Danny Cipriani's great try for the Rebels against the Sharks

The Sharks beat the Rebels 34-32 in Melbourne on Friday night in what was a thrilling game that went down to the wire. One of the best tries on the night was this one scored by Danny Cipriani.

The Rebels flyhalf had a mixed game as he managed to score this great solo effort, as well as slot a few vital kicks, including one late in the match that could have put his side in a position to take the win following a Jarod Saffy try.

He did however have a few brain explosions, one in particular, where he single-handedly managed to gift the Sharks their bonus point try, scored by Meyer Bosman, which in the end meant the difference between the two sides.

While the Rebels will be disappointed with a loss after being in a position to win the game, Cipriani will no doubt reflect on what could have been, as aside from a few errors, he's looking impressive with his new side. This try showed that deceptive pace he has, as well as an eye for the gap as he glided through untouched from 60m out.

I mean, Ben Youngs only outplayed Will Genia twice in 2010 and Tom Croft was only heralded by the South African press as one of the best loose forwards in the world after the lions tour.

I hope people aren't getting riled up by the commentators. They're just Aussies and they tend to have a go at a lot of people. So when they're impressed, even if it's preceded by or following a sardonic comment, then they're typically genuinely impressed.

I myself (not a SHer), have never really given the guy much credit given that he had always seemed a bit of a pisaverde. But hey, if he can make it in Super Rugby (not jumping to any conclusions that he can just yet), then that's something he can stick up on his mantle.

One other thing, it looks like maybe after that fluff of a start, the Rebels are slowly, but surely, showing that they could be a decent Super Rugby team. Probably too early to say for sure, but in any case, it's good to see rugby prosper.

i remember a few years back reading an article that said he was one of the fastest over 40m in the england squad. Defo looks like that pace is back.

That was always the problem. But he is young and will get better. The Super 15 is a good learning ground. I am keen to see him against the Bulls.

As a SH fan, I don't think we have better athletes. I just think we are more efficiently trained and trained better from a younger age. Also, certain things are prioritized earlier (and sometimes not at all in NH rugby) such as offloading and these things become instinctive to most players.

And I don't think the gap between the national teams is as great as people say it is. NZ are indeed way ahead, but AUS and SA not so much.

As for club rugby, most of the NH is miles behind SH rugby. The quality of English rugby is poor. Only one team (Leicester) would have any chance of competing against an SH team. There are a few French, Irish and maybe one Welsh team too, but that's it.

I think the fact that the England squad needs to recruit players which simply are not English to compete shows the poor state of English rugby. England has the largest player base by far and still can't compete with SH teams. I really think England should stop using foreign players.

I am very pleased a natural talent is getting the chance to play. Cips has always been quick, he ain't no winger, but certainly dangerous enough with ball in hand to give those around him space.

You have to be careful making comments like this as if it's fact. While I agree with the rest of the post, I think this is a bit of a dangerous statement.

It's also something that can't be tested unless the proper governing bodies of rugby get their heads out their asses and give the people the expo. match that we all want! At the very least, a Super Rugby champs vs. HC champions would be a good start!

I agree generally that skillset and quality of rugby is better in the southern hemisphere. This is mostly down to my country loving bloody football! rugby is not even close to footballs popularity.

however, I do believe both leicester and saracens beat the springboks. Even if they were the second team it shows they can't be that bad.

it would be nice to see more concentration in the uk on skills from a younger age (i believe this is being encouraged now)

how does this always get into the sh/nh deabte! bad jammers! :)

im slowly coming through the ranks in the NH and i can say that we dont get strained as well as they do in the SH from an early age.
NZ have the weight groups instead of age groups dont they? which helps people develope skills etc which is why they have that head start IMO.

The Northern Hemisphere players for the Rebels were really good last night. The hooker and lock (both Welsh I think) had massive games, as did Lipman and Delve. Lipman has been the Rebels' best player so far - I realise he left England in disgrace, but he appears to be a loss to English rugby. Hard, fast, strong and good on the ground. Him and Saffy are looking good together for the Rebels.

Cipriani was good last night also, but he made two mistakes which cost the Rebels 2 tries - charge out of the line on one (too scared to tackle Alberts) and then threw a terrible pass over the deadball line straight to a Sharks player, although he was under pressure.

Cipriani was apparently in trouble in a bar recently and apparently did the old "Do you know who I am?" and then told the bouncer to google him - hopefully his arrogance doesn't destroy his obvious talent.

All the teams were test squads. Besides, I'm talking club vs. club.

I will give you guys this though: you are catching up quickly. I think it's down to the uptaking of new coaching methods, etc. similar to those of SH teams.

I watched Leinster in some of the Heineken Cup and I must say, they are doing a fantastic job. They would do well in Super 15. I really like how they are quick to use the youth compared to some other NH clubs.

Toulouse aren't as entertaining to watch but they are fantastic as well. I also enjoyed seeing Caucau back playing.

Greg Martin's comment was valid as Cipriani has spent the whole season so far passing or kicking. He did go on to praise Cipriani, highlighting that he had played it perfectly by passing the whole game and then chosing the perfect moment to run.

As for the South African league being the most difficult, I think that title belongs to the Kiwis, especially with the Highlanders appearing to be very competitive. The Chiefs are the only "easy beats" there, and they will smack a couple of teams this year, and in the Crusaders, Blues and Wellington, they have three genuine title contenders.

The Rebels and Force also seem to be more competitive than the Cheetahs and Lions (although they have shown promising signs).

Sam Norton Knight earned a Wallaby call up whilst playing Super Rugby, he couldn't even make the grade in the Magners League, let alone the English Prem, Top 14 or the HEC (and now plays for a Japanese club).

This was a good try, but it was not as spectacular as everyone makes out. It was soft on the Sharks part, who defended poorly in this match. Otherwise well done Cipriani, Flood is crap and Cipriani is the real deal. You deserve the England 10..

I was at the game supporting the Rebels. They blew it.
My favorite try was Saffy's. It nearly brought a tear to my eye to see an Australian team roll a maul for a try. Except of course there were only a couple of Aussies in that forward pack.
NH rugby is pretty boring but at least no-one in the NH puts a team on the park without a scrum. Scrmaging and forward play like mauling is something which is lacking in the Aussie skillset at least. Aussies can't complain that other codes are stealing athletes even Union is the 4th football code here. There is no other sport stealing all the strength athletes.

You could argue that were ahead of australia purely on the fact they get an injury in the forwards and then they get dominated! atm they only have 2 forwards of any real quality in ben robinson and pocock. elsom hasnt reached the heights he did when he was playing for leinster and stephen moore often goes missing during big games. Unless australia produce a decent 8 and lock pairing they will always get dominated upfront by the better teams!
But I have to admit the australia backline is pure class and only get letdown by a mediocre pack

as for the nh club vs sh club argument lots of players including rocky said that their is bigger hits in sh rugby but their is more intensity for 80 mins in nh club rugby. defense is weak in sh at club level! would love a finalist battle between hc and super 15! just to shut up some trolls!!! :)

I think one big problem in NH is that, clubs have to fight on multiple fronts on top 6Nations and autumn internationals so squad management and sterile rugby kick in.

You'd expect that south africa would have the most competitive conference considering they have roughly 150,000 more players to choose from than either new zealand and australia. Regardless they have 3 teams who have any real chance of winning the final, same as new zealand.

Wolfman, the hookerm and locks are Australian and NZers. The only Wleshman is Delve, and Lipman and Cipriani are the only other two NH players. There are three kiwis in the starting line-up. Other than that it's an all-aussie team.

And while Cipriani scored this try, which was good, he also lost the game almost single handedly for the Rebels by throwing a ridiculous pass to a Sharks player for the Sharks' winning try.

In regards to the whole NH/Sh thing, the Sh players have slightly better skills and the game is played at a higher pace down south. Other than that there's little difference.

To people suggesting players can't tackle in the S15, you are obviously wrong, but since it's been done before, no point going into it. It's clearly bullshit.

I see where the commentators are coming form. Having watched him play in the UK for years, this is what's so infuriating about Cipriani. He's obviously a really talented athlete and has the gas, but you watch him for 75 mins of a match and he looks like he wished he was somewhere else then he nonchalantly whips out a move like this.... The reality is if he focused he could be one of the top fly halfs. Although from seeing this it looks like his form is really improving, this seems a lot better than his last 12 months at Wasps. Hows his general play going?

I'm SH rugby fan but England are not the only international team which have one or two players that aren't English New Zealand do it too they're probably the worst culprits. How many NZ players are actually Tongan, Fijian, Samoan or from some other country? I certainly a lot more than than there non-NZ in your team than the English.

Chaz, that's the biggest misnomer in rugby.
NZ, the country, has more Islanders (Tongans, Samoans, Fijian etc.) than any other country in the world (including Tonga, Samoa and Fiji).
Of the current All Blacks I believe only two were born outside of NZ (and they came to the country when they were about 5 or 10).
It's the equivilant of saying England poached Monye from whatever country his parents are from. i.e. incredibly ignorant.

The truth is that there are actually many, many players playing for Tonga, Fiji and Samoa who were actually born in NZ. Far more than Island born players playing for NZ.

Anyway, to answer your question Nick, Cipriani has shown the occaisonal flash of brilliance (like this try) and is kicking very well. However his defence is not great, his passing is not really creating many attacking opportunities and he has the occaisonal brain snap - He lost this game for the Rebels, by throwing a suicidal pass from his own ten metre line to absolutley no one, which was dived on by a Sharks player for the winning try. i.e., he lost the game for the Rebels.

And Delve is doing ok. Not amazing, but solid enough. Lipman has tackled well.

The best player has probably been Gerrard though, he is playing very well at fullback.

As a Sharks fan, I have to admit this was great to watch. I think the fact that Danny is getting back on his feet and contributing successfully to a team environment speaks volumes against Martin Johnsons' man managment skills.... there is only one coach i dispise more than him....cant wait for Snor to go.

I've been at the Rebels matches and cipriani does attack the line, everyone knows he can run (he mowed fown KB in his first game).

And wellington (Aka the Hurricanes) look very far from a genuine title contender.

The point is Greg Martin is a twat who needs to be gagged or at least removed from fox-sports rugby commentary.
