London Irish upset champions Leinster at home

Heineken Cup holders Leinster were stunned at home by London Irish on Friday, as they went down 12-9 in front of their loyal supporters at the RDS in Dublin.

Jonathan Sexton and Peter Hewat converted two penalties each before Ryan Lamb came on as a replacement and made his mark, putting the Exiles 9-6 in the lead.

Sexton levelled the scores with his third kick at goal, but a late penalty by Lamb, following an offside decision, proved the difference between the two sides as he coolly slotted the three points for the win.

"We've won a game in the back-yard of a very difficult place to come against the defending champions that are in good form," said London Irish coach Toby Booth.

"Of course, we were expecting a very difficult contest.

"We've snuck it at the end, and I think the enthusiasm with which the boys celebrated was purely out of respect for Leinster because they know how hard it is to come here and get anything.

"Part of the evolution of London Irish has been trying to be adaptable. Being able to win in different ways is all about your evolution as a team."

Leinster coach Michael Cheika admitted his side were not good enough on the day.

"We didn't play well on the ground. We had the opportunity to put a fair bit of play together at various moments but we weren't effective enough at ruck time.

"I think that was a really costly area of the game for us.

"We got a losing bonus point but the target was to get four and we didn't get it."

  • That was a waste of a last minute play from number 9....

  • He thought that a penalty was coming for the "high tackle" on Sexton which we can't see too closely on the video.

I'm not too shocked by this result though, London Irish are on great form, but I wouldn't be surprised either if Leinster go to the Madjeski and win there either.

  • Nice to see Lamb has got himself together and is playing some decent rugby. Real injection of pace into Irish once he came on.

Leinster seem to go into this game expecting a win and didn't show as much ambition I was expecting. Irish are on a roll though and are playing some decent rugby.

Reckon Leinster will be in the final 8 but will need to pull it together for the next match.

  • To be honest I don't know if Reddan did think it was a penalty. It was clear the ref wasn't giving a penalty and if you watch it, when Reddan kicks the ball he doesn't turn around to the ref at all. I know people will mainly disagree with that but I'm just not sure.

Classic Leinster by the way. They only have themselves to blame for a serious lack of ambition.

  • Why the F did Reddon kick it!? no creativity, wiltered under pressure. Clearly no penalty was going to be given. Stupid.

  • Leinster were all over them for most of the game but didnt convert their possession into points.

Definite high tackle at the end, Leinster will get them away as long as they can stop armitage lying infront of the ball and sort the lineout better.

  • Anonymous, if you don't care about the Heinekin cup or NH rugby, why the hell did you watch it in the first place? Why did you write a comment?

  • Kenny, sorry but no way was that a high tackle. Started below the shoulder.

  • leinster were all over them in the first half. london irish shaded the second. The only area where leinster lost out was in the lineout. I expect leinster to win away.

  • One of the best weekends of rugby ive seen in a long long time.
    Ospreys vs Leicester
    Northampton vs Munster
    Dragons vs Gloucester
Best games of the weekend, great stuff all round.

  • O'Driscoll is over-rated. Hurry up and retire.

  • they up their game for munster but have yet to perform against good opposition

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 12, 2009 5:30 pm

  • apart from Leicester, Wasps, Toulose, Harlequins, Ospreys, Blues,.....

Leinster lacked imagination and never turned possession in the first half in to points. Ref was quite suspect too but London Irish fully deserved the win and as a Leinster fan I congratulate them !

As for the comments on BOD, I thought he had a great game

  • If you look closely, Reddan looked at the referee after the 'high' tackle, and he saw him put his hands into the air to signal play on, and then he kicked it. So he didn't think he had advantage at all.
And they replayed the high tackle on TV and it wasn't high at all. He just smashed into his chest with such force that his head went flying back. The same thing happened to De Villiers against Northampton.
An awful match all round anyway.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at October 12, 2009 6:52 pm

  • "O'Driscoll is over-rated. Hurry up and retire."
Have you watched him play any matches this year?? World player of the year if he even turns up in november

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 12, 2009 8:07 pm

  • Leinster's backs to the wall now but I think they'll win 2 of their away games. Should've beaten Scarlets already without their big names, so it'll be interesting.

Yet again I agree with Kearney for tests, Reddan knew there was no advantage and just wanted to make sure they didn't lose, and in no way was that tackle high. BOD was Leinster's best player (2 weeks in a row), so I think that idiot should eat his words. He looks like he has shed even more weight than last season, while Darcy is going the opposite way. If anyone has seen a picture of Darcy when he made his debut in '99 WC, they wouldn't believe its the same guy, about 2 stone heavier then.

Munster to top their group denying others any losing BPs.

Great win Ulster, I thought the Nordies would be on here rubbing our faces in it, first Irish team to win HC, only 1 to win on W/E etc, etc...

Such a dumb comment I'm not surprised you have remained anonymous.

  • because a name on a forum makes a difference... leinster beat a harlequins side with no outhalf and leicester a week after a guinness final... also lost to wasps and castre two teams mid table in their leagues..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 13, 2009 12:29 pm

  • its a very long season and looking at the two squads leinster have by far the larger squad for the season and if, like last season, london irish lose both casey and kennedy then they will be found out because that is all they have...a good lineout.

Taking nothing away from a good win for them but like i said...its long hard season, that suits Leinster much more than it suits irish.

By Blogger Kenny, at October 13, 2009 2:28 pm

  • "leinster beat a harlequins side with no outhalf and leicester a week after a guinness final... also lost to wasps and castre two teams mid table in their leagues.."

And ...... then won the Heineken Cup....yep pretty crap team all right!!!!lol

Oh yeah and you forgot to put the word "cheating" before harlequins you anonymous tool!!!

By Blogger Kenny, at October 13, 2009 3:38 pm

  • To the person who wants BOD to retire, Sorry but the BOD has pledged alliegence with Ireland and has vowed to destroy all other mere teams in their path until 2011 RWC.
