Alesana Tuilagi runs over Shane Horgan

As Leinster continue to paint Ireland a shade of blue following their Heineken Cup victory over Leicester on Saturday, we look back at one of the moments of the match as two big wingers went up against each other in a heavyweight contest that was emphatically one sided.

Shane Horgan was picked to start for Leinster with coach Michael Cheika knowing all too well that he'd be up against the power of the Samoan bulldozer Alesana Tuilagi.

Early in the match we saw Rocky Elsom storm over the top of Tuilagi, and not too long afterwards Horgan gave him a little shove over the touchline, which the powerhouse Tiger winger clearly didn't take too kindly to.

Horgan is a big unit himself, standing at 6ft4, he's one of the biggest international wings around. That didn't faze Tuilagi though, as later in the game he zeroed in on the Irishman, leaving him on his backside, wondering what day it was after this rampaging run.

Tuilagi is famous for those type of charges, but was also recently suspended for a bit of dirty play, returning for the final. He showed great sportsmanship and humility after this devastating run though, as he went to check if Horgan was okay. Or, did he..?

Great rugby all round, and just another high point in a fantastic final for the neutral.

  • I was absolutely delighted to see this. Horgan is such a stupid oaf, and he always does these niggly things that he doesn't get penalised for. Good man Tuilagi, and come on Irish rugby!

By Anonymous Hahaahaaaaha, at May 27, 2009 5:34 pm

  • i dont believe for a second that tuilagi was checkin on horgans health, i think it was more a "told you i'd bury you" tap on the head

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 5:38 pm

  • well said in the second comment..
    Horgan is some donkey!

  • toilet position from horgan,ur not goona stop tuilagi like that!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 5:44 pm

  • Yep...no way was he checking to see if Horgan was injured - he was checking to see if he HAD injured Horgan.
Commentator has to paint it rosy for the kids.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 5:47 pm

  • i agree, any rugby player would know that was a "we're even" smash, leinster fan here, but horgan got what he deserved, well done boys, cant wait for the lions

  • Definately NOT checking for horgans welfare... lol

By Anonymous Eric, at May 27, 2009 5:59 pm

  • How the hell does the commentator know if he's ok? Was he there?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 6:14 pm

  • more like
'how do u feel now little man'

are u alright would be more in football.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 6:20 pm

  • lol

    Horgan just deserved that charge

but i'm not sure that tap was malicious

By Blogger Flooz, at May 27, 2009 6:29 pm

  • i think he just got back at him in a far but rough way, thats what those little competitions with ur opposite number are about :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 6:45 pm

  • not far but fair

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 6:45 pm

  • typical arrogant "know it all" commentary from Stuart Barnes.

How on earth does he know what Tuilagi said?! Odds on he wasn't checking if Horgan was alright.

He is forever making sweeping statements like this (on TV + in print) despite not having a clue what he is going on about.

    Thanks for the vid RD

  • Tuilagi subsequently got smashed by Rocky... What goes around... He smacks a little of a one (albeit large) trick pony. In my view I think Horgan has more to offer as a winger.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 7:31 pm

  • To the above? What does Horgan have to offer? He takes ages to get to full speed, he has no step, he's an average kicker, tries are always scored down his wing. He thinks he's really strong but then he comes up against a stronger person and is left for dead. At least Tuilagi can bash people out of the way.

By Anonymous Horgan is so bad, at May 27, 2009 7:41 pm

  • agreed, you know what your getting with Tuilagi, but 9/10 times, he's still effective at gaining yards.
IMO he doest get used enough in the 10/12 channel, especially on second phase where he'd be really effective.
when the ball is put out wide he rarely has the pace to keep up with the slower wings in the premiership let alone the real speedsters.

By Anonymous Doz, at May 27, 2009 7:44 pm

  • if you watch this phase continue horgan gets up despite clearly being half knocked out and makes a critical tackle.

but why talk about rugby, this is the internet after all.

tuilagi is trying to rub it into shaggy's face, but who had the last laugh?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 7:56 pm

  • that aside, to be fair Tuilgi has improved and become a more all round winger.
I think when we talk about wingers who run over people, Alex is the closest to Lomu. It's just that these days the game has moved on.
Still when he gets to do, it's amazing to watch

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 10:05 pm

  • I think Tuilagi felt like "told ya beyatch!"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 10:18 pm

  • haha he obviously wasn't checking if he was okay.
he was just saying "told you the big samoan would get you! raaa!"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 10:45 pm

  • it think did very well to get up and make another tacle straiht after bein hit by the steem roller

a savage hit by the big man but fair play to horgan been a great player for years for ireland and leinster and for a lad only gettin his place back in the team he didn,do to bad

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 27, 2009 11:08 pm

  • So how is it any of you have any more an idea what Tuilagi was saying than the commentator? I should think a rugger would be much more likely to be concerned about another's welfare than a footballer...

By Anonymous Bill, at May 27, 2009 11:54 pm

  • haha, you could really tell that tuilagi wanted that hit! doesn't really matter what he said, they were even after that, that sorta stuff always happens with your opposite number, you always try to out do one another.

By Anonymous jones, at May 28, 2009 12:08 am

  • i don't agree with all the anti Horgan stuff. he's a really good player although, recently he's gotten much worse which makes me think he's past it. but defence down his wing was always great and he's scored rakes of tries for ireland and leinster

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 12:26 am

  • Sky commentators really talk some shite.

By Anonymous JJM, at May 28, 2009 12:49 am

  • Bill it's rugby not rugger.

    WhoTF calls it rugger except
    for the Eaton toffs

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 1:36 am

  • owwwcchhh!, wat goes around comes around! just deserved for horgan!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 2:36 am

  • People say shane williams is too small but clearly 6ft 4 STILL isnt big enough these days.

By Anonymous fazno, at May 28, 2009 2:57 am

  • ^^^^^ LMAO ^^^^^^

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 8:11 am

  • "if you watch this phase continue horgan gets up despite clearly being half knocked out and makes a critical tackle. "

    and he was clearly offside

But i agree, he's a good player, and i agree, he deserved taht smash

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 9:15 am

  • Horgan shoved him to make sure he got hands on the ball. Against Munster he was in a similar situation, didn't challenge for the ball in touch and Howlett took a quick one over his head resulting in a huge counter attack. So he's still learning.
    Tuilagi got proper payback though!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 9:59 am

  • This is hilarious all the leicester lunster and Munster fans getting there swipe in ....

"Horgan is such a stupid oaf, and he always does these niggly things that he doesn't get penalised for"

Get over it mate so does Neil Back, so does Quinlan yada yada part and parcel of the game.

"To the above? What does Horgan have to offer? He takes ages to get to full speed, he has no step, he's an average kicker, tries are always scored down his wing. He thinks he's really strong but then he comes up against a stronger person and is left for dead."

Horgan has played at the top level for a long long time, what has he got to offer???

Id say you werent saying that when he scored that try against England at croker, the guy has loads of international caps and has been a great servent to Leinster and Irish Rugby. Thats what he has to offer.

Tiuliaga ran through him, thats what Tuiliagi is there for. If my memory serves me right that was the only run Tuiliagi had for the whole game on Horgans wing.
    Go figure

By Blogger Kenny, at May 28, 2009 10:44 am

  • if i was tuilagi i wouldnt of been saying are you ok? which im pretty sure he never!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 11:06 am

  • of course that was'nt genuine haha
he was saying horgan push me again mate and get another walk over from me you ....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 11:21 am

  • I think Tuilagi is awesome. A FREAKIN MACHINE he is

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 12:35 pm

  • Still i bet Tuilage wanted the hit, and wanted to smash Hogan but in his expression when u look at him going over, i think he was indeed concerned. I mean he is a rough player but not an asshole being proud to injure someone!

Injuring people and being proud of it is Football Fan Style. Rugby is honest tough bone breaking tackles and after a match many pints of beer together.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 12:42 pm

  • STUPID STUPID SKY COMMENTATORS.

    hate th f*ckers.

checking if horgan is alright my arse

By Anonymous bD, at May 28, 2009 12:45 pm

  • now thats revenge time rugby style

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 12:56 pm

  • I bet Tuilagi just said: "in your face!" smiled and walked away...somtimes commentators seem to be retarded or a bit naive.

By Blogger Unknown, at May 28, 2009 1:03 pm

  • Stuart Barnes is a twat. Anyone here that is Irish is priveleged to have excellent rugby analysis on RTE, but it's delayed highlights, while Sky's bland bunch get the live show.
Tuilagi and Horgan are both one-dimensional, that's why Horgan got forced out of the national team.
And as for the pat, I'd say every 7 in the world has done that after hitting an outhalf with a nice early late tackle. What the game's all about.

By Anonymous Brick Shithouse, at May 28, 2009 1:39 pm

  • shame horgan you got whaat you deserved hahaha SAMOA CHOOOHOOOO hahaha..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 1:51 pm

  • Show of concern my ass, he was telling him that there was more to come!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 5:00 pm

  • if horgan had tackled tuilagi like that, leading with shoulder / elbow, he'd have been yellow carded, how come the player with the ball can do whatever he likes.

yeah but elsom got tuilagi more than once

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 28, 2009 8:50 pm

  • That last post is the most retarded thing i have ever read. I have lost brain cells thanks to reading it.

  • watch it in slow-mo - Can no one else see the fact that Tuilagi deliberately kneed Horgan in the chest there? horrific piece of dirty play, and there is no way he was "sportingly" checking on his health there...

Say what you want about either players ability but that was dirty play, and that was defiantly a "now we are even" comment from tuilagi...

By Blogger Unknown, at May 30, 2009 4:37 am

  • stuart barnes is such a dick. he always says what a player is thinking/saying as if it's fact. how in the hell does he know that he was being sympathetic to horgan afterards with that little tap on the shoulder? I disagree completely and hate stuart barnes even more - as a commentator and panelist, not necessarily as a person!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 30, 2009 11:52 am

  • No he didn't, he just drove his knees high to break the tackle, that is how you put someone on their arse. If this is horrific dirty play for you then maybe rugby isn't the game for you.

By Anonymous Jerry Collins, at May 30, 2009 11:55 am

  • There goes the samoan sidestep again... STRAIGHT AHEAD!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 30, 2009 8:15 pm

  • Normally i would argue with you Jerry Collins... but just in case you are the real Jerry Collins, i am not going risk it!

However, i hope we both agree that Tuilagi was not "concerned for horgans health" after the tackle... dirty or not.

By Blogger Unknown, at June 03, 2009 6:07 am

  • blah blah blah! Tuilagi 4 president!!! n horgan 4 janitor!!! Oopz!!! =)

By Blogger senpai, at June 26, 2009 6:27 pm

  • "this was a show of genuine concern"
HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU KNOW?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 25, 2009 6:22 pm

  • horgan is a twat, and was treated accoringly (like a speedhump)

He got the same treatment from that big AB number 8 sione lauaki when he tried to get tough with him a few years ago.

    horgan = soft.

    ha ha

By Anonymous alex, at October 02, 2009 10:12 am

  • To be fair he got up and made a good hit

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 06, 2009 6:47 pm

  • all you people slating horgan need to look a little closer to that match which they won!!!!look at horgans determination, skill and fitness in extra time, murphy had a 20yard head start on him, horgan chases him down, murphy off loads to tuilagi, horgan then tackles him, then turns over the ruck....
and the rest as they say is history.

By Blogger Ronan, at October 20, 2009 12:21 am

  • I left an anonymous because i dont have a user name. Great play by tuilagi and if e intended or not to see if horgan as ok does not matter horgan tiked him of so he better suffer the consequences.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2009 5:05 am

  • that will teach horgan for bein a twat
