Dimitri Szarzewski headbutt on Jean-Philippe Genevois
Stade Francais hooker Dimitri Szarzewski has been cited and will more than likely sit out for a few weeks after he head-butted Toulon’s Jean-Phillipe Genevois during their eventful meeting on the weekend.
Yesterday you got to see the clip of big Mathieu Bastereaud smashing wing Rory Lamont, a clip which brought up quite a lot of debate regarding not only the legality of the tackle, but whether or not the huge center wouldn’t be more suited to the front row.
One front rower who probably won’t be playing anywhere anytime soon again is hooker Szarzewski, who nutted Genevois for no apparent reason, other than a few words, some history, and a funny look. There was something very Zidane-Materazzi about the whole incident, particular in the way that Genevois flopped to the floor despite the contact not actually being all that significant.
Play acting seems to becoming more and more prevalent of late, as pointed out by commentator Gonzalo Quesada, former Argentina flyhalf.
That aside, you can’t defend the Stade hooker’s actions and he’ll no doubt be on the sidelines for a few weeks, missing France’s upcoming internationals when they play Fiji, Argentina, and Australia. We’ll find out soon what the length of the suspension will be, but it could be anything between a month and two years.

A bit of history between both of them....I understand
Both should get suspended. Szarzewski should know a bit better with his experience (he can say good bye to the Autumn Test). As for Genevois, he should quickly join the French soccer team. Pathetic and somehow uncharacteristic for a front row from Toulon....
By Flipje, at October 26, 2010 5:30 pm
Great comments from the commentators. "He has some Italian origins"... "I think he played football in Italy". Good stuff.
Quite a footballesque move from 16. Shame it's becoming more common in rugby.
By KG, at October 26, 2010 5:31 pm
I've seen more contact from squaring up to someone... barely even a headbutt. I know it will result in a suspension but that's just a sign of the softness of rugby these days (both the suspension to come and the fall to the ground).
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 5:34 pm
Genevois walked into Szarzewski quite hard. Should have gotten a red (judging by the standards of today).
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 5:37 pm
Think the ref dealt with it perfectly on the field - told them to grow up and shake hands. A ban would be disproportionate to the wrong; probably, a yellow card would have be fairly disproportionate also - barely any difference to when front rows square up against each other when a scrum comes up.
If anything, just a warning so that he's reminded to improve discipline.
Agree that Genevois hardly comes off well from the incident.

thats ridiculous!
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 6:01 pm
Szarzewski should not have done this and it's obviously a disgrace but Genevois reaction is a bigger disgrace ! Should be banned for two weeks for 'acting like a footballer' (the so-called headbutt did not have any power imo), what we obviously don't want in rugby.
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 6:26 pm
Szarzewski's headbutt was pathetic and Genevois' dive was worse.
I think the ref's decision at the time was fine, the incident didn't effect the game. I do think both men deserve to get a match ban for acting like bad children.
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 6:35 pm
Completely agree with all that has been said previous. Have had a similar experience where a player faked the fact that a team mate had punched him, the ref did not see and sent our man off for foul play. However, the player who faked the injury got dropped by his team for a month! Think both guys should be banned!
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 6:52 pm
Disgusting frm both
Even if to give a little headbutt defy is usual between front-rows, u just can't do that.
Swarzweski will take few deserved weeks, but Genevois simulation must be sanctionned or it will become the era of the Drogba and C.ronaldo rugby divers...
By Flooz, at October 26, 2010 6:58 pm
C'mon, sure it was stupid by Szarzewski but still banning for this... Suppose it should be one game to keep the consistency but its still ridiculos. Warning on the field would have sufficied.
Bye the way Genevois WTF. Hoping Rugby won't become like Soccer.
By Zed, at October 26, 2010 7:01 pm
genevois should come play some league... probably would have been some proper biff not this soccer moping on the floor shit.

I cant believe a toulon front row dived that way....
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 8:29 pm
in france they kiss you on each cheek to say hello, if the guy hadn't gone hollywood he'd have seen Dimi was just going to give him a peck on the other side as well.
Daft move by szarzewski, missing the internationals because of a shoulder nudge.
silly boy.
Now where's the bird with her tits out you promised us RD? :)
By goodNumber10, at October 26, 2010 8:38 pm
Genevois is a whining bitch he should be the one to get cited for that horrendous simulation
By Oli, at October 26, 2010 8:44 pm
what the fuck is wrong with that? thats not anywhere near a headbutt. the only guy that should be cited is the one lying on the turf crying. that is exactly the reason why i enjoy rugby league more and more. it is a game where you can actually tackle without that freaking arm-rule, and have a proper fight and not get cited or send of immediatly. i ve never been a forward looking for a fight all game, but one of the first things i have learned was: you should never shy away from a fight. when the other guy hits you, hit back.

Okay, a couple things to look in here:
1. Szarzewski should know the rules of the game by now... so many yars playing top class rugby and still making this kind of stuff? No wonder why he's struggling with keeping Servat from the France no. 2
2. Genevois - a shame. Saw him playing gainst Munster and he had a very good game. But THIS? Honestly, he should be banned for being such a hypocrite and giving this awful example.
3. Please get back to old fashioned shirts, Max Guazzini! Your plyers are starting to look like pimps.
Cheers
3.
By Juggernauter, at October 26, 2010 9:35 pm
Both to be banned. Szarzewski behave stupidly but Genevois reaction is a disgrace for rugby, no place for acting cheaters in this gentelmen sport
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 9:45 pm
what a diver!!!
By Cheis, at October 26, 2010 10:07 pm
Genevois is a tool. Any respect for him has quickly gone out the door.
That aside, you can’t defend the Stade hooker’s actions and he’ll no doubt be on the sidelines for a few weeks, missing France’s upcoming internationals...
I don't think Szarzewski should be dealt with at all. A scrum has more impact than that "headbutt". I feel like he shouldn't be sanctioned at all, as punishment to Genevois for putting on a such a show.
It would be like if Shontayne Hape had been cited/suspended when Giteau did his little dive.
By fry, at October 26, 2010 10:07 pm
yes he headbutted him but the other guy went down like a footballer, there was no force in that headbutt at all.
By Chris Boy, at October 26, 2010 10:35 pm
The head butt should get the appropriate suspension... whether or not it was hard or a full connection, the intent was there and he should be punished accordingly.
However, the DIVE and flopping in response to the hit should also result in a sanction. To prevent Rugby from turning into soccer/football, there needs to be a firm stance taken on B.S. like this dive.
Give the diver a 1 game sanction and a Tony award (as that was more Broadway than Hollywood), and stamp the diving from the game before it takes root.

By Johnny Ireland, at October 26, 2010 11:16 pm
I was expecting much worse when i read the title of the clip. no doubt he shudve been sent of but It wasnt a big headbutt. one month ban would be harsh, anything more would be ridiculous
By Anonymous, at October 26, 2010 11:39 pm
LET'S PUT THINGS STRAIGHT !
The reason Dimitri did this was out of revenge. 2 years ago, Jean-Philippe Genevois gave him a headbutt during a game at Jean Bouin. He thereby fracturing Szarzewski's orbital floor (http://www.stade.fr/dbimages/Image/inside_actualite/popup/080503_dimitri_b.jpg).
I'm not justifying his action, just calling back the history.
But if I may say, I have more problems whith the way Genevois dove then with the way Dimitri gave the hit....
By Unknown, at October 26, 2010 11:46 pm
Genevois is a massive soft cock.
What a pussy, diving like a soccer player.
I hope Szarzewski gets let off, just on the basis that Genevois is a fucking pussy who shouldn't be allowed on a rugby pitch.
By Bill, at October 27, 2010 12:18 am
^^^^^genevois is both a massive soft cock and a fucking pussy?
By according to bill, at October 27, 2010 12:28 am
A pure wendyball move...
By Anonymous, at October 27, 2010 12:37 am
Yes he's a m,assive soft cock and a pussy, because both those terms aren't to be taken literally, they are insults and mean that he is a cowardly piece of shit (also not meant ot be taken literally).
You would undertstand all that, if you knew how the English language worked.
Like if I called you a jerk, I don't mean you are a sudden movement, but if I call you a pedant, that is literal.
By Bill, at October 27, 2010 12:48 am
Woah, woah, woah... Bakkies Botha was suspended for 9 weeks, I want this frenchy gone for 9 weeks too then. It's only fair.
By Anonymous, at October 27, 2010 1:09 am
Take it easy, Bill. No need to fly off the handle. If we're talking about understanding English, then you should see the humor in calling someone both a "cock" and a "pussy".
In fact, I'd like to suggest that Genevois is also an "asshole", just to give him the hat-trick.
By fry, at October 27, 2010 1:15 am
And does what goodNumber10 is talking about have anything to do with this weird production?
http://tinyurl.com/2f3qzcp
With all the pre-game show, maybe Genevois was just trying to keep things theatrical.
By fry, at October 27, 2010 1:21 am
ouch, that looked really painful
By MCB, at October 27, 2010 4:23 am
2 things:
first, that guy totally played that up, and second, pink cheetah print? how much gayer can you get?
By Anonymous, at October 27, 2010 6:24 am
Szarsewski has been retained for the autumn tests.
my gosh, dunno which attitude is more to blame: that stupid headbutt from Szar (who should keep his temper, for he's quite a good hooker) or the perfect ITALIAN DIVING from the other PUSSY, genevois??
gosh, if rugbymen start playing with the referee like that soon enough tackles'll be forbidden!

"Woah, woah, woah... Bakkies Botha was suspended for 9 weeks, I want this frenchy gone for 9 weeks too then. It's only fair."
Bakkies headbutting a scrum half who is on the ground in the back of the head vs. a headbutt that was closer to a tap of the head...
By Flooz, at October 27, 2010 8:25 pm
Diving is pure cowardice.
The look of disgust on Szarzevski's face!

By Ryan, at October 28, 2010 7:32 am
Stupid headbutt (a couple of weeks imo) and stupid dive (a warning imo).
If they'd been dealt with on the field at the time then a yellow for both and then a couple of weeks extra for the headbutt.
No point in people saying it was nothin', a headbutt is what it is.
By mooloo, at October 28, 2010 10:42 am

By Swat, at October 28, 2010 2:02 pm
It is extremely näïve to think that any sport will remain clean when it becomes professional, especially one with as much conflict as rugby. Gamesmanship usurps sportsmanship, and playing up to the referee as Genvois did is simply another weapon in the arsenal to get an advantage over the other team. It happens because it works. Take the money away from the sport, and this would clear up in no time.
By Anonymous, at October 28, 2010 3:20 pm
Are hair-butt forbidden by rugby rules?
By Dalma, at October 28, 2010 4:58 pm
Genevois should be suspended for life and sign up with a football team. This guy is destroying the rugby sport. Its not a sport for pussys! Everybody knows it!
And when you're picking a fight finish it and dont go crying on the field stuppid mtf Genevois!!!!
By Anonymous, at October 28, 2010 9:35 pm
I would not punish Szarzewski at all, isntead I'd ban Genevois for about 6 months.
Tell him to go away and harden the fuck up for a few months.
