Ma'a Nonu apologises for swearing during radio interview

All Black Ma’a Nonu found himself having to issue an apology earlier today after he swore repeatedly during a live radio interview directly after the Hurricanes win over the Chiefs on Saturday.

Nonu scored two tries on the night, but instead of being in the headlines this week for his great play, he’s had his voice spread all over the internet as fans are keen to hear what he had to say.

He’s since shown remorse, explaining that he was simply caught up in the moment after a frantic match. "It wasn't meant to be like that but it was a bit of intense emotions coming out. I was just trying to speak the truth – it's a shame it happened like that. It was a tough game and that's the way it came out," he said.

"I guess being a professional sportsman you have to be responsible for what you say. At the end of the day, it hurts a lot of people. I just want to apologise to all the fans out there and all the listeners."

The Hurricanes have reportedly punished him already, but the New Zealand Rugby Union will be meeting with him later in the week to discuss the offence.

The radio stations, Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport, are also in a bit of hot water and have received a formal complaint from the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

Bill Francis of Radio Network said that he’s had sportsman swear on air before, but this was not the norm as Nonu dropped the F-bomb repeatedly throughout the interview.

"I probably have not heard that extensive a number used in such a short space of time. I understand the heat of the battle where a player comes off the field, but they are also aware of their commitments," he said.

This video includes a news feature, the two tries that Nonu scored, and the full interview uncensored. If you have kids around, proceed with caution.

  • He sounded like a 5 year old at a kids party, hyped up on happy juice and sweets. Love the passion, but that swearing was out of control!

  • shouldn't swear live but the radio presenter should have told him off rather than laughing...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 12:04 am

  • I agree with Anonymous, Yes he was wrong to swear in the first place, but if the radio presenter had told him to stop, then he would've stopped, instead the guy starts laughing which probably made Ma'a think that he could carry on and was making a great story.
I've heard guys swear on tv and radio before, a quick apology afterwards, like Cipriani normally keeps the critters away.

  • The radio guy was egging him on it seemed like. Like others have stated, Nonu probably had little idea he wasn't allowed to swear on said radio station. The guys laughter seemed to condone it.

Now if the radio presenter let him know politely that he can't swear, I'm sure he'd have apologised for what would have been his blunder.

In short fuck the radio presenter and fuck the conservative media.

Jesus Christ, it's 2010. People offended by swearing need to do some serious growing up.

Don't tell me that it isn't used on a daily basis by all of us. Whoever is shocked by this is a moron! He didn't insult anyone, so what's the problem??

    Grow up!

  • Class Nonu, even though I think you're a bit of a dick.

    Awesome player, great game.

I'm sure you pre-teens complaining make more swears when fondling yourself.

  • Nonu's a great character.

No need to apologize to any of us, Ma'a. We still love ya.

  • RD, you have a link to an NRL commentator Brad "Freddie" Fittler commentating on Channel 9 with Andrew Voss and Wally Lewis, where he drops an F Bomb in a funny way.

I haven't seen it on the main part of your website. I know there are a lot of League haters who come on to this site but it is very amusing, especially Vossy's reaction. I think others will find it funny too (despite it being a League clip) and may not think of going to the link.

    The link is:

If this has appeared on the main part of RD, my apologies, I must have missed it.

By Blogger Anarchangel, at May 05, 2010 5:58 am

  • Don't they have a 5 second delay in New Zealand? It's a requirement for all live broadcasts here in the States, for this very reason. Also, that's what your station engineer is for, is to make sure those don't slip through. Sloppy production work by the radio crew, Nonu shouldn't be required to know this stuff, he's just a Rugby player. This is on the radio station not Nonu.

  • Well put Westerner.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 9:21 am

  • As if cussing isn't regularly heard on rugby matches. Watching the Leinster-Toulouse (or were it Munster-Biarritz.....) game, I heard "Get the fuck of him...you cunt!" It was the French feed, so that may be why, but whatever, even English feeds sometimes pick up cussing during rucks.

I agree that it's not Nonu's fault (though good on him for apologizing, I guess) - radio presenter/station engineer should've stopped it if they really cared.

By Anonymous slippery pete, at May 05, 2010 9:36 am

  • Yeah the radio guys shouldn't really have egged him on, but he's a professional and should behave that way. Did he think it was just a personal recording for youtube or something?? Radio is radio, and he should know better imo.

Having said that, the amount of times he managed to swear is funny as f*ck :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 12:38 pm

  • i know nonu is a big guy but the radio presenter should have controlled it, not encouraged it he has surely been fired.
not defending nonu he's obviously high
    "just play for the kids"
is that who you are efffing for too?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 2:16 pm

  • If he were interviewed on irish radio nobody would give a toss. Really stupid thing to have to apologize for

"Oh - think of the children...."

    gimme a break

By Blogger Litet Parlan, at May 05, 2010 3:07 pm

  • Who cares? As long as he plays good rugby and behaves on the field I don't care what he does outside the game.

If you don't want your children to listen to someone swearing then it's up to you as a parent to stop them from listening to this, not by making rules about people cursing on air.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 3:49 pm

  • ^ No, thats where you're wrong. How would parents know that it was going to happen??

If they knew that there would be swearing on that radio station, they wouldn't have it on while kids are present. That my friends is the point.

By Anonymous ffs, at May 05, 2010 4:20 pm

  • I know that we all think it's not a big deal, if for freedom of speech to work, we all implicitly agree to be bound by unwritten conventions.
And refrain from using strong language in public is one of them, so we don't encourage kids who are too young to tell right from wrong to pick up.

By Blogger vinniechan, at May 05, 2010 4:47 pm

  • 8 years old children already know swearing and most of them spend the day playing videogames where you kill people with a baseball bat.
its too late for them, but when ill have a kid I won't send him to school so he won't learn swearing from his friends and i will keep his hands tied so he won't be able to jerk off

By Anonymous idk, at May 05, 2010 4:55 pm

  • Guys, it's about knowing that it's WRONG to swear out of hand, not about actually knowing the words themselves. Sure some young kids have heard them, and know them, but they shouldnt go around saying them at school, in public etc. It's basic manners and etiquette. If they then hear a hero of their's doing it, it makes it seem right, which is where the problem comes into it.

Old fart much? Perhaps, but that's my opinion. I dont see how anyone can condone that. Sounded like it was deliberate almost, like he was having a laugh. In some ways I hope that's the case!

Swearing is fine, in the right time and place, that's all.

By Anonymous FrankyH, at May 05, 2010 5:08 pm

  • who is the reporter asking nonu, ian jones? should have said something than laughing

By Anonymous rosh, at May 05, 2010 5:27 pm

  • I FEEL HURT BY HIS USE OF LANGUAGE THAT REPRESENTS AN NATURAL ACT. BAN HIM NOW FOR THE CHILDRENS' SAKE

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2010 5:41 pm

  • not any worse than those Lions tour videos -- esp. Eddie O Sullivan use of the F word across multiple parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective etc.)

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at May 05, 2010 6:37 pm

  • I was watching this match, and Aaron Cruden put a kick straight out and shouted, very audibly 'Fuck'. I wondered if that would be on RD

By Anonymous ik, at May 05, 2010 7:37 pm

  • 'Little Chief said...
remeber the lions tour 2005. how many F word did o'connell and o'gaara bombarded after thwy were well beaten by the allblacks.'

Perhaps its your poor use of the english language, but i dont really see your point.....

Its not what he said, its where he said it, the lions tour swearing by eddie was in a changing room at the players....which was recorded and placed on a video/dvd to be bought and watched at the appropriate occasion....

this was on live radio, listened to by all, its just a case of not sending this world into a pit of despair...yes we all swear everyday, but i can tone my language if i am around children....and im not saying its nonus fault, i mean ofcourse there is a lot of blood pumping and general hype...but it shouldnt have been live...
    .

cipriani dropped the f'bomb on bbc tv and had to apologise...i dont see the big deal with the apology and chastising personally...

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at May 06, 2010 1:24 am

  • Guys, it's about knowing that it's WRONG to swear out of hand, not about actually knowing the words themselves.

    ...........

Who put you in charge of linguistics?

Some of you are beyond fucking prudish.

It's hilarious that you don't recognise how immature your position is.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2010 3:41 am

  • I'm against swearing on the pitch during a game but post game and off field is a different story. Free fuckin speech, they shouldn't be punishing him at all.

By Anonymous Ken, at May 06, 2010 4:02 am

  • Not having children, I could care less. I'm sure my position would be completely different if I had kids, though.

By Anonymous BR, at May 06, 2010 6:51 am

  • Oh my GOD! He said the F word! Miss! Nonu said the F word! Miss! Miss? What do you mean get over it?

By Anonymous Gman, at May 06, 2010 7:15 am

  • I think walking around without my pants on is cool too, but it doesn't mean I can do it in public or in the workplace, as that's not socially accepted. The same goes for swearing.

By Anonymous Benson, at May 06, 2010 10:33 am

  • Did anyone hear the ref drop the f-bomb in the Highlanders-Waratahs game the day before Nonu's rant?

He must have forgotten he was wired up and could be heard on live tv as after yet another collasped scrum he quiped 'o.k guys, enough fucking around'.

    By Anonymous Simon7, at May 06, 2010 11:16 am

  • Way too much is being made of this .. it was a minor social indiscretion not helped by the interviewer's slack attitude .. a quick apology is about right and let's all move on, sheesh!.

By Anonymous mike, at May 06, 2010 3:14 pm

  • ^^^^ hear hear!

By Anonymous Phil, at May 06, 2010 11:48 pm

  • Yes this ott, but then some of the guys positions above is ridiculous.....

you say 'it doesnt matter' 'if i had kids i wouldnt care' etc etc....

so if i yelled 'shit, cunt, fuck, wanker' infront of your kids so they actually learnt the word...(not necessarily the meaning) would you not care?

If i had kids and someone was swearing around them then i'd ask them to watch their language in front of my kids, and if that fails then the kids get to see daddy pummle some ignorant pleb!

This ofcourse is just hype and he was a little over excited and was egged on....ofcourse if the commentator had said 'wow you cant say that' he'd have apologised and toned his language down....so an apology is right and no big deal..but to think its just acceptable to walk round f'ing and blinding is just ridiculous....

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at May 07, 2010 12:59 am

  • that is hilarious and personally I reckon it shows a lot in terms of Nonu's passion. we all know how it feels to be fired up after a close game, so cut him some slack. dickhead commentator egged him on for the entertainment value. not what you expect from an All Black I guess, but boo hoo, there are worse crimes (a la Lauaki).

By Anonymous Muzza, at May 08, 2010 2:25 am

  • Muzza you miss the point.......ys ofcourse there are worse crimes, infact to think this is acceptable is a far worse crime, nonu knew he was in the wrong, he was just hyped up at the time....

so simple, an apology is fine, solves any problems!
