The Reds vs Highlanders brawl from the weekend

The Reds played the Highlanders in the last round of the Super 14 in a dead rubber that turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games of the weekend. It had it all, with the Quade Cooper show once again coming to town, and then this big punch-up that happened after an alleged eye-gouge from Jimmy Cowan.

The season ended on a high for the Reds as they beat the Highlanders 38-36 in what was a great game of rugby that went back and forth in the second half after the Reds had taken the early lead.

They once again had a man sent off the field though, after lock Van Humphries was carded for lashing out which basically started this mass brawl. It’s the eighth time they’ve had a player carded this season, causing concern for coach Ewen McKenzie.

"Why are we doing it more than anybody else? Is it youthful exuberance or stupidity or whatever. Eight yellow cards is 80 minutes of rugby without a player. So we've played one game a player short. And for every card is a try, if not more. Two against the Hurricanes," he said of their season, in which they finished an impressive fifth.

Cowan appeared to rake the face or headgear of Humphries, who retaliated, resulting in almost every player on the field getting involved. Not too many punches landed, but it is surprising (refreshing?) to see players go all out in the modern days of citings and TV analysis. Ironically though, nobody has been cited or suspended since.

"I'm not sure what happened there, we’ll have to have a look at the video," said McKenzie. "Anyone who knows Van Humphries knows he doesn’t come up swinging for no reason. In the end we got a yellow card and it cost us a try against us again.

"We're actually working on an analysis of the yellow cards in the competition, about us and how they fit in and what impact they have on the game because in a Super rugby match they are almost guaranteed tries for the opposition," he added.

Last week we featured a clip of Nathan White punching Al Baxter, with referee Steve Walsh taking no action. Walsh was once again involved in this incident, but he handled it well and simply sent off the guy who, in his view, threw the first punch. It’s got to be said that Walsh had a better game overall too, demanding far less TV time than usual.

If there’s time this week, I’ll try get a video up of the match highlights as there was plenty to be enjoyed in a ding dong battle that dished up an adequate helping of great tries.

  • "that's why they play rugby, not fighting..."

    love the Aussie commentators!

  • can't see any eye gouging there. YC well deserved anyways. Good call from what I saw, looked like Van Hamphries started it all.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 18, 2010 2:51 pm

  • Might be a gouge, might not, but Cowan has form as a dirty bugger, and he's definitely trying to scratch, or maybe pull the headguard off, so he deserves everything he gets. Unfortunately it was way too quick for the TJ to see in real time. I'd be tempted to say the movement was a reflex because they were falling over, but in that scenario, the reflex is to hold on to the guy above you, not jerk your elbow back.

  • That the Highlanders 8 gets away without a card or citing is amazing... maybe 5 punches thrown and most landed, when he wasn't involved in the original incident.

Otherwise though nice to see that the ref, officials, and players can still sort things out in a sensible, if vigorous, way

  • @anon

the thing the pissed Red #5 happens at 1:21. Left hand of Blue #9 is closed around Red 5's head with the fingers in the eye area and is pulled away as Blue #9 fell.

As for the Blue not getting a Yellow card, WTF.

  • hate Jimmy Cowan, dirty little prick.

By Anonymous Chris Boy, at May 18, 2010 3:30 pm

  • any form of eye gouge should be severley dealt with on the pitch, and any punches that landed were well deserved, a good old fashioned kicking is what that dirty wee prick deserved!

  • Cowen deserved a whack for what he did.

By Anonymous Tom, at May 19, 2010 12:37 am

  • If it was such a great match you should have displayed the highlights, no that stupid fight.

Thats why people that know nothing about rugby think this is what it is all about.

Lets concentrate more on the game itself than the stupidity than comer with it.

By Anonymous Juan, at May 19, 2010 12:42 am

  • Juan, fighting is interesting, it happens occaisonally in rugby, because it's such a physical game.
Most rugby fans like to watch the odd scrap on the pitch, it is interesting and entertaining.
i agree that they should show the highlights of this game, because Quade Cooper was incredible for the Reds in this one, scored and set up some amazing tries.

By Anonymous Tom, at May 19, 2010 1:31 am

  • "cowan just ripped his face", "eye gauge" - there's nothing more hilarious than biased oz commentators xD

By Anonymous opfazonk, at May 19, 2010 2:11 am

  • Best line (commentator):

"Any Mums out there that think soccer is safer doesn't have to worry, because absolutely no one got hurt in that fight...because they're hopeless..."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 2:58 am

  • are you going to put the highlights of the game up?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 3:05 am

  • ""cowan just ripped his face", "eye gauge" - there's nothing more hilarious than biased oz commentators xD"

Van Humphries said eye gouge, one commentator started to agree, but the second said he thought he just ripped his helmet.
Cowen clearly ripped his hands across the guys head, pretty dangerous to rake your fingers across someone's face, damn close to a gouge and Cowen deserved to have a lot more than one punch put on him.
He's lucky he didn't get suspended.
That kind of cheap crap is for cowards, and they deserve anything they get.

By Anonymous Tom, at May 19, 2010 3:31 am

  • Oh come on juan, i play rugby, i dont set out for a scrap...but they happen....

and as someone that enjoys watching a game, i love seeing a scuffle, especially from a comfortable armchair.....where you get to experience it almost first hand (great camera angles)...minus the bent conk at the end of it all....

Its like watching superbikes...heck i only watch the first 5-10 mins when they are all bunched up....you know if one falls you are guaranteed a great smash....otherwise its boring as hell!....

ofcourse we dont want to bring the game down, which is why its quite nice to see a french club game without a punch up every 5 mins (sorry frenchies but you have to admit your discipline a few years back wasnt exaaaactly top notch, much better now though!!!)

But any man that says he doesnt like seeing a scuffle on the pitch is a liar.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 3:50 am

  • @Chris Boy:
    "Dirty little prick"

In rugby we call that "halfback". Their three jobs are to put the ball into the scrum, clear the ball from the ruck, and be the most annoying f*ck on the pitch.

  • Saw this in a previous post, think it was (u-p)rick posting it, but im not sure, (saw the link posted above so i assumed it was him)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycG6Q46e7cE

Its about an eye gouge that blinded a guy, (real nasty!!!)

Not that this was an eye gouge in my opinion, just looked like he was gonna rip his scrumcap off...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 3:58 am

  • Anarchangel: Spot on!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 4:39 am

  • I also play rugby, Im from argentina and this happens a lot where I play, trust me, a lot.

I prefer that these stuff out o f the field. You are right, sometimes its fun to see, but if it was such a great match the highlights should be posted instead of that fight.

Personally I prefer this stuff out of the field,I would prefer to fight outside the field than in it.
Maybe because Im a fullback, piggies enjoy this sort of stuff much more.

By Anonymous Juan, at May 19, 2010 5:14 am

  • Aha! Juan, you've given yourself away, of course you don't like the scraps, you're a backline player! You'd be too busy looking after your hair and waiting for the next try scoring opportunity to want to get involved in the rough stuff.
    Forwards usually love that stuff.

By Anonymous Tom, at May 19, 2010 5:42 am

  • everytime anything hapens in rugby now days it's "EYE GOUGING".

Eye Gouging is rapidly becoming the new racism, it gets pulled out from no where when someone wants to defend themselves for doing something stupid.

Cowan was no where near his eye, and while he yanked his head it's not really even that malicious.

Don't get me wrong Cowan is a right little scrot sometimes but i think on this occasion, or at least to me, it seems like it was just a pure case of physics taking the man away from him.

What about that Quade Cooper though? amazing season.

    By Anonymous goodNumber10, at May 19, 2010 7:29 am

  • nah, Cowan was being a twit and deserved a punch to the head for that, you shouldn't rake your hands across someone's head.
I agree that it's not a gouge, but it is dodgy.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 19, 2010 7:46 am

  • @ Good Number10.....

First things first, how do you know a Flyhalf is a good one?

    He tells you!!

    @ Juan....

Yup, you must be a pretty boy nice smelling backline player......

WTF - Eye gauge, no eye gauge, why is he pulling at his face anyway.

And is it not in the rule book that the guy who retaliates is the first to be binned? Or as the rules changed

    WTF Stevo!

Lastly, whoever say they can not see Jimmy do something to that guys face, make a booking at your optometrist.

By Blogger Unknown, at May 19, 2010 9:06 am

  • good dust up,of course JC is in there starting it up and leaving it to someone else to cleap up, in this case Steven Setephano! nothing too terrible, adds a bit of fire. that was a great match, highlanders taking the lead before losing on the last play.

By Blogger Spartacus, at May 19, 2010 11:08 am

  • Well, I appreciate the video, i enjoyed the scrap, and i'd agree that gouge is the new 'racist.'

i.e a black guy and a white guy cant just have a fight, there has to be racism involved...

players on pitches cant just have a little scrap...there must have been an eye gouge!!!

I am sick of it, it looked like cowan was pulling his cap off....a typical little cock, and a typical ass hole thing to do, but hey, it happens, i have lost many a good scrum cap to some wanker that rips it off.....and hey its illegal to do that, so i'd probably get up and crack him one too....

Its not 'part' of the game, but it happens, and we cant all cry about it, we just have to have it dealt with, from what the ref saw yellow was right...
