Great try for Jonny Wilkinson against Bourgoin

The hype surrounding England's greatest ever flyhalf is unavoidable. Few can believe that Jonny Wilkinson is still the real deal after all he's been through. We'll find out soon enough, as England play Australia this coming Saturday.

As if they needed any more publicity, Wilkson's much publicised comeback has had the eyes of the world on his new club Toulon in the south of France.

His form in the Top 14 and Challenge Cup (now the Amlin Cup) has meant that he could well be injury ravaged England's saviour this weekend, playing Test rugby for the first time since March 2008.

Wallaby coach Robbie Deans is all too aware of that, stating that he thinks an England side with Wilkinson is a far more threatening prospect than without.

"I don't imagine he'll have changed much as a player," says Deans.

"We believe England will be more dangerous with Jonny there. He'll bring a lot of shape to their game. His influence on his peers will be valuable in terms of the confidence he'll bring to them.

"We expect to meet England at their best - and know that Jonny will contribute to that," he added.

Wilkinson scored this fantastic try against Bourgoin in the Top 14 last weekend, identifying the space in front of him, and showing incredible fleet-footedness for a guy who's been through so much physically. That step at the end was superb as he left the defender for dead.

Great try, great player. It should be a great match on Saturday. We'll have all the best bits for you following the match, right here on Rugbydump.com.

  • JW won't have the forward platform to build on like he used to so let's not get carried away. He's a great player but he won't win games single-handed; I'm expecting all three autumn tests to be really hard for England.

  • Neither a fan of England or Australia, all I can say is..Australia better be ready for Wilko's 2nd coming. He's nearly back to his best and when's he at his best, sorry DC, Gits, he's the world's best!

  • to the guy above, so there should be, he one of the best ever rugby players of all time.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2009 7:24 pm

  • It seems to me that English rugby fans are mostly hoping that Wilkinson saves them, that he can lift them out of the doldrums. Not that they actually believe that he can, but I think that they trace/attribute their average performance in recent years to JW's injuries. The argument might go something like, "Had JW not been injured so much, we would have won the World Cup," or we would have done this or we would have done that, etc. Pretty similar to what we all just saw with Dan Carter returning to NZ rugby. AB fans thought he would fix all their problems. Like a few other comments here, it seems like a bit of sycophantic "god-syndrome." English rugby has a great many problems that would prevent them from competing with their SH coutnerparts (and even the other NH teams) - something even JW can't sort out.

  • realrugby.com - try not to generalize peope

By Anonymous Yeah Safe, at November 03, 2009 7:37 pm

  • As an England fan im glad to see him back, he was arguably the best the player in the world but that was more than 6-7 years ago.

Still clearly a very good player but unfortunately England as a whole are a pretty weak side at the moment - especially with all the injuries we've got.

I hate the hype that surrounds Johnny and particularly his comebacks, imagine how much more pressure he feels when he steps onto the pitch with all this crazy media build up.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at November 03, 2009 7:42 pm

  • Giteau will expose Wilkinson and show the Johnny faithful how limited their idol is.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2009 7:46 pm

  • Great to see him back in such good form. He can't save England though, one good player is not enough if the rest is pretty much average.

By Blogger Thomas, at November 03, 2009 8:03 pm

  • ...unless, of course, I meant to generalize.

"It seems to me" that English rugby fans, in general, want England to do well, naturally. They wouldn't be fans, otherwise. The last time they did well, arguably, was when JW was around. Now that he's back, there seems to be a sense of hope, in general, that England rugby is on its way back up. Why wouldn't there be? He's a great player and England rugby did pretty well the last time he was around.

But, as 'Ted', 'Mikee' and 'The Inside Shoulder' said, there are other issues surrounding English rugby that might prevent them from doing well.

I would think that it would be all right to generalize that English rugby fans hope that JW can save them out of their desire to see England rugby do well. In general, AB fans wouldn't have wanted Dan Carter to come back and play well out of their desire to see the AB's lose, would they?

Not everybody, of course. I can't tell you the name of each and every England rugby fan and their feelings on the subject, so I thought I'd generalize.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2009 9:24 pm

  • i would like to know the score of that match, did he just score against a beaten team, against a 2nd row with his team doing most of the work (pressure, putting him on his front feet) or did he pull a very nice try out of the hat?

By Anonymous Yeah not so Safe, at November 03, 2009 9:24 pm

  • The irony is that Wilko does hate the hype, and tries to steer clear from it as much as possible.

He was and is a great player though, so its good to have him back, for rugby in general.

England can't rely on him completely, but there's no doubt that they'll play differently with him on the park.

By Anonymous Greiffel, at November 03, 2009 9:29 pm

  • " Mikee said...

there really is a serious case of god syndrome with this fella on this site"

Could not agree any more! Wilko = all fart and no poo of recent years.
Never has a team won a world cup in a more boring way than England and wilko.
People who say he is a great...i belive the expression is... form is temporary class is forever.
he was an on form player....but he didnt last, thus he is far from a great, too inconsistent

    By Anonymous ghandi4ENG10, at November 03, 2009 9:32 pm

  • Whattaya know, he's still quick with his feet.

I guess it is a bit of a Mierscheid Law that Jonny's fitness and England's performance should go hand-in-hand. There's nothing to say he'll make up for the fact that England have looked a little dismal so far this year. But Johnson's a smart man, and the squad he picked seems pretty capable...we'll see anyways.

By Anonymous flapjack, at November 03, 2009 9:45 pm

  • "Never has a team won a world cup in a more boring way than England and wilko."

Really? I always thought a last-minute drop goal was a pretty exciting way to win a match.

It will be sad and funny at the same time, though, if he manages to get himself injured up this weekend.

By Anonymous flapjack, at November 03, 2009 9:51 pm

  • flapjack you're an idiot for even thinking that about Wilko. Looking forward to seeing him and geraghty slice the aussies up nicely on sat.

  • Nice try Wilko

But I have to say whats up with all the wilko vids. Are we going to see any 10 part mini series on any other player?
Wilkos mini series would have been interesting 6 years ago, but today...

By Anonymous Craig, at November 03, 2009 11:14 pm

  • Please. Please. Can we not have another video worshipping this bloke. Surely that try is not worth the post. A kick that luckily bounced into his hands? Great!

Good player who did some cool stuff a long time ago. I use to not mind him, but since this obsession with him on this site, Im starting to get annoyed.

By Anonymous Scotty, at November 03, 2009 11:30 pm

  • Nothing against the aussies but I wonder if they will target Wilkinson really hard..... He is a big threat, I wonder if England as a nation and as a team will think with Wilkinson on the team it doesnt matter who the other 14 are......which come on admit it happened before!!!

Wilkinson is a threat, but im bored of the hype, I want to see him with the England 10 shirt on again, playing his best!

p.s not that i mind the videos RD....

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 03, 2009 11:35 pm

  • I just read some more comments and i think in all fairness people have to recognise JW for the fantastic player he is, because im not afraid to accept great players whoever they are...dan carter, giteau, matfield (not a 10 but hey he could be lol!) and it is true JW is a great player but like many comments state i think its true there is too hype and hope that JW will win the day...tink of the world cup 2003, he really would of had trouble if it wasnt for the likes of Johnson and the rest who held him up. I want to see him do well, but please stop with the whole Wilkinson will win it for England attitude.....

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 03, 2009 11:46 pm

  • if everyone knows he reacts badly to hype, than surely he'll playing appalling because there has been soooo much hype over this fella

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 12:04 am

  • Scotty, I for one didn't get to see this try, so am I glad it was posted. And how can you say lucky bounce? Did you also miss that awesome step to beat the last man?? I think it's a great try.. and I'm sure many will agree, and I'm not even english!

In RD's defence - I dont think there's any 'obsession' with him on here. There was a documentary posted (much appreciated btw), and there's been a few other random bits. He is one of the most recognised and celebrated flyhalfs of all time, isnt he??

Did some cool stuff a few years ago, yes, and the point is he seems to be doing some really cool 'stuff' again now.. hence the hype.

My two cents, and thanks RD. Nothing wrong imo.

By Anonymous FrankyH, at November 04, 2009 12:27 am

  • Good try for sure... I personnally don't have a problem with the fuss made on him. He's been (and still is to some) one of the best 10 in rugby's history.
When Zidane came back same story, when Jordan came back same story, so why would the media and fans act differently ? because it's rugby ?

By Blogger jay, at November 04, 2009 12:45 am

  • Oh, England will probly still lose.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 4:57 am

  • he is good and the Top 14 is certainly becoming a great competition - but if he is going to be good enough to single handedly win all games against all comers wouldn't we be seeing more highlights with him dominating ?

I think Dan Carters performance on the weekend was the best seen in a long time tagged onto a cynical playing style.

And Heinrich Broussow - what a great game. Played like a raging bull with a set of hands and distribution of a truly great 7.

NOW - Australia this morning - Quade Cooper played great apparently - will we get to see Giteau at 12 and Cooper at 10 ?
Now i think that would exciting.

Can we see some highlights RD ????

By Anonymous jamestheconvict, at November 04, 2009 6:55 am

  • the only thing wilko ensures isthat he'll take chances given to him by his team. be it an overlap or a penalty.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 9:13 am

  • I respect Johny Wilinson a lot, so I'm sorry to say this, but Giteau is a much better ball player than him at the moment. I mean, ok, the try was nice, but you can see he isn't anywhere as quick on his feet as Mat Giteau, or Quade Cooper for that matter. So expect him to be exposed come Saturday.

By Anonymous jamestheconvict, at November 04, 2009 10:06 am

  • This is really annoying and im sure its miffing him as well. First off he needs quick ball from the rucks and that means front 5 have to be on the ball.

Hes not just going to magic the ball from elsom and co and kick it behind them or step them all, he needs front 5 to step up and to be quite honest at the moment England have no decent front 5 so ball will be really slow putting Wilko and the back line under immense pressure.

By Blogger Kenny, at November 04, 2009 11:14 am

  • He looks like he's playing some great rugby but behind a pack that what i've seen of it is goin forward most of the time, hows he going to do behind a weakened english pack?

I agree james, i watched the match and lost count of the amount of times i saw Richie McCaw off side at the side of rucks.
Oh and Wales should make mince meat of the NZ scrum, complete rubbish callapsed on a number of occasions.

"Had JW not been injured so much, we would have won the World Cup," or we would have done this or we would have done that, etc

England did have JW in the last WC, so why would they be saying they would have won it had they had him?

Yes he's probably the best in the world but there's no way he can win it single handedly. The rest of the team is crap bar one or two and Australia and NZ are in another league at the moment.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 12:14 pm

  • Wilkinson syndrome is the same with every great player in a key position.

The same happened in NZ with Lomu and now Carter

The same happens to a lesser extent with O'Driscoll

Anyone who says Wilkinson isnt the best player in the world when on form is in denial.

    (not english)

  • Who said he can't play running rugby?

By Blogger vinniechan, at November 04, 2009 2:51 pm

  • Being an England fan myself, I think most the sentiment is more like "Whatever happens, it's just good to have him back"
We have a dynamite in Shane Geragty outside, and it's has been very long time since we last had such an exciting partnership to look forward to.

By Blogger vinniechan, at November 04, 2009 3:02 pm

  • I think whatever country you are from, or whatever country you support or anything then you have to appreciate that JW is a good player.....yes he isnt a one man army, and if England arent up to scratch it doesnt matter who is playing at 10. But i think everyone should appreciate it is good to see a class player back on form (hopefully.) Brian O'driscoll is a fantastic player and when he got back on form i couldnt wait to see him play!

Dont say you are into rugby if all you like is your own team and your own players.....its starting to sound like football seriously!

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 04, 2009 3:35 pm

  • Being a somewhat biased England fan, i will have to say that it is grea that Jonny is back for us. However, despite the fact that Jonny is one of the best flyhalfs ever, one man cannot win a match. I also have to say to the posters who comment that wilkinson only did well because of the players around him is perhaps true, but it is not like Giteau or Carter or Steyn are surrounded by a team of complete failures is it? The Tri Nations teams have got very good players in all positions and outstanding ones in Their flyhalfs. So saying that wilkinson is only good because of the players around him is irrelevant, because if Carter or Giteau were to play for a bad team, they wouldn't be considered as good as they are. Rugby is not a one man sport, it is also how well you gel with the rest of the team.
Wilkinson is in my opinion the best Flyhalf Rugby has seen in the professional era, but if the rest of the England team does not perform, we cannot expect Wilkinson to win the match for us. Wilkinson is a match winner, not a team by himself. England fans should do well to remember this and fans supporting other countries should give him the credit he deserves.
I one of Jonny's biggest fans, but at the end of the day i just want to see a good rugby game and i keep my fingers crossed that England will win it.

  • I really like Jonny Wilinson as a 10 -he has mastered the pass, tactical kicking, drop kicking, goal kicking, field viewing and tackling, which makes him one of the best fly halves in the world, but sometimes i get the sensation that he doesn's enjoy himself on the pitch, he never smiles or encourage himslef after a good kick or try.

By Anonymous Joost, at November 05, 2009 2:40 pm

  • a lot of the people on here are saying that "Jonny can't save England, one man doesn't make a team" and I feel like a lot of you have missed the point. Jonny isn't the ONLY player in the team who is coming off good form at the moment. I mean look who he has on his shoulder, Shane Geraghty has been absolutely astounding for Northampton, and Monye and Banahan have been world class for their clubs. Put all these on form players together and no matter how good the opposition is, the on form team will win.

Furthermore, the addition of Wilkinson will inspire his team mates, so not only will he bring incredible skill to his game, he will hopefully encourage the players around him.

Good luck to you Jonny, show up the Australians for the shambles they really are at the moment. I cannot see us losing on saturday, to a team with such poor performance recently. Mark my words, Jonny can do it.
