Big Doug Howlett hit leads to Warwick try vs Sale

A packed Thomond Park witnessed a convincing win by Munster over the Sale Sharks by 37-14, ensuring them qualification for the knock out stages of the Heineken Cup.

Looking as impressive as ever, the six try victory shows that they’re once again going to be a difficult prospect to topple. They’ve now reached the knock out stages for the 11th successive season.

New Zealand winger Doug Howlett, ever popular with the fans, put in this fantastic hit on ex Natal Sharks center Rudi Kyle.

Howlett has made a number of impressive big hits in recent times, showing that as a wing, whether you’re big or small, you’re not just about finishing tries. Offensive defence can lead to tries as much as creative play can.

The ball was turned over shortly afterwards, and a few quick passes put Paul Warwick away in space to run in their sixth try.

  • Its not Howlett who created that try but Luke McAlister. That was the dumbest kick Ive ever seen him kick.

  • great hit, and great game from Munster

  • anyone else think that hodgson gifted them that win??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 17, 2009 11:38 pm

  • Yeah Howlett's hit did not so much lead to the try as it did merely precede the try.
The kick wasn't so bad when you look at the massive obstruction on both mcallister and the man to his left. What was up with that confusion too, did referee blow for something and a quick tap get taken, its hard to tell.

  • caucau's no.1 fan, cannot see how hodgson gifted them that try, reviewed the vid a couple of times, and dont think he was involved at all. its more mcalisters chip to nothing and follow up shoulder charge, and the poor alertness of the sale players that gifts the try. fine hit by dougie tho.

  • I wouldnt blame mcallister for anything, he was the only one trying anything, only one playing for pride! take him out of that team, and they would have been even worse off last nite i think, ive never seen an english quite so devastated as hodgson last nite, he had a fantastically horiible game! Very entertaining lol!!

why was peel not starting by the way?
and same with tait? is he injured or wat? i always thought he was good?

  • adedayo,

wasnt talking about this highlight alone, more the game in general. if the highlights come up on here you will see, he dropped a cross field kick which led to a try, then was put at full back and didnt make two tackles he needed to make. hes a professional player he needs to sort it out its crazy, maybe get in the gym and get stronger so hes more confident i dunno, he seems to hide from contact.

  • No Way,

I think the confusion was that normally when there is a high tackle the ref blows straight away. Owens just stuck his arm out for advantage while McAlister was saying it wasn't intentional which to be fair it wasn't but we just played on and scored. They forgot the rule that everyone is taught when they start rugby: play the whistle.

  • I'm french and I discover we don't play the same sport with the same rules.
Howlett's tackle here, neither the referee, nor the players say anything. The same tackle, last week in top 14, (see it there "Another two big hits from the Top 14" on this web site), the referee whistle, sin bin and watch the reaction of the coach
    !!!

  • caucau's no.1 fan, sha and No way are clearly clueless....first and foremost sale were outplayed in every department so for hodgson to ship the blame ia aload of bullsh*t. Lobbe on a skysports interview even admitted munster were lightyears ahead! Secondly for warwicks try after howletts hit its clear to see mcalistar caught howlett high and stoped playing, acknowledging he was wrong but the ref clearly played advantage and munster showing why the are the best team in europe played the whistle and were ruthless. Finally in relation to french teams playing under different rules clearly they aren't, alot of dangerous tackles are down to the referees interpretation.

  • ELV,
obviously you are the oracle on rugby, thats why your a world class pundit, o wait you leave comments on rugby dump, guess not then. everyones entitled to their opinion, not just you alone you tool.
obviously munster played better than sale, but if you drop one high ball which leads straight to a try and have two potential try saving tackles that you dont make it would usually mean you played a fairly important role in the outcome of the match.

  • ELV, do you really think Lobbe's going to say in an interview Hodgsons solely to blame, urm no. they always say that if they get comprehensively beaten, they always say that. Hodgsons flaws are pointed out by pundits, not by his own team

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 18, 2009 5:20 pm

  • it was a very entertaining game, munster always put the skarks on pressure.

Just a remark, i'm very surprised to see nigel owens "often" linked to munster important matchs (=victories) this season and last one (from the 1/4 to the final vs toulouse)
he seems to give them luck...

  • first of all, great hit by dougy howlett, though it didn't realy "lead" to the try, but did his catch of mcallister's kick.
i watched the whole match and it's quite interesting to see how howlett, who (correct me if i'm wrong) is the leading try scorer for the all blacks, does not score tries, but really plays an important role at the support.
about this mcallister kick: i think it could have gone either way, but well, doug catched it and thats it. and after all mcallister and lobbe where the only ones in this whole sharks team who fought out their hearts from the first to the last second.
and hodgson messed up the whole game for sale... i've never seen him like this...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 19, 2009 2:34 pm

  • hodgson is rubbish, I've mostly only seen him at international level, which to be fair is a step up, but he's always looked completely out of his depth to me. Very pedestrian fly half.

  • I hate how every big hit I see on this site has no sign of wrapping. I think the refs need to pick it up in the pros and make the players follow the rules (i.e. bring the man to ground safely). The Howlett just shoulder checked him. Hardly a tackle in my opinion.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2009 1:56 pm

  • AAAAHH!!!!!! I'm SOOO sick of this bullcrap about illegal tackles. You don't understand the rules, you must be new to rugby or something. Have you ever even played Badhit?
That was a great hit, it's not bloody soccer, it's a tough sport, people smash other people, take that away and you kill the sport. YOU SUCK for calling that an illegal hit. The people on this site who call every big tackle illegal ned to follow another sport seriously.
