Danny Care's great sportsmanship as Morgan Stoddart gets badly injured

Welsh back Morgan Stoddart will not be going to the World Cup following a severe leg injury he suffered on the weekend. If any positive can be found in such a horrible incident, it was the way that the players around him reacted.

Stoddart broke his leg in two places as he was tackled by Delon Armitage during England's win at Twickenham on Saturday. While there were no replays shown at the time, and we've chosen not to include one here, the way that Danny Care in particular reacted should be commended.

You can see in the clip that England had good turnover ball, and while Care had the option to fling it out and only then attempt to get hold of medics to help Stoddart, he instead alerted referee Steve Walsh to the situation immediately, and chose not to make the pass. It was a small gesture, but a genuine mark of true sportsmanship that should not go unnoticed.

Wales' Jamie Roberts, another class act, clearly appreciated it as he tweeted after the game "Great sportsmanship from Danny Care, great to see."

Care, being the good man he is, played down the incident, saying "Anybody would have stopped the play." He added "It's such a sad way to get injured but that’s the sport we are in."

Roberts went on to say that they will be playing for Stoddart this coming weekend, as they were all affected by what happened and are devastated for the Scarlets flyer.

"Losing to England is always heartbreaking but the biggest thing for me, and I’m sure I speak on behalf of all of the players, is Morgan Stoddart breaking his leg. People talk about these games and staying injury-free but unfortunately for Morgan he’s certainly pulled the short straw.

"It is bitter-sweet for him as he was playing well and looked very sharp," he added.

At this time of year, it's inevitable that players will get injured in the lead up to the World Cup. Stoddart looks to be the first unfortunately casualty, a side-effect of playing the game.

"It's the harsh reality, players have got to play, going to a World Cup. The medics do everything they can to keep them in one piece. It's not nice to see something like that," said Martin Johnson.

Stoddart's subsequent operation was successful, and he will return home to the Scarlets to begin a rehabilitation program, with his time out of the game uncertain at this stage.

The video below shows both the injury in real time, and the way that Care handled the incident. If you'd like to leave a message of support for Morgan as a comment below, I'm sure we can make a plan for him to read them at some stage.

  • Gute besserung !

  • Also Matt Banahan deserves a mention for telling the ref to stop time. Surely Steve Walsh realised that Stoddart was badly injured and he should not have to rely on the players to see that. Stoddart was banging the ground in agony for gods sake!

  • Great sportsmanship on Care's part, no doubt.

I'm curious about what the law says in such a situation. Do they determine the restart and put-in? Or did the ref wing it, so to speak?

  • Best of luck to Morgan on his recovery. The Irish fans were witness to a similar incident to Geordan Murphy in the lead up to a previous world cup. no doubt fairly gut wrenching for such an injury to occur before the rugby world cup but I'm sure he'll be back in the red of Llanelli and then Wales soon enough !

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 3:33 pm

  • If only Hape had supported Banahan to the inside, then Stoddart would have never intercepted in the first place. England seriously need a better 12. Perhaps Wilkinson?

  • Gutted for morgan, he plays the brand of rugby that any welsh or neutral fan loves to watch and will be a loss, all the best for your recovery mate. Good lad Danny great to see, IMO the only 9 really in the running to start in this tournament for england

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 3:37 pm

  • Not sure he would have done the same in a RWC final, however, in this situation, fair play to him.

By Blogger Espancatio, at August 09, 2011 3:37 pm

  • gutted for stoddart he was coming into some top class form, hope the rehab goes well and look forward to seeing you on the international pitch asap

  • When the referee stops play for a player injury, it's a scrum for the team that last had possession.

By Anonymous moddeur, at August 09, 2011 3:38 pm

  • Sad to watch that type of injury as it happened in a very unfortunate way..
Hope that most of players will be fit for the event, as england, australia and France have many players recovering of injuries

  • 0:10" you can see the injury, its nasty!! Best of lucks to morgan stoddart in his recovery!!

  • Was at the England v South Africa women's match in Ontario on Friday and England wing Michaela Staniford did something similar. SA player was hurt and on her back so she checked her, rolled her over and called for a medic. Classy people, we rugby types!

By Anonymous Rob, at August 09, 2011 3:42 pm

  • @ Bobby Nations It would be a scrum to the team in possession or the team going forward. Which would be England in this case.

By Blogger AkaRed, at August 09, 2011 3:43 pm

  • Yes, I meant to mention Matt Banahan too. He also showed genuine concern.

Very sad injury, especially so close to the RWC.

By Blogger GMC, at August 09, 2011 3:46 pm

  • "Not sure he would have done the same in a RWC final, however, in this situation, fair play to him"...to be fair I don't think anyone would. It's the difference between a 'friendly' and non-friendly I guess.

As for the ref, I don't think he stopped the clock just because Banahan told him, would like to give him the benefit of the doubt there.

All the best to Morgan, always especially tough when it's in a run up to the world cup, poor fella

i also agree that england need a better 12 and think jonny would be perfectly suited. having two playmakers could actually make england a little unpredictable for once and thus there attack might get going

Flutey, not Hape. But I agree with the idea of getting Wilkinson to play inside centre. Not sure he agrees, but I really think Flood-Wilko-Tuilagi would be a quality midfield!

By Anonymous Von, at August 09, 2011 3:58 pm

  • Great sportsmanship, well done.

But, how late was he arriving at that ruck!?!?

Had a very good game overall though I thought.

By Anonymous Von, at August 09, 2011 4:00 pm

  • I think everyone can agree to that being a great piece of sportsmanship.

Poor Stoddart had a real should for a starting XV place come WC, seeing as I believe Byrne has his head up his ass and has been in poor form for at least 2 years.

As for Wilko at 12, that could become a real concern for opposing teams, I felt he won England the game due to sheer experience and knowing when to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Both teams had a relatively strong defensive display, and the tries came from slight lapses.

I will conclude with that I felt Wales had the better fitness of the two teams, but by the end Jonny had done enough for the win.

    I don't see why.

Pleased that you drew attention to him though, if you watch again it looks like Banahan thinks they're stopping for Bennett (hooker), who's just had a slight knock.

By Anonymous Von, at August 09, 2011 4:04 pm

  • How come Brian Moore and Eddie Butler are commentating on this? It wasn't on BBC - I had to go to the bloody pub to watch this. No great hardship of course but a bit of a pain in the arse.

By Anonymous Von, at August 09, 2011 4:07 pm

  • Excuse my 4:04 comment. Just watched again - looks like Bennett must be telling Banahan about Stoddart's injury.

By Anonymous Von, at August 09, 2011 4:14 pm

  • Sorry for Stoddart, hope he gets well soon. Nice piece of defending by him there, by the way...

Danny: well done! Every now and then you can count on a player to show the rest of the world why rugby is so much better than any other sport.

As for the people saying he would not have done that in a final: as a true, maybe little naive, Rugby Aficionado I choose to believe he would have done the same. Just hoping such a terrible thing will not happen in the final though...

  • Good sportsmanship from both Danny and Matt. Well done!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 4:27 pm

  • Awful injury, hope he gets to play some in the upcoming season.
However the thought that crossed my mind was when Miles Harrison announced that sky would not show a replay, the thought of everyone around the country with access to Sky+ rewinding to the injury...

  • Damn. To miss out on the World Cup is just bloody awful. Don't know what else to say. Good luck Stoddart, and good form Care.

Note the sly grab of the ass by Steve Walsh...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 8:52 pm

  • Horrible injury. Even worse considering how much potential Stoddart has. I consider Stoddart and Brew the two best wingers in Wales with North close behind.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 8:54 pm

  • When a player is like that and the ref fails to see it (Walsh really should have done a better job here), the medical staff really should intervene. Some things are more important than the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 8:55 pm

  • It's good to see Banahan patting Rees on the back and helping him up, as well as Care and Banahan telling the ref to stop the game. Hope Stoddart all the best. As well as being a fantastic player already with plenty of potential left, he is very entertaining to watch. Hope to see him back soon.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 10:22 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 09, 2011 10:47 pm

  • That's because Steve Walsh is an asshole and a terrible referee. He didn't stop play when this happened until he was told to by players and he was confrontational and arrogant as always with the players.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 10, 2011 12:08 am

  • Hope Stoddart recovers quickly.

Good sportsmanship from danny, a little prouder to be English again after watching all the chav's rioting on the news...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 10, 2011 1:15 am

    *Glug glug glug*

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 10, 2011 2:02 am

  • Anon above..

Steve Walsh and alcohol jokes are a bit low seeing as he has recovered from his problem...

I actually find him to be e very good ref with a bit of character. Stoddart was out of play, obviously hurt but not obvious that it was that bad and so the laws are "play on". Its not his fault he ahd to have care tell him.

Very proud of Care as a rugby person.

    By Anonymous Ned2or3, at August 10, 2011 2:43 am

  • Im with Ned on this one... Stoddart was not say lying on the ball obviously injured... he fell as if he was tackled and injured...

Someone said he was pounding the floor in pain... where did this happen??? i didnt see any indication of this....

I personally think from OUR angle we can't see that stoddart is significantly injured and we have an elevated view... walsh is lower and therefore his view is worse...

I think good on care for drawing attention, but perhaps it took walsh a second to realise what care was on about...

I don't blame walsh for this, and as with ned i find the guy is a bit of a relief... i mean he doesnt seem willing to send people to the bin or off for minimal offences, which sadly seems to be a trait most other refs posess... there is too many cards... i remember walsh givng the old "im watching you" signal and then telling someone off for throwing punches.. im not saying this should be a bloodthirsty sport but giving a bit of leeway does help the sport flow better...

    By Anonymous paper_tiger, at August 10, 2011 10:23 am

  • Good on Danny Care and the other players who figured he was badly injured, and I think the criticisms being levelled at Steve Walsh are totally misplaced.

He's not my favourite ref, but I thought he did okay on Saturday, and he did nothing wrong in this incident. It's pretty normal for refs to allow play to continue when there's a player who's gone down injured - no-one wants rugby to turn into soccer - and when it is more serious, players often do what Danny Care did here.

Not on the same scale, but I remember Jason Robinson's hamstring went playing SA, and basically he was allowed to go down, no-one piled on, and play continued. And you see sportsmanship of this sort every year, whether it's props taking off the pressure when a scrum goes down awkwardly, or a nasty break like this one.

There's good spirit still in this game, glad to see RD recognise it. And best wishes to Stoddart on his recovery, just real, real bad luck to get injured right before a world cup.

By Anonymous edbok, at August 10, 2011 12:32 pm

  • @paper_tiger

I agree. I recon he's the kind of guy that will be back as soon as humanly possible, Scarlets will miss him!

By Blogger Savage, at August 10, 2011 3:21 pm

  • Hope Morgan comes back as soon as possible from this, best of luck to the lad he played as junior with my local team and was well liked there.

Care did what anyone witnessing that kind of incident should do. The ref on the day was less than alert to a lot of things that went on so he perhaps needed the players help.

Good choice not to show the injury as it happened though some ghoul below has chosen to place a Youtube link .People who need to see that kind of thing in slo-mo are like "rubberneckers" at car accidents and need to get a a life.
