Keith Wood chats to Paul O'Connell about the Grand Slam

Former Ireland hooker and captain Keith Wood recently met with Munster and British & Irish Lions player Paul O'Connell to have a chat about what it was like to win the Grand Slam last year, and how Ireland will repeat that success in 2010.

Ireland famously won the Six Nations last time around, for the first time in many years. O'Connell talks about the experience, but also touches on how professionalism these days doesn't allow one to really soak up and savour the victory unfortunately.

The Irish legends chat about everything involved in that historic day when they beat Wales with only a few minutes to go. Stephen Jones famously came up short with that final kick, which if it had gone over, would have changed history and taken the Grand Slam away from Ireland.

O'Connell feels that despite having the challenge of trying to retain the trophy this year, his side are well prepared and have quality players and leaders who can do it once again.

"We're probably not a lot different from last year," says O'Connell.

"Maybe confidence is a lot different now and there's maybe a relaxed confidence about the team now. This time a year ago we'd worked hard in the autumn, but really had a poor autumn coming into the Six Nations and we really needed to produce something special and that's what we did.

"We've a lot of confidence and knowledge of what we're doing now under our belt," he said.

They start the tournament by hosting Italy at Croke Park tomorrow. Can Ireland repeat the success of last year, or will someone else step up and make it their season?

  • Haha, I love that clip of Woods inside the comentary box.

  • Thank God BOD is the captain; maybe O'Connell won't bitch so much at the referee.

That being said, come on Ireland!

And that was pretty awesome the footage of Wood in the box...how quickly he goes from heartbreak to celebration.

  • theres nothing wrong whatsover with how o connell deals with referees, you have been listening to much to sky who may i add never mentioned it when johnson or dalagio were doing the samething.
    ireland for the championship

  • Vid slow loading, so can't comment on it, but I do remember the footage of Woody, pretty good, hate to have been in there with him after that, that is if I wasn't a potato munchin' paddy.

Also, I think to win the championship, Ire need to get the slam otherwise France for it on points scored. Although, France do play in Wales and Eng have beaten them 4 in a row (2 home and away) excluding the WC07 warm ups, so too early to judge France.

Oh and disagree with Black Velvet Band and agree with Anon below him.

  • Now I have seen it, they didn't show the footage that Wood describes of nearly choking himself, much better that the fist pumping on this.

If non Irish fans claim the piece about Wales winning out of the blue and Ireland wasn't was cockiness from O'Connell, consider the stats over the 50 6N games. Ire and France have both 36 wins each and Wales 4th behind Eng.

Just shows how tight it can be that France have 2 GSs and 4 championships to Ire's 1 of each, yet they have similar stats right across the board, including tries.

  • Wow those stats you mentioned are quite incredible. It just shows you how many times Ireland bottled it. Their GS must have been simply from probability, i mean you cant screw up all the time if you are one of the best teams can you. ;)

But seriously i can't wait for the 6 nations and i hope the banter wont be to bad for anyone that supports a losing team. Good luck guys.

  • Cant wait...My favourite time of year is around again....First six nations then H cup Knockout stage...

Heres to a great few momths of rugby and intelligent discussion rarther than the mind numbingly idiotic discussion which have been going on around here lately....

Best of luck to all but hoping to god Ireland bring it home again...

  • "you have been listening to much to sky".

No, I fear I've been watching too many Munster matches. That can't be helped, since I'm a fan of the boys in red. But I don't like how much O'Connell complains to the referee. He's only a step above being a French fly-half. I don't think he's ever heard of "speak when spoken to". When he was sent of the other week, we got to see that even ROG has more discipline when talking to the referees.

But whatever, none of that should matter. I'm ready for this weekend, and I'm hoping Ireland can stay on top in the NH. They sure look like they can on paper.

ok, i dont watch any rugby on sky.....but o'connell moans and whines.....

someone like Johnson used to speak with a commanding power and TELL the referee what was wrong, o'connell whines to the referee......anyone can tell you that....he is a good player still though...

  • WTF, did he mention france?!?! i swear there was no mention of them!!!!

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE, ANOTHER VIDEO ON HERE ABOUT 6N WITH NO MENTION OF FRANCE!!!!

    DISGRAAAAACEFUL!!!!!

  • Did he give 110% to that interview....did he squeeze every last bit of answer out of the interview, did he put the fear of god into woody, did he.... yeah we get the picture

  • Keith Woods, you friggin legend. One of the players I'll always remember for some reason.
All the respect from a french guy

  • woody aka the raging potato, haha what a ledge

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2010 9:19 am

  • Funny how people joke with "france non-presence in the media" :) Grow up because it's quite true

That said Ireland will be very hard to beat. Their scrum and forwards are a copy&paste of the last grand slam.
France and england will be the 2 others favourites

O'connell is a trashtalker ok, but dallaglio, johnno were pretty competitive too. French can't trashtalk because their accent ;-)

  • it looks like the french ref decided not to penalise any forward pass by ireland

  • I'm pretty disappointed by the game of the irish men against italia this afternoon. It was good but not enough... Something was wrong but i don't know what. Btw the essential is their win and I'm looking forward next week, with the clash I am waiting for at the stade de france. allez les bleus, jouez votrte jeu sans complexe les mecs!!!
I hope Italia will continue to grow up, with good defensive performance like today. Unfortunately I find their offensive game very poor.
