Friday Funnies - Neil Best deals with the referee
Irish referee George Clancy had his hands full last weekend as he had the honour of refereeing the tempestuous European Challenge Cup final between the Northampton Saints and Bourgoin.
As featured throughout the week here on RD, the match was incident packed with Clancy having to dish out two yellow cards and a red as scuffles broke out at regular intervals.
He took a bit of criticism for the way he handled the fiery contest, and you could see that players on both sides were frustrated at some of the decisions at times.
Clancy got in flanker Neil Best’s way at one stage, to which Best didn’t take too kindly as he gave Clancy a shove out the way.
Note how he tossed the ball in his direction too, after the pass to him was called forward. Was it aimed at the player who dumped him to the ground, or at the ref himself? Either way, it was funny to see how he wasn’t too concerned about barging him out of his path.
A few minutes later, Clancy had no hesitation in yellow carding him for his part in a scuffle.

its allways a bit of a gamble for a ref, where to stand and where not

Definitely looks like Best chucked the ball towards the ref. Fair play, him giving a nice forearm shiver to the ref.

Disgraceful lack of respect towards the referee- interesting to note that things started to go to hell in a handcart discipline-wise after that

Still a joke that Best was binned when you look at what happened to him (specifically, his eye) during the yellow card incident.

i don't find it "friday funny" at all
just a lack of respect, yellow card
and it just give an other example that this referee was biased joke
if it has been a french player he would have been sin-binned

what an absolute animal, the big man needs to pull it together and get back in an ireland shirt. although ferris has taken his shirt both at ulster and ireland if he ever comes back! a more disciplined breed of animal

That is definitely not a lack of respect, nor a lack of discipline or anything else, Best is not French, remember ? If it had been a Bourgoin player I would totally advise the ref to give him a red card, those french bastards are so ugly, and violent, they should not be allowed to play rugby ! English (and Irish for that matter) players are so much more fair play, it was just a show of Best's angelness...
(For those who haven't noticed yet, this message was ironic... French players are not the only idiots out there, it is ridiculous to generalise things this way)

Disgraceful behaviour from Best
But then again, considering his previous it doesn't surprise me.

I don't know what you guys are all complaining about, but i thought that was a fair way to get back at the ref for not growing some balls and making the calls

When i started writing this i was thinking that I didnt see how that was a lack of respect. The ref has to make tough calls as to were to stand and he has to expect to be flattened if he makes the wrong call.
However, after thinking about myself in the situation im sure that I would have avoided hitting the ref, and im certain so would most pro players.

complete disrespect, not funny at all.
By Jon, at June 02, 2009 9:35 pm
Think it's a bit harsh saying it was disrespectful. That was a brilliant opportunity for an attacking play and the ref was poorly positioned and completely in the way! Ok the forearm may of been a bit excessive but any referee worth their weight wouldn't of been there in the first place. Just my opinion.
