats that dress up as Braveheart extras for Scotland home matches!
Their kilts/skirts are shorter than most cheerleaders and they wear more facepaint/make up than transvestites!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 6:00 pm

  • WHY ONLY IN SUPER 14?!?!?!?!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 6:34 pm

  • thats some good clean family fun there cotton

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 7:01 pm

  • To be honest, the choreography could use some work... =p

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 7:25 pm

  • I'd never seen something like this on a rugby pitch... damn it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 7:52 pm

  • Check out the size of the rack on the random girl in the crowd half way though.... jesus!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 7:53 pm

  • 2nd on the choreography...get some better routines...at least we americans got the rest of you beat on that...now that i read what i just wrote...i laugh, sadly...our dancing girls beat your dancing girls, but we stink at rugby.

RD, keep up the good work!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 7:55 pm

  • Oh my gosh, I can't believe the organisators havn't done this more earlier and more often! It's so cool and hot! Personally I think it would be benifital in all ways! It would boost the amount of spectators and attract new people to rugby! Don't you guys think? Let us follow the more examples of American football, they have shown us the way! They know how to make a game more intersting!

    Yeah.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 8:37 pm

  • Ok so maybe the SH is better, well until the rugby starts obviously LOL

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 8:37 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 9:52 pm

  • It's always nice to see promoters working hard to exclude women from the sport.

Ban them from the grounds I say, unless they're ironing and baking.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 10:33 pm

  • out of all the videos rugbydump has even posted this is by far the best.

    eye candy.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 10:57 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 12:14 am

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 12:26 am

  • im not into girls

male cheerleaders would be nice though

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 1:05 am

  • Nice RD!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 1:25 am

  • It´s a tough call. You can either see it as harmless or as the begining of a "NFL" kinda like show.

In my personal opinion i think that a bunch of hot chicks (becouse i do addmit that they are hot and of course i like to see them shakin they money maker) have nothing to do with the sport and it´s philosophy.

If we keep it that way we´ll end argeuing with the judges and loosing all that sober-respectfull temperament rugby teaches.

    Just my opinion.
As always thanks from Uruguay for everything RD!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 5:45 am

  • This would never work in the UK!

British women are fat pale pimply grunts!

    BWAHAHA!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 8:25 am

  • Anonymous ^

As apposed to the blonde bimbos shown in this video.

The cheerleaders in this video have the figure of a 12 year old girl. Ie none at all.

I'll never understand the Southern Hemispheres obsession with underweight, flat as an ironing board average females.

Compared to British girls, who naturally have the biggest breasts in the world for example. Not to mention the fact it's a complete melting pot, plenty of tanned and even 'ethnic' girls.

I'd take a British girl any day over the figureless chav dolts being produced down south.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 9:11 am

  • anonymous with the wooden house preoccupation that you repeat over and over in comments, you are probably the biggest fool in this whole stupid NH/SH "debate" and certainly the most boring.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 9:19 am

  • DAMN I COULD DO WITH ONE OF THOSE.......!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 9:39 am

  • agree about British grunts!

Britain has the most un-enticing fugly fat women on the planet, and would drive all the spectators away if they had to try and have cheerleaders at their games!

English rugby is already in enough trouble as it is!

By Blogger martint, at March 12, 2009 9:48 am

  • I remember they tried this at gloucester about 10 years ago. Chunky farmers daughters do not make good cheerleaders.

This I could handle, I think it may be time for a southern hemisphere rugby sabbatical...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 10:38 am

  • I think whoever is arguing about SH and NH are a bunch of Gays...
Now the women are savage and all but dont belong at a rugby game simple as that, certainly not on the pitch anyway, Sure the Kitchen Sink that is tied to them would just wreck the pitch haha..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 11:09 am

  • The guy complaining about the figures on these gals has got to be joking. You wish, my friend, you wish.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 11:22 am

  • yeah at least we have better cheerleaders : ) lol we beat you guys on something

By Blogger Joe, at March 12, 2009 11:44 am

  • theyre will be an NH v SH debate on this board no matter what the vid is wont there?

Please put a video of some blue paint drying on a wall in Leicester and youll get all of the from the SH saying that their paint is bluer and dries twice as quick

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 1:02 pm

  • i meant there not theyre at the start obviously. we have better grammer in the NH of course :):)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 1:03 pm

  • anonymous @2.03
I think you mean grammar :):) .. but I do agree with your point.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 1:54 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 12, 2009 7:48 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2009 11:03 pm

By Blogger Unknown, at June 13, 2009 7:04 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 13, 2009 8:32 pm

  • Haha these comments crack me up. Even when it comes to cheerleading the north hemisphere vs south hemisphere jabs come up. Sigh.

I agree with some that cheerleading is a bit of a joke in the context of a rugby game. But I don't really mind. Bit of harmless fun inbetween the harmful fun ;)

  • Seems like the marketing machine has taken over rugby too. I know, I know - that's how things are done now. It's about market share and consumption. Pandering to the lowest common denominator - you know, churning out generic fluff. I guess that wouldn't be so bad in and of itself, but there's a Machiavellian apathy to all this that is troubling; the sort that dehumanises children to "influentials" and whole swathes of people as "shares" of markets. It's little wonder that school students in predominantly Hispanic and African American US communities are up to 6.5 times more likely to be exposed to alcohol advertising according to a 2007 Equal Opportunities International report (by Stuart Roper and someone else I think, in case you guys want to look it up). I guess we've idly watched as rugby's become a cheap taxi for brand image. And as rugby itself becomes an economic commodity, and the elite level becomes an irreconcilably distinct strata, you've got to wonder how much the game loves you back.

Though, some of those girls are absolutely scorching.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 15, 2009 12:03 pm

  • nice vid, chicks are hot BUT they are not talented-> not that I care. They are all un-coordinated and ruitines are far from synchronized. yes sex sells, but rugby is still catching up to the U.S. with the selling points of halftime entertainment.

    my $0.02

    hahahahahaha....
like I'm going to say no to looking at some half naked ladies. The more the merrier.
Beer, half naked ladies, pies and rugby. Sounds great.... just need some jam doughnuts and a cup of tea afterwards to make it paradise.

By Anonymous Cheech, at June 26, 2009 4:16 pm

  • plus it takes "balls" (way of speaking) to dance around in a bikini in front of 30,000 ppl crowds... chapeau bas

By Anonymous luxi, at June 30, 2009 9:17 am

  • As a "yank" I gotta say though I'm all for hot half naked women the whole thing gets blown out of proportion, Ie the NFL. I'd hate to see rugby become another commercial a second sport. Seriously I can't watch that crap.

By Anonymous PK, at July 02, 2009 4:18 am

  • maybe the only female posting here? This is rubbish, I don't like it and I agree, this doesn't have a place at rugby..it doesn't fit..those girls look real cheap in my eyes...and they make rugby look cheap too. I love to watch rugby, but without the girls, thanks. And as a female, i won't like half naked men parading the pitch either... everything has a place and a time for something and this is no place for cheerleaders
