New Zealand level the series against France in Wellington

The All Blacks drew the two Test series with France in a rain drenched Wellington after a 14-10 win that went some way towards redeeming the pride of the nation.

They bounced back well after their 27-22 defeat to Les Blues last weekend, with a much improved forward effort, as they denied France from winning their first series in New Zealand since 1994.

It was a tight and hard old style Test match, with the driving rain doing neither side any favours as the ball resembled a piece of soap at times as it spat out of the grasp of both sides on numerous occasions.

Stephen Donald struggled in the conditions initially, missing his first three kicks, but when Ma’a Nonu dived over in the first half, New Zealand looked to be taking shape.

Two penalties to Donald and one to his replacement Luke McAllister had the home side in the lead throughout. A superb individual effort from left wing Cedric Heymans kept France in the match though.

Heymans got the ball with very little space to move, so little in fact that it seemed he had stepped out. He hadn’t though, and he sensationally went on to beat no less than four players on his way to the tryline for a brilliant individual try.

Scrumhalf Julien Dupuy converted, before his replacement Dimitri Yachvili slotted a penalty, but it wasn’t enough as the All Blacks held on for a well deserved win under immense pressure.

anyway well done NZ played better on the day!!

good luck to France next week against AU!

    By Anonymous creggs08, at June 20, 2009 12:26 pm

  • Agree with creggs08.

the AB raised the level and they deserved this victory.

    Congratulations from a frenchman.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 1:39 pm

  • The french team was a bit better than the AB. We had some problems, but at the end it the referee that let the AB jump again and again in the rucks. The IRB rule 'hands in ruck' is now a 'hands out blue' for many referees.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 1:46 pm

  • I think that officialy France won the series, thanks to the points margin didn't they ? They got a trophy anyway.

By Anonymous Ben, at June 20, 2009 2:28 pm

  • Yes france win the series for 1 pts and win the "gallaher (chocolate ^^) trophy" for the first time since his creation in 2000 !!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 2:33 pm

  • Nah, they did get some trophy, but 1-1 is 1-1 - series drawn

By Anonymous Dave, at June 20, 2009 2:37 pm

  • What a come back from last weeks effort. The newby's really stood up.
    They can only get stronger.

  • The only sunshine of the game was Heyman's try

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 3:11 pm

  • it was a big fight but the all blacks did the job even if france could take the lead with vincent clerc's action...
    well done kiwis.

maintenant c'est au tour des australiens...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 4:35 pm

  • Good SH teamwork in the Lions test, between the ref and the home team. Especially when he called Jones back when the ball wasn't even out, genius.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 5:01 pm

  • Is anyone else sick of the Kiwi commentators? They are the most biased I have ever heard; it was especially bad in last weeks test, where they criticised every decision that went against the All Blacks. In the UK commentators support the referee's decisions, unless they are blatantly wrong.
Also the New Zealand commentators had no clue as to most of the French players names: for the entire first half Medard was called Heymans, Heymans called Vincent-Clerc, and Clerc just not mentioned. Was pretty appalling the amount of times names were gotten wrong and not corrected :S

By Blogger RedYeti, at June 20, 2009 5:09 pm

  • Fully agree with the bloke above, for both tests heymans was called clerk and vice versa and the same with Ouedraogo and Dusatoir. You'd think they would of realised their mistake after the first test

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 5:20 pm

  • Redyeti what are you on drugs or something? all comentators are slightly bias so i wont argue there but the uk are the WORST EVER! Stuart barnes and his friends are really irritating and they actually spoil games by moaning on about how bad the players are playing or the refs decision etc they just make it one big whinge! wa wa wa whinging poms i say ..And when things are going their way like some moments in the lions game all of a sudden thier players become gods or something and we have to put up with hearing how special they are throughout the game even if they only did one "amazing " thing... The oz comentators are bias sometimes too but are by far the most entertaining!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 5:27 pm

  • after reading a few blogs after the first test some people were complaining about the commentators so i listened a bit more carefully this test what a bunch of idiots so biased it was un true and do they even know who nz were playing they got there names wrong so often
i really great game when the mute button was on

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 5:49 pm

  • No Anonymous I'm not, although I wouldn't say no to some if you're offering ;)

Did I say that I liked Stuart Barnes et al anywhere in my post? I detest the man, I was getting pissed off at him during the Lions test today too, but really the Kiwi's were something else. I have never heard commentators complain so one-sidedly: mainly in the first match though, the second one was just filled with incompetence instead of bias.

By Blogger RedYeti, at June 20, 2009 6:00 pm

  • Kiwi here. Shocking conditions. Better performance than last week but I can see us getting it in the Tri Nations big time. Macdonald was shokcing. Great try by Heymans.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 6:18 pm

  • To one anon

Jones was called back for Pietersen's knock on, not the ball going out, very poor from the Ref. Reminded me of Ire v France 07 when Murphy had intercepted and was half way down the pitch when Steve Walsh blew up for French infringement.

To sec Anon, most commentators are rubbish, especially Sky's, that Irish commentator Robson is quiet possibly the most cliched person to have ever commentated and I'm Irish. You'd swear hehad a book of sporting qoutes with him every game.

But, the Aussie commentators, Phil Kearns and so on are brilliant, some bias, obviously, but they just love a good game of rugger. Their excitement over any bit of skill or play is entertainment of the highest quality.

By Anonymous Huh!! the 3rd, at June 20, 2009 6:43 pm

  • Heymans is one of the most unpredictable genious bastards in the game.

By Anonymous TheWatcher, at June 20, 2009 6:58 pm

  • Very great Try of Heymans !!

French flair ?? no, just talent...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2009 12:25 am

  • that is one of THE great tries....Amazing stuff...

By Anonymous themull, at June 21, 2009 1:02 am

  • Yeah these commentators always get the names wrong, they even called Keiran Reid Stephen Donald in the second half, they look nothing alike.

Rokocoko needs to be dropped for masaga and Donald should be dropped all together.

Anyways good win for the A.B's, i still reckon they'll come last in the tri nations though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2009 1:11 am

  • From a neutral point of view, I have to say I did find the Kiwi commenting annoyingly biased.

Have to agree as well that Stuart Barnes is a dick.

Watched SA coverage of the Lions match today and found the SA commentators fairly decent. Then again, their side did end up on top.

The Irish guy who does most the HEC games is probably my favorite, and have to agree as well that the Aussies are fun to listen to.

But if you want to hear really bad rugby commentary, all you have to do is listen to the thankfully seldom Canadian commentated games.

If Rokcofoco (sorry about the spelling) had scored the try that the French winger had scored, the Kiwis would be still talking about it.

By Anonymous Canadian Content, at June 21, 2009 3:22 am

  • Canadian Content said - "If Rokcofoco (sorry about the spelling) had scored the try that the French winger had scored, the Kiwis would be still talking about it."

The NZ reports I've read and the couple of Kiwis I've spoken to still are talking about Heyman's try so I don't know what your point is.

Compared to the shambolic and dull French side that toured Aust. a while back this team is very well prepared. They aren't a great side but they're committed and tough in defence and have some wheels outside when they need 'em. Both these close tests went to the side that was better on the day but NZ will have to go up about 5 notches for the TriNations.

Before the days of TMO the Cory Jane try would've been awarded on the spot .. you slide over the line with the ball under you and if you're NZ, French or from Timbuktu that's always a try. But the TMO tried to find a reason not to give it, couldn't come up with one but didn't give it anyway, then the ref didn't know what to do next .. the 22m dropout was a guess. Dumb stuff.

By Anonymous robert, at June 21, 2009 4:02 am

  • Agree about NZ's commentators being biased but as a one eyed kiwi myself I usually don't mind too much. SA's commentators are the least biased i reckon and Aussies about on par or worse than NZ's.

Brad Thorn was the standout play for me tonight but well done France, you put us to the metal and it's a worrying sign for the 2011 world cup ('99 and '07de ja vu?).

  • Four or five fucking kiwis attacked Bastareaud last night, so he won't be able to play the next test due to severe facial trauma. Thanks you retarded people, after last week's beer throwing fucktards it's just the proof we needed that NZ people are racist, anti-french, aggressive and bad losers.

i am very shocked,is this rugby spirit?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2009 3:56 pm

well, i'm quite sure sure it was not done by some maoris, they are so much braver than those ex brittons
that's a real shame for this so called land of rugby (land of rugby is every little village in south of france)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2009 4:44 pm

  • I was shocked after the throwing of bottles against our team in Dundin. Kiwis told us it was just a bunch of students over there who were drunk. But now with the Bastereau event we can obviously say that some kiwis supporter are real hooloigans. Shame on them, i regret IRB gave New Zealands the organization of next world cup, they are the worst bad loosers and don t deserve it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2009 5:09 pm

  • I think SH commentators are a little less knowledgeable about NH players than the other way round. And possibly a small bit more biased, although all commentators are.

Remember the commentary in the 2005 Lions series when the Lions players were just known by their numbers !?

    It was embarrassing.

sky said that nz have level the series. According to everybody, France have won it, i think

NZ will be back for the tri-nations, this french team will be very entertaining to see vs ozzies

ps: i'm not very fond of nz fans attitude, after the bottles thrown in dunedin, bastareaud have been cowardly agressed by 5 bastards.
shame on nz rugby fedration for no reaction on both "incidents"

By Anonymous Gavin, at June 21, 2009 10:45 pm

  • Not all Nz'ers are cowardly scumbags like the arseholes who attacked Basteraud, dont judge all kiwis on a few idiots.

Apparently they're looking through CCTV footage to try find the attackers, but the french team didnt complain to the police.

What a disgrace, they should all be shot!!! (The attackers)

By Anonymous IceyMan, at June 21, 2009 11:20 pm

  • Hope we'll find the agressors, apparently Bastereau was just going out from the taxi to enter in the hotel when 5 retarded insulted him. Then he responded and the five cowards jumped on him.

He won't lay any charges against the agressors, hope they wont't get away with it...

That shows that the retarded of Dunedin (who threw bottles at the French squad) are also in Wellington... If New Zealand is the land of the rugby then i'm the queen of england. Worst spirit ever!

By Blogger Hacman, at June 21, 2009 11:43 pm

No it's not, I know many NZers well and have lived there myself and like anywhere else the vast majority of people are none of those things. But it is proof that intense sporting cultures anywhere in the world contain a small percentage of total jerks and NZ is no exception. The Dunedin and Wellington incidents are shameful and the authorities should do all they can to find these idiots and deal with them harshly.

By Anonymous Andrew T, at June 22, 2009 3:17 am

  • Well done NZ, it would have been a difficult psychological blow if they had lost twice to France at home. For that reason they showed some grit and determination.
On the Bastareaud incident, this is shocking, there needs to be a serious crackdown on those responsible so young people in NZ don't think that this is an acceptable thing to do. I am confident the real spirit of kiwis will come to the fore and those thugs will be outed and punished.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 22, 2009 4:15 am

shame on those five idiots! they let their whole country down

By Anonymous ybr, at June 22, 2009 11:30 am

  • Is it just me or was the ref awfully bad ? (for both sides).
I know it was raining and all but I did not see the AB rucking and staying on their feet. Look at the first try and watch one of them diving in the ruck... isn't that illegal ?
And yet both teams made the game pleasant regardless of the weather.
The Nz deserved to win nevertheless...

By Blogger jay, at June 22, 2009 11:48 am

  • Why are there so many twits that have something against NZ? Direct your anger somewhere useful.

Loads of Kiwis have been beaten up themselves like that, just in the wrong place at the wrong time and bumped into some idiots. 5 on 1 is not cool at all, so cowardly.

There has been a response from the NZRU for the fool who thinks there wasn't.

Otherwise I look forward to going through the same emotions as last year in a probably very close Tri-nations

By Blogger olwaka, at June 22, 2009 12:50 pm

  • basteraud was beaten up after?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 22, 2009 2:57 pm

  • Hey guys stupid comments! To generalise this shameful attack on the French Player and the bad behaviour of a minority of fans to all the Kiwis is as well disgraceful, as the attack itself. Don´t we have that kind of bad behaviour everywhere? The fans in Stade Jean Bouin are quiet during a kick of the visting team, while they are whistling during the games at Stade de France - too many rugby newbies! How often do I read about problems of rugby players having a fight, when they are a night out? That kind of stupid shit happens everywhere in the world, but it isn´t the fault of all the Countrymen, only the guys involved are the stupid idiots.

So pls think about, why rugby is our beloved sport, because wherever in the world you go as a rugby player, you get a warm welcome and you will be involved quickly with your new team mates

A for Bastereau shit happens anywhere. Better we don't behave like any football fans and try to generalize this behavior to all kiwis.
What is more disturbing to me is the lack of consistency I can see between referees these days. On this game the ruck zone was such a mess with player flying around (literally if you look at the NZ try) and the referee is not saying anything about it.

Shameful also in my view is the late takle with the shoulder in the face of Clerc by Nonu. he should have been on the pitch to score his try.

By Anonymous Lapin from France, at June 22, 2009 8:19 pm

I rate Graham Henry's method of not putting the pressure on his players to win by 6 points a fair decision.. After all, look how the NZ media treated and pressured the team before Test 1.

    Good job ABs!

  • Erf, apparently the whole incident with Bastareaud is just a big lie frome the kid... as he came home with two chicks and fell in his bedroom as he was drunk... Hence the scar on his cheek bone.

Geebus, I'm pretty sure some comments look now really stoopid especially for those who bashed the kiwis...

By Blogger jay, at June 25, 2009 3:54 pm

  • Jay, i totally agree with u

As many people here, french, british, kiwis inclued, when i heard about this incident.
i thought it was true like everybody, because of the 1st test incidents (thrown bottles on french players as they wanted to congrat the crowd)

France federation didn't know about the reality of the incident, that was maybe why they didn't signal it to the police.
Bastareaud finally confessed that he was drunk and he fell on a table corner. he was afraid, panic and invented the agression.

i can understand his fear but I think it's a shame. no respect for nz people.
Looking for further decisions from FFR.

i also think newspapers need to grow up. in France i think people are sorry, but the taste of scandal is not their cup of tea

By trying to cover his mistacke he tarnished New Zealand reputation. On the end he gave a very bad image of France and rugby. He shouldn't be selected again with french squad. Sorry for him...
Moreover French squad manager told some brawls between players may happened as a result this last declaration of Bastareau can be another lie...
