Leinster and Edinburgh produce a classic at the RDS

Leinster hosted Edinburgh at the RDS this past weekend in what was a crucial match for the visitors as they aimed to squeeze into the Magners League semi finals. If you still don’t know the result, avoid the spoiler now by heading straight to the video.

Edinburgh, who needed a bonus point win to stand a chance of progressing to the final four, made a brave attempt to spoil the party as they took an early lead after two well taken first half tries, through fullback Jim Thompson and wing Mark Robertson.

Prop Cian Healey scored for the hosts though, as they came back into it through that try and some great kicking from flyhalf on the day, Isa Nacewa. He kicked seven out of seven shots at goal, as well as set up a try for Shane Horgan.

Jamie Heaslip was carded, as were two Edinburgh players, leaving them to play a period later in the game with only 13 men on the field. Leinster took advantage of that deficit as they scored through Stephen Keogh.

With time almost up and Edinburgh one point behind, flyhalf Phil Godman had his kick superbly charged down which led to a hack ahead by lock Nathan Hines, and a pick up and dive over from Rob Kearney.

The late surge meant the result in this one went to Leinster with a 37-28 final score. They then secured top spot on the table, securing home advantage for the semi finals in which they will meet Irish rivals Munster.

It was an exciting game for the neutral, with some nice tries scored an an exciting finish. It’s well worth checking out. Incidentally, if anyone fancies giving their opinion about the length of highlights such as these, please do. Do you have time to sit for seven minutes plus, or would you prefer just the tries and fewer replays?

  • Jeez you'd think Leinster just gave the tries to Edinburgh if you listened to that guy analysing stuff.

Great tries scored and a great match. Shame about the result for Edinburgh but they gave themselves a lot to do by losing to Connacht a few weeks back.

  • The longer, the better as far as I'am concerned.

  • You chose well to make this 7 mins long. Certainly not too long!! Use your discretion. It was great.

  • i like long, complete hightlights

  • Man that looked like a Super 14 match! In the good way.

That Robertson guy looks promising. Good to know that he is touring Argentina with Scotland.

In Robertson´s second try, Horgan went on the outside when his fullback was already covering the would be catcher. Silly error for a dumb guy that age.

Seven minute highlights is well okay for me, RD

  • Enormous offside by Kearny! He was 4mt in front of Nathan Hines!

How could the ref/tj miss that?!?!

Anyway I'm neutral so... great match!!
I only hope that Edinburgh wouldn't miss semifinal for 1 bonus pt!

  • highlight length is fine. Unlucky Edinburgh, grat game. Their 7 looks like a decent player. Seemed to be everywhere.

  • Well done Rugbydump on the Highlights!

Have to say, while a Glasgow fan, as a Scot in general this did kinda depress me a bit! To think with just a few minutes to go, not only were Edinburgh possible in the QF (although not sure how that would work out between them and Munster both on 55) but Glasgow were also on a home semi, and then once again we have a repeat of the Scotland Wales disaster with 2 yellow cards and 17 points conceded in the last few minutes!

What is it with Scottish teams?

Anyway, to the positives and some great tries by Edinburgh, showing the kind of attacking running rugby that was winning them most of their games at the start of the seaon before their recent collapse, and great to see Thomson and Robertson (what a step that guy has) showing again that they give the international side great hope for the future!

It just makes you wonder what might have been really though when you consider some of Edinburgh's recent capitulations!

Also, surprised there's so little talk about the legitimacy of some of the tries! Robertsons first was blatant crossing, while the pass for Horgan looked suspiciously forward and Kearney appeared well offside for his!

No matter though, as well as Edinburgh played i think this was probably the fairest result based on the seasons perfromances, and good luck to all 4 in the QF's, although i really hope Glasgow put Ospreys in their place! No place for cheats like them in rugby!

By Blogger Paul and Laura, at May 13, 2010 4:30 pm

  • Kearney was miles offside for the final try, i think the linesman was already ordering himself a silky black stout in a Dublin bar already. mmmmm

but what a great game to watch!

  • Great length for the highlights. Living in Mexico, I don't get the chance to see any rugby, so this is my main contact with what's happening in the rugby world.
    Please it coming, please.

  • great atmosphere at the game.there was only 11 000 ish at the game.nacewa did brilliant

  • I don't tend to watch the seven minute highlights, but I like that you put them up. I do like it when you put short highlights from the games though, like good runs and hard tackles. More of those please (they're also more fun to share with friends via facebook).

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 13, 2010 5:25 pm

  • Yeah Kearney was a mile in front of the kick. I had to watch it a few times to make sure I wasn't mistaken as it was so obvious! If that makes sense.

Looked like a good game though. Hats off to the Scots for pushing Leinster

By Anonymous FrankyH, at May 13, 2010 5:44 pm

  • some absolutely terrible refereeing decisions here. don't think it affected the result because they went both ways but still...

By Anonymous Chris Boy, at May 13, 2010 5:56 pm

  • 7min is great (when there are so many tries :-)
You could even have added the action leading to the yellow card I think...

    Thanks! I love RD!

  • The ref was shocking. Been useless in few matches. Analysis after d match showed he missed 2 obstructions for two of the edinburgh tries. Either way was a great match for a neutral. Good to see Scottish teams playing well. Leinster starting to falter a bit, seem bit tired. Not as strong as they were earlier in the season. Still good resolve to turn around a 14 point deficit

By Anonymous MCB, at May 13, 2010 7:25 pm

  • I agree, 7 mins highlights please

By Blogger MARCIANO, at May 13, 2010 7:39 pm

  • I would like if you included the sin binnings please. 7 - 10 mins is great for me.

    Thanks RD

  • Keep the highlights as long as possible. Great work!

By Blogger Ronan, at May 13, 2010 11:12 pm

  • How come Kearneys try wasn't given as offside? He was ahead of Hines when the ball was played.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 13, 2010 11:42 pm

  • definitely full blown highlights. this isn't just another "soccer" website. it's the best and most famous rugby highlights website out there.i second the "the longer the better" comment. dave

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 13, 2010 11:50 pm

  • longer the better. around 10mins

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2010 12:13 am

  • Pretty shocking defense tbh but made for an exciting game alrigt...

BTW RD defo the longer the highlights the better IMO..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2010 12:49 am

  • yep, longer highlights are the business!

Is that domonic ryan starting for leinster again? Impressive.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2010 1:22 am

  • There was a lot of comment on the refereeing after this one here in Ireland. Even thou Leinster won, it was noted how bad the ref was at catching really obvious things, things that led to three tries (at least!)

Nscewa at 10 was a bit of a revelation - i know they said he was a utility back, but he did really well. And, 7 out of 7 kicks!?!

    Re the length:
7 is fine, most of the time. ideally, it would be great to have 7 mins incl more forward play and with zero replays (we can just bring it back ourselves) but that'd be an ideal. Obviously some matches don't deserve 7mins, but 3mins is mostly just tires and kicks, and, for example, 'counter'rucking doesn't get a look in. I want to see 'counter'rucking in highlights.

Oh yea - get rid of most of the kicks from most highlights - that's one. I do not want to see a 22mt kick from 5 mt to the left. No.

And as for length and sharing on facebook - how short are your mates attention spans?!? I said how short are......

By Anonymous mise, at May 14, 2010 3:00 am

  • If you wanted to just go ahead and post the whole match I wouldn't mind. Rugby is a game of continuity; unlike other american sports where you can just show a series of isolated plays, I feel like a rugby match is best understood by showing crucial sequences of plays. I vote for long highlights.

By Blogger Joe Sheeran, at May 14, 2010 3:04 am

  • sequences. that's exactly it. that's why many kicks are pointless in clips, and we need more forward play, the kind that leads to back play.........

By Anonymous mise, at May 14, 2010 3:23 am

  • i like the long highlights as well! as someone who can't watch the entire matches, i'm always good for more rugby :)

By Blogger Jason Pan, at May 14, 2010 4:48 am

  • As far a lenghth of highlights goes if the match was good enough I don't care if they're over 10 mins long. In fact I'd prefer it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2010 5:10 am

  • Looks like it was a great match, but I have no doubt at all that if this were a S14 match half the comments would be criticizing the tackling. But what this game shows is that fast breakdown clearance and strong creative running can make even the best defence look silly. A point S14 fans have been making for years.

By Anonymous jackson, at May 14, 2010 7:29 am

  • Nacewa was a great no.10 at the Blues in Super14 before he moved up north.
Another vote for 7min highlights. And yes, remove the kicks, unless it's like right from the sideline with awesome-looking curves or the one to win the match.

    Great video.

By Blogger Jeroz, at May 14, 2010 9:54 am

  • Very well said Jackson. I couldn't agree more.

    Good game.

Regarding length of clip and kicks etc, if it's a big match (eg semi final) and people ask for highlights, but the end result is 12-6, then that's when kicks are important to be included, not so? So Sometimes it does make sense I guess.

This length is good though... That's what she said.

By Anonymous Shaft, at May 14, 2010 9:59 am

  • the last try is offside. kerney clearly in front of the kicker. BTW i like long.

By Anonymous hasif, at May 14, 2010 11:45 am

  • At 5.50 , a guy bang his own teammate for no reason . hahas .

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2010 2:09 pm

  • Jeroz, I wouldnt say nacewa was a great number 10...more of a utility back... Generally ok in most positions he played...

    Seemed like a great game....

RD I hope you have all your minions ready to help you with the highlights... for all the semis and finals coming up in the next few weeks... wahoooo!!!!

By Blogger Unknown, at May 14, 2010 7:54 pm

  • What a performance by both teams! Don't change anything, keep highlights like this.

By Anonymous Raggaduck, at May 15, 2010 6:05 am

  • The ref was poor all round, Kearney decision aside, two edinburgh tries involved blatent crossing and intereferring with would be tacklers... sinister stuff!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 15, 2010 9:16 am

  • @ Beatrootz, not exactly. All contributions are welcome though, and potential contributors should get in touch if they're keen to help out. It'll be pretty difficult otherwise, but as always, I'll give it my best shot. :)

By Blogger GMC, at May 15, 2010 1:46 pm

  • Man of the match, Nathan Hines, he should have got it for his chip ahead!

Thats the way second rows should play!!!

Kick it ahead....then sit back and relax because you know you have done the hard work!!! :)
