Gloucester and Bath go toe to toe at Kingsholm

Last weekend in the Guinness Premiership we saw Bath take on league leaders Gloucester in a derby match that turned out to be somewhat of a classic. Gloucester won 36-27 at Kingsholm, outscoring Bath by four tries to three in the thriller.

Winning coach Dean Ryan hailed both sides for their displays.

"I thought it was an outstanding game – and credit to everyone who took part in it. Of the games I've seen between Bath and Gloucester, that was right up there," said Ryan.

"There's a Six Nations going on – and that game went on underneath it. That's a tremendous credit to both clubs. And I think both clubs showed they are where they deserve to be – at the top end of the league.

"There were quick minds out there – from Bath as well as us – and a lot of the things that happened came from sharp thinking.

"When people think quickly, they find opportunities – and I thought everyone out there was on that level."

The level of intensity in the match also added to the spectacle.

"That was as big as the game here last year, it just had more points," said Ryan.
"For physicality, enterprise and ambition, I thought it had everything."

"That's as well as we've played for a while and I thought Carlos Spencer really pulled the strings."

  • Carlos Spencer, still one of the best players in the world
    From Argentina

  • I wasn't aware you could take players out when chasing after the ball. I know you can push and shove when you're shoulder to shoulder like, but jumping on a guy's back and taking him out of the race for the ball?

Oh well, looks like it was a very entertaining match. Great stuff.

  • Is it me or did Balshaw literally jump on Banahan?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 08, 2009 2:21 am

  • elliot .. yeah, I had another look at that too .. I think Banahan was starting to run across in front of Balshaw who then tried to go inside him and it all got messy .. I think the ref probably decided there was a bit going on both ways and let it go.
I was more surprised by the ref not playing advantage at the other end by blowing his whistle just as the Bath halfback takes the ball from the scrum about 5 metres from the line and runs towards a frail looking short-side defence. Just as well Bath scored from the tap by basically doing the same thing again.
And it's great to see Carlos Spencer still playing such good rugby.

  • can someone please explain to me how olly barkley isn't playing test rugby? even as an irishman i've to admit he's a class act

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 08, 2009 5:03 pm

  • he played in the test in nz over the summer and whilst few england players came back with reputations enhanced barkley just didnt look like he could cut it

  • 1. How can the commentators on english channels be so boring?
I understand know why I saw comments saying french commentators were exciting
    2. Don't did have slow motion on itv or the bbc??? incredible111
    3. Love the fat Banahan falling like a football player in the box, on the try! Funny

    Otherwise, great rugby!

  • I agree the commentary here is dull, but that's because it's the weird ITV highlights package. Stuart Barnes is ok on SKY, if a bit of a twat sometimes, but I don't think anybody could call Eddie Jones and Brian Moore on the BBC boring...

As a gloucester fan who goes regulary - most matches per season, i can easily say allen is far more potent in attack. The only thing which barfley offers as far as im concerned is a kicking game.

shame simbad got injured during that game for his 1st try - thats why he got the limp for the 2nd try.

KING CARLOS HAD A GR8 RUN AGAINST SALE/ IRISH - I CAN@T REMEMBER WHICH 1 BUT HE BEAT ABOUT 5/6 PLAYERS!!

  • who said rolling maul was dead!
    great round of premiership rugby!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 09, 2009 10:28 pm

  • that try when Banahan got pushed over should have been disallowed. Banahan was just using his shoulder and running infront of Balshaw, all perfectly legal. The thing you are not supposed to do is use your arms in a chase for the ball. I am amzed it was awarded

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 10, 2009 4:42 am

  • Oh yeah, sorry. Eddie Jones would be rubbish as a commentator.
