Top 14 Biggest Hits of the season compilation

Last week we posted an awesome compilation from the French Top 14 that featured some of the of the best tries of the season, scored around the country in one of the most fascinating tournaments in rugby.

The video included some of the greatest moments of the 2008/2009 season, that was of course won by Perpignan against Clermont in the final.

Today we've got a follow up to that video, which features some of the biggest hits of the tournament. A few were featured here on RD, but the majority of which you probably wouldn't have seen before, which makes it a really enjoyable video to watch.

While many of the hits are probably on the wrong side of legality, there's a fair mix of textbook tackles that are also great to see.

Amongst other great tackles, we see Tana Umaga with a couple of crunchers from his comeback season, Freddie Michalak puts in a dangerous spear, and Dan Carter gets smashed by Juan Martin Hernandez.

    pss 1st coment whoooo

  • GREAT VID! (although I'd rather have seen it put together without the illegal stuff - spears in particular)

Love Hernandez on Carter - must have been deeply deeply satisfying for the Argie. Leota was always a favourite when at Wasps, great to see he's still at it.

Thought I saw Magnus Lund involved in one - any Frenchmen mind letting me know how he's going at Biarritz?

By Anonymous Hackney Griffin, at June 17, 2009 6:01 pm

  • I have to say, I'm not a fan. Most of those were spears or shoulder charges. If people are going to congratulate players for illegal stuff by making a video out of it, then they're not going to stop doing it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2009 6:26 pm

  • good video but the first two hits shown were, if not illegal, then certainly unnecessary

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2009 6:28 pm

  • hey guys the video is called "biggest hits", content is pretty faithful to the name actually. Although I don't condone such tackles, it's still pretty impressive.
Love that tackle on Nalaga and the way Bastareaud lays down the player he just spear tackled, that was slow, slow motion

By Anonymous piaruskov, at June 17, 2009 6:36 pm

  • Notice the two former rugby league players not wrapping during the tackle (gas and sonny bill williams)

  • Quite a few illegal tackles in there.

  • Mettre du Kyo sur un clip de rugby me semble... Comment dirais-je... Déplacé...

To use a kyo song (a french band similar to the Jonas Brothers) for a rugby clip seems to me... deplorable. Fuck, this is schoolgirl music !

Otherwise, lots of illegal shoulder charges in it. What a shame, it could have been excellent.

    By Anonymous mpc33, at June 17, 2009 8:24 pm

  • This video clearly just says 'biggest hits' not 'biggest legal hits' so I wasn't really that surprised by the illegal hits.

One thing I have to ask is why were almost all the hits slowed down to the point where some of them were just boring?

Hits shown in real time are much better because it shows the power and ferocity of the hit better than if in slow motion.

    But otherwise cheers RD.

  • "leguizamon 3 great tackles!!! the best nro8 in top 14 by far"

Is the name "Sergio Parisse" familiar to you?
Plus, isn't Leguizamon a flanker btw?

By Anonymous GUETTEBA, at June 17, 2009 9:25 pm

  • some really nasty ones in there, compare to the 'hit' that Andy Powell was penalised for a few vids back, these were much worse, i wonder how many were penalised

i particularly like the late hit where the player immediately looks to the ref like a puppy
    "wasn't late ref, honest"

By Anonymous mat, at June 17, 2009 9:51 pm

  • Great as always, Guett

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2009 9:57 pm

  • There are definitely some crackers in that compilation, but I'd say atleast 1/3 of them are spear tackles.

Lets hope the French can pull off another historic win in NZ!

  • Another belter from the Baguette man, legal or not. Merci beaucoup monsieur.

By Anonymous Ted, at June 17, 2009 10:33 pm

  • Rugby tackles are becoming more and more dangerous, both to the tackler and tacklee(?). The players are becoming more powerful and this is being used as an excuse to dish out illegal hits. Some rules changes or rule applications have to be made

    1) Any tackle where the player does not wrap and go to ground with his opponent must be illegal
-too many players are feigning they attempted to wrap and actually shoulder charging, albeit with open arms.
-if the tackler cannot wrap, they are obviously not in control. These high speed collisions make for great television, but also produce terrible injuries

    2) Dissapointed to see several tackles where the tackler used his own head as a battering ram. I have retired from rugby because I was too stupid and did this myself. Young players will watch videos like this and want to emulate their heroes

    3) Dissapointed to see rugby dump celebrate the spear tackle. There is no debating that if you post it, if you are not accompanying it with a condemnation, you are at the least condoning this.

I love a big hit and a great tackle. I love to see players walking off the field under their own power even more.

By Anonymous Canadian Content, at June 17, 2009 10:46 pm

  • To Canadian Content said...

as much as i hate people bitching about hard tackles your right.

some tackles in these were dangerous E.G the few spear tackles that were in it

but some were completly stuiped (as in the shoulder charges!

but either from that great few tackles in there!!

btw rugbydump any chance of another RBTS??????loved them

  • sorry that was meant to be Try Saver Rib Breaker^^^^^^^^^

    By Anonymous creggs08, at June 17, 2009 11:00 pm

  • awesome, but show them in real time-its way better

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2009 11:12 pm

  • Hard tackles are great, but only if they are legal because that requires SKILL - timing, courage, and accuracy. If you just want to watch big guys smash into each other and throw each other around watch American football or wrestling - you will see more of it there.

By Anonymous Gavin, at June 17, 2009 11:15 pm

  • Canadian Content - they're the biggest hits of the tournament. Case closed.

I dont for one minute think that RD are condoning spear tackles by showing this compilation video that was made by someone else. I dont think its necessary to go out their way to condemn it either. Your coach, referee, or father can do that job.

Lighten up. Everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. or... should.

By Anonymous Scotsdale, at June 18, 2009 12:24 am

  • Great video !
Not many Toulousains love Bastareaud but have to admit the way he pushes up this guy from Bayonne was just IMPRESSIVE, looks like he's carrying anything but a man around 100 kgs...

Leguizamon ones look really good too, especially the one on Nalaga (Leguizamon has understood that the only way to stop him was to cut his legs :)) but he's far of being the best n°8 in Top 14...
    1) he doesn't play so often as 8 in Paris, mostly as flanker
    2) Parisse, Sowerby, Chouly, Picamoles, Harinordoquy, Vermeulen, maybe Van Niekerk too are all great 8

By Anonymous ToulouseFan, at June 18, 2009 12:45 am

  • I am sorry but most of those tackles were tame. I have seen bigger hits from under 16s, so to have weak tackles in a video names 'Biggest Hits of the Season' is just crap.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 12:48 am

  • Great vid and to above are you for real you obviously have cataracts in both eyes if you think those hits are weak.

By Anonymous Ronan, at June 18, 2009 12:54 am

  • Biggest hits of the season but most were illegal. Would a soccer website put up best goals of the season video if most of the goals on it were offside? Nah, there'd be no point.
Obviously the physicality and aggression on show is one of rugbys most enjoyable spectacles but if I want to watch shoulder charges I'll watch wrestling.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 1:12 am

  • To the above: you can't compare a rugby big hits video to a soccer goals scored video. You could compare a rugby big hits video to a soccer nasty tackles video, in which some would probably also be illegal.

By Anonymous USA Scrum-half, at June 18, 2009 2:37 am

  • Gosh, Linkin Park sounds even more whiny and annoying in French.

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at June 18, 2009 3:59 am

  • To USA Scrumhalf;
Mate thanks for clearing that up, I never can tell the difference between rugby and soccer. You're a gem.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 4:50 am

  • Nice video, some huge hits there, lots of badly controlled hits, gotta agree that the hit on carter must have been one fo those moments when a very smug Hernandez got up thinking "how'd you like THEM apples?"

BTW I think some of the footage is from the Heineken cup though.

Next season top 14 is going to be awesome, Two Parisisan teams in the Top division, means double my chances to see Top14 & European Rugby.

    YES!!!

  • fuckin trevor leota!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 8:21 am

the hit on nalaga is awesome though

    Hitttttt Parade!!

  • the one by legizumean(cant spell it) on the clermont winger was class!

    By Anonymous welshno7, at June 18, 2009 11:00 am

  • i know it doesn't state that they're legal hits, but i think videos like this send out the wrong message to people who aren't familiar with the sport. rugby's all about controlled aggression and a good, legal tackle demonstrates a better technique than any huge illegal tackle.
loved seeing big trevor leota again though, might go youtubing now to see some more of him.

  • On my opinion, there's a big difference between:
    a. A big hit tackle, straight into the rib cage.
    b. I stop you- (you make the pass)- I lift your leg like a morron- I try to hurt you by crashing your head or shoulder on the ground.

So Froggy or Argentinian way to tackle. I hate to see that!

By Anonymous SwissVinch, at June 18, 2009 12:28 pm

  • do players get away with these spear tackles all the time or something? surely some of those were at least cited?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 12:59 pm

  • Meh! A couple of big hits. Nothing more.

This video is proof that the wrapping rule is a joke. How can that really be considered a big hit compilation? The majority looked weaked!

All the truelly big hits I saw in the video were either spear tackles or shoulder charges.

Union needs to get rid of the wrapping rule ASAP.

By Anonymous Chris, at June 18, 2009 1:32 pm

  • "Some rules changes or rule applications have to be made

False. I urge you to stop spreading lies and propoganda and shut up, or put forward some evidence.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that not wrapping is dangerous. That is a myth spread and created by girls who cannot handle pain.

Rugby League has no injury epedemic or even a real injury problem, and there's tons of massive shoulder hits EVERY game.

Please stop anchoring down the natural progression of Union for the sake of being a purist. The wrap rule makes no sense. A 5 year old child will tell you this.

NO terrible injuries come from shoulder hits.

  • Leguizamon is a great player but has yet to learn how to pass when carrying the ball (un piti coffre a ballon encore...)
A lot of those tackles saw some yellow and red cards as France is quite strict when it comes to spear tackles...
Pour Kyo c'est tres bizarre meme si la bizarrement ca passe... mais merci a Guetteba car la rea est sympa ^^ (un chtit noir desir choquera toujours moins... par exemple)

  • guetteba, ur a rugbydump legend
    great video

By Anonymous luxi, at June 18, 2009 5:33 pm

  • The rules of rugby union arent going to suddenly change because some people think that it should be more like league. Whether there's injuries in league or not, it's just the way rugby is so, accept and get over it.. or watch league only. But coming with arguments about laws like that.. it's like saying that they should be allowed to kick (the ball) in Basketball because it would make the sport more exciting. daft.

By Anonymous UnionMan, at June 18, 2009 8:58 pm

  • At least 4 of those spear tackles should have resulted in red cards. I saw a whole host of yellows in there too.

Other than that, this is a great bunch of rugby!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2009 10:27 pm

  • YES! 56th!

RD didn't make this video (I'm pretty sure) it's just hosting it.

SO, I don't think it can be blamed for the varied content, as regards legal and illegal tackling - and perhaps more importantly, dangerous takling.

Yes, there are plenty of dodgy ones in there - one every now and again looks ok, but seeing so many in slo mo does get a bit nauseating.

RBTS are better - as is build up a bit of build up

By Anonymous mise, at June 19, 2009 2:34 am

  • Yeah, let's get rid of mauls, wrapping in tackles etc.
Why don't we reduce the number of players by two in order to "open up play"? Isn't that the goal of the ELVs? x_x

Also the comment on these being comparable to u16, c'mon, a man-child beating up on less developed players might seem impressive, but these are pro athletes taking each other on.
