Courtney Lawes huge hit on Julien Tomas

Northampton Saints survived a second half comeback from Montpellier in the European Challenge Cup on Thursday to win the encounter 28-24.

Ben Foden, recently called up to the England squad, was once again a star player on the night as he set up tries for Chris Mayor and Stephen Myler.

It was a close match but Saints sealed the win late in the game with an impressively taken try by Scotland winger Sean Lamont.

There were a few big tackles and tension throughout, but it was this hit from young Courtney Lawes on Montpellier’s scrumhalf Julien Tomas that we’ve chosen to feature.

The young man is as athletic as you could ask for in a guy who’s 6ft7 and weights over 100kg’s. Anyone who’s seen him play will know that he gets around the park, and can easily play as a loosie, not just as lock.

He has a bright future ahead of him and it’s great to see a big guy show such commitment so late in a game. The chase and hit was timed perfectly, and as you can see, it was a bit of a mismatch as Tomas clearly felt it.

Could we have some highlights of the victory v Leicester? The tries were fantastic, and I think Hartley put in a massive hit on Dupuy as he fed Flood for his try. Awesome.

A loosie would be a loose forward, which is the back row. A mismatch would mean that one team is far superior to the other. Hope that helps..

Yes that can mean mismatch, but this mismatch was the little scrum half verse a froward coming full speed and hitting him. When he wasn't ready to be hit.

Somebody should ,mention this kid is 19. Should be a huge star by the looks of it. When I saw this tackle I yelled "OOOOOOooohooooooooooooohhhh" in my house lol, I was cheerin for the young kid.

btw mismatch = miss match

which is when two opposing forces which come into direct contact with each other are judged to be of unequal value, with one being seen as greatly superior.

its a huge hit, but (and i no ure all gunna have a go at me for this) its not really a fair contest. 6.7 and 100lb vs 5.9 and about 65lb. tbh i think it was a bit harsh. still tho good to watch and i tgink he has a promicing future.

LMAO @ all these comments about shit being unfair. This is sport. This is rugby. That happens, that's what makes sports great, and rugby even greater.

The fact that there is SO much mismatch in rugby is what I love. The little guys can zip around the big guys, while the big dudes can lay the huge hits to the small guys. Anticipating either one of those gets me excited, and that's just one small mismatch in rugby.

Fair or unfair, it's part of the game, and I love it.

Everybody gets nailed some time, so who cares.

would people stop using pounds and start using kg, cos weighing 100 pounds is odd, i weigh 165lb or 75kg which is 12stone. So according to some i weigh as much as Lawes and Tomas put together. Get it right people. Also jumping into the tackle is illegal and not advised cos you may end up on your head

wasn't meaning jump into the tackle.. was meaning jump when you go to claim a high ball.. you cant be hit when you are off the ground.. just like full backs tend to do every time they claim a high kick..

AAAAARRRGGHHH!!!!!!! There is nothing illegal about jumping into a tackle!! There is very little illegal about any tackle. The rules are you can't hit high, you can't dump players beyond the horizontal and in union you have to attempt to wrap the player up with your arms. You can jump into tackles, lift players off their feet, lead with the point of the shoulder, dump players on their backs or shoulders and generally smash the hell out of players. It's part of the godamn game, get used to it, or follow another sport. Technically, in the rules, you can go out and break bones, dislocate shoulders, knock people unconcious and generally cause havoc on the other team.
The intention is to hurt the other team, smash em, dominate them physically. If you can batter a team, they won't be able to play rugby, one of the reasons Australia does so well. Not the best players in the world, but well drilled and tough defensivley so they keep teams from playing their natural game, cuz they get in their faces and disrupt the opposition teams' rugby.

i must have sort of missed some coments, so:
A - jumping, while tackling or before, is LEGAL! they've done it since the very time rugby was inveted and they still do it now - i couldn't imagine any dougy howlett try without it, and he might be one of the hardest tackling backs in the world ever (imo)
B - what's that crap about the weight? it's part of the game... when playing scrum-half, you gotta be aware of the fact that all those loosies are gonna try to beat the shit out of ya - or even backs like nonu, nalaga or cross...
