Air New Zealand Cup - Rounds 9, 10, 11, & 12 - Tries Mix

Once again it's time to take a look at some of the best tries scored in the action packed Air New Zealand Cup, this time from rounds 9 to 12.

It's not always easy keeping up as it happens, so we've got this great compilation video which highlights some of the best moments from the past few weeks.

As you'll see, it's pretty much the Zac Guildford show, with guest appearances by Ben Smith and Israel Dagg. These are the new boys of New Zealand rugby, and you'll see exactly why the likes of flyers Guildford and Smith have been called up for the All Blacks end of year tour.

Guildford scored two hat-tricks in two weeks recently, so some of those tries are included, as well as great individual tries from Sam Whitelock (the galloping lock for Canterbury), Manawatu's Kurt Baker, and Counties Manakau's Tim Nanai Williams.

We've also thrown in some sights and sounds from the tournament, a huge hit to keep you interested, and a couple of pretty blondes. Enjoy.

Time: 05:19
Music: Knights of Cydonia by Muse
Try-scorers in order: Sean Maitland, Adam Thomson, Ben Smith, Alby Mathewson, Zac Guildford, Damien Fakafanua, Zac Guildford, Karne Hesketh, Tamati Ellison, Zac Guildford, Paul Perez,
Sam Whitelock, Kurt Baker, Zac Guildford, Mike Delaney, Zac Guildford, Tim Nanai Williams, Zac Guildford.

  • Watching this kind of video makes me understand again that the NH rugby is gonna be beaten...or will it?

By Anonymous Swissvinch, at October 27, 2009 8:57 am

  • Beautiful, I love watching the quality of the second and back rows handling + gas in NZ. Makes everything so much more expansive and fast paced. This is obvious I know, but having seen 3 dull Guinness Premiership games this season (not saying there aren't great games to be had in the GP, just the 3 I have been to this season were turkeys) this style of rugby is manna from the Gods.
And the blondes who love rugby, remind me of the quota points I need to emigrate to NZ!?

Still, we created the epic music in the video...which is about it. Can't wait for the autumn internationals!

  • Good to see some of Ben Smith! The competition for spots in the ABs over the next couple of years is gonna be huge, especially if the injury rate drops

  • I just want to say, i'm not sure Guilford is that great... He had one good indivual try... but the rest of his tries were all easy for him, all he had to do was run. I suppose you could say that he is always in the right place at the right time, which is good for a winger, but is he good one on ones??

We haven't seen enough of him in my opinion... yes he is good but is he as good as Rokocoko, Howlett, Gear, Sivivatu...

I'm not criticising him, but he's not ready yet in my opinion, later on he will defenetly be more than capable of being an All Black.

  • didnt see any dan carter?? is he injured again or just quite??

    By Anonymous creggs08, at October 27, 2009 1:23 pm

  • everytime there is a air new zealand cup try, does no-one think about how bad some of the defence is, it really bugs me. I am impressed with the amount of support though. Zac Guildford, how good is he, two of those tries where the fly-halves work.

By Anonymous Synical, at October 27, 2009 1:28 pm

  • I love it.. Try scorers; Zac Guilford.....Zac Guilford....Zac Guilford...Zac Guilford. The guy's on form to say the least.. Defo deserves his AB place....and that's from a Pom!! :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 27, 2009 2:05 pm

  • Synical, why even say that?
You watch a ten second bit of a game and say the defense is bad? It's a try video, very few tries come after good defense.
Watch any try video, people are missing tackles. It's how it works.

  • I want to buy that last girl a pint or two

By Blogger Unknown, at October 27, 2009 2:34 pm

  • Cheers Bill.

ArranR, with all due respect, Graeme Henry etc HAVE seen enough of Guildford to make that call. He's a killer finisher, who has an all-round game too. In fact from what I've heard, that's one of the main reasons for him being chosen ahead of Rokocoko etc.

By Anonymous Greiffel, at October 27, 2009 2:49 pm

  • Guildford sensational. Dagg, should be with the blacks in AIs. Love the thumbs up at the end, though she did eclipse another hot girl behind her.....slightly upsetting!!

By Blogger Alexander, at October 27, 2009 6:21 pm

  • i just don't think that guildford has that cutting edge to be successful in the autumn tests

By Anonymous Ed, at October 27, 2009 6:45 pm

  • You see a lot of offloads off the deck in NZ, which I think is a reflection that their back row aren't quite as quick at getting down and competing for the ball - in the NH, by the time you hit the deck you've normally got someone with their hands already on the ball.

    Just my 2c

By Anonymous HM, at October 27, 2009 7:08 pm

  • ^ hah! now I've heard it all

By Anonymous FrankyH, at October 27, 2009 8:09 pm

  • that's a great run by that canterbury lock.. now that's what you call a dummy! ZAc Guildfor looks to be on fire these days, can't wait to see him playing for the adult All Blacks... hope he doesn't wet his pants though

By Anonymous Joost, at October 27, 2009 8:10 pm

  • yea fair play to that lock - guaranteed to work that dummy, and it did!

One or two bad bits of defense, but not the defining thing here - thou compared to the highlights from SA a few weeks back, SA club rugby is on fire at the mo

(And yes, comparing the 'best of' to the 'best of' is to some extent valid)

(Tune worked in the end too, seemed a bit mad at first, but that unusual 70s electro tinged rock epic structure worked well - good to see the non play bits at the end - that also worked well.)

By Anonymous mise, at October 28, 2009 12:19 am

  • ive never seen a girl cock-block like that at the end, 5:32. hahaha

By Anonymous ToddTheClutchClever, at October 28, 2009 2:53 am

  • If you sat down and watched the whole game, you guys would see how stupid these accusations of bad defence are.
And inr egards to HM's theory about NH flankers being quicker, wtf?
Clearly the SH produces the better flankers, always has.
You know guys like Elsom, maccaw, brussow etc.

By Anonymous Bill, at October 28, 2009 3:00 am

  • RD could you please stop using the Daily motion posts??? Those of us with slower connections who have to let the vids play through and then replay them to watch them without the pauses can't use this setup. The Daily motion posts won't replay or even back up with out the pauses. It really sucks because by the posts I would have really enjoyed this vid.

    By Anonymous ned2or3, at October 28, 2009 3:09 am

  • great tries !!

no wonder zac guilford is in the NZ squad : hes got speed, agility... but he should put the ball under his right arm (ie. the arm wich is closest to the touchline in order to use the other arm to fend off opponents)

By Anonymous luxi, at October 28, 2009 2:14 pm

  • @ ned2or3 - Youtube blocks certain songs unfortunately, so this one would have been muted if kept on there. Anyway, try this link to download the source vid. Email me if it doesnt work. Cheers

  • Where are all Gears tries?

He only scored a double hattrick the other day and has scored 10 in 6 games or something crazy.

I can't see Guilford dominating, he doesn't look that quick to be honast and all his tries were pretty short range or running onto kicks.... The kid is talented, but maybe they rushed him in a bit early??

However, im always happy to be proven wrong :-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 29, 2009 2:25 am

  • HM said... etc etc. Just my 2c

I reckon that's worth not quite 1c at best, HM .. a bit of lateral thinking about the footy is great but in the end you've got to make sense .. the brutal reality is that SH flankers as named elsewhere on here, but let's just mention McCaw, Smith, Brussow etc, have proved to be exactly the opposite of what you suggest and lead the world in snaffling the ball at the breakdown. The players are off-loading from the ground because they try to keep the play moving as much as possible and even the best flankers in the game can't always stop them.

By Anonymous robert, at October 29, 2009 9:52 am

  • Anonymous, Gear has been dropped by the AB's. I think it's Guildford you're thinking of who scored two hatricks in two weeks, and leads the try scoring list for the AirNZCup.

By Anonymous Greiffel, at October 29, 2009 3:14 pm

  • Kiwi locks on the loose!!
