The Barbarians defeat England at Twickenham
The Barbarians scored five tries as they defeated England 33-26 in an entertaining match at Twickenham on Saturday. The home side came back strongly in the second half, but fell short of victory.
Baa Baa’s hooker Schalk Brits was named Man of the Match as he showed the kind of form that made him a fan favourite at Newlands for years. He will join Saracens next season, but for now, cant wait to face Australia this weekend.
"It's a great experience playing for the Barbarians and to be able to face England and Australia in the space of a week is fantastic.
"It's still amazing that a group of players can come together for just a few weeks and then play such great rugby but when I look around the quality players in this squad, it doesn't surprise me."
Martin Corry and Josh Lewsey had memorable matches themselves, as it was both of their last games before hanging up their boots.
"Everything about it has been great - apart from last 20 minutes," Corry joked.
"It's been very special, the national anthem, the game... Looking back, everything about the day will put a smile on my face.
"The kids will remember this one forever as well as me. Having the family and my kids here today, it's been very special.
"It's very rare that you can choose the way you go and the manner you do it."
It wasn’t a great day for England, despite coming back nicely after falling behind early. They will need to regroup and improve as they face Argentina at Old Trafford this Saturday.

ian balshaw . . . . . offside for the first try!!!
By Lawday, at June 02, 2009 6:46 pm
that was a cheap way to score tries. at least the barbarians did it thru great open rugby on the day
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 7:03 pm
from what i seen
why didnt johnson do this in teh six nations!!!!
i thought they were brilliant seeming as they havnt gelled,, against a world class baa baa's whos also havnt gelled... very excited to see the future
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 7:10 pm
indeed , at least a good yard in front of lewsey at the time of the kick. right in front of the linesman too, not sure if its up to him to call the offside, but surely he couldve mentioned
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 7:19 pm
who exactly make up the barbarians??
Is it a world selection , or what??
By jacobo, at June 02, 2009 7:27 pm
No shame losing to a side with that many class players. That said we did look clueless at times and the lack of cohesion in the backs was a worry. Do wish that Johnno would use these games for some development and some flair.
As an aside, id love to watch a game down the pub with tindall but hes a god awful commentator lo;
By Simon, at June 02, 2009 7:39 pm
Baa baas completely outplayed england. It was a second string team but still a very good team.
For all the resources english rugby has at its disposal, they should be the best team in the world by miles.
Might still happen tho.

does anyone else feel that D'arc could have run in that try at 3:45 on his own
i can't see what was stopping him going though??

Schalk Brits is probably the most under-rated hooker in the world.
He's going to Saracens next year I think, guess hes given up playing for SA

---------------------------------
As far as I recall, there was alot of first caps or first starts dished out that day. We went to pieces at times with them. Imagine what it could have been with more inexperience. Johnno had the balance about right. But not good enough as a team against that quality.
Hope Hipkiss gets the 13 shirt though.

darcy is the best centre in the world!

England are gonna get crushed by argentina on the weekend.
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 9:00 pm
who was it who pussied out of the tackle on elsom at the end? Rubbish
And Delon with one of the best try saving tackles youll see! Keeping him from puttin it down was brilliant.
Also nice play from banahan for his. that was douggie howlett he barged out the way, no mug.
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 9:46 pm
Did Banahan get a kiss on the cheek after his try?
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 10:18 pm
Was that Tindal doing the commentary was it? I thought so but couldn't quite tell. I thought his calling all the England players by their nicknames was funny and when he was calling Martin Corry 'Cozza' at the end I couldn't stop laughing. Not realling appropriate considering it was his Twickenham send-off; I should have been crying tears of nostalgia not laughter...
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 10:46 pm
yep i though balshaw was offside too, as looked banahan, who also knocked on before scoring, it just came back of the defenders head.
on the previous try did the ball hit the ref, j marshall complained about something, like he always does.
great game though from baa baa's, england like to score those easy chip kick trys but you don't get 'em that easy with a well organised back line, like they tried so many times in 6N and just wasted run-able ball. do they lack confidence ??
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 10:52 pm
corry outran moody... how embarressing.. get steffon armitage in!!!
he deserves another shot big time
By Anonymous, at June 02, 2009 11:30 pm
gotta love the run from brits to set up balshaws second try, perfection, came from nowhere
By ed, at June 02, 2009 11:44 pm
Brits is great!

"And Delon with one of the best try saving tackles youll see! Keeping him from puttin it down was brilliant."
Hardly ive seen miles better first of all it was against a hooker he seemed to wait and wait it took him ages to get there and when he finally did he went high what an idiot he should of taking his legs.
great proformance form all the baa baa's doug howlet didnt seem to be involed much well judgeing by this video. Brits stole the show and deserved that try what a run i dont think any hooker in the world could do that!! But my sweet god Rocky Elsom is the best back row in the world any team would be blessed to have him!!what a player fearless out standing!!!!
Conor(another one)
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 2:09 am
BETSEN!!!
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 2:10 am
i agree. the tackle by armitage was average. great commitment but he could barely keep up with the hooker! oh well he got him in the end i spose.
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 7:16 am
"Hardly ive seen miles better..."
"the tackle by armitage was average."
-------
Really? You 'anonymi' have some pretty high expectations considering most tackles on the line still result in a try being scored.
Plus, more often than not, the defender (unfortunately) gives up the chase when he thinks the try is imminent.
I think it was a great effort by the fullback to get there. Yeah, he didn't have to do a lot since the big hooker's mass carried him on his back like a turtle into touch, but at least Armitage was able to pull him down just in time.
Anyways, class game - I'll be damned if Elsom isn't one of the greatest athletes in rugby; he's a monster.
By Touchdown the clown, at June 03, 2009 8:38 am
...right at 6:20, looks like Howlett's getting teabagged.
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 8:43 am
Go on Baa Baa's
By Chank, at June 03, 2009 9:18 am
Sweet backs play there first barbarians win in a long time bt well deserved Elsom was a beast as usual lol
By Leinster fan 4 life, at June 03, 2009 9:22 am
Unfortunately, for some strange reason, the game wasnt shown in Australia. Or if it was, I couldnt find it. Shows along the lines of The World's Strongest Man Or Celebrity Poker were scheduled instead. Ridiculous situation.
By Salmat Speech Solutions, at June 03, 2009 10:13 am
baabaas's always produce incredible stuff
England need to watch and learn
These baabaa's will may crush the all blacks
By Flooz, at June 03, 2009 10:31 am
'Hardly ive seen miles better first of all it was against a hooker he seemed to wait and wait it took him ages to get there and when he finally did he went high what an idiot he should of taking his legs.'
if hed have taken his legs brits momentum would have carried him over. by going high he was able to turn him over not allowing him to ground the ball.
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 11:02 am
and to the guy sayin delon could barely keep up, he had to make up a few yards as he was abit wider which he did and brits looed pretty quick there. no lumbering forward of old
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 11:05 am

1. "will" or "may", be brave and choose.
2. why, because they beat a mediocre English side? I don't understand your logic.
By highball, at June 03, 2009 11:24 am
Okay well player baa baas but that first try was MILES OFF SIDE! A good two meters in front of the kicker.
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2009 12:58 pm
Brits had a great game, look forward to seeing him in the GP next season. Good to see Betsen doing what he does best, that was a fearsome back 3!
Ok, so Goode got the chips over bu there is nothing else to the fat knacker, once teams have worked that out he's totally useless. England in desperate need of a a good 9/10 combo!
By nick s, at June 03, 2009 1:44 pm
And they will have a good 9/10 partnership.
Ellis/Care/Hodgeson/Simpson/Youngs
Flood/Cippers/Geraghty
All fine players. Simpson and Youngs need another season or two. And Flood, Cippers and Geraghty are injured, needs his pin out and just back from injury respectively.
By MadMax, at June 03, 2009 2:04 pm
first try wasnt that far offside but should have been noticeable to the lino right next to him
By Anonymous, at June 04, 2009 2:36 pm
is it just me, or does Schalk Brits look like the illegitimate son of Bruce Dickinson?
Note: I don't mean the Blue Oyster Cult "more cowbell" producer, but rather the Iron Maiden lead singer.
By cheyanqui, at June 04, 2009 3:17 pm
didn't get to see the game in the USA. Setanta (US Edition) didn't pick it up as far as I know.
Brits is indeed quality, and would love to see him get a shot in the Boks jumper.
However, it seems B. du Plessis has it locked down. Then again, I like BdP plays like a meathead. Is Brits that much worse than Bismarck on the set pieces?
Smit stays as hooker coverage in your 22-man squad because John Smit is John Smit.
I guess the problem in the end is some think that Brits is more of an impact player than an 80-minute guy like BdP is... Watching this video might dispel that idea.
By cheyanqui, at June 04, 2009 3:24 pm
"Then again, I like BdP plays like a meathead."
Should read:
"Then again, I THINK BdP plays like a meathead."
By cheyanqui, at June 04, 2009 3:24 pm
England still can't run the ball, haha.
By Anonymous, at June 04, 2009 6:51 pm
