Currie Cup best tries mix - Rounds 12, 13 & 14

The Currie Cup has now reached the Semi Final stage, with the top four sides in South African provincial rugby going head to head this weekend for a place in the final of the longest running domestic rugby competition in the world.

It's been a few weeks since we've posted highlights from the tournament, so today we've got a compilation of some of the best tries scored over the last three rounds.

After 14 matches each, the top four are the Natal Sharks, Western Province, the Blue Bulls, and Freestate, who squeezed in ahead of the Griquas, who were the early front runners, despite being a traditionally smaller union.

So the Sharks will host the Cheetahs in Durban on Saturday, and the Blue Bulls will travel to Newlands in Cape Town to face Western Province.

This selection of tries features a bit of the best from all sides involved in the Semis, and others. We start with that classic try from Fabian Juries, and also include another two great moments from the Sevens flyer.

Another stand out is a superb try by runaway train Tiaan Liebenberg for Western Province against Boland. Anyone who's seen him play (he was at Toulon last season incidentally) will know that he's one of the hardest running hookers in the game. Great stuff from the big guy.

The table topping Sharks scored a few great tries too, with Ruan Pienaar, hooker Craig Burden, and nuber eight Ryan Kankowski all finishing off neat team efforts. The last try for Kankowski was made by the unstoppable Jean Deysel, who as usual, swats off tacklers like flies.

One of the best tries though was scored by Griquas centre Barry Geel, who got on the end of a brilliant move, fumbled, but then regathered brilliantly.

Enjoy the tries, and the Semis this weekend.

  • Not many bulls tries...

You can see why the Springboks are the #1 side in the world, look at that talent to pick from, amazing. Us Welsh have been outdone sir, us Welsh have been outdone...

  • The handling and passing out of the tackle is insane in these clips. Is there only 2 weeks left?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2009 12:56 pm

  • Loving the currie cup this year!!

    Cmon CHEETAHS!!!!!

Sarel pretorius (griquas scrumhalf) has been great all season btw!!

  • Along with Top 14, these are the highlights that I love most on RD. Thanks again !

  • What am I supposed to be looking at at 4:56?

By Anonymous Phil, at October 15, 2009 1:14 pm

  • Cheis, I couldn't agree more. Makes me wonder if he'll get snapped up by a bigger province soon, or stick around where he seems to be clicking.

By Anonymous Greiffel, at October 15, 2009 1:14 pm

  • Incredible standard of rugby, a joy to watch.

By Anonymous Phil, at October 15, 2009 1:49 pm

  • Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous rugby. The Currie Cup final is going to be an absolute WAR ! GO PROVINCE !

By Anonymous Capy, at October 15, 2009 2:19 pm

  • Some phenomenal skills on show there. The wee flick passes, great angles of running, turns of pace from big forwards as well as backs, and some lovely little kicks. Rugby at its best, and a joy to watch.

  • electrifying stuff

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2009 2:41 pm

  • Half hearted defence sums this competition up.
I'd much rather watch an all out GP war.

By Anonymous ElTigre, at October 15, 2009 3:21 pm

  • ElTigre, some of the tries you scored in your 'amazing comeback' against the Ospreys were through half hearted defence. Don't be a smartass - you're watching a tries video rocket scientist.

Remember your cynicism next time a GP TRIES compilation is shown.

I personally think that there's far more creativity and dynamism in SA rugby than people realise.

By Anonymous Scotsdale, at October 15, 2009 3:26 pm

  • Well said Scotsdale.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2009 3:53 pm

  • holy hell jean deysel destroyed a would be tackler right at the end.

By Anonymous vark nek, at October 15, 2009 4:46 pm

  • Amazing video, all the tries are just excellent. Lots of movements (you can even see a hooker sprinting for the try for the second try of the vid), very nice chip kicks, amazing offloads. I'm French, but I enjoyed this one more than the entire top14 try collections of this season. No wonder SA is on top of the world atm.

By Blogger Nathan, at October 15, 2009 6:31 pm

  • Brilliant complelation, also glad to see Eltigre get put in his place, as a neautral I am bored with reading pedestrian comments promoting one's hemisphere in these forums. Surprised no one else commented on the awesome maul WP used to set up the first try. Man that was a effing train! Here's to champagne rugby wherever its played!

By Anonymous Canadian Content, at October 15, 2009 6:43 pm

  • "runaway freight train" is what I believe the commentators called it. Beautiful.

I'm incredibly suprised nobody has mentioned ANDRIES BEKKER #5 pinning his head back and going for literally a good gallop. He looked like an effin horse running on the pasture, and that offload was tremendous, he nearly fell over it was so awkward for a guy his size. Truly amazing natural talent this guy has. Can't wait to see him in the autumn matchups

By Anonymous cdn, at October 15, 2009 7:02 pm

  • That's just fantastic stuff - cheers RD. Wouldn't ever get to see this comp if it wasn't for this website.

I agree with (nearly) everyone else here - for a domestic comp the standard of tries is very, very high.

By Anonymous Ted, at October 15, 2009 7:09 pm

  • In the last try, didnt the number 19 knocked out the defender?

    Great tries!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2009 7:25 pm

  • Fantastic. must be the best tournament yea? Even better than Super 14 methinks!!
plus to all those dissing others' tournaments. Grow up, show some respect. enjoy the game.

By Blogger Alexander, at October 15, 2009 8:52 pm

  • Gotta love the galloping hooker...
All the other tries were really good as well.

By Anonymous Ben, at October 15, 2009 9:15 pm

  • "get put in my place"
By a scot and a canadian?
I actually laughed. Your COUNTRIES wouldnt even beat GP sides.

By Anonymous ElTigre, at October 15, 2009 10:23 pm

  • ElTiger, stop being jealous and lay off. Go watch some of the rugby that makes you happy and leave the Currie Cup alone (There's a reason why it's the oldest domestic competition in the world)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2009 11:40 pm

  • That was seriously good stuff. The first 3 kicks were actually lessons in how to control the bounce of the odd shaped ball - evolutionary stuff.

And the kicking was but the most minor part of the compilation.

I knows its 3 rounds of the Currie cup in one reel, but seriously, the continuity, the angles, the super pacy props.....

That bulls cheetahs match has some collection!

It was noteworthy that teams who were behind scored quite a few of the featured tries: that in itself is a good sign for the currie cup. (And an omen to/for the rest of the world)
Cheers RD (even the song went well! Great rising noise intro...)

By Anonymous mise, at October 16, 2009 12:38 am

  • ElTigre, I'm not Scottish you silly little man.

But I'm glad you got a chuckle out of your arrogance. Nice going. Way to get the high ground - laying into a South African competition, then the Scots and Canadians. Anyone else you want to have a go at while you're at it? Perhaps the Air NZ Cup doesnt live up to your high standards either? ;)

Watched this vid again - quality, and besides mr grumpy, I'm glad to see such positive comments from neutrals and fans of good rugby. That's why we're here after all.

By Anonymous Scotsdale, at October 16, 2009 12:46 am

  • Great tries!

By Anonymous Francois, at October 16, 2009 1:19 am

  • classy stuff, thx rd

By Anonymous piaruskov, at October 16, 2009 1:21 am

  • El Tigre, what a knob (and this from an Englishman!)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 16, 2009 1:39 am

  • wow! Enjoyed every minute of that! As has been said, a little unfair to compare 3 rounds to a single round for the other comps, but this was the most entertaining by far!
Also, I was really impressed by the cheatah's back line. Try No. 1, of course, is great talent. Try no. 3 was great support and TIMING, particular the pass from 15 to 13. 15 held the ball just long enough for the 13 to get on his line and burst through. Great stuff!

By Blogger granite, at October 16, 2009 2:12 am

  • great rugby

By Anonymous jamestheconvict, at October 16, 2009 3:05 am

  • You've gotta think the South Africans have the most depth in world rugby.
The Currie Cup is getting better and better.
I wish Australia had a domestic comp half as good.

By Anonymous Bill, at October 16, 2009 3:40 pm

  • Some amazing stuff there.

By Anonymous WelshOsprey, at October 16, 2009 3:58 pm

  • fabian juries is like a wet fish! you think you've got him but you don't!

By Anonymous Rehanb, at October 16, 2009 4:15 pm

  • ElTigre please don't even go there
The Currie Cup and Air New Zealand Cup are on a completely different level to the GP plus the GP buys half our players? But we still just produce more better ones...
Don't get me wrong GP and HC are great competitions but please don't compare them, these domestic sides would rip apart your bought sides...
Boks are gna play the Tiger's at the end of the year, it'll be a B team made up of most of these players your seeing here, will be interesting to see if the tigers can even beat a side that have never played together, a side full of 'half hearted' defenders...

By Anonymous AbsaCurrieCup, at October 16, 2009 9:52 pm

  • 'if the tigers can even beat a side that have never played together'

Like how the Lions who had never played together almost beat the Boks in a 3 game series?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 16, 2009 10:49 pm

  • So true cnd bekker was marvelous there... and what about jacobs pass/kick?
    gotta love the currie cup

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 16, 2009 10:53 pm

  • BRILLIATN RUGGER, JUST BRILLIANT!!

  • Is this Bulls side exactly the same as the S14 Bulls side? Sorry I'm not 100% clued-up on SA rugby, but want to be! :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 16, 2009 11:36 pm

  • ^ pretty similar, yes. Minus the Springboks during the Tri Nations, but for the semis tomorrow, it's pretty much the same, bar one or two players as far as I know.

Please pick a name those who post as Anonymous. Your comments will be replied to easier, and most likely not get removed randomly.

  • Super 14 sides generally pick from a larger geographical area than the Currie Cup sides. At least thats the idea. Theoretically, the Sharks should be picking some of the Border Bulldogs and Mighty Elephants!

  • 4:56...ouch.

    By Anonymous paddy2392, at October 17, 2009 12:44 pm

  • The RugbyDump regulars are wrong as usual (when are they ever right?). The Currie Cup is far from the oldest domestic competition in the world.

The United Hospitals Challenge Cup started in 1874, and is THE oldest domestic rugby competition in the World.

On a side note, much like everything else in Australia, South Afria and New Zealand. The Currie Cup trophy was given to South Africa by Great Britain, along with boots balls and other equipment.

So instead of acting like some out of control children, you should be thanking us daily for giving your countries everything.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 1:24 pm

  • To the above ass - thank you for the gold in sa, thank you for the trees, thank you for apartheid thank you for the crime, thank you for messing up our beautiful country, thank you for the ocean, thank you for the birds, thank you for EVERYTHING in our country, there do you feel better and feel that you are god?
Bugger off and go to another site, rugby doesn't been assholes like you!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:19 pm

  • SA, NZ AND OZ - don't need to thank you for the fact that we are NO 1, 2 AND 3 in the world - jealousy is such a bad trait and this on a rugby site, go and support your lovely football team sure they want you there, cos we don't !!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:21 pm

  • beautiful tries! Great stuff RD, keep it coming - LOVE this comp!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:24 pm

  • The burst of pace and the off load is what makes this clip amazing!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:30 pm

  • To the above idiot - there is a difference between the oldest cup competition and the oldest DOMESTIC cup competition in world rugby.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:44 pm

  • To the jerk who claims SA.OZ AND NZ should thank him for everything, one question - have you actually ever been to visit either one of these amazing countries? THOUGHT NOT - So, learn to shut up about stuff you actually know NOTHING about!!!

    Now for the important stuff:

    Brilliant rugby, great stuff

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2009 7:48 pm

  • absacurriecup
The currie cup and S14 may look like sevens but they defend like schoolgirls. I prefer my rugby to be intense rather than 80+ points a game where the defence is laughable.

By Anonymous ElTigre, at October 18, 2009 3:33 am

  • ElTigre, 36-0 in the WC was pretty laughable too eh mate? :) Hmmm intense attack, skill, quality, or schoolgirl defence? Which one suits you when answering that?

That other comment by the Anonymous loser is just ridiculous. Get a life pal.

By Anonymous Shaft, at October 18, 2009 11:53 am

  • Wow there are some idiots posting here.

To the guy who posted below me about the lions.

You won one Test, the 3rd one against our B team. Well done, takes all the best players in the United Kingdom who had played more games together than that 3rd test bok side to win a game. btw B&I Lions are the best players the northern hemisphere have to offer so you can't complain.

and Eltigre please just stop posting, that guy below you's comment was priceless.
    36 - 0 awesome defence england,can't win a game without johnny...

and the guy who said we should be thanking england, you colonized the guy, enslaved people and made a mess out of it to serve your own greedy needs. We will never thank you for shit!

By Anonymous ABSACURRIECUP, at October 18, 2009 1:36 pm

  • ah yes, the Northern Hemisphere _is_ obviously made up entirely of the United Kingdom.

Congrats on that bit of maths - perspective is a wonderful thing.

And so is the rugby in these highlights.

Am I wrong about that kicking theory btw?

    This is it again:
It seems that in 3 of the first 5 try scoring clips there was a moment when the kicker turned the ball sideways , just before kicking, to increase control and place the ball somewhere without the bobbling. Obviously the odd person has thought of it now and then in the past, but in this clip it happens 3 times, and works out really well each time.

So is this a new thing emerging from SA rugby, or have I just not spotted it often enough before now?
