Argentina beat England in Salta to level the series 1-1

Argentina won the second match of the two Test series against England 24-22 at Padre Martearena Stadium on Saturday, redeeming themselves after last weekend’s loss at Old Trafford.

It was a strengthened Pumas side in front of a packed home ground, which proved an entirely different prospect to that which faced England a week ago.

Veterans Mario Ledesma, Marcos Ayerza, and Rimas Alvarez Kairelis boosted the pack, as the home side put huge pressure on the visitors, resulting in an early try after just two minutes. Juan Manuel Leguizamon stormed through a huge gap after a turnover at the lineout.

Horacio Agulla then broke through the line before combining beautifully with the flying wing Gonzalo Camacho, who flew in at the corner for a great try.

Four successive penalties by Andy Goode had England trailing 21-15 before Argentina extended their lead with a trademark drop from flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez.

England scored with four minutes to go through a well worked try that had big wing Matt Banahan scoring his second try in two weeks, but it wasn’t enough as the Pumas easily ran down the clock.

"Argentina improved dramatically," Ledesma said. "We conceded a few penalties in the third quarter, but we regrouped at the end. We were not as tired as they thought we were."

Try scorer on the day Banahan was optimistic despite the loss."It was a very hostile environment but if you can play well in the worst places, hopefully when you visit the nicer places your standards will only rise," he said.

"To come to Argentina will probably make or break an England player as we only had about 10 fans there and it was really noisy. I was pleased with the way it went."

  • Well done Argies, you deserve a lot of respect for this win. It's amazing how those players are beasts at home.

    Qué partido che!

  • Disappointing after last week at Old Trafford. Basics cost them dear.

  • i'm argentinian, what does it mean "...make or break an england player..."?

By Blogger Fran, at June 14, 2009 8:56 pm

  • It means either be successful, or fail completely.

That pass by Agulla to Comacho was superb.. and high speed too. Great try, and fantastic result for the Argies.

  • i think i read somewhere that this was the first england test match that wasnt broadcasted live.
it was a great match for the pumas, they had england under huge pressure.
but england played weel the last 20 minnutes or so. also, remember that england has most of its first XV on the lions tour

  • ESPN south america I think.. or whatever it's called

  • "england have most of their first team in SA" blah blah,

9 players are gone and Vickery / worsley are actually worse than their replacements here. would have lost by more cause they give away so many penalties

remember the Argentina squad rarely trains or plays matches, they play for club teams very far away !

  • England have only got 8 on the lions tour, this was close to a full strength team. Thanks very much for putting the highlights up, I couldn't find them anywhere.
Aslo, I'm hugely hopeful after reading articles in the Times and the Telegraph that the lions might do a mini-tour of arg before australia in 2013. SA don't deserve a lions tour, the attendances have been disgraceful. I love Argentina, keep it up boys.

  • hernandez + armitage = future legends of the game.

cipriani too if he can get game time

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 14, 2009 9:24 pm

  • to anonymouse.. SA dont deserve a Lions tour eh? cos attendances have been poor? is that like saying that the public dont deserve cinemas when a bad movie doesnt get many people going to watch it?

think about it.. saffas arent obligated to go watch.. if they're interested, or respect the team.. they will. my two cents.

well done argentina for beating england though. good result.

My friend i am from SA if you live and work in SA is is Fooking impossible unless you are rich to buy a ticket you have no idea! so please be quite about attendance its not the ppl of SA fault that they made the tickets 3 times " let me say it again" 3 times that more expensive than what the tickets for the Super14 was! so please check all your facts before saying shit like that please.

  • Second try a tad forward no?
That tackle by the winger on banahan was a bit pitiful.

All those english people saying Hartley should be with the lions.

Oh ye definitley. Giving away penalties left right and center and couldnt hit a rhino's arse with a banjo in the lineout.

A true english find he is.

By Anonymous Broadside, at June 14, 2009 9:45 pm

  • Well done argentina, even without a proper competition like the 6nations or tri-nations they still compete at the top level.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 14, 2009 10:26 pm

  • Sorry to say that but I think that Banahan is a pain in England's arse. They spent all the game throwing balls on the big boy who has been tackled constantly. And he seemed to have some defence problems. Yes, he finally scored... but he almost just had to run after Armitage's brillant - and forward - pass. Put winger at wing, not lock.

By Blogger Pitseleh, at June 14, 2009 11:18 pm

  • kind of agree with the last comment, but still, the line about Spies in the video about the chiefs defeat could be applied to Banahan: how many farm animals did they have to fuck to breed that thing?

By Anonymous piaruskov, at June 14, 2009 11:36 pm

  • The highlights seem to suggest England were well outplayed (even if the scoreline doesn't)...can someone who watched it tell me if England RAN the ball much or was it mostly just inane kicking?

The IRB (or whoever) need to seriously capitalise on this good Argentinian team and consider having a mini tournament/series in Argentina to give the game a higher profile there. I don't mean like 6 nations or tri-nations, but it's own separate tourny...with a view to a WC hosting spot in the not so distant future.

  • ey muchas gracias por traducir

    thank you for the translation...

to Anonymous no6, i saw the hole game and yes, Goode used a bit too much his kicking, sometimes with great results, one to Cueto that almost finishes on a try, and an other one to Banahan in the middle of the field. They didn't play the ball much, i miss that kind of rugby.

By Blogger Fran, at June 15, 2009 1:04 am

  • Forward pass for the second Argie try. Hernandez was world class on the day however.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 15, 2009 3:10 am

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 15, 2009 3:10 am

they well would be able to complete against the them (considering they were placed higher than NZ and AU in the world cup)

have to agree with anon above...he might not of beaten byrne to a test spot but would of at least done is bit for it

  • YEYAH GO SH!! kidding, hard luck Poms :P

By Anonymous Rabbit, at June 15, 2009 10:21 am

  • To Anon, i think the Argies will be joining the Tri Nations? I think after the world cup though? Don't quote me on that i could be wrong...but wouldn't it be great for the Argies to join our comp!! SH at its finest :D

By Anonymous Womad, at June 15, 2009 10:23 am

  • It would be great to have both Arg. and a Pacific Islands side in a SH comp but the huge distances involved make it a very difficult concept.

By Anonymous robert, at June 15, 2009 11:10 am

  • Argentina is mooted to join the 3-nations after 2011. The IRB is putting plans into place and SANZAR is ready to come to the table if certain requirments are met.
However it'll be a logistical nightmare. The players will literally be circumnavigating the globe several times a season just for a handful of games.
It's hard for Europeans to understand maybe, but bear in mind that you could fit about three or four Europes just in Australia, add in the width of the entire Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, the continents of South America and Africa and those are the distances we're talking about.
It'd be like entering Japan and the US into the six-nations.
Argentina will get their chance but it's gonna be tough on the players.
It'd be nice to see Europe bring in a new team or two also, maybe Romania or Georgia.
Oh another thing is that the tri-nations takes place during the start of the European league season, so you'd either have a substandard Argentina side (which would get walloped) or you'd be pulling the top Argie players from the clubs for about a third of the season.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 15, 2009 1:07 pm

  • Dave. Are you saying South Africans don't respect the Lions then? If so why? I would like a decent answer please.

Not agreeing with the anonymous before you saying SA don't deserve a tour due to attendances either. I think you're both wrong and the attendances are low due to other reasons. Ticket prices perhaps? access ? I don't know. But i really hope it's not because you have no interest and don't respect the Lions like you said.

By Anonymous Andy, at June 15, 2009 4:07 pm

  • Andy, that's one side of it. Ticket prices are another reason, for sure. But perhaps it's a bit of a combination.. if well respected players/stars were playing, then maybe people would consider spending a little extra.. but in my opinion they're not because the Lions lack star quality.

I cant speak for everyone though, obviously, but I just dont think they hype and buzz is there.

About the Test series, it exists, sure, but for the midweek games, especially at costly prices, people cant be bothered.

That said, attendances have looked worse than they actual are. In other words, 20 000 in a 50 000 seater is never going to look good, but it would full most UK stadiums probably.. so it's not all bad.

Another issue though, regardless of these midweek games.. is that the actual Test prices are through the roof. South Africans have never had to pay what's being asked for now, so many of them are saying screw it, we'll have a barbecue and watch with mates at home.

This really is off topic.. apologies admins etc.

ON topic.. Gonzalo Comacho - where have I heard that name before? Sounds familiar..

By Anonymous Dave, at June 15, 2009 5:32 pm

  • IMO it would be much better for Argentina to join the 6 nations...It would be less of a time frame nightmare and ince most fo their players already play in Europe that would help out alot also...

By Anonymous themull, at June 15, 2009 6:33 pm

  • Gonzalo Camacho is in Argentina´s seven selection, and also aparently he ´ll play in harlequins.

  • Shocking missed tackle by Banahan for second try.

By Anonymous Brick Shithouse, at June 15, 2009 10:15 pm

  • Los Pumas played well, but man...do they ever have discipline problems. It may be a facet of their football culture, but all the back-sass and making the ref's calls for him are just the start.

Towards the end of the match, both sides - but Argentina more so - lost control at the breakdown and forced a number of needless and stupid penalties. Bit of a scrappy second half, in my opinion.

I don't know if it's a language barrier, but it can make for some slow and boring rugby with the backs not getting very much ball nor a chance to run it.

By Anonymous Pio, at June 16, 2009 2:55 am

  • Nobody mentioned Gonzalo Tiesi, he tackled like a flanker and was dangerous with the ball in his hands, too. Thanks God his frequent injuries stopped

    Vamos Pumas!!!

  • the game wasn't as thight as the game, argentina had some aful 15 min after camacho's try.
as regards to argentina's inclusion on the tri i believe rugby in argentina must be pro.

By Anonymous bauti, at June 17, 2009 1:45 am

  • wow wut the hell happened to the mid field defence.
Impressed by Banahan. With Cueto and Sakcey both fit, he will have to wait for more caps but showed great discipline and composure.
This is not a full strength team. The first choice 10/12/14 are away. 9 is up for grabs, and front row, second row, back row combinations are all new.
    More like an experimental team.
Btw, am I alone in thinking Borthwick should not be captain? It's not like he's playing badly, but he's been totally indifferent and takes up a spot which could have been given others who could do just the same. I think Cueto has been outstanding and perhaps a candidate for captain.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2009 7:51 am

  • replying to two people above:
when i said england were close to full strength, i was referring to only the 8 lions players being missing, not injuries. otherwise you'd say that the pumas weren't, no contepomi or corleto for a start.
as for the person saying i was wrong about attendances because of ticket prices, i don't care what the ticket prices are, that's your fault and problem, the powers that be should have sought to fill the stadiums, if you can't run a lions tour and have poor attendances, you don't deserve a tour.
