Leinster knock champions Munster out of the Heineken Cup - Montage

Leinster shunned their underdog status as they convincingly beat Munster 25-6 in the Heineken Cup Semi Final at Croke Park on Saturday.

They avenged their 30-6 semi-final mauling by Munster in 2006 as they defied the odds to record a famous win over their arch rivals in front of 82 000 fans.

Brian O’Driscoll received the Man of the Match award, but was humble in acceptance as the Leinster pack were immense on the day.

"I'll certainly accept it on behalf of them," he added. "They set the platform for us to get our tries.

"Games are won and lost at ruck time. The speed of ball is critical.

"We managed to get some quick ball ourselves when we were going forward and managed to slow them down which was exactly as we wanted it.

“We've lost twice to Munster this season as well so we really felt we owed them one," he said.

"People had questioned our integrity, our pride, our passion, but we produced a big passionate performance today."

We’ve got a short montage from the game for you, but will try get full highlights up soon too.

  • A fanstastic day of rugby.
Kudos to both teams from a neutral frenchman. They showed us today one of the best levels of rugby I have ever seen.
Rocky Awesome and GOD were unbelievable.
Now tome for a big Guinness. CHEERS MATES

  • This is why the Heineken up is such a great competition. Every year it throws up shocks like this and showcases teams with guts and talent that were written off before the first whistle blew. Good luck to Leinster in the final, it would be great if they won it.

I bet anything if Munster had won that game Joe feckin Murphy would be in quick as a flash saying how great they were.

Go back to your farm Joe, the boys in blue gave ur team a right pasting and a lesson in how to turn defence into attack.

BOD with another intercept, right place at the right time.

Brillaint game and delighted for all the Leinster fans who stuck with their team through the difficult times and didnt switch to Munster fans just cause Munster were winning everything.

If i had the choice id take giving Munster a hammering in the heineken Cup anyday over lsing home and away in the Magners league.

  • I'm just happy cause O'Callaghan lost and sorry but I couldn't see the entire match, was BOD man of the match?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 12:07 am

  • bit of a joke from munster....fair play to leinster though...serious defence....BOD wasnt man of the match though....he done about 5 things in the whole match and then scored the try....should of gone to someone like rocky elmson or even sexton when he came on lol.....and in all honesty....if contopomi was any good and being a doctor he would of fixed himself up for the second half lmao

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 12:07 am

  • Rocky would have pushed him v cloase D'arcy too.

D'arcy would have been perfect for the summer tour - unlucky with the time it took his injury to heal.

Overall maybe BOD was MOTM, but rocky, d'arcy and maybe even a few others were worth it too (cian healy, isa nacewa)

Munster must have got a bit Lion kinged...waaay too much talk about that upcoming summer tour....

    D'arcy shud travel

  • Bod's defence was immense today, excellent kicking, good at breakdown, some nice breaks and some nice passes.....

    BUT

Elsom or Jennings probably deserved it more.

Hard luck Munster, that even includes you Joe Murphy..... but do learn to spell in future.

One of the most intense and physical games of rugby you will ever see.

And from what I'm getting, GO ROCKY! Doing Australia proud :P

  • I didn't see the game (how could I in french Canada...). However I gotta say I love the irony that I saw in the intercept in this little video. I mean BOD intercepting a pass for O'Connell is really interesting when you think about the Lions captaincy. Still two incredibles players.

  • Well done Leinster. Completely outplayed us and dominated the match. Hope ye do it in the final and keep all the trophies in Ireland.

  • How many thought Munster had already won the Heineken Cup, after their QF display against the Ospreys, but hey it is knock-out rugby.

  • what a great game!

By Anonymous opfazonk, at May 03, 2009 12:51 am

  • As a Connaught man I have to say what a great spectacle the game was. Munster seemed to think they had the game wrapped up from the start and lacked that intensity that we have come to know from them. Mafi seemed to be there only player that had a notable performance. Leinster had a string of players that could have been man of the match, D'arcy, Nacewa,BOD,Cullen... but should probably have been Rocky. He was outstanding- just hope they can hold onto him for next season. Got Leinster at 6-1 before the match + everyone said I was mad!!! Tink the fact that I had sold 2 Final tickets to a munster fan an hour earlier showed me there mindset!!

By Anonymous Mark Keane, at May 03, 2009 12:57 am

  • John Hayes you might want to re-read that comment you replied to before deciding who the fucktard is!
Don't imagine the man himself would be impressed at being asscociated with that comment.

No Lions injured, but Kearney is ill, Quinlan should be cited and O'Gara was shit- not a great match from the tourists point of view!

    By Anonymous 1314spirit, at May 03, 2009 1:01 am

  • fuckkkin ballsss!
Have to say - killed throughout the park:(

By Anonymous Brennie, at May 03, 2009 1:03 am

  • The pass was meant for O'Connell - who's the fucktard now?

Most Munster fans have reacted very graciously but the others need to just accept they lost.

I got called a "fat cunt" by several Munster fans after the match - in a very aggressive way. Not nice stuff, very bitter. A bit threatening.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 1:16 am

  • munster tried to play the same game as they did against ospreys but leinster did there homework on us! fair juce to them! N too everyone out there who says munsters taught they had the heineken cup wrapped up from the very start ?? your all wrong! i was there and every single munster fan and player knew that it wasnt gonna be easy and it wasnt!
i am a huge munster supporter and pretty disspointed with munster display espesh ronan o gara the man is too over rated

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 1:44 am

  • Quinlan should be staring down the face of a long ban come Monday for gouging. A heinous crime with no mitigation. Also, did anyone else pick up on O'Connell having a dig at a players eyes in the first 10 mins? It was shown on one reply and then skipped over.

    Bad drills, big man.

O'Callahan was played off the park.

By Blogger FTT, at May 03, 2009 2:02 am

  • o gara had a shocker any pressure completely falls apart any south africans watching this would have sat there with big smiles on there chops.
see mafi's face he looks like he had gone 2 rounds with the pac man
    well played leinster brilliant game
rocky was a rugby god for 80 mins should have got man of match
way to much pick and drive again from munster save it for the rainy days guys

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 8:46 am

  • its always beautiful to see munster gettin put on there arses. this may shut up the munster fans. rocky deserved man of the match

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 10:27 am

  • The only Munster player to truly play was Mafi...He drove into the Leinster mid field time after time and made contless yards..Earls played well too...

Rocky Elsom put in some absolutley tremendous hits especially the try saving on in the first half which was a cracker...

A great game it was and it was Leinsters defense, particularly at the breakdown which won the game for them..

By Anonymous themull, at May 03, 2009 12:34 pm

  • Great match, so many sub-plots before and now so many talking points after.
Quinlan was gouging Cullen, will be in trouble. O'Connell was semi-gouging Horgaan at that fight between Earls and Cullen I think it was.
Anyone else think that both the passes, first O'Driscoll to Nacewa then Nacewa to D'Arcy were miles forward? I do, we were a bit fortunate there.
And Elsom ws a mile offside when he made that try-saver on Ian Dowling, should have been a yellow and a penalty try. Cracking hit though. This coming from a Leinster fan by the way.
And finally, well done to Jonny Sexton, the best Irish out-half on that pitch by a country mile.

Him and Shane Jennings both went to my school :)

By Anonymous Nonu, at May 03, 2009 12:46 pm

  • good luck to leinster in the final!as a munster man i'm dissapointed we got leinster in the semi,as irish teams are the only teams who beat us regularly!but leinster really did deserve it on the day.outstanding defence, and titanic in the contact area.it would've been nice to see rocky elsom get MOTM.he's been consistently brilliant for leinster!but then again so has BOD

munster need to take a long hard look at themselves after this.i think new players are definitely needed in certain positions.an out and out full back, props, and a fly half who will bring something different.bull and ROG aren't getting any younger

By Anonymous Mark, at May 03, 2009 12:50 pm

  • Wouldn't necessarily agree with the comments appearing in support of Mafi - both he and O'Gara became predictable. Mafi never offloaded (the space created by the three Leinster tacklers on him was never utilised) and O'Gara kept on throwing skip passes (read like a book by O'Driscoll).

As George Hook said, in rugby of all sports it's very hard to beat a team three times in a row - and fair dues to Leinster, they got it right, even with Contepomi and Fitzgerald limping off with injuries.

Have not seen Munster not show up like that for a long long time, biggest testament to that would be the fact that come the second half, the only thing us Munster supporters had to cheer about was when Leinster were giving away penalties to Munster (one of which Warwick failed to find touch with)!

If Munster were going to come back at Leinster, it had to've been them that scored after half time, not Fitzgerald. Don't know why everyone's ragging on O'Callaghan, he outplayed O'Connell, and along with Howlett was the best Munster had to offer yesterday.

All the best to Leinster, I just hope they didn't play their final yesterday!

By Blogger Der Tierarzt, at May 03, 2009 12:56 pm

  • I think the lack of game exposure for Stringer had a huge part in the down fall of Munster, he was clearly very rusty.
Stuart Barnes was right that Rocky Elsom was individually the best player on park, but Brian O'Driscoll - everything he did was so right - he was kicking and chipping putting the ball behind the gain line, drawing defenders, forcing turn overs.
I've never seen such a comprehensive display of rugby by one player.

By Blogger vinniechan, at May 03, 2009 1:21 pm

  • Very well done to leinster, i really enjoyed the game! Great year it has been for irish rugby eh..
I just hope we (the blues) can meet you in the final and win another trophy for wales ;D

  • Did anyone else see Quinlan blatently gouging Cullen?
His face after the game was covered in scratch marks..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 1:33 pm

  • joe murphy you cycnical munster loser give credit to leinster the played fantastic and we are going to win the final!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 1:46 pm

  • Joe murphy piss off back 2 da south your a sore loser and should recognise that leinster completely outplayed munster.
Quinlan should be suspended for gouging unacceptable.
Rog didnt turn up and ROCKY was unreal

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 1:58 pm

  • thank you leinster!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 2:12 pm

  • Well done to leinster, they were the better team on the day, and i sure hope they manage to produce such a performance in edinburgh, the way they were playing yesterday i dont think anyone could have stopped them
ill be cheering them on anyway and i hope conteponi will be back
cause johnny sexton is a pompus prick....sorry but i hate him haha

anyway i think the munster boys will have to look at themselves hard before they put on their next red jersey....and im talking about the lions one, hopefully quinny will be there but doubtful from the clips ive seen

one last thing, ROG totally messed up gameplan wise, tried to play through the centre, would work against inexperienced centres but darcy and BOD are prob one of the most experienced centre partners in world rugby

and Elsom was unreal!!...but we cant say leinster didnt get the rub of green, u need it to win a rugby game though, but noway did elsom get behind the hindmost foot of that ruck in his tackle on dowling...but what a tackle!

By Anonymous sad munsterman, but cmon leinster in the final!, at May 03, 2009 2:25 pm

  • pass to earls from mafi - forward. Elsom clearly off-side on dowling. Pass from Nacegwa to D'Arcy - forward...but you could pick out any amount of individual moments from a game that wouldn't in themselves decide the match and didn't decide this one. Ownes gave more than a couple of marginal calls in very good positions to Munster.

Leinster deserved the win, and the margin - completely reflective of the game.

Great to see support from Munster people for Leinster in the final - that's the kind of Munster supporter we have come to know and respect.

  • Wouldn't mind seeing highlights of the game, rather than a montage.
Not that I have anything against montages.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 3:53 pm

  • i thought mafi was immense.... real good player

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2009 7:14 pm

  • I must say it was a shame to see that the two best munster players werent even from this hemisphere!

o gara kinda disappeared, o callaghan showed why mcik o driscoll still needs to play more often. flannery had a decent day hookin, bar that the back was poor, quinlan doesnt deserve to go to south africa now.

Leinster played amazingly, elsom was MOTM i think.

a few questionable non call on some forward passes and rocky was a mile offside tackling dowling, but thats not leinsters fault and you cant do the match over.

    best of luck to leinster!

By Anonymous jonesy, at May 03, 2009 9:51 pm

  • I think that image of O'Driscoll intercepting right in front of O'Connell was a microcosm of what great rugby is all about, two gladiators giving it all. Unlucky Munster, I really thought it was year, but Leinster played them of the pitch. O'Connell still the right choice for captain thou.

By Anonymous Doogle O'Manahan, at May 03, 2009 9:55 pm

  • bad day for munster, Leinster took their chances well, but we didnt get a bounce of a ball all day long.

Fair play to leinster, they have had a chip on their shoulder for a long time now but they played as well as i have ever seen, and what made the difference was that they rarely gave up a scoring chance to munster even though we were in their half more often then not.

Very frustrating game from a Munster perspective but there you have it Heineken Cup Rugby at its best.

To all other Munster guys, dont be sour and lower your standards to that of football remember its rugby

By Anonymous Patron, at May 03, 2009 10:05 pm

  • your little lions team is going to get smashed

Oconnel should not be captain and has already lost the respect of his team mates - the comment re the players eyes is spot on - no interest in listening to him

there is dissension in your ranks already

  • Jonesy give me a break. You're saying that Munster rely on their SH players? Obviously Elsom, Contepomi, and Nacewa don't count then. And I've come to realise, this isn't the be-all and end-all of Munster rugby. This is one bad game in a season where they were the best club in the world. And Leinster had one great game in a season where they were really poor. I'm not going to buy into this Leinster domination of Europe for the next few years thing. Fair play to them though. Bring the cup back to Ireland now.

By Anonymous Cojimbo, at May 04, 2009 3:51 pm

  • bout time they beat munster! fools!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 04, 2009 4:19 pm

  • ...actually a little disappointed in this match. Not just at the lack of creativity and movement in the Munster game, but the general staleness of it.

There was a period of a few minutes where Munster got quick ball and were running all over the field (albeit into Leinster defense) where some good, fast rugby was being played. Other than that, Leinster were the only exciting players on that pitch for the most part.

...oh, and yeah, it wasn't just Mafi that did well. Howlett made some good runs for the team in red, as well....the much-touted pack, despite making good ground, ultimately kept the ball too long and turned it over well-nigh every goddamned time.
