Another crazy rugby brawl in Romania

There’s unfortunately been another out of control fight in a Romanian rugby match, this time between CSU Arad and RCM Timisoara, resulting in three players being taken to hospital after the match.

It’s hard to say what exactly sparked it, but pretty much the whole team was involved in this mass brawl that spread across the field and included substitutes and coaches from both sides.

It started 20 minutes into the first half of the Central and Eastern European Rugby Cup match, held in the western city of Arad, Romania on Sunday

The manager of RCM, Danut Borzas, said that they had received threats before the match, which resulted in their players being punched and kicked after twenty minutes of rugby.

"We have three players in hospital. They were punched and thrown to the ground and then kicked," he said.

One player suffered head injuries, another had a broken nose and the third had several teeth knocked out.

The Romanian Rugby Federation has declined to comment as yet, but Borzas says he will be sending in a complaint, and probably to the International Rugby Federation too.

The match was won 42-16 by RCM Timisoara.

While this type of thing can happen anywhere in the world, something seems to be missing in the culture and minds of these players. Making threats before a match is ridiculous, and certainly not a part of rugby as we know it.

  • "The match was won 42-16 by RCM Timisoara." ...... So after that they actually played on? What has to happen for a match to get canceled over there??

the most incredible thing is that you seem proud of that! Proud to behave like an animal? ok...

  • While fights can and do happen in every country that plays rugby, have you played a Romanian team before? They are well known as violent and dirty players....it's like club rugby in France in the 1980s.

Romanians have none of that "hard but fair" ethose that you generally see in other rugby cultures. I am surpised they don't bring knives onto the pitch....it's just a matter of time until somoen gets killed.

I think there was one back in the 80s or so when a player broke his neck while playing, and died before an ambulance came, but they refused to allow a sub, and kept playing anyway.

I dont mind saying, id be scared to be on the same pitch as some of these guys. 6'5", 18 stone tongans fine (and this is at u16 level), but no way would I risk playing this lot.

  • Whats the deal with these Romainians? If they put as much focus on getting better at the game as they do with fight/intimidating each other they actually get somewhere.

Giving the game a bad name.

  • Looks like a Bloods and Crips showdown over there...

More like football hooligans than rugby players. 0:55, even the old man is getting into it.

Just ridiculous. I wonder how they plan on stamping out that sort of behavior.

  • That "gentlemen" aspect of rugby seems to have completely escaped some of the cultures into which the game has traveled.

  • I think it would be extremely interesting to watch a whole Romanian cub match (one in which a fight of this sort breaks out) from start to finish, not only to watch the fight and see what spurred it on, but to see how the standard of rugby is as well.

I'm not trying to talk like some arrogant bloke, as though I come from a country that is well known for its high rugby standards and that Romania isn't. But if these Romanian club rugby matches are gaining an international reputation for their fighting and only that... I can't see much of a reason for such teams to take part in the sport full stop... for Christ's sake you can see one teams (I THINK) coach take a cheap shot punch at an opposition player, its awful

  • I giggled a little bit initially but there's only one reaction to that nonsense which is hefty bans and fines (I don't know if its realistic to fine the clubs).

And ultimately if the Romanian Union can't react accordingly, their affiliation to IRB should seriously be called into question, if as seems to be the case that clip is the attitude prevailing towards the game over there.

  • I honestly do hate playing on the field with players with anger management problems.

By Blogger Don, at October 15, 2009 6:53 pm

  • well, someone do something about this. if the romanian rugby federation doesn't, the irb or fira should
